There is a whole literature on "social exchange theory," in which the everyday swapping of sometimes intangible resources - information, social support - is gauged with care.19 But because so many social scientists have resisted the very idea of an inherent human nature, reciprocation has often been seen as a cultural "norm" that just happens to be universal (presumably because distinct peoples independently discovered its utility). Few have noted that the daily life of every human society rests not just on reciprocity, but on a common foundation of feelings - sympathy, gratitude, affection, obligation, guilt, dislike, and so on.
