When social critics deplore the materialism of our time and its preoccupation with money, fame, and superficial values, they overlook that the driving force behind the changes we have seen
one of the greatest periods of change in history
has been thought. It wasn't big bucks or social status that drove this change. It was, and is, the force of the play of the mind. As materialistic as we may be, playful thinking got us here. ~ Edward M. Hallowell
Playful Thinking quotes by Edward M. Hallowell
This, in the end, is the prime purpose of a philosophy: to give us lucid ways to think about the world and how to live in it. ~ Daniel Klein
Playful Thinking quotes by Daniel Klein
I think I gravitate towards people who express themselves in a simple and funny way. ~ John Slattery
Playful Thinking quotes by John Slattery
I think people have always misinterpreted my self-destructive nature as nihilistic, because if you don't care about the world, you can't create art. I am misanthropic and self-loathing, but never nihilistic. And I think I act far worse off-stage than onstage. ~ Marilyn Manson
Playful Thinking quotes by Marilyn Manson
I shuddered at the thought and from that point on did my best to stop thinking. ~ Mike Gayle
Playful Thinking quotes by Mike Gayle
It's cute how I used to think this 'barely holding it together' feeling was temporary. ~ Anna Kendrick
Playful Thinking quotes by Anna Kendrick
This is Rick Grimes being pushed to his absolute limit. And if you think you've seen that before, you haven't. And the Rick Grimes that comes out of this is really going to shock people. ~ Robert Kirkman
Playful Thinking quotes by Robert Kirkman
He [Bogie] had tremendous character and a great sense of honor and would not tolerate lies, even if they asked him what he thought of a movie. We were once at a screening at somebody's house, I forget whose, and they ran a movie that he was in, that he never thought much of. Afterward, the producer asked what he thought of it, and Bogie said "I think it's a crock." And this producer was horrified! He was about to release the movie, and he said to Bogie "Why would you say that?!" Bogie shrugged and said "Then don't ask me." He never played the schmoozing game. He was not into that at all. ~ Lauren Bacall
Playful Thinking quotes by Lauren Bacall
Pink Balloons

My name is Olivia King

I am five years old

My mother bought me a balloon. I remember the day she walked through the front door with it. The curly hot pink ribbon trickling down her arm, wrapped around her wrist. She was smiling at me as she untied the ribbon and wrapped it around my hand.

"Here Livie, I bought this for you."

She called me Livie.

I was so happy. I'd never had a balloon before. I mean, I always saw balloon wrapped around other kids wrist in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, but I never dreamed I would have my very own.

My very own pink balloon.

I was excited! So ecstatic! So thrilled! I couldn't believe my mother bought me something! She'd never bought me anything before! I played with it for hours. It was full of heliu and it danced and swayed and floated as I drug it around from room to room with me, thinking of places to take it. Thinking of places the balloon had never been before. I took it in the bathroom, the closet, the laundry room, the kitchen, the living room. I wanted my new best friend to see everything I saw! I took it to my mother's bedroom!

My mothers

Bedroom?

Where I wasn't supposed to be?

With my pink

balloon...

I covered my ears as she screamed at me, wiping the evidence off her nose! She slapped me across the face as she told me how bad I was! How much I misbehaved! How I never ~ Colleen Hoover
Playful Thinking quotes by Colleen Hoover
I don't really think of time off as writing blocks. I think that's a western notion of demonizing inactivity. When your imagination decides it needs to take a nap. maybe that's what it needs to do. ~ Elliott Smith
Playful Thinking quotes by Elliott Smith
The other day I read that last year 58 million tourists came to New York ... where a puny eight million people are trying to live. Unless they own a hotel chain, I don't think a single one of these eight million people are happy about this. ~ Fran Lebowitz
Playful Thinking quotes by Fran Lebowitz
Our thoughts about the future go far toward creating it; our minds and hears are like filaments taht connect today to tomorrow, they are conduits for either the status quo or the emergence of different, hopefully more loving, possibilities. How we think and how we behave determine where we are going ~ Marianne Williamson
Playful Thinking quotes by Marianne Williamson
When you leave your home, think that you have numerous opponents waiting for you (it is your behavior that invites trouble from them). ~ Gichin Funakoshi
Playful Thinking quotes by Gichin Funakoshi
Before the sparrow arrived, you had almost stopped thinking about flight. Then, last winter, it soared through the sky and landed in front of you, or more precisely on the windowsill of the covered balcony adjoining your bedroom. You knew the grimy window panes were caked with dead ants and dust, and smelt as sour as the curtains. But the sparrow wasn't put off. It jumped inside the covered balcony and ruffled its feathers, releasing a sweet smell of tree bark into the air. Then it flew into your bedroom, landed on your chest and stayed there like a cold egg. ~ Ma Jian
Playful Thinking quotes by Ma Jian
It was more work than it seemed, looking through a telescope, as the Earth was continually moving and you had to move along with it. You don't realize how fast this acutally happens, and it's kind of both creepy and wonderful when you stop to think about it. And it makes you realize there's absolutely no way to avoid change. You can sit there and cross your arms and refuse it, but underneath you, things are still spinning away. ~ Deb Caletti
Playful Thinking quotes by Deb Caletti
Many think that assigning blame settles matters. ~ Mason Cooley
Playful Thinking quotes by Mason Cooley
But fundamentally, I don't think of it as an alien-invasion movie; everybody's here, kind of, right? So, I think it's probably more of an action-adventure picture, if I actually had to qualify it. ~ Lorenzo Di Bonaventura
Playful Thinking quotes by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura
On a personal level, Freaking Out is a process whereby an individual casts off outmoded and restricting standards of thinking, dress, and social etiquette in order to express creatively his relationship to his immediate environment and the social structure as a whole. ~ Frank Zappa
Playful Thinking quotes by Frank Zappa
I think the impacts of 9/11 on academic freedom vary greatly depending on locale and time (softening with the passage of time), and even within the same community, and likely within the same schools. This variability makes it difficult to offer generalized responses without accompanying caveats. ~ Richard A. Falk
Playful Thinking quotes by Richard A. Falk
When I look up at the screen and see myself I always have to laugh. Not because I think I'm doing a horrible job, quite the contrary, I just feel it's so surreal to feel like one person can entertain so many at one time. ~ Ben Affleck
Playful Thinking quotes by Ben Affleck
I think we have all experienced passion that is not in any sense reasonable. ~ Stephen Fry
Playful Thinking quotes by Stephen Fry
We are expected to put the utmost energy, of every power that we have, into the service of our fellow men, never sparing ourselves, not condescending to think of what is going to happen to ourselves, but ready, if need be, to go to the utter length of self-sacrifice. ~ Woodrow Wilson
Playful Thinking quotes by Woodrow Wilson
Instantly I regretted my decision. It was one of those times when you hear yourself saying something, and it seems like a good idea at the time, but once you blurt it out you can hardly believe it's you speaking. What was I thinking? ~ Tara Shuler
Playful Thinking quotes by Tara Shuler
I'm not a feminist, but I just think it's a really cool process working with a woman as a director. ~ Melanie Griffith
Playful Thinking quotes by Melanie Griffith
I think that making love is the best form of exercise. ~ Cary Grant
Playful Thinking quotes by Cary Grant
We can all endure disaster and tragedy, and triumph over them-if we have to. We may not think we can, but we have surprisingly strong inner resources that will see us through if we will only make use of them. We are stronger than we think. ~ Dale Carnegie
Playful Thinking quotes by Dale Carnegie
I'm not afraid of turning 80 and I have lots of things to do. I don't have time for dying. ~ Ingvar Kamprad
Playful Thinking quotes by Ingvar Kamprad
Some of the best inventive moments are born out of 'wrong thinking'. Most people start with the right way so they all follow the same path. The wrong way will lead to mistakes from which you can learn and create new discoveries-the kind of original ideas that come to life when we dare to be different, keep an open mind, and have no fear of failure. ~ James Dyson
Playful Thinking quotes by James Dyson
As important as the civil rights movement was, I think what will rise to the top is that we left Earth in that time. ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Playful Thinking quotes by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
It's very difficult to know when you're crossing the boundary. I hate the word boundary because I never think about it when taking a picture. Very often it doesn't mean anything because it depends on who's looking at the picture more than the content of the picture itself. ~ Carine Roitfeld
Playful Thinking quotes by Carine Roitfeld
Because music wasn't free yet, they wouldn't really offer MP3s so you had to buy things to see if you liked it or not. Which is crazy if you think about how much music you bought and then didn't even like the stuff. It was a different world where bands made money off their music. ~ Marnie Stern
Playful Thinking quotes by Marnie Stern
Now the reason that we think computer science is about computers is pretty much the same reason that the Egyptians thought geometry was about surveying instruments: when some field is just getting started and you don't really understand it very well, it's very easy to confuse the essence of what you're doing with the tools that you use. ~ Hal Abelson
Playful Thinking quotes by Hal Abelson
I think it's the ego in us that screws us up. ~ Alicia Keys
Playful Thinking quotes by Alicia Keys
I work continuously within the shadow of failure. For every novel that makes it to my publisher's desk, there are at least five or six that died on the way. And even with the ones I do finish, I think of all the ways they might have been better. ~ Gail Godwin
Playful Thinking quotes by Gail Godwin
I really believe that you can. Not only do I think it is a part of public service to help young people find their way, just as professors had helped me find mine, but I've been very involved in K-12 education issues. I started a program back in 1992 called the Center for a New Generation, an afterschool enrichment program. ~ Condoleezza Rice
Playful Thinking quotes by Condoleezza Rice
My weakness ... is architecture. I think of my work as ephemeral architecture, dedicated to the beauty of the female body. ~ Christian Dior
Playful Thinking quotes by Christian Dior
I think it's just that as a creative person, in all the different things that I've done or ways that I've found to express myself, I've consistently come up against resistance in certain areas. I think that the world is not comfortable with female sexuality. It's always coming from a male point of view, and a woman is being objectified by a man - and even women are comfortable with that. But when a woman does it, ironically, women are uncomfortable with it. I think a lot of that has to do with conditioning. ~ Madonna Ciccone
Playful Thinking quotes by Madonna Ciccone
On the other hand, identification as a relationship of audience to performance disguised the arbitrarily constructed nature of the performance and encouraged the audience to experience the representation as though it were the real, and, in particular, to see characters as individually real people. This blurring of the distinction between the representation and the real disguised the fact that people and incidents were on stage to perform ideologically determined actions and made them appear as innocent, objective relections of reality. It made them appear prodcuts of nature, not of culture.
Identification encouraged the audience to share the experiences and emotions of the characters and thus produced a feeling audience, not a thinking one, an accepting not an interrogative one, and one that understood incidents and actions through individual experience rather than through a sociopolitical framework. ~ John Fiske
Playful Thinking quotes by John Fiske
Trouble is only opportunity in work clothes. ~ Henry J. Kaiser
Playful Thinking quotes by Henry J. Kaiser
Sometimes I think, I need to think before I speak. And then other times I think, I shouldn't leave the house or interact with people ever. ~ Anna Kendrick
Playful Thinking quotes by Anna Kendrick
I would advise puppeteering for any artist. It's a way to break down pretensions. It's a sculpture that can talk. It's a painting that can talk. And it's pure play. I think every artist needs to stay in touch with the idea of playing. The artist should always be playing, always. All art is performance. ~ Wayne White
Playful Thinking quotes by Wayne White
What we're calling 'presencing' is possible because of this womb, where the absolute and the manifest interact. I think a buddhist would say that presencing can arise to the extent that we develop the capacity, individually and collectively, to extend our conscious awareness in both domains. ~ Betty Sue Flowers
Playful Thinking quotes by Betty Sue Flowers
Since civilizing children takes the better part of two decades
some twenty years of nonstop thinking, nurturing, teaching, coaxing, rewarding, forgiving, warning, punishing, sympathizing, apologizing, reminding, and repeating, not to mention deciding what to do when
I now understand that one wrong move is invariably followed by hundreds of opportunities to be wrong again. ~ Mary Blakely
