People seem to think that life began with the achievement of personal independence. ~ Katharine Anthony
Personal Independence quotes by Katharine Anthony
A young woman faces the decision of whether to marry a certain man whom she loves but who has deeply rooted, traditional ideas concerning marriage, family life, and the roles of men and women in each. A sober assessment of her future tell the woman that each of the two alternatives offers real but contrasting goods. One life offers the possibility of a greater degree of personal independence, the chance to pursue a career, perhaps more risk and adventure, while the other offers the rewards of parenting, stability, and a life together with a man whom, after all, she is in love with. In order to choose in a self-determined mode the woman must realize that the decision she faces involves more than the choice between two particular actions; it is also a choice between two distinct identities. In posing the questions "Who am I? Which of the two lives is really me?" she asks herself not a factual question about her identity but a fundamental practical question about the relative values of distinct and incommensurable goods. The point I take to be implicit in Tugendhat's (and Fichte's) view of the practical subject is that it would be mistaken to suppose that the woman had at her disposal an already established hierarchy of values that she must simply consult in order to decide whether to marry. Rather, her decision, if self-determined, must proceed from a ranking of values that emerges only in the process of reflecting upon the kind of person she wants to be. ~ Frederick Neuhouser
Personal Independence quotes by Frederick Neuhouser
Democracy extends the sphere of personal independence; socialism confines it. Democracy values each man at his highest; socialism makes of each man an agent, an instrument, a number. Democracy and socialism have but one thing in common - equality. But note well the difference. Democracy aims at equality in liberty. Socialism desires equality in constraint and in servitude. ~ Alexis De Tocqueville
Personal Independence quotes by Alexis De Tocqueville
Truth, naked, unblushing truth, the first virtue of all serious history, must be the sole recommendation of this personal narrative. ~ Edward Gibbon
Personal Independence quotes by Edward Gibbon
The independence of libraries matters because it means that our attention cannot be bought and sold in a library. ~ John Palfrey
Personal Independence quotes by John Palfrey
I am politically pro-choice, but personally pro-life. I have my faith but refuse to force it on the world at large - especially this world, so brutal and unjust. I cannot make these wrenching personal life and death decisions for others - nor do I believe they should be made by a church run by childless men. ~ Julianna Baggott
Personal Independence quotes by Julianna Baggott
Anyway, these ideas or feelings or ramblings had their satisfactions. They turned the pain of others into memories of one's own. They turned pain, which is natural, enduring, and eternally triumphant, into personal memory, which is human, brief, and eternally elusive. They turned a brutal story of injustice and abuse, an incoherent howl with no beginning or end, into a neatly structured story in which suicide was always held out as a possibility. They turned flight into freedom, even if freedom meant no more than the perpetuation of flight. They turned chaos into order, even if it was at the cost of what is commonly known as sanity. ~ Roberto Bolano
Personal Independence quotes by Roberto Bolano
So you become numb to insults, particularly if you teach yourself to imagine that the person uttering them is a variant of a noisy ape with little personal control. Just keep your composure, smile, focus on analyzing the speaker not the message, and you'll win the argument. An ad hominem attack against an intellectual, not against an idea, is highly flattering. It indicates that the person does not have anything intelligent to say about your message. The psychologist ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Personal Independence quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
One's own free unfettered choice, one's own caprice, however wild it may be, one's own fancy worked up at times to frenzy
is that very "most advantageous advantage" which we have overlooked, which comes under no classification and against which all systems and theories are continually being shattered to atoms. And how do these wiseacres know that man wants a normal, a virtuous choice? What has made them conceive that man must want a rationally advantageous choice? What man wants is simply independent choice, whatever that independence may cost and wherever it may lead. And choice, of course, the devil only knows what choice. ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Personal Independence quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Brain surgeons are dealing with the very last thread of life, and they have to be very confident, but I think they tend to remember their failures rather than their successes, and that must be very hard. Who do you share that failure with? That's why their personal lives are often disastrous. ~ James Nesbitt
Personal Independence quotes by James Nesbitt
Life isn't as serious as the mind makes it out to be. ~ Eckhart Tolle
Personal Independence quotes by Eckhart Tolle
The actor becomes an emotional athlete. The process is painful - my personal life suffers. ~ Al Pacino
Personal Independence quotes by Al Pacino
We have killed more people celebrating our independence day than we lost fighting for it. ~ Will Rogers
Personal Independence quotes by Will Rogers
The one weapon every man, soldier, sailor, or airman should be able to use effectively is the rifle. It is always his weapon of personal safety in an emergency, and for many it is the primary weapon of offence and defense. Expertness in its use cannot be over emphasized. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
Personal Independence quotes by Dwight D. Eisenhower
She didn't need anyone. At Wheeler, even when she stood out with her pink hair and quilter army-surplus jacket and combat bots, she did this without apology. It was a great irony that the very fact of a relationship with her would diminish her appeal, that the moment she came to love me back and depend on me as much as I depended on her, she would no longer be a truly independent spirit. No way in hell was I going to be the one to take that quality away from her. ~ Jodi Picoult
Personal Independence quotes by Jodi Picoult
Among the Mormons, things temporal have always been important along with things eternal, for salvation in this world and the next is seen as one and the same continuing process of endless growth. Building Zion, a literal Kingdom of God on earth, has therefore meant an identity of religious and economic values: in the daily affairs of the Kingdom, Latter-day Saint scriptures call for unity, welfare, and economic independence. ~ Leonard J. Arrington
Personal Independence quotes by Leonard J. Arrington
A true brave man is the one who dares to work against personal interest. ~ Khem Veasna
Personal Independence quotes by Khem Veasna
Uncertainty is an ally of change. It opens doors to new possibilities. It invites new insights. ~ Jeanne McElvaney
Personal Independence quotes by Jeanne McElvaney
The personal lives of painters are tragic and inevitable and do not explain the artist. For the artist is his work and no longer human. ~ Sam Francis
Personal Independence quotes by Sam Francis
As we change, our writing changes too. You cannot write the same poem twice. And that's a good thing. ~ Katerina Stoykova Klemer
Personal Independence quotes by Katerina Stoykova Klemer
Professionally, it would be a logical choice, but my personal view is that he is the most insincere man I know in football ~ Tony Cascarino
Personal Independence quotes by Tony Cascarino
All children, including TCKs, face a myriad of developmental tasks as they grow from helpless infants into healthy adults. Among them is the need to develop a strong sense of personal identity as well as group identity, answering the questions Who am I? and Where do I belong? Traditionally, the family and community mirror back the answers and the child sees his or her image reflected in them. ~ David C. Pollock
Personal Independence quotes by David C. Pollock
I give up a personal life ... to pursue what I love and make my fans happy. ~ Justin Bieber
Personal Independence quotes by Justin Bieber
When we are securely rooted in personal intimacy with the source of life, it will be possible to remain flexible without being relativistic, convinced without being rigid, willing to confront without being offensive, gentle and forgiving without being soft, and true witnesses without being manipulative. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Personal Independence quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
It's too late," she whispered.
He whirled her around. "Don't say that! We are no better than animals if we cannot learn from our mistakes and move forward."
She lifted her chin. "It isn't that. I don't want to marry you anymore." And she didn't, she realized ...
He paled and whispered, "You're just saying that."
"I mean what I say, Robert. I don't want to marry you."
"You're angry," he reasoned. "You're angry, and you want to hurt me, and you have every right to feel that way."
"I'm not angry." She paused. "Well, yes, I am, but that's not why I'm refusing you."
He crossed his arms. "Why, then? Why won't you even listen to me?"
"Because I'm happy now! Is that so difficult for you to understand? I like my position and I love my independence. ~ Julia Quinn
Personal Independence quotes by Julia Quinn
Health care's complicated, can be misrepresented, it's personal, it can spark fear, it's expensive, and the people who have got the money want to keep it. ~ William J. Clinton
Personal Independence quotes by William J. Clinton
Shedding an independent, individualistic sense of self, is an apt place to start when remaking oneself. The task of divesting my egoistic coat-of-arms requires that I first understand how I came into being, ascertain how a person forges a baseline personality, and discover how I can modify my template for self-construal. I need to surrender an arrogant sense of self-importance, acknowledge towering ignorance, and learn how to live humbly. I hope to parlay personal humiliation and self-hatred into a transformative act by invoking a spiritual death of my egotistical being that results in a resurrection of a more astute and kinder human being. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Personal Independence quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
You will have sacrificed the lives of the people for personal honor, an empty word," Luan said. "That seems to me a most selfish act. ~ Ken Liu
Personal Independence quotes by Ken Liu
It is important to democratize personal genetics and make it more accessible. ~ Anne Wojcicki
Personal Independence quotes by Anne Wojcicki
Science is a very human form of knowledge. We are always at the brink of the known; we always feel forward for what is to be hoped. Every judgment in science stands on the edge of error and is personal. Science is a tribute to what we can know although we are fallible. ~ Jacob Bronowski
Personal Independence quotes by Jacob Bronowski
Some people in LA are addicted. They have to be here. My personal life is stronger than my professional life, in terms of priorities. ~ Debi Mazar
Personal Independence quotes by Debi Mazar
Writing journal is for those people who find no interest in living a life of victimhood and limited personal freedom. ~ Deepak Burfiwala
Personal Independence quotes by Deepak Burfiwala
My personal definition of rock'n'roll is people attempting to do something that's beyond their ability to do it well. And whatever the outward contradictions, I do call us a rock'n'roll band. ~ David First
Personal Independence quotes by David First
There are men whose sense of humour is so ill developed that they still bear a grudge against Copernicus because he dethroned them from the central position in the universe. They feel it a personal affront that they can no longer consider themselves the pivot upon which turns the whole of created things. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
Personal Independence quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
A highly cultivated taste, a taste that is knowledgeable and eclectic, is likely to be exciting and provocative, a personal taste at its highest level. ~ Eleanor Brown
Personal Independence quotes by Eleanor Brown
Move towards your dreams inch by inch or suffer the pain of regret. ~ Matthew Donnelly
Personal Independence quotes by Matthew Donnelly
Personal disillusionment accompanied by self-pity and self-loathing are the Achilles' heel of modern humankind, representing the weakness of the human spirit. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Personal Independence quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
It's easy to run to others. It's so hard to stand on one's own record. You can fake virtue for an audience. You can't fake it in your own eyes. Your ego is your strictest judge. They run from it. They spend their lives running. It's easier to donate a few thousand to charity and think oneself noble than to base self-respect on personal standards of personal achievement. It's simple to seek substitutes for competence
such easy substitutes: love, charm, kindness, charity. But there is no substitute for competence. ~ Ayn Rand
Personal Independence quotes by Ayn Rand
Not only in personal relationships, but also in professional life, if like minded people work together, it is a beauty to witness ~ Rajasaraswathii
Personal Independence quotes by Rajasaraswathii
I come from a place where everyone has great power, by your standards, and they steadfastly refuse to use it for self-aggrandizement ... anywhere ... ever. ~ J.Z. Colby
Personal Independence quotes by J.Z. Colby
Don't compare the insides of your marriage to the outsides of other people's marriages. Pictures don't tell the truth. Smiling faces on Christmas cards don't reveal the pain behind the scenes. While your struggles are very personal and often very painful, but they are not unique. ~ Jill Savage
Personal Independence quotes by Jill Savage
We founded this nation under the illusory notion of independence, that a man's life is entirely distinct from the life of his neighbor; that the poisons in his water have no bearing on the cleanliness of his neighbor's water; that the suffering of a laborer has no direct relationship to the purchaser of goods; that animals are objects for sale; that the health of the land is divorced from the health of the collective. We've turned freedom from tyranny into freedom from each other. ~ C.E. Morgan
Personal Independence quotes by C.E. Morgan
What I would love to see is art that explicitly addresses not personal intimacies but anonymous intimacies: the vast collections of facts about you and me that now exist in giant server banks. ~ Russell Smith
Personal Independence quotes by Russell Smith
I know all the Latin-American rhythms quite well, but I don't play them exactly like they do in their own country - I add my personal touch. ~ Dizzy Gillespie
Personal Independence quotes by Dizzy Gillespie
Be the best of being. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Personal Independence quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Back in the day, coming out was something very personal. You began by acknowledging the truth, first to yourself, then to close family and friends. Those of us more in the public spotlight, though, also had to 'come out' to the press. ~ George Takei
Personal Independence quotes by George Takei
Politics is not about justice. It's about the settling of personal vendettas under a thin veneer of civilization. All politics is personal. ~ Cinda Williams Chima
Personal Independence quotes by Cinda Williams Chima
If there is one thing I fear less than everything else, it is, I believe, persecution for my opinions. There are a good many points about which I may be diffident, but when it comes to questions of Truth and intellectual independence, there is no holding me - I can envisage no finer end than to sacrifice oneself for a conviction. ~ Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
Personal Independence quotes by Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
Nearly the physical size of Los Angeles, Bukchang housed fifty thousand prisoners who were kept in by, among many other things, a four-meter-high fence. If you were sent here, so was your entire family-the classic definition of guilt by association, which extended to infants, toddlers, teenagers, siblings, spouses, and grandparents. Babies born here shared the same guilt as their families. Unauthorized babies born here, because intercourse and pregnancies were strictly regulated, were killed. Age and personal culpability meant nothing, and a toddler and an ancient grand- mother were treated the same-brutally. ~ David Baldacci
Personal Independence quotes by David Baldacci
My vision of the future is no longer of people taking exams and proceeding from secondary school to University but of passing from one stage of independence to a higher, by means of their own activity and effort of will. ~ Maria Montessori
