Our eyes see the future we desire
And if yearning is enough, turn blind entire
To any threats that challenge our hope.
Oh, how small indeed is Reality's scope. ~ Karl Kristian Flores
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Karl Kristian Flores
People tend to accept information that confirms their existing beliefs and feelings, and reject information that contradicts them. This is called "motivated reasoning," and it means that providing people with corrective information often does not work and may even strengthen their original beliefs. This also means that when people receive new information, their existing beliefs and feelings may have more influence over whether they believe or reject this information than rational reasoning. ~ Rachel Hilary Brown
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Rachel Hilary Brown
Like any pseudo scientific thinking, denialism begins with a desired conclusion. Rather than supporting a controversial or rejected claim, like many pseudo sciences, denialists maintain that a generally accepted scientific or historical claim is not true, usually for ideological reasons. Denialists then engage in what is called motivated reasoning, rationalizing why the undesired claim is not true or at least not proven. They therefore are working backwards from their desired conclusion, filling in justifications for what they believe, rather than following logic and evidence wherever it leads. ~ Steven Novella
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Steven Novella
Code of Civil Procedure §1161(2) prevents the landlord from claiming rent due more than a year before the service of the 3-day notice. See Fifth & Broadway Partnership v Kimny, Inc. (1980) 102 CA3d 195, 202. An argument could also be made on the ground of laches that it is inequitable for a landlord to wait a full year before demanding overdue rent. That argument was successfully made in Maxwell v Simons (Civ Ct 1973) 353 NYS2d 589, which held that it was unconscionable for a landlord to permit the tenant to fall more than 3 months behind in rent before bringing an unlawful detainer action based on the total arrearage. New York law required the tenant to pay the arrearage within 5 days or return possession. The court held that the landlord could base his eviction action only on the last 3 months' nonpayment of rent and would have to recover the balance in an ordinary action for rent. See also Marriott v Shaw (Civ Ct 1991) 574 NYS2d 477 and Dedvukaj v Mandonado (Civ Ct 1982) 453 NYS2d 965. In California, this reasoning, along with the cases cited above on "equitable" defenses, might be used to attack a 3-day notice to pay or quit demanding more than three months' back rent. ~ Myron Moskovitz
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Myron Moskovitz
One important idea is that science is a means whereby learning is achieved, not by mere theoretical speculation on the one hand, nor by the undirected accumulation of practical facts on the other, but rather by a motivated iteration between theory and practice. ~ George E.P. Box
Motivated Reasoning quotes by George E.P. Box
I always feel that crime films are about capitalism because it is a genre where it is perfectly acceptable for all the characters to be motivated by the desire for money. In some ways, the crime film is the most honest American film because it portrays Americans as I experience a lot of them, in Hollywood, as being very concerned with money. ~ Andrew Dominik
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Andrew Dominik
She'd seen them on the news, compassionate Americans talking about how the United States should be more welcoming to people who came in peace. She believed these kindhearted people, like Natasha, would never betray them, and she wanted to tell Jende this, that the people of Judson Memorial Church loved immigrants, that their secret was safe with Natasha. But she also knew it would be futile reasoning with a raging man, so she decided to sit quietly with her head bowed as he unleashed a verbal lashing, as he called her a stupid idiot and a bloody fool. The man who had promised to always take care of her was standing above her vomiting a parade of insults, spewing out venom she never thought he had inside him. For the first time in a long love affair, she was afraid he would beat her. She was almost certain he would beat her. And if he had, she would have known that it was not her Jende who was beating her but a grotesque being created by the sufferings of an American immigrant life. ~ Imbolo Mbue
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Imbolo Mbue
All reasoning presumes premises or intuitions or ultimate convictions that cannot be proved by any foundations or facts more basic than themselves, and hence there are irreducible convictions present wherever one attempts to apply logic to experience. One always operates within boundaries established by one's first principles, and asks only the questions that those principles permit. ~ David Bentley Hart
Motivated Reasoning quotes by David Bentley Hart
The mind of a soul is beyond another's imagination. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
I find no flaw in your reasoning about the Analytical Engine; I admire it; but you are aware that it rests entirely on the hypothesis that I care for the 'whole human race. ~ Charles Babbage
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Charles Babbage
It was a good answer that was made by one who when they showed him hanging in a temple a picture of those who had paid their vows as having escaped shipwreck, and would have him say whether he did not now acknowledge the power of the gods, - 'Aye,' asked he again, 'but where are they painted that were drowned after their vows?' And such is the way of all superstition, whether in astrology, dreams, omens, divine judgments, or the like; wherein men, having a delight in such vanities, mark the events where they are fulfilled, but where they fail, though this happens much oftener, neglect and pass them by. ~ Francis Bacon
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Francis Bacon
Romney had tried to explain his reasoning to this chorus of confidants, but they were still urging him not to shut the door. They contended that even if he didn't want to launch a formal campaign right now, it would be a mistake to take himself entirely out of the running. They laid out a vivid, detailed scenario in which a fractured Republican Party - divided by a wide field of niche presidential candidates - fails to unite behind a single nominee in 2016, and ends up with a chaotic, historic floor fight at the national convention. Facing a televised descent into disarray, the GOP delegates would naturally turn to Romney - the fully vetted, steady-handed Republican statesman - for salvation. Your party might still need you, Mitt's loyalists insisted. The country might still need you! ~ McKay Coppins
Motivated Reasoning quotes by McKay Coppins
One very important factor for sustaining hope is to have an optimistic attitude. Optimism doesn't mean that you are blind to the reality of the situation. It means that you remain motivated to seek a solution to whatever problems arise. Optimism involves looking at a situation not only in relation to problems that arise, but also seeking out some benefit - looking at it in terms of its potential positive outcome. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Tavoris Cloud might actually be hungrier than me. How often do you hear a fighter say that his opponent is hungrier than he is? I don't need hunger. I'm motivated by my desire to prove that I'm different and that I can still silence the critics. ~ Bernard Hopkins
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Bernard Hopkins
Instinct is an animal faculty, independent of instruction and reasoning, but far inferior to intuition, which is a grace unique to humanity. ~ Dean Koontz
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Dean Koontz
There are skeptics who do not come to their view because they have a source of income from carbon polluters. ~ Al Gore
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Al Gore
On the Logical Reasoning, ask the speaker: Oh yeah, asshole? What evidence do you have for that position? ~ Nathan Fox
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Nathan Fox
Nobody has it all figured out, not even me - anybody who thinks otherwise, is an idiot. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Abhijit Naskar
I have just been through the process of killing a cistudo for the sake of science; but I cannot excuse myself for this murder, and see that such actions are inconsistent with the poetic perception, however they may serve science, and will affect the quality of my observations. I pray that I may walk more innocently and serenely through nature. No reasoning whatever reconciles me to this act. It affects my day injuriously. I have lost some self-respect. I have a murderer's experience to a degree. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The fighting was horrendous. Bloodshed and death lie everywhere around us. It was not exciting, Vindhya. It is fearsome, and we were all scared out of our wits. There is no honour in battle but to protect you, my love. We have won the gates of Grilsom and lost the fortress of Loare...but we've gained allies from the Knights of Scrivehrim, and enemies of the dark elves of Scryire. There is no winning in War, my sweet...only loss. People die on
every side. How can any battle be won with such consequence and loss? I do not understand war. It's so unfair, so...unjustified.

We take innocent lives, yet we gain medals of highest honour and divine, sacred blessings. What is the sense of it? And even much less do I understand Andsar's concept of celibacy in soldiers, and that they choose to stay alone their entire lives. I might understand, were the reasoning that we would leave no one behind to suffer...but there is no reason for it. They tell us we are wrong to love one another, and so they justify our love by sending me to my assured death. If anyone were to find out about us, we'd both surely be killed. Love like this, though…I believe it is worth the cost of my life, if I could only be with you one moment. ~ Jennifer Megan Varnadore
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Jennifer Megan Varnadore
Life, the moment. Where the magic is. That's what really keeps me motivated, alive, hungry. I'm still as excited and motivated now as I was twenty-five years ago, and that's because I really live for those moments. And that's where the art comes from, that's where the music is born, that's where it all appears. I love it. ~ Lenny Kravitz
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Lenny Kravitz
I think it's more important to concentrate on trying to be, simply, happy. Once you've known deep despair, you feel even more motivated to be as happy as possible. That's how I feel. ~ Emily Susan Rapp
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Emily Susan Rapp
Intellect is the virtue of ignoring one's emotions' attempt to contaminate one's opinions. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
If you do believe that earning notches in my belt is what I'm trying to do here, then aren't those very notches why you came to me?"
This girl wasn't stupid, just angry. Her mouth pressed into a thin line; she hated that Trisha was right, but she also understood that Trisha was indeed right.
"I came to you because my brother's friend believed that you could cure me, not play chess with my body parts." Trisha could see another painting, a chessboard with scrotums and vaginas, and in place of the king: eyeballs. Well, this was checkmate. ~ Sonali Dev
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Sonali Dev
I'm very motivated by the occasional creative payoff that comes when something goes really well, be it a song, a recording or performance. The payoff is enormous - when you get it. Most of the time, though, I'm filled with self-loathing and general frustration at the limitations I have as a musician. ~ Ian Anderson
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Ian Anderson
Our greatest strength lies in our ability to channelize our energy for the right cause, and stay motivated against all the odds. ~ Amit Ray
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Amit Ray
Nothing threatens freedom of the personality and the meaning of life like war, poverty, terror. But there are also indirect and only slightly more remote dangers. One of these is the stupefaction of man (the "gray mass," to use the cynical term of bourgeois prognosticators) by mass culture with its intentional or commercially motivated lowering of intellectual level and content, with its stress on entertainment or utilitarianism, and with its carefully protective censorship. ~ Andrei Sakharov
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Andrei Sakharov
In reality, though, almost all voters now had their minds made up. You didn't need to persuade them of whom to vote for - indeed, you couldn't persuade them of whom to vote for. What you needed to do was excite the group of them who, if they were going to vote, were going to vote for you. Those people had to register, they had to remember where their polling place was, they had to take time out of their day to go cast a ballot. America isn't like Australia, where voting is compulsory. We make it both optional and, in many places, difficult, so a winning campaign needs not just supporters but motivated supporters. ~ Ezra Klein
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Ezra Klein
Learn to take losses quickly and cleanly. There is something about inside information which seems to paralyze a man's reasoning powers. Beware of barbers, beauticians, waiters - or anyone - bringing gifts of 'inside' information or tips. Don't try to be a jack of all investment. Stick to the field you know best. ~ Bernard Baruch
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Bernard Baruch
The errors which arise from the absence of facts are far more numerous and more durable than those which result from unsound reasoning respecting true data. ~ Charles Babbage
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Charles Babbage
We are motivated by a keen desire for praise, and the better a man is the more he is inspired by glory. The very philosophers themselves, even in those books which they write in contempt of glory, inscribe their names. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Marcus Tullius Cicero
But, I swear, they're turning Donna into Annie Hall this season. More ties. More suits. But they're also keeping her really motivated, ya know? Like, wanting to be a rock journalist. Wanting to be the first woman president. ~ Laura Prepon
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Laura Prepon
But they can rule by fraud, and by fraud eventually acquire access to the tools they need to finish the job of killing off the Constitution.'
'What sort of tools?'
'More stringent security measures. Universal electronic surveillance. No-knock laws. Stop and frisk laws. Government inspection of first-class mail. Automatic fingerprinting, photographing, blood tests, and urinalysis of any person arrested before he is charged with a crime. A law making it unlawful to resist even unlawful arrest. Laws establishing detention camps for potential subversives. Gun control laws. Restrictions on travel. The assassinations, you see, establish the need for such laws in the public mind. Instead of realizing that there is a conspiracy, conducted by a handful of men, the people reason - or are manipulated into reasoning - that the entire population must have its freedom restricted in order to protect the leaders. The people agree that they themselves can't be trusted. ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose. ~ Myles Munroe
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Myles Munroe
Both induction and deduction, reasoning from the particular and the general, and back again from the universal to the specific, form the essence to scientific thinking. ~ Hans Christian Von Baeyer
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Hans Christian Von Baeyer
60% of workers surveyed said if their employer took action to support the mental wellbeing of all staff, they would feel more loyal, motivated, committed and be likely to recommend their workplace as a good place to work. ~ Paul Farmer
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Paul Farmer
The hardest part of any important task is getting started on it in the first place. Once you actually begin work on a valuable task, you seem to be naturally motivated to continue. ~ Brian Tracy
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Brian Tracy
From a drop of water a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other. ~ Arthur Conan Doyle
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Truly conservative actions arise from intelligent hypotheses, correct facts and sound reasoning. ~ Warren Buffett
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Warren Buffett
Sometimes what you see is not real, and the reality is not what you see. Somewhere between both these reasoning resides a fact: where there is a lack of trust and confidence, perception will always differ with reality. ~ Ashish Patel
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Ashish Patel
Philosophy, like science, consists of theories or insights arrived at as a result of systemic reflection or reasoning in regard to the data of experience. It involves, therefore, the analysis of experience and the synthesis of the results of analysis into a comprehensive or unitary conception. Philosophy seeks a totality and harmony of reasoned insight into the nature and meaning of all the principal aspects of reality. ~ Joseph Alexander Leighton
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Joseph Alexander Leighton
NVC is interested in learning that is motivated by reverence for life, by a desire to learn skills, to contribute better to our own well-being and the well-being of others. ~ Marshall B. Rosenberg
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Marshall B. Rosenberg
There's a direct correlation between faith in the righteousness of Christ and zeal in the cause of Christ. The more a person counts as loss his own righteousness and lays hold by faith of the righteousness of Christ, the more he'll be motivated to live and work for Christ. ~ Jerry Bridges
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Jerry Bridges
It is curious how tyrannical the habit of reasoning is. ~ James Russell Lowell
Motivated Reasoning quotes by James Russell Lowell
The middle-class parents talked things through with their children, reasoning with them. They didn't just issue commands. They expected their children to talk back to them, to negotiate, to question adults in positions of authority. ~ Anonymous
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Anonymous
And while faith based on theological reasoning is today universally engaged in a bitter struggle with doubt and resistance from the prevailing brand of rationalism, it does seem that the naked fundamental experience itself, that primal seizure of mystic insight, stripped of religious concepts, perhaps no longer to be regarded as a religious experience at all, has undergone an immense expansion and now forms the soul of that complex irrationalism that haunts our era like a night bird lost in the dawn. ~ Robert Musil
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Robert Musil
And all my ethical reasoning crumbles to ash in the sheer fact of his presence. Because together, even in darkness, we light up a room; because the clotted guilt inside me breaks up and disperses before a surge of stupid happiness; because I love him, and I know I cannot leave him, am incapable of leaving him, unless he asks me to go. And he has not asked me. And that is the miracle which I live with, every day. ~ Anna Lyndsey
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Anna Lyndsey
The autobiographical self has prompted extended memory, reasoning, imagination, creativity and language. And out of that came the instruments of culture - religions, justice, trade, the arts, science, technology. ~ Antonio Damasio
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Antonio Damasio
When a husband and wife love each other, they reflect that same love that motivated Christ. They die to themselves and become one. ~ Aaron Smith
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Aaron Smith
Prejudice means literally pre-judgment, the rejection of a contention out of hand, before examining the evidence. Prejudice is the result of powerful emotions, not of sound reasoning. ~ Carl Sagan
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Carl Sagan
needed someone intelligent, motivated, funny, caring, strong, tolerant - because let's face it, I was no picnic. Someone ~ Genna Rulon
Motivated Reasoning quotes by Genna Rulon
Profound sadness is always the result of an unhealthy condition of the body ... We [should] say, 'I am sad; everything looks black to me; but external events are in no way responsible. It's my body that insists on reasoning. These are the opinions of my stomach.' ~ Emile Chartier
