The letter we all love to receive is one that carries so much of the writer's personality that she seems to be sitting beside us, looking at us directly and talking just as she really would, could she have come on a magic carpet, instead of sending her proxy in ink-made characters on mere paper. ~ Emily Post
Mossflower Characters quotes by Emily Post
My characters are all "just people" - people you might know - and the things that happen are things that anybody might do if they lived on a freighter that spent most of its time in the Deep Dark. ~ Nathan Lowell
Mossflower Characters quotes by Nathan Lowell
I don't know your story or your dreams or the things that steal your sleep, but I know they matter. I hope you story is rich with characters, rich with friends and conversation. I hope you know some people who carry you, and I hope you have the honor of carrying them. I hope that there's beauty in your memories, and I hope it doesn't haunt you. And if it does, then I hope there is someone who will walk you through the night and remind you of the promise of the sunrise, that beauty keeps coming, that there are futures worth waiting and fighting for, and that you were made to dream. ~ Jamie Tworkowski
Mossflower Characters quotes by Jamie Tworkowski
Now "The Arabian Nights," some of which, but not nearly all, are given in this volume, are only fairy tales of the East. The people of Asia, Arabia, and Persia told them in their own way, not for children, but for grown-up people. There were no novels then, nor any printed books, of course; but there were people whose profession it was to amuse men and women by telling tales. They dressed the fairy stories up, and made the characters good Mahommedans, living in Bagdad or India. The events were often supposed to happen in the reign of the great Caliph, or ruler of the Faithful, Haroun al Raschid, who lived in Bagdad in 786-808 A.D. The vizir who accompanies the Caliph was also a real person of the great family of the Barmecides. He was put to death by the Caliph in a very cruel way, nobody ever knew why. The stories must have been told in their present shape a good long while after the Caliph died, when nobody knew very exactly what had really happened. At last some storyteller thought of writing down the tales, and fixing them into a kind of framework, as if they had all been narrated to a cruel Sultan by his wife. Probably the tales were written down about the time when Edward I. was fighting Robert Bruce. But changes were made in them at different times, and a great deal that is very dull and stupid was put in, and plenty of verses. Neither the verses nor the dull pieces are given in this book. ~ Muhsin Mahdi
Mossflower Characters quotes by Muhsin Mahdi
That is the beauty of having characters that don't make a big deal out of being gay, or lesbian, or whatever. They are just what they are, and that is acceptable - and that nobody should question that and that love is love. ~ Katrina Law
Mossflower Characters quotes by Katrina Law
I see things in a specific way. All the films are different. There are specific characters and scenes and locations and ideas. There are colors I want to see. There are movements and things ... The films are different, but the approach is the same. ~ Harmony Korine
Mossflower Characters quotes by Harmony Korine
I keep to a minimum dialect, in-jokes about football (soccer) teams and soap opera characters, so as not to lose North American readers. ~ Peter Robinson
Mossflower Characters quotes by Peter Robinson
Truly great actors carry their characters in silence with them. They communicate without words the relationships that predate the movie. ~ Sam Mendes
Mossflower Characters quotes by Sam Mendes
I buy tons of magazines. They're a big part of how I research characters. And I keep them around and go back to them years later. I just have stacks. ~ Jennifer Morrison
Mossflower Characters quotes by Jennifer Morrison
For my own family, I would always choose the makeshift, surrogate family formed by various characters unrelated by blood. ~ Anne Tyler
Mossflower Characters quotes by Anne Tyler
I play characters who are comfortable naked, but that's something you work up to. I did a play off-Broadway in New York when I was in college. It was full-frontal nudity. It's nerve-racking. ~ Joe Manganiello
Mossflower Characters quotes by Joe Manganiello
We don't want to watch boring characters. ~ Megalyn Echikunwoke
Mossflower Characters quotes by Megalyn Echikunwoke
Perhaps this is what Henry James meant when he talked about the "irresponsibility" of characters. Characters are irresponsible, art is irresponsible when compared to life, because it is first and foremost important that a character be real, and as readers or watchers we tend to applaud any effort made towards the construction of that reality. We do not, of course, indulge actual people in the world this way at all. In real life, the fact that something seems real to someone is not enough to interest us, or to convince us that that reality is interesting. But the self-reality of fictional characters is deeply engrossing, which is why villains are lovable in literature in ways that they are not in life. ~ James Wood
Mossflower Characters quotes by James Wood
I love flawed characters, male or female, and I only want to talk about flawed characters, really, in what I do. ~ Jenji Kohan
Mossflower Characters quotes by Jenji Kohan
To me, part of the fascinating profession of acting is to participate in all these strange situations, to try to understand all these interesting characters, fictitious or real, their human nature ... It's extraordinarily fascinating. ~ Max Von Sydow

Strong characters of their sort tend to gravitate together. Pride has a part to play in it, and other emotions too. Neither wishes to fail; each redoubles their effort to impress. Things get done - but not always the right things or not always the things expected. and there's not much you can do to stop it. ~ Jonathan Stroud
Mossflower Characters quotes by Jonathan Stroud

Mossflower Characters quotes by Jeffrey Eugenides
I love making up stories. I love getting lost in other worlds and being with other characters. I love the way I think I'm in control and then the characters and stories take on a life of their own.
I love how I can incorporate my own faith into the stories I write.
Writing is both discovery and creating and with each book I do that. Discover and create. It can be an adventure some days, a nightmare others. I also like that I can do this wearing ugly clothes. ~ Carolyne Aarsen
Mossflower Characters quotes by Carolyne Aarsen
I enjoy playing characters where I get to sort of change my look, my voice. It's not about what she wears, it's about what she's got inside. ~ Linda Cardellini

Mossflower Characters quotes by Nancy Kress
We were pregnant at the time, and while I was out there I started to realize that if I had a daughter, there would come a day when I would have to apologize to her for my profession. I would have to apologize for the way it treats and speaks to women readers, and the way it treats its female characters. ~ Matt Fraction
Mossflower Characters quotes by Matt Fraction
