The modern architect is, generally speaking, art's greatest enemy. ~ Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Modern Architecture quotes by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
What are the dead, anyway, but waves and energy? Light shining from a dead star?

That, by the way, is a phrase of Julian's. I remember it from a lecture of his on the Iliad, when Patroklos appears to Achilles in a dream. There is a very moving passage where Achilles overjoyed at the sight of the apparition – tries to throw his arms around the ghost of his old friend, and it vanishes. The dead appear to us in dreams, said Julian, because that's the only way they can make us see them; what we see is only a projection, beamed from a great distance, light shining at us from a dead star…

Which reminds me, by the way, of a dream I had a couple of weeks ago.

I found myself in a strange deserted city – an old city, like London – underpopulated by war or disease. It was night; the streets were dark, bombed-out, abandoned. For a long time, I wandered aimlessly – past ruined parks, blasted statuary, vacant lots overgrown with weeds and collapsed apartment houses with rusted girders poking out of their sides like ribs. But here and there, interspersed among the desolate shells of the heavy old public buildings, I began to see new buildings, too, which were connected by futuristic walkways lit from beneath. Long, cool perspectives of modern architecture, rising phosphorescent and eerie from the rubble.

I went inside one of these new buildings. It was like a laboratory, maybe, or a museum. My footsteps echoed on the tile floors. There was a cluste ~ Donna Tartt
Modern Architecture quotes by Donna Tartt
The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Modern Architecture quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
I began to see new buildings, too, which were connected by futuristic walkways lit from beneath. Long, cool perspectives of modern architecture, rising phosphorescent and eerie from the rubble. ~ Donna Tartt
Modern Architecture quotes by Donna Tartt
Many of the received models of modern architecture and planning owe their ultimate origin to the building code and public health reform movements of the second half of the 19th century. ~ Kenneth Frampton
Modern Architecture quotes by Kenneth Frampton
To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history but to articulate it. ~ Daniel Libeskind
Modern Architecture quotes by Daniel Libeskind
Nothing is as dangerous in architecture as dealing with separated problems. If we split life into separated problems we split the possibilities to make good building art. ~ Alvar Aalto
Modern Architecture quotes by Alvar Aalto
Architecture is the will of an epoch translated into space. ~ Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
Modern Architecture quotes by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
One Hyde Park squatted next to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel like a stack of office furniture, and with all the elegance and charm of the inside of a photocopier. Albeit a brand new photocopier that doubled as a fax and document scanner. ~ Ben Aaronovitch
Modern Architecture quotes by Ben Aaronovitch
Modern architecture has the potential to send you to an early grave. ~ Steven Magee
Modern Architecture quotes by Steven Magee
Modern architecture predominately specializes in designing what are essentially dimly lit caves. ~ Steven Magee
Modern Architecture quotes by Steven Magee
We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims. ~ R. Buckminster Fuller
Modern Architecture quotes by R. Buckminster Fuller
Architecture, of all the arts, is the one which acts the most slowly, but the most surely, on the soul. ~ Ernest Dimnet
Modern Architecture quotes by Ernest Dimnet
Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die, but long after we are gone be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistence. ~ Daniel Burnham
Modern Architecture quotes by Daniel Burnham
Modern architecture only becomes modern with its engagement with the media. ~ Beatriz Colomina
Modern Architecture quotes by Beatriz Colomina
I'm such a negative person, and always have been. Was I born that way? I don't know. I am constantly disgusted by reality, horrified and afraid. I cling desperately to the few things that give me some solace, that make me feel good.

I hate most of humanity. Though I might be very fond of particular individuals, humanity in general fills me with contempt and despair. I hate most of what passes for civilization. I hate the modern world. For one thing there are just too Goddamn many people. I hate the hordes, the crowds in their vast cities, with all their hateful vehicles, their noise and their constant meaningless comings and goings. I hate cars. I hate modern architecture. Every building built after 1955 should be torn down!

I despise modern music. Words cannot express how much it gets on my nerves – the false, pretentious, smug assertiveness of it. I hate business, having to deal with money. Money is one of the most hateful inventions of the human race. I hate the commodity culture, in which everything is bought and sold. No stone is left unturned. I hate the mass media, and how passively people suck up to it.

I hate having to get up in the morning and face another day of this insanity. I hate having to eat, shit, maintain the body – I hate my body. The thought of my internal functions, the organs, digestion, the brain, the nervous system, horrify me.

Nature is horrible. It's not cute and loveable. It's kill or be killed. It's very ~ Robert Crumb
Modern Architecture quotes by Robert Crumb
Toward the end of the Second World War, a
new consciousness arose amongst the public
and policy makers of the Western World. After
ten years of crippling economic depression
and another five at war, the public demanded
something new from their disintegrating
urban environments. ~ Lucas Mascotto-Carbone
Modern Architecture quotes by Lucas Mascotto-Carbone
All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space. ~ Philip Johnson
Modern Architecture quotes by Philip Johnson
I could have been an architect, but I don't think I'd have been very happy. Nearly all modern architecture is a silly game as far as I can see. ~ Roger Waters
Modern Architecture quotes by Roger Waters
Landscaping is the great cardinal sin of modern architecture. It's not your garden, it's not a park - it's a formless patch of grass, shrubbery and the occasional tree that exists purely to stop the original developer's plans from looking like a howling concrete wilderness. ~ Ben Aaronovitch
Modern Architecture quotes by Ben Aaronovitch
Some authors regard morality in the same light as we regard modern architecture. Convenience is the first thing to be looked for. ~ Luc De Clapiers
Modern Architecture quotes by Luc De Clapiers
Modern architecture does not mean the use of immature new materials; the main thing is to refine materials in a more human direction. ~ Alvar Aalto
Modern Architecture quotes by Alvar Aalto
The terrifying and edible beauty of Art Nouveau architecture. ~ Salvador Dali
Modern Architecture quotes by Salvador Dali
It is my trade," he said. "I work for the bean family, and every day there are deaths among the beans, mostly from thirst. They shrivel and die, they go blind in their one black eye, and I put them in one of these tiny coffins. Beans, you know, are beautifully shaped, like a new church, like modern architecture, like a planned city ~ Janet Frame
Modern Architecture quotes by Janet Frame
Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins. ~ Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
Modern Architecture quotes by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
In the '60s when I was a student, there was this campaign to destroy 75 percent of the old buildings in Paris, replacing them with modern architecture. I realized this as a dangerous utopia. This modern vision did not understand the richness of the city. Thankfully, such destruction did not happen. ~ Christian De Portzamparc
Modern Architecture quotes by Christian De Portzamparc
All architects want to live beyond their deaths. ~ Philip Johnson
Modern Architecture quotes by Philip Johnson
Until the Eighties, Oslo was a rather boring town, but it's changed a lot, and is now much more cosmopolitan. If I go downtown, I visit the harbour to see the tall ships and the ferries, and to admire the modern architecture such as the Opera House or the new Astrup Fearnley Museum on the water's edge. ~ Jo Nesbo
Modern Architecture quotes by Jo Nesbo
Modern architecture is not a style, it's an attitude ~ Marcel Breuer
Modern Architecture quotes by Marcel Breuer
Switzerland is a small, steep country, much more up and down than sideways, and is all stuck over with large brown hotels built on the cuckoo clock style of architecture. ~ Ernest Hemingway,
Modern Architecture quotes by Ernest Hemingway,
To create architecture is to put in order. Put what in order? Function and objects. ~ Le Corbusier
Modern Architecture quotes by Le Corbusier
On the sidewalks everyone holding either a giant coffee or a cell phone, as though a law had been declared against public displays of empty-handedness. ~ Andrew Pyper
Modern Architecture quotes by Andrew Pyper
Hoping to settle the wheelchair matter once and for all, Graham dragged his chief of construction, his chief of architecture, and a film crew out to Dulles Airport, whose escalators were approximately the same width as those planned for Metro. There he produced a variety of braces and crutches. As the cameras rolled, Graham rode up and down the escalators using one aid after another, climaxing by riding both directions in a wheelchair, facing up each time. Graham clearly believed he had proved beyond doubt that 'it is entirely possible, easily and safely, for wheelchair travelers to use escalators.' His aides watched in disbelief; a fit and fearless major general in his fifties hardly represented the disabled population, whatever braces he strapped to his legs. All he had proved, concluded the WMATA architect Sprague Thresher, was that 'if everybody who had to use a wheelchair was Jack Graham, we wouldn't need elevators. ~ Zachary M. Schrag
Modern Architecture quotes by Zachary M. Schrag
Most baffling of all to a modern literalist, the God who seems to live locally in the sky, also made it. ~ C.S. Lewis
Modern Architecture quotes by C.S. Lewis
I like to be surrounded by books. My wife Evelyn has a Ph.D. in comparative literature, so we have a lot of her Spanish and German literature books which are wasted on me, plus a lot of novels and books on art and architecture shared by us both. Evelyn used to edit an art magazine called 'FMR,' so we have a common interest in design. ~ David Chipperfield
Modern Architecture quotes by David Chipperfield
Japanese architecture is very much copied in this country and in Europe. ~ Minoru Yamasaki
Modern Architecture quotes by Minoru Yamasaki
Architecture is about public space held by buildings. ~ Richard Rogers
Modern Architecture quotes by Richard Rogers
For at the beginning of the twentieth century, the nation had been struggling to find its way. Terror had raged, a second civil war had threatened to split the nation into new feuding armies, and the inequities of industrial life had brutalized too many lives. Three men who were caught up in those traumatic times, shaped by them, found with their talents, energy, and ideals a way out of it, both for themselves and for the nation. Darrow, Billy, D.W. were all flawed - egotists, temperamental, and too often morally complacent. But as their careers and lives intersected in Los Angeles at the tail end of the first decade of the twentieth century, each in his own way helped to move America into the modern world. They were individuals willing to fight for their beliefs; and the legacy of their battles, their cultural and political brawls, remains part of our national consciousness. ~ Howard Blum
Modern Architecture quotes by Howard Blum
Modern American literature was born in protest, born in rebellion, born out of the sense of loss and indirection which was imposed upon the new generations out of the realization that the old formal culture-the "New England idea"-could no longer serve. ~ Alfred Kazin
Modern Architecture quotes by Alfred Kazin
If humanity is being swallowed by a modern primitivism, imagination might be the thing that saves us all. ~ Geoffrey S. Fletcher
Modern Architecture quotes by Geoffrey S. Fletcher
The modern artist ... is working and expressing an inner world - in other words - expressing the energy, the motion, and other inner forces. ~ Jackson Pollock
Modern Architecture quotes by Jackson Pollock
It's like making a sandwich. I start with the bread and the meat. That's the architecture. Add some cheese, lettuce and tomato. That's character development and polishing. Then, the fun part. All the little historical details and the slang and the humor is the mayonnaise. I go back and slather that shit everywhere. The mayo is the best part. I'm a bit messy with the mayo. ~ Laini Giles
Modern Architecture quotes by Laini Giles
It's a commonplace of parenting and modern genetics that parents have little or no influence on the characters of their children. You never know who you are going to get. ~ Ian McEwan
Modern Architecture quotes by Ian McEwan
Nearly everybody I know does something to try to remove herself to clear her head and to have enough time and space to think ... All of us instinctively feel that something inside us is crying out for more spaciousness and stillness to offset the exhilarations of this movement and the fun and diversion of the modern world. ~ Pico Iyer
Modern Architecture quotes by Pico Iyer
The notion of freedom proclaimed by the modern world is anti-discipline. But true freedom cannot be separated from discipline. ~ Matthew Kelly
Modern Architecture quotes by Matthew Kelly
It is certain that the Jew, if he desired-or if they were driven to it, as the antisemites seem to wish-could now have the ascendancy, nay, literally the supremacy, over Europe; that they are not working or planning for that end is equally sure ... The resourcefulness of the modern Jews, both in mind and soul, is extraordinary ... ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Modern Architecture quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Nothing is so aggravating as calmness. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Modern Architecture quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
When I was a teenager, I worked in New Orleans for a chef named Paul Prudhomme. That was a very important time in my life as a chef. I developed my palate and learned a lot. And here I am now. I specialize in modern Mexican and contemporary Latin cuisines. ~ Aaron Sanchez
Modern Architecture quotes by Aaron Sanchez
If modern design moved the stage picture away from the specific, tangible, illusionistic world of Romanticism and Realism into a generalized, theatrical, and poetic realm in which the pictorial image functioned as an extension of the playwright's themes and structures (a metanarrative), then postmodern design is a dissonant reminder that no single point of view can predominate, even within a single image. ~ Arnold Aronson
Modern Architecture quotes by Arnold Aronson
Remember this, take this to heart, live by it, die for it if necessary: that our patriotism is medieval, outworn, obsolete; that the modern patriotism, the true patriotism, the only rational patriotism, is loyalty to the Nation ALL the time, loyalty to the Government when it deserves it. ~ Mark Twain
Modern Architecture quotes by Mark Twain
In modern life we move from one insulated igloo to another...serially abstracting ourselves from nature and its impacts. ~ Rinker Buck
Modern Architecture quotes by Rinker Buck
The Greeks invented the idea of nemesis to show how any single virtue, stubbornly maintained gradually changes into a destructive vice. Our success, our industry, our habit of work have produced our economic nemesis. Work made modern men great, but now threatens to usurp our souls, to inundate the earth in things and trash, to destroy our capacity to love and wonder. ~ Sam Keen
Modern Architecture quotes by Sam Keen
If creative procrastination, selectively applied, prevented Leonardo from finishing a few commissions - of minor importance when one is struggling with the inner workings of the cosmos - then only someone who is a complete captive of the modern cult of productive mediocrity . . . could fault him for it. Productive mediocrity requires discipline of an ordinary kind. It is safe and threatens no one. Nothing will be changed by mediocrity. . . . But genius is uncontrolled and uncontrollable. You cannot produce a work of genius according to a schedule or an outline. ~ Adam M. Grant
Modern Architecture quotes by Adam M. Grant
Since early childhood, their emotions have been conditioned by the tribal premise that one must "belong," one must be "in," one must swim with the "mainstream," one must follow the lead of "those who know." A man's frustrated mind adds another emotion to the tribal conditioning: a blindly bitter resentment of his own intellectual subservience. Modern men are gregarious and antisocial at the same time. They have no inkling of what constitutes a rational human association. ~ Ayn Rand
Modern Architecture quotes by Ayn Rand
The discovery of personal whiteness among the world's peoples is a very modern thing - a nineteenth and twentieth century matter, indeed. The ancient world would have laughed at such a distinction. ~ W.E.B. Du Bois
Modern Architecture quotes by W.E.B. Du Bois
Real consciousness is touch. Thought is getting out of touch.

The crux of the whole problem lies here, in the duality of man's consciousness. Touch, the being in touch, is the basis of all consciousness, and it is the basis of enduring happiness. Thought is a secondary form of consciousness, Mind is a secondary form of existence, a getting out of touch, a standing clear, in order to come to a better adjustment in touch.

Man, poor man, has to learn to function in these two ways of consciousness. When a man is in touch, he is non-mental, his mind is quiescent, his bodily centres are active. When a man's mind is active in real mental activity, the bodily centres are quiescent, switched off, the man is out of touch. The animals remain always in touch. And man, poor modern man, with his worship of his own god, which is his own mind glorified, is permanently out of touch. To be always irrevocably in touch is to feel sometimes imprisoned. But to be permanently out of touch is at last excruciatingly painful, it is a state of being nothing, and being nowhere, and at the same time being conscious and capable of extreme discomfort and ennui. ~ D.H. Lawrence
Modern Architecture quotes by D.H. Lawrence
There are indeed moral universals - the Hebrew Bible calls them 'the covenant with Noah' and they form the basis of modern codes of human rights. But they exist to create space for cultural and religious difference… ~ Jonathan Sacks
Modern Architecture quotes by Jonathan Sacks
A profound piece of surgery has to take place in the very psyche of the disinherited before the great claim of the religion of Jesus can be presented. The great stretches of barren places in the soul must be revitalized, brought to life, before they can be challenged. Tremendous skill and power must be exercised to show the disinherited the awful results of the role of negative deception into which their lives have been cast. How to do this is perhaps the greatest challenge that the religion of Jesus faces in modern life.

Mere preaching is not enough. What are words, however sacred and powerful, in the presence of the grim facts of the daily struggle to survive? Any attempt to deal with this situation on a basis of values that disregard the struggle for survival appears to be in itself a compromise with life. It is only when people live in an environment in which they are not required to exert supreme effort into just keeping alive that they seem to be able to selects ends besides those of mere physical survival. ~ Howard Thurman
Modern Architecture quotes by Howard Thurman
Modern Darwinism makes it abundantly clear that many less ruthless traits, some not always admired by robber barons and Fuhrers - altruism, general intelligence, compassion - may be the key to survival. ~ Carl Sagan
Modern Architecture quotes by Carl Sagan
I'd rather be a football coach. That way you only lose eleven games a year. ~ Abe Lemons
Modern Architecture quotes by Abe Lemons
I came here in a car like everybody else. In a car filled with shit I thought meant something and shortly thereafter tossed on the street: DVDs, soon to be irrelevant, a box of digital and film cameras for a still-latent photography talent, a copy of On the Road that I couldn't finish, and a Swedish-modern lamp from Walmart. It was a long, dark drive from a place so small you couldn't find it on a generous map...Does anyone come to New York clean? I'm afraid not….Yes, I'd come to escape, but from what? The twin pillars of football and church? The low, faded homes on childless cul-de-sacs? Morning of the Gazette and boxed doughnuts? The sedated, sentimental middle of it? It didn't matter. I would never know exactly, for my life, like most, moved only imperceptibly and definitely forward...Let's say I was born in late June of 2006 when I came over the George Washington Bridge at seven a.m. with the sun circulating and dawning, the sky full of sharp corners of light, before the exhaust rose, before the heat gridlocked in, windows unrolled, radio turned up to some impossibly hopeful pop song, open, open, open. ~ Stephanie Danler
Modern Architecture quotes by Stephanie Danler
In order to be successful, Teenagers need to be practical as challenges they are faceing in modern life are numerous and complex. ~ Kishore Bansal
Modern Architecture quotes by Kishore Bansal
The idols of modern culture have had a profound influence on the shape of our work today. In traditional societies people found their meaning and sense of value by submitting their interests and sacrificing their desires to serve higher causes like God, family, and other people. In modern societies there is often no higher cause than individual interests and desires. This shift powerfully changed the role of work in people's lives - it now became the way we defined ourselves. Traditional cultures tended to see people's place on the social ladder as assigned by nature or convention, each family having its "proper place." That view had put too little stock in the role of individual talent, ambition, and hard work for determining the outcome of one's life. But modern society responded by putting too much stock in the autonomous person. ~ Timothy Keller
Modern Architecture quotes by Timothy Keller
Divorce is one of the loneliest of modern rituals. Before, during, and after the actual culmination of the legal process it is an ordeal that rips people away from their roots, their important relationships, and a part of themselves. There is really nothing like it - except perhaps war. ~ Suzanne Gordon
Modern Architecture quotes by Suzanne Gordon
In a modern dictionary, the noun "melancholy" has two definitions. First, it means "thoughtful or gentle sadness. ~ Joshua Wolf Shenk
Modern Architecture quotes by Joshua Wolf Shenk
Nietzsche is absolutely correct, even more correct today than when he wrote it in Thus Spake Zarathustra: I looked all about me for human beings but all I saw were fragments, deformed creatures with too much eye or too much ear. This is what the modern culture of specialized intellect-the kind of one-sidedness that banausic utilitarianism alone can value-works so hard to produce. ~ Kenny Smith
Modern Architecture quotes by Kenny Smith
Disgusted by the abuses to which it led, humanity repressed Christianity by which it had so long been dominated. Repressed, but not eliminated. Herein lies, I believe, the essence of the tragedy of modern times. The modern man lives as if Christianity were a negligible hypothesis with no relation to the concrete realities of the world and society. And yet at the bottom of his heart this man remains impregnated with Christianity, so that he lives in a state of perpetual ambivalence with regard to it. ~ Paul Tournier
Modern Architecture quotes by Paul Tournier
'Clothespin' was the first city monument on a large scale that could compete with the architecture around it. ~ Claes Oldenburg
Modern Architecture quotes by Claes Oldenburg
I don't want to pooh-pooh modern pop. I appreciate that as well, but my personal favorite kind of music is guitar-based rock. I like grunge and garage bands and alternative music, but that's more my personal taste. ~ Al Yankovic
