...Erich Fromm wondered why most people did not become insane in the face of the existential contradiction between a symbolic self, that seems to give man infinite worth in a timeless scheme of things, and a body that is worth about 98¢. ~ Ernest Becker
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Ernest Becker
The room shall speak, it must catch me up and hold me, I want to feel that I belong here, I want to hearken and know when I go back to the front line that the war will sink down, be drowned utterly in the great home-coming tide, know that it will then be past for ever, and not gnaw us continually, that it will have none but an outward power over us ... Nothing stirs; listless and wretched, like a condemned man, I sit there and the past withdraws itself. And at the same time I fear to importune it too much, because I do not know what might happen then. I am a soldier, I must cling to that. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
People tend to ask too many questions in love, and once you begin really wanting to know the answers, love is on its way out. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
To a woman flattery is not flattery. It is a compliment, which unfortunately in these miserable days has become all to rare. A woman is not a piece of steel furniture; she is a flower - she does not ask for reality; she wants the warm, gay sun of flattery. It is better to say something pretty to her every day, than to slave grimly for her all your life. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
A man whose consciousness is possessed by a particular content has an enormous dynamism in him, namely that of the unconscious content; but this counteracts the centroversion tendency of the ego to work for the whole rather than for the individual content. ~ Erich Neumann
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Neumann
Man's biological weakness is the condition of human culture. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
The task of critique is not to denounce the ideals, but to show their transformation into ideologies, and to challenge the ideology in the name of the betrayed ideal ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
The psychological analysis of any normal development will make it clear that, if he is to grow up, it is not merely unavoidable but actually essential that the individual should do and assimilate a certain amount of evil, and that he should be able to overcome the conflicts involved in this process. The achievement of independence involves the capacity of the ego not only to adopt the values of the collective but often also to secure the fulfilment of those needs of the individual which run counter to collective values – and this entails doing evil. ~ Erich Neumann
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Neumann
Some day perhaps our time will be known as the age of irony. Not the witty irony of the eighteenth century, but the stupid or malignant irony of a crude age of technological progress and cultural regression. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
Man's nature, his passions, and anxieties are a cultural product; as a matter of fact, man himself is the most important creation and achievement of the continuous human effort, the record of which we call history. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
The result of this one-sided patriarchal stance, demonstrable in all areas of life, is an un integrated man who is attacked by his repressed side and often enough overwhelmed by it. This transpires not only in the fate of the individual man as seduction by a "lower" anima, but equally through seduction by a compensatory ideology, for example materialism, to which "spirit" men are especially susceptible.
The man wants to remain exclusively masculine and out of fear rejects the transformative contact with a woman of equal status. Negativizing the Feminine in the patriarchate prevents the man from experiencing woman as a thou of equal but different status, and hence from coming to terms with her. The consequence of the patriarchal male's haughtiness toward women leads to the inability to make any genuine contact with the Feminine, i.e., not only in a real woman but also with the Feminine in himself, the unconscious. Whenever an integral relationship to the Feminine remains undeveloped, however, this means that, due to his fear, the male is unable to break through to his own wholeness that also embraces the Feminine. Thus the patriarchal culture's separation from the Feminine and from the unconscious becomes one of the essential causes for the crisis of fear in which the patriarchal world now finds itself. ~ Erich Neumann
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Neumann
Although champagne was served, the mood was curiously subdued. After this reunion, they would probably never meet together as a class again - at least not in such numbers. They would spend the next decades reading obituaries of the men who had started out in 1954 as rivals and today were leaving Harvard as brothers. This was the beginning of the end. They had met once more and just had time enough to learn that they liked one another. And to say goodbye. ~ Erich Segal
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Segal
I don't want to get old."
"You won't get old. Life will pass over your face, that will be all, and it will become more beautiful. One is old only when one no longer feels."
"No. When one no longer loves. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
One has the feeling of enormous safety. You don't have the torque from the propeller. You have no noise; it's almost like little electric motors humming inside, and you feel sort of safe. ~ Erich Warsitz
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Warsitz
When Fascism came into power, most people were unprepared, both theoretically and practically. They were unable to believe that man could exhibit such propensities for evil, such lust for power, such disregard for the rights of the weak, or such yearning for submission. Only a few had been aware of the rumbling of the volcano preceding the outbreak. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
[T]he person who is normal in terms of being well adapted is often less healthy than the neurotic person in terms of human values. Often he is well adapted only at the expense of having given up his self in order to become more or less the person he believes he is expected to be. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
Ravic emptied his glass. He got a package of cigarettes out of his pocket, took one out and lit it. His hands were not yet steady. He flung the match on the floor and ordered another calvados. That face, that smiling face which he thought he had just seen again - he must have been ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
I believe that the fundamental alternative for man is the choice between "life" and "death"; between creativity and destructive violence; between reality and illusions; between objectivity
and intolerance; between brotherhood-independence and dominance-submission. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
Love is an act of faith. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
Critical and radical thought will only bear fruit when it is blended with the most precious quality man is endowed with - the love of life ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
We are not only less reasonable and less decent in our dreams ... we are also more inteligent, wiser and capable of better judgment when we are asleep than when we are awake. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
Keep things at arm's length ... If you let anything come too near you want to hold on to it. And there is nothing a man can hold on to. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
The main condition for the achievement of love is the overcoming of one's narcissism. The narcissistic orientation is one in which one experiences as real only that which exists within oneself, while the phenomena in the outside world have no reality in themselves, but are experienced only from the viewpoint of their being useful or dangerous to one. The opposite pole to narcissism is objectivity; it is the faculty to see other people and things as they are, objectively, and to be able to separate this objective picture from a picture which is formed by one's desires and fears. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
In the authoritarian philosophy the concept of equality does not exist. The authoritarian character may sometimes use the word equality either conventionally or because it suits his purposes. But it has no real meaning or weight for him, since it concerns something outside the reach of his emotional experience. For him the world is composed of people with power and those without it, of superior ones and inferior ones. On the basis of his sado-masochistic strivings, he experiences only domination or submission, but never solidarity. Differences, whether of sex or race, to him are necessarily signs of superiority or inferiority. A difference which does not have this connotation is unthinkable to him. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
The most beautiful as well as the most ugly inclinations of man are not part of a fixed biologically given human nature, but result from the social process which creates man. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
The deepest need of the human being is to overcome our
separateness, to leave the prison of our loneliness. ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
The time has come for us to admit our insignificance by making discoveries in the infinite unexplored cosmos. Only then shall we realize that we are nothing but ants in the vast state of the universe. And yet our future and our opportunities lie in the universe, where gods promised they would. ~ Erich Von Daniken
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Von Daniken
No one will understand us – because in front of us there is a generation of men who did, it is true, share the years out here with us, but who already had a bed and a job and who are going back to their old positions, where they will forget all about the war – and behind us, a new generation is growing up, one like we used to be, and that generation will be strangers to us and will push us aside. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
In spite of the deep-seated craving for love, almost everything else is considered to be more important than love: success, prestige, money, power-almost all our energy is used for the learning of how to achieve these aims, and almost none to learn the art of loving.
Could it be that only those things are considered worthy of being learned with which one can earn money or prestige, and that love, which "only" profits the soul, but is profitless in the modern sense, is a luxury we have no right to spend energy on? ~ Erich Fromm
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Fromm
We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we believe in the war.
- All Quiet On The Western Front, Ch. 5 ~ Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Seligmann Fromm quotes by Erich Maria Remarque
And at night, waking out of a dream, overwhelmed and bewitched by the crowding apparitions, a man perceives with alarm how slight is the support, how thin the boundary that divides him from the darkness. We are little flames poorly sheltered by frail walls against the storm of dissolution and madness, in which we flicker and sometimes almost go out. Then the muffled roar of the battle becomes a ring that encircles us, we creep in upon ourselves, and with big eyes stare into the night. ~ Erich Maria Remarque
