Best Marriage quotes by Marianne Williamson
Unattended hurt, anger, and bitterness can destroy even the best marriage. Lean honestly into every hard place, each tender spot, because truthfulness hurts for a minute but silence is the kill shot. ~ Jen Hatmaker
Best Marriage quotes by Jen Hatmaker
I always felt that a marriage works best at a farm ... where you're together and everybody has clear-cut roles; they have chores, 'you take care of this' and you know. But it's hard. ~ Ethan Hawke
Best Marriage quotes by Ethan Hawke
I've always believed the two best anti-poverty programs are work and marriage. ~ Jim Talent
Best Marriage quotes by Jim Talent
Two fears alternate in marriage, of loneliness and of bondage. The dread of loneliness being keener than the fear of bondage, we get married. For one person who fears being thus tied there are four who dread being set free. Yet the love of liberty is a noble passion and one to which most married people secretly aspire, -- in moments when they are not neurotically dependent -- but by then it is too late; the ox does not become a bull, not the hen a falcon.

The fear of loneliness can be overcome, for it springs from weakness; human beings are intended to be free, and to be free is to be lonely, but the fear of bondage is the apprehension of a real danger, and so I find it all the more pathetic to watch young men and beautiful girls taking refuge in marriage from an imaginary danger, a sad loss to their friends ad a sore trial to each other. First love is the one most worth having, yet the best marriage is often the second, for we should marry only when the desire for freedom be spent; not till then does a man know whether he is the kind who can settle down. The most tragic breakings-up are of those couples who have married young and who have enjoyed seven years of happiness, after which the banked fires of passion and independence explode -- and without knowing why, for they still love each other, they set about accomplishing their common destruction. ~ Cyril Connolly
Best Marriage quotes by Cyril Connolly

Better no marriage, than a marriage short of the best. ~ Dinah Maria Murlock Craik
Best Marriage quotes by Dinah Maria Murlock Craik
I had a realization in the midst of my happy marriage that I had kind of lost most of my friends - my male friends in particular. And I started wondering if my wife, who was certainly my best friend, supplanted those relationships. ~ Matthew Weiner
Best Marriage quotes by Matthew Weiner
I was born to be married. I just feel comfortable there. I love the idea of being partnered for ever. I love my girlfriend, we've been best friends since I was 18. There's not a thing we haven't been through except for marriage ... We've had talks about what we would name our kids since we were in our 20s. ~ Beth Ditto
Best Marriage quotes by Beth Ditto

Best Marriage quotes by Seth Rogen
I've never really been very good at marriage. It's one of my failures. I've tried my best, but I do realise the common denominator is me; it's something I'm doing. ~ Len Goodman
Best Marriage quotes by Len Goodman
I guess you kind of got to realize that once you in a marriage, whatever it is, you gotta deal with it. Not necessarily that you got to accept it, but you have to deal with it and try your best to make it work for you, for the both of you. ~ Faith Evans
Best Marriage quotes by Faith Evans
Marriage, even the best marriages are tough. ~ Jayne Meadows
Best Marriage quotes by Jayne Meadows
I have spoken of reinventing marriage, of marriages achieving their rebirth in the middle age of the partners. This phenomenon has been called the 'comedy of remarriage' by Stanley Cavell, whose Pursuits of Happiness, a film book, is perhaps the best marriage manual ever published. One must, however, translate his formulation from the language of Hollywood, in which he developed it, into the language of middle age: less glamour, less supple youth, less fantasyland. Cavell writes specifically of Hollywood movies of the 1930s and 1940s in which couples -- one partner is often the dazzling Cary Grant -- learn to value each other, to educate themselves in equality, to remarry. Cavell recognizes that the actresses in these movie -- often the dazzling Katherine Hepburn -- are what made them possible. If read not as an account of beautiful people in hilarious situations, but as a deeply philosophical discussion of marriage, his book contains what are almost aphorisms of marital achievement. For example: ....'[The romance of remarriage] poses a structure in which we are permanently in doubt who the hero is, that is, whether it is the male or female who is the active partner, which of them is in quest, who is following whom.'

Cary grant & Katherine Hepburn "Above all, despite the sexual attractiveness of the actors in the movies he discusses, Cavell knows that sexuality is not the ultimate secret in these marriage: 'in God's intention a meet and happy conversation is th ~ Carolyn G. Heilbrun

Mama and Daddy King represent the best in manhood and womanhood, the best in a marriage, the kind of people we are trying to become. ~ Coretta Scott King
Best Marriage quotes by Coretta Scott King
I had 53 years of happy marriage and two daughters. These were the best things that happened in my life. ~ Henry Allingham
Best Marriage quotes by Henry Allingham
I think what makes our marriage work amid all the glare is that my husband is my best friend. He inspires everything in my life and enables me to do the best that I can. I want to hang out with him more than anyone. ~ Faith Hill
Best Marriage quotes by Faith Hill
I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house. ~ Zsa Zsa Gabor
Best Marriage quotes by Zsa Zsa Gabor
Neil [Simon] was considered our greatest [living playwright] at the time [of their marriage]. Maybe he still is; I don't know. But anyway, he was hugely successful, and I just kind of got folded into that. And in some ways, he protected me, but in other ways, I wasn't fully able to step out, you know? He didn't want me to go away so much. The work that we did together was great, and I don't regret it, but what I am saying is that I didn't get an opportunity to explore some other areas that were offered to me early on. I took what I might call a U-turn. ~ Marsha Mason
Best Marriage quotes by Marsha Mason
What can make a marriage work is surprisingly simple.
Happily married couple aren't smarter, richer or more psychologically astute than others. But in their day-to-day lives, they have hit upon a dynamic that keeps their negative thoughts and feelings about each other (which all couple have) from overwhelming their positive ones. They have what i call an emotionally intelligent marriage. ~ John Gottman And Nan Silver
Best Marriage quotes by John Gottman And Nan Silver
Marriage is marriage. Everybody has problems. ~ Mel Gibson
Best Marriage quotes by Mel Gibson
Each marriage bears the footprints of economic and cultural trends which originate far outside marriage. ~ Arlie Russell Hochschild
Best Marriage quotes by Arlie Russell Hochschild
A marriage only works if one opens to exactly that which one would never ask for otherwise. Only through rubbing oneself sore and losing oneself is one able to learn about oneself, God, and the world. Like every soteriological pathway, that of marriage is hard and painful. ~ Adolf Guggenbuhl-Craig
Best Marriage quotes by Adolf Guggenbuhl-Craig
Tis what marriage is all about, madam," he said. "Have you not realized it? 'Tis about discovering unknown facets of the character and experience and taste of one's spouse and learning to adjust one's life accordingly. 'Tis learning to hope that one's spouse is doing the same thing. ~ Mary Balogh
Best Marriage quotes by Mary Balogh
Sometimes divorce isn't an earth-shattering loss. Sometimes it's just two people waking up out of a fog. ~ Taylor Jenkins Reid
Best Marriage quotes by Taylor Jenkins Reid
When, some months later, Zoltan emailed me about his decision to run for president, I immediately called him. The first thing I asked was what his wife thought of the plan.

"Well, in a way," he said, "it was Lisa who gave me the idea. Remember how I said she wanted me to do something concrete, get some kind of a proper job?"

"I do," I said. "Although I'm guessing running for president on the immortality platform was not what she had in mind."

"That's correct," he confirmed. "It took a little while for her to come around to the idea."

"How did you break it to her?"

"I left a note on the refrigerator," he said, "and went out for a couple hours. ~ Mark O'Connell
Best Marriage quotes by Mark O'Connell
... marriage, they say, halves one's rights and doubles one's duties. ~ Louisa May Alcott
Best Marriage quotes by Louisa May Alcott
True marriage begins well before the wedding day, And the efforts of marriage continue well beyond the ceremony's end. A brief moment in time and the stroke of the pen are all that is needed to create the legal bond of marriage, but it takes a lifetime of love, commitment, forgiveness, and compromise to make marriage durable and everlasting. ~ Jamie McGuire
Best Marriage quotes by Jamie McGuire
a spouse is taking a part of his heart away from his mate and bringing it to an outside source. This is not only painful, but also unjust. It works against what God intended to develop in marriage - the mysterious unity that brings the couple closer to each other in ever-deepening ways. Triangulation betrays trust and fractures the union. ~ Henry Cloud
Best Marriage quotes by Henry Cloud
Social roles vary in the extent to which it is culturally permissible to express ambivalence or negative feelings toward them.Ambivalence can be admitted most readily toward those roles that are optional, least where they are considered primary. Thus men repress negative feelings toward work and feel freer to express negative feelings toward leisure, sex and marriage, while women are free to express negative feelings toward work but tend to repress them toward family roles. ~ Alice S. Rossi
Best Marriage quotes by Alice S. Rossi
You won't finish that stocking tonight," he said, pointing to her stocking. That was what she wanted---the asperity in his voice reproving her. If he says it's wrong to be pessimistic probably it is wrong, she thought; the marriage will turn out all right.
"No," she said, flattening the stocking out upon her knee, "I shan't finish it."
And what then? For she felt that he was still looking at her, but that his look had changed. He wanted something--wanted the thing she always found it so difficult to give him; wanted her to tell him that she loved him. And that, no, she could not do. He found talking so much easier than she did. He could say things--she never could. So naturally it was always he that said the things, and then for some reason he would mind this suddenly, and would reproach her. A heartless woman he called her; she never told him that she loved him. But it was not so--it was not so. It was only that she never could say what she felt. ~ Virginia Woolf
Best Marriage quotes by Virginia Woolf
It is inevitable that being unaware of the purpose for it is inevitable that being unaware of the purpose for your life, you will not be able to recover from being abandoned by your wife or husband ~ Sunday Adelaja
Best Marriage quotes by Sunday Adelaja
Marriage is so much like salvation and our relationship with Christ that Paul says you can't understand marriage without looking at the gospel. ~ Timothy Keller
Best Marriage quotes by Timothy Keller
The days were sunny, the nights were star-studded. Indeed married life was strawberries for breakfast and loving all the time. ~ Marabel Morgan
Best Marriage quotes by Marabel Morgan
When you believe marriage is your answer, you'll often give something that eventually hurts you both. ~ Craig Groeschel
Best Marriage quotes by Craig Groeschel
And that's the thing about marriage. It can look perfect to people from the outside but be utterly imperfect on the inside. The reverse is true as well. No one knows what goes on in a marriage except for the two people living in it. ~ Elin Hilderbrand
Best Marriage quotes by Elin Hilderbrand
A friend recently asked me, 'How's your life?' Without hesitation, I replied, 'She's happy, in love, and doing quite well. ~ A.K. Kuykendall
Best Marriage quotes by A.K. Kuykendall
Love is a great thing ... which alone maketh every burden light.. Love is watchful, and while sleeping, still keeps watch; though fatigued, it is not weary; though pressed, it is not forced. Love is sincere, gentle, strong, patient, faithful, prudent, long-suffering, and manly. Love is humble and upright, not weak, not fickle, nor intent on vain things; sober chaste, steadfast, quiet, and guarded in all the senses. ~ Thomas A Kempis
Best Marriage quotes by Thomas A Kempis
She had stood there with the phone pressed to her ear as though it were a huge plastic seashell, all the unhappy years of her marriage echoing again in her eardrums, washing up in the coils of her memory. ~ Cathie Pelletier
Best Marriage quotes by Cathie Pelletier
At that stage of my youth, death remained as abstract a concept as non-Euclidean geometry or marriage. I didn't yet appreciate its terrible finality or the havoc it could wreak on those who'd entrusted the deceased with their hearts. I was stirred by the dark mystery of mortality. I couldn't resist stealing up to the edge of doom and peering over the brink. The hint of what was concealed in those shadows terrified me, but I caught sight of something in the glimpse, some forbidden and elemental riddle that was no less compelling than the sweet, hidden petals of a woman's sex.
In my case - and, I believe, in the case of Chris McCandless - that was a very different thing from wanting to die. ~ Jon Krakauer
Best Marriage quotes by Jon Krakauer
Love of music, of sunsets and sea; a liking for the same kind of people; political opinions that are not radically divergent; a similar stance as we look at the stars and think of the marvelous strangeness of the universe - these are what build a marriage. And it is never to be taken for granted. ~ Madeleine L'Engle
Best Marriage quotes by Madeleine L'Engle
Women always think in the catastrophic, and when there is a calamity to rectify that might require a unmarried granddaughter, there older women will always act. Their powers of foresight and vigilance might make any disheveled or nubile young haggage ready for the altar in five minutes. ~ Michelle Franklin
Best Marriage quotes by Michelle Franklin
To an honest judge, the alleged marriage between religion and science is a shallow, empty, spin-doctored sham. ~ Richard Dawkins
Best Marriage quotes by Richard Dawkins
They seemed so united that I loved them as one person. Lee wrote of his son and daughter-in-law on his daughter-in-law's death. ~ Robert E.Lee
Best Marriage quotes by Robert E.Lee
We will have a happy marriage if it kills him. ~ Gillian Flynn
Best Marriage quotes by Gillian Flynn
It works much like a marriage, an old marriage. You've got to work on it. ~ Dick Smothers
Best Marriage quotes by Dick Smothers
One of the most interesting accomplishments of the film community, it seems to me, is that it has made real for America the exquisite beauty of incompatibility. Divorce among the gods possesses the sweet, holy sadness that has long been associated with marriage among the mortals. There is something infinitely tender about the inability of an actor to get along with an actress. When it is all over, and the decree is final, the two are even more attentive to each other, are seen oftener together, than ever before. ~ E.B. White
Best Marriage quotes by E.B. White
But in Marriage do thou be wise; prefer the Person before Money; Vertue before Beauty, the Mind before the Body: Then thou hast a Wife, a Friend, a Companion, a Second Self; one that bears an equal Share with thee in all thy Toyls and Troubles. ~ Various
Best Marriage quotes by Various
I am happy to be alone.
Perhaps this is true.
Or perhaps I am the biggest coward of all. ~ Heather Day Gilbert
Best Marriage quotes by Heather Day Gilbert
Don't marry the person you think you can live with; marry only the individual you think you can't live without. ~ James Dobson
Best Marriage quotes by James Dobson
I'm not a big advocate of living together before marriage. It can be the right thing, but it can also leave two people stuck together who haven't figured out what they really want out of the relationship. ~ Emily Yoffe
