She has confided to her Aunt Daisy, for instance, that she can understand the genealogical phenomenon that as burst forth all around her. She finds it moving, she says to see men and women - though, oddly, they mostly women - tramping through cemeteries or else huddled over library tables in the university's records room, turning over the pages of county histories, copying names and dates into small spiral notebooks and imagining, hoping, that their unselfish labors will open up into a fabric of substance and comity. all they want is for their to be revealed as simple, honest, law-abiding folks, quiet in their accomplishments, faithful in their vows, cheerful, solvent, and well intentioned, and that their robustly rounded lives will push up against, and perhaps pardon, the contemporary plagues of displacement and disaffection. ~ Carol Shields
Tungen Women quotes by Carol Shields
Women diet to retain their girlish figures or their boyish husbands. ~ Evan Esar
Tungen Women quotes by Evan Esar
Many women ... have buoyed me up in times of weariness and stress. Each friend was important ... Their words have seasoned my life. Influence, just like salt shaken out, is hard to see, but its flavor is hard to miss. ~ Pam Farrel
Tungen Women quotes by Pam Farrel
Why must women torment me so? ~ Theodore Dreiser
Tungen Women quotes by Theodore Dreiser
Now "The Arabian Nights," some of which, but not nearly all, are given in this volume, are only fairy tales of the East. The people of Asia, Arabia, and Persia told them in their own way, not for children, but for grown-up people. There were no novels then, nor any printed books, of course; but there were people whose profession it was to amuse men and women by telling tales. They dressed the fairy stories up, and made the characters good Mahommedans, living in Bagdad or India. The events were often supposed to happen in the reign of the great Caliph, or ruler of the Faithful, Haroun al Raschid, who lived in Bagdad in 786-808 A.D. The vizir who accompanies the Caliph was also a real person of the great family of the Barmecides. He was put to death by the Caliph in a very cruel way, nobody ever knew why. The stories must have been told in their present shape a good long while after the Caliph died, when nobody knew very exactly what had really happened. At last some storyteller thought of writing down the tales, and fixing them into a kind of framework, as if they had all been narrated to a cruel Sultan by his wife. Probably the tales were written down about the time when Edward I. was fighting Robert Bruce. But changes were made in them at different times, and a great deal that is very dull and stupid was put in, and plenty of verses. Neither the verses nor the dull pieces are given in this book. ~ Muhsin Mahdi
Tungen Women quotes by Muhsin Mahdi
Are you a stripper?" I ask. "Because you're wearing way too much clothing for a stripper." "And you're not wearing enough," she says, her voice icy. "Well, it would be a shame to hide my best feature," I say, giving her my cocky grin. Women totally dig the grin. It gets me into – and out of – so much trouble. But this girl doesn't. She wrinkles her nose and looks at me like she just tasted something bad. "I'm sorry," she says. "About what?" "I'm sorry that's your best feature," she says, nodding pointedly downward at my cock. "How disappointing. ~ Sabrina Paige
Tungen Women quotes by Sabrina Paige
Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate. It privileges, inter alia, the interests of boys and men over the bodily integrity, autonomy, and dignity of girls and women. It is subtle, insidious, and never more dangerous than when women passionately deny that they themselves are engaging in it. ~ Ashley Judd
Tungen Women quotes by Ashley Judd
I just think some books are instructions on why women are dirt or hardly exist at all except as accessories or are inherently evil and empty. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Tungen Women quotes by Rebecca Solnit
Women in most countries have not achieved much, because they can't be liberated under the patriarchal, capitalist, imperialist and military system that determines the way we live now, and which is governed by power, not justice, by false democracy, not real freedom. ~ Nawal El Saadawi
Tungen Women quotes by Nawal El Saadawi
The men in the nearby village fear us, thinking we are witches. Women who live without men - especially old women who grow herbs, heal the sick, and befriend wild animals - are always suspect. ~ Pat Murphy
Tungen Women quotes by Pat Murphy
The paradox of American democracy has been that its slogan of equal opportunity has meant, often, equal opportunity to get power over your fellows. ~ Mary Parker Follett
Tungen Women quotes by Mary Parker Follett
The real issue has nothing to do with whether women wear makeup or don't, gain weight or lose it, have surgery or shun it, dress up or down, make our clothing and faces and bodies into works of art or ignore adornment altogether. The real problem is our lack of choice. ~ Naomi Wolf
Tungen Women quotes by Naomi Wolf
She had never been to college, and I often wondered where her life would have led under different circumstances. She might have been a physician or an attorney, a CEO or a professor. Instead, she was stuck in Silvington, Indiana, married to a construction worker, and trying anything she could think of to save her child. ~ T.J. Forrester
Tungen Women quotes by T.J. Forrester
I think I am at my best when my hair is short. It's easier to take care of and more of who I am. Women are conditioned to think we need long hair. ~ Halle Berry
Tungen Women quotes by Halle Berry
He regarded her indignantly. "Did she say I broke our engagement?"

"She didn't say hardly anything when I talked to her this morning, just that the two of you reached a mutual decision to end your relationship."

"And you assumed that meant I ended it."

"Didn't you?"

"Hell, no."

"Are you saying Gracie dumped you?"

He saw too late the trap he'd laid for himself.

"'Course not. Nobody dumps me."

"She did, didn't she? She dumped you! Holy Moses! A person of the female species finally gave Bobby Tom Denton back a little bit of what he's been giving out." Grinning widely, she lifted her face to the heavens. "Thank you, Jesus!"

"Will you stop that! She didn't dump me. Haven't you figured out by now that we were never really engaged! It was just a ploy to keep everybody off my back while I was in town." The fact that Terry Jo was making a joke out of this hurt in a way he couldn't express.

"Of course you were engaged. A blind fool could see the two of you love each other."

"We do not! Well, maybe she loves me, but…I care about her. Who wouldn't? She's about the best kind of woman there is. But, love? She's not my type, Terry Jo."

Terry Jo gave him a long, steady gaze. "It's amazing. You don't know any more about women now than you did in high school when you threw me over for Sherri Hopper." She regarded him sadly. "When are you going to grow up, Bobby To ~ Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Tungen Women quotes by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Whatever good I have accomplished as an actress I believe came in direct proportion to my efforts to portray black women who have made positive contributions to my heritage. ~ Cicely Tyson
Tungen Women quotes by Cicely Tyson
No one ever talked about such bonds before the rise of industrialization, when wage labor first became an option for women. Note that the bonding story got revved up again in the early 1970s, as women were moving into the labor market (screwing up traditional conceptions about the natural female role), ~ Meghan Daum
Tungen Women quotes by Meghan Daum
I despise women who rely on men entirely for their own existence. ~ Lindsey Davis
Tungen Women quotes by Lindsey Davis
Support other women! We are taught to be competitive with other women, to vie with them for the 'girl spot' in a group or job. Anything that helps an individual woman is good for all of us! Love and support your friends! ~ Megan Amram
Tungen Women quotes by Megan Amram
We have to pray as the ancients prayed. We are women now, not children, and are expected to pray with maturity. The words most often used to describe urgent, prayerful labor are wrestle, plead, cry, and hunger...In some sense, prayer may be the hardest work we will ever be engaged in, and perhaps it should be. ~ Patricia T. Holland
Tungen Women quotes by Patricia T. Holland
How many times had she heard women in New York - maybe women everywhere, for all she knew - speak lyrically of how they wouldn't see friends for months, perhaps even years, and then it was as though they had never been apart. "Picked up where we left off" was the common phrase. It was supposed to signal some magical communion, but if you looked it right in the eye, it came down to this: the kinds of people they considered friends they might not even actually see for a long long time. ~ Anna Quindlen
Tungen Women quotes by Anna Quindlen
I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than our bodies. ~ Chloe Grace Moretz
Tungen Women quotes by Chloe Grace Moretz
I want women to feel like we are not in competition with each other. We are on
the same team. Something as small as a compliment to let another woman know she is on the right path or she is doing a great job can make all the difference. We can defend each other when we are being attacked or judged. We can hire other women and refer each other for jobs when the opportunity fits ~ Scarlett Curtis
Tungen Women quotes by Scarlett Curtis
A woman has all too much substance in a man's eyes at the best of times. That is why men like women to be slim. Her lack of flesh negates her. The less of her there is, the less notice he need take of her. The more like a male she appears to be, the safer he feels. ~ Fay Weldon
Tungen Women quotes by Fay Weldon
I'm really worried about what the world is going to be like when my daughters are young women, [when] they are young leaders or mothers or businesspeople - whatever they're going to be. I'm afraid they're going to have a less healthy and less biologically rich planet. ~ Jeff Corwin
Tungen Women quotes by Jeff Corwin
Men of intellect did not, as a rule, bring home stray women who insisted on flinging themselves on horses. ~ Katie MacAlister
Tungen Women quotes by Katie MacAlister
I've known for ages that men and women are animals by nature, I've also known that we have a sacred duty to make something different of ourselves, and I still believe that we have the strength and the chance to be more than we are. Through ourselves? Despite ourselves? Doesn't matter, I still believe… ~ Irmgard Keun
Tungen Women quotes by Irmgard Keun
The woman is so hard Upon the woman. ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson
Tungen Women quotes by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Ava Gardner was the most beautiful woman in the world, and it's wonderful that she didn't cut up her face. She addressed aging by picking up her chin and receiving the light in a better way. And she looked like a woman. She never tried to look like a girl. ~ Sharon Stone
Tungen Women quotes by Sharon Stone
Female empowerment really is important to me. I'm a big nerd of the books from the 15th Century and 16th Century, when the men had all the power and the women had none of it. ~ Ariel Winter
Tungen Women quotes by Ariel Winter
He was a soldier. He was a shepherd. He was a beggar, and a king. He was a farmer, gleeman, sailor, carpenter. He was born, lived, and died Aiel. He died mad, he died rotting, he died of sickness, accident, age. He was executed, and multitudes cheered his death. He proclaimed himself the Dragon Reborn and flung his banner across the sky; he ran from the Power and hid; he lived and died never knowing. He held off the madness and the sickness for years; he succumbed between two winters. Sometimes Moiraine came and took him away from the Two Rivers, alone or with those of his friends who had survived Winternight; sometimes she did not. Sometimes other Aes Sedai came for him. Sometimes Red Ajah. Egwene married him; Egwene, stern-faced in stole of Amyrlin Seat, led Aes Sedai who gentled him; Egwene, with tears in her eyes, plunged a dagger into his heart, and he thanked her as he died. He loved other women, married other women. Elayne, and Min, and a fair-haired farmer's daughter met on the road to Caemlyn, and women he had never seen before he lived those lives. A hundred lives. More. So many he could not count them. And at the end of every life, as he lay dying, as he drew his final breath, a voice whispered in his ear. I have won again, Lews Therin. Flicker. ~ Robert Jordan
Tungen Women quotes by Robert Jordan
We want more men and women who walk with God and before God, like Enoch and Abraham. ~ J.C. Ryle
Tungen Women quotes by J.C. Ryle
Valys also didn't think I was good enough for him. He made that clear every time he acted like a martyr forced to settle. But what he didn't understand was that if he thought I might not be good enough for him, he definitely wasn't good enough for me. I was well aware of my flaws, but I knew my merits, too; I shouldn't have to be anyone's second-best. Least of all, his. ~ Nenia Campbell
Tungen Women quotes by Nenia Campbell
This entailed switching around by hand ENIAC's rat's nest of cables and resetting its switches. At first the programming seemed to be a routine, perhaps even menial task, which may have been why it was relegated to women, who back then were not encouraged to become engineers. But what the women of ENIAC soon showed, and the men later came to understand, was that the programming of a computer could be just as significant as the design of its hardware. ~ Walter Isaacson
Tungen Women quotes by Walter Isaacson
A woman writer, except in rare instances, has no protection such as enjoyed by men who use their wives and mistresses as a marline to save themselves from the wear and tear of interruption. ~ Miles Franklin
Tungen Women quotes by Miles Franklin
A woman needs to combine niceness with insistence, a style that Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, calls relentlessly pleasant ~ Sheryl Sandberg
Tungen Women quotes by Sheryl Sandberg
Conservatism is affecting the way women perceive who they are in the world. ~ Cate Blanchett
Tungen Women quotes by Cate Blanchett
Think of it in terms of men's and women's cultures: women live in male systems, know male rules, speak male language when around men, etc. But what do men really know about women? Only screwed up myths concocted to perpetuate the power imbalance. It is the same situation when it comes to dominant and non-dominant or colonizing and colonized cultures/ countries/ people. As a bilingual/bicultural woman whose native culture is not American, I live in an American system, abide by American rules of conduct, speak English when around English speakers, etc., only to be confronted with utter ignorance or concocted myths and stereotypes about my own culture.

-- Judit Moschkovich - "--But I Know You, American Woman ~ Cherrie L Moraga
Tungen Women quotes by Cherrie L Moraga
The real trouble about women is that they must always go on trying to adapt themselves to men's theories of women, as they alwayshave done. When a woman is thoroughly herself, she is being what her type of man wants her to be. When a woman is hysterical it's because she doesn't quite know what to be, which pattern to follow, which man's picture of woman to live up to. ~ D.H. Lawrence
Tungen Women quotes by D.H. Lawrence
For mad I may be, but I will never be convenient. ~ Jennifer Donnelly
Tungen Women quotes by Jennifer Donnelly
Pre-forty, you can wash your face with Tide and use Vaseline for moisturizer, toss on a little mascara and lip gloss, and you're a friggin' cover girl. Those of us on the slippery slope that is the Other Side of Forty can testify
those days are so over. You pore over labels promising everything short of actual rebirth
you will buy most of them for an average of $450 per quarter once
and none of them will work. You will still be getting older and poorer with every passing purchase. ~ Jill Conner Browne
Tungen Women quotes by Jill Conner Browne
A woman who thinks she is intelligent demands the same rights as man. An intelligent woman gives up. ~ Sidonie Gabrielle Colette
Tungen Women quotes by Sidonie Gabrielle Colette
It used to be that you had to make female TV characters perfect so no one would be offended by your 'portrayal' of women. Even when I started out on 'The Office' eight years ago, we could write our male characters funny and flawed, but not the women. And now, thankfully, it's completely different. ~ Mindy Kaling
