We were sun children chasing an eternal summer. Fall was a four-letter word. ~ John Glynn
Out East quotes by John Glynn
All of Rommel's supplies and reinforcements come across those very straits from Italy, and land at Tunis or Bizerta. From there, Rommel can strike out east towards Egypt or west ~ Neal Stephenson
Out East quotes by Neal Stephenson
I have played in the West for 14 years. I played against Dustin Byfuglien a lot. So it's not like I've been out East for my whole career and never played against the guy. That may have been blown out of proportion, I think. ~ Chris Pronger
Out East quotes by Chris Pronger
It's clear that if we use the mind attentively, mental power is increased, and if we concentrate the mind in the moment, it is easier to coordinate mind and body. But in terms of mind and body unity, is there something we can concentrate on that will reliably aid us in discovering this state of coordination?

In Japan, and to some degree other Asian countries, people have historically focused mental strength in the hara (abdomen) as a way of realizing their full potential. Japan has traditionally viewed the hara as the vital center of humanity in a manner not dissimilar to the Western view of the heart or brain. I once read that years ago Japanese children were asked to point to the origin of thoughts and feelings. They inevitably pointed toward the abdominal region. When the same question was asked of American children, most pointed at their heads or hearts. Likewise, Japan and the West have commonly held differing views of what is physical power or physical health, with Japan emphasizing the strength of the waist and lower body and Western people admiring upper body power. (Consider the ideal of the sumo wrestler versus the V-shaped Western bodybuilder with a narrow waist and broad shoulders.)

However, East and West also hold similar viewpoints regarding the hara, and we're perhaps not as dissimilar as some might imagine. For instance, hara ga nai hito describes a cowardly person, "a person with no hara." Sounds similar to our saying that so-and-so "ha ~ H.E. Davey
Out East quotes by H.E. Davey
I've been gratified to see over the twenty or so years of my writing life the West become less of a colony of the East; maybe new technologies and too much travel undermine the idea of provinciality. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Out East quotes by Rebecca Solnit
In 1989, roughly one in fifty East Germans between the ages of eighteen and eighty worked for the Stasi in some capacity. ~ Julia Angwin
Out East quotes by Julia Angwin
Janitorial"

All morning he drifts the spacious lawns
like a gleaner, picking up this and that,
the summer clouds immense and building
toward afternoon, when the heat drives him
under the shade of the oak trees in the quad
and then along cool corridors inside
to pull down last term's flyers

For the chamber recital, the poetry reading,
the lecture on the ethics of cloning,
the dinner with some ambassador,
the debate between Kant and Heidegger,
the frat party, the sorority party, the kegger,
the weekend Bergman festival, the Wednesday
screening of Dumb and Dumber. He says
hello to fine young ladies, and tries
not to dwell on their halter tops,
their tanned thighs, shorts up to here.

At five he climbs into an old, dumpster-colored
olds, lights up and heads home
across the barge-ridden river in its servitude
to East St. Louis, where you know
this poem - glib, well-meaning, trivial--
grows tongue-tied, and cannot follow. ~ George Bilgere
Out East quotes by George Bilgere
Down the dirty old street
The Angel of the East is calling
And with a trembling hand
I open up a can
I can hear a baby bawling ~ Shane MacGowan
Out East quotes by Shane MacGowan
Oh, it's essential. I mean, you have to - if I'm writing about the Middle East, I have to go there, and if possible, stay long enough to get a real feeling for what's going on. ~ Joe Sacco
Out East quotes by Joe Sacco
At the end of the day, bin Laden's interest is not Washington and New York, it's the Middle East. He wants Saudi Arabia. He wants to get rid of the House of Saud. ~ Robert Fisk
Out East quotes by Robert Fisk
I have roles in plays that I hope that I'll be able to do one day. I might be doing them at, like, the East Wilton Playhouse in wherever. But I think that Edie Falco ... to get something even resembling her type of roles, that would be amazing. ~ Mamie Gummer
Out East quotes by Mamie Gummer
There is no Archimedean point from which to judge, since the psyche is indistinguishable from its manifestations. The psyche is the object of psychology, and -fatally enough- also its subject. There is no getting away from this fact.
"Psychology and Religion" (1938). In CW 11: Psychology and Religion: West and East. P.8 ~ C. G. Jung
Out East quotes by C. G. Jung
China is thus following a path similar to that set by the United States after World War II, when it gave unstinting support to undemocratic governments in the Middle East on the promise of long-term access to low-priced oil-though without the huge arms transfers that accompanied, and remain a key component of, US political support. ~ Melvin Gurtov
Out East quotes by Melvin Gurtov
If God did not exist it would be necessary to invent Him. But all nature cries aloud that He does exist.
(Voltaire) ~ Elizabeth Kales
Out East quotes by Elizabeth Kales
In addition, each barrel of oil we save through conservation further decreases our dangerous reliance on unstable Middle East oil. ~ Paul Gillmor
Out East quotes by Paul Gillmor
I did have an occasion in 1951 to have two days of observation of many flights of them, they were of different sizes, flying in fighter formation, generally from east to west over Europe. ~ Gordon Cooper
Out East quotes by Gordon Cooper
The administration often used the analogy of planting the "seeds of democracy" in the Middle East, as if they'd sprout into democratic regimes as nature took its course. Democracy doesn't sprout like apple trees. Scattering the seeds isn't enough, no matter how many soldiers do it. To continue with the gardening analogy the Bush administration seemed to love (there were also many "seeds of terror" and "seeds of hope"), democracy is more like a fragile flower that requires constant attention and the right soil. Dictatorships and fascist regimes are hardy weeds that sprout on their own. ~ Richard Engel
Out East quotes by Richard Engel
So are all the kids on the East Coast repeating school next year? Get ready to see a lot of hairy eighth graders. Storm brain drain. ~ Olivia Wilde
Out East quotes by Olivia Wilde
I don't have to come back, because I am still here! And I'm not an '80s thing. I already worked with my first band back in East Germany and that was soooo '70s, young man. I'm a '70s thing. If I'm a thing at all ... and an exciting thing. ~ Nina Hagen
Out East quotes by Nina Hagen
The civilized East is immeasurably in advance of any savage tribes; the Greeks and Romans have improved upon the East; the Christian nations have been stricter in their views of the marriage relation than any of the ancients. ~ Plato
Out East quotes by Plato
He didn't look back but he knew his wife and his brother's wife, all the women of the house, would be flying, as if into battle, to make East Slope as ready as it could ever be for what had arrived. ~ Guy Gavriel Kay
Out East quotes by Guy Gavriel Kay
In places like Germany or France the idea of black-white is not so much black-white but "our people and them," and "them" can be people from the near east like Turks or Muslims or North Africans, all of whom might well be considered white in the United States. ~ Nell Irvin Painter
Out East quotes by Nell Irvin Painter
There were initiatives I have remained involved with in the U.S. and in the Middle East, like the Peace Corps, which might be summed up as, "Ask not that the world serve you, but ask what you can do to serve the world." ~ Queen Noor Of Jordan
Out East quotes by Queen Noor Of Jordan
We love playing together and we love adversity. You know, back-to-back, the two best teams in the East. ~ Steve Nash
Out East quotes by Steve Nash
One of the great gifts of the Enlightenment is that we can form communities without necessaily agreeing on ultimate metaphysical grounds. We know that to a great extent that the principles of social coordination are manmade, we recognise the right of the other to exist. This is something that distinguishes our part of the world from the middle East. ~ Roger Scruton
Out East quotes by Roger Scruton
One minute you could be getting a smoke in the alley on the Lower East Side with your friends, having drinks and dancing on tables in a popular nightclub. And the next minute, you could be dead. ~ Melissa De La Cruz
Out East quotes by Melissa De La Cruz
Some of the vamps formed into smaller groups, to chat or plot or whatever vamps did at undead nonfunerals. Oddly, they talked about the stock market and the latest flare-up in the Middle East, like any well-educated group of humans. It was almost as disorienting as hearing them quote Jesus. Then, ~ Faith Hunter
Out East quotes by Faith Hunter
This book explores an unrecognized but mighty taboo - our tacit conspiracy to ignore who, or what, we really are. Briefly, the thesis is that the prevalent sensation of oneself as a separate ego enclosed in a bag of skin is a hallucination which accords neither with Western science nor with the experimental philosophy-religions of the East - in particular the central and germinal Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. This hallucination underlies the misuse of technology for the violent subjugation of man's natural environment and, consequently, its eventual destruction. ~ Alan W. Watts
Out East quotes by Alan W. Watts
I'd been brought up on the Upper East Side in a WASP society, which was death on crutches. ~ Harry Mathews
Out East quotes by Harry Mathews
Anyone who follows the Middle East and Islamic world in general can't deny it is often a very violent place, that a band of instability now stretches from Algeria to Pakistan. ~ Richard Engel
Out East quotes by Richard Engel
The calm skies that drifted above us lulled us into thinking this traversée would be smooth, but after several hours, the unsteady sea had taken its toll on me and after a light lunch and a brief swim in the open sea failed to do so, I attempted to remedy my mal de mer with rest. When I awoke, the sun had already set and the cool air and soft light of twilight helped recalibrate my disoriented thoughts. Although my seasickness had subsided, I lay starboard side facing the heavens - that were now a deep shade of purple - so as to not provoke another episode. We set to anchoring behind several large volcanic pillars just a stone's-throw away from where the Tyrrhenian Sea kissed the east of the island. A handful of wishes scattered the skies as we approached the shores of Aci Trezza. As these stars traced their dying song across the void above, part of me felt ashamed for even entertaining the notion of wishing upon a star, but that voice was speedily silenced by words He had once shared with me in Scotland: "There is always some truth to fiction. ~ R.J. Arkhipov
Out East quotes by R.J. Arkhipov
I've been hyper-conscious about staying away from rubbish. I don't eat white bread, white rice or cereal unless it's porridge. ~ Fleur East
Out East quotes by Fleur East
The eternal opposites meet and kiss. The wolf and the lamb lie down together, the dove and the serpent share one nest. The stars bend down and touch the earth and the young and the old forgive each other. Night and day meet here, so do the poles. The East leans over towards the West and the circle is complete. ~ P.L. Travers
Out East quotes by P.L. Travers
As long as we're dependent on those fossil fuels, we're dependent on the Middle East. If we are not victims, we're certainly captives. ~ John M. McHugh
Out East quotes by John M. McHugh
I am the East. I have philosophies, I have religions, who would exchange them for airplanes? ~ Ameen Rihani
Out East quotes by Ameen Rihani
He boils milk with fresh ginger, a quarter of a vanilla bean, and tea that is so dark and fine-leaved that it looks like black dust. He strains it and puts cane sugar in both our cups. There's something euphorically invigorating and yet filling about it. It tastes the way I imagine the Far East must taste. ~ Peter Hoeg
Out East quotes by Peter Hoeg
Christians have ... identified their opponents, whether Jews, pagans, or heretics, with forces of evil, and so with Satan ... Nor have things improved since. The blood-soaked history of persecution, torture, murder, and destruction perpetrated in the name of religion is difficult to grasp, let alohne summarize, from the slaughter of Christians to the Crusades to the Inquisitiion to the Reformation to the European witchcraze to colonialization to today's bitter coflict in the Middle East. ~ Elaine Pagels
Out East quotes by Elaine Pagels
I went to my room and packed a change of clothes, got my banjo, and started walking down the road. Soon I found myself on the open highway headed east. ~ Burl Ives
Out East quotes by Burl Ives
You have to look at the history of the Middle East in particular. It has been one of failure and frustration, of feudalism and tribalism. ~ Alexander Haig
