Life, I now realize, is just one big trek across a minefield and you never know which step is going to blow you up. ~ Holly Goldberg Sloan
Minefield quotes by Holly Goldberg Sloan
Just being nice is not a winning strategy. Nice sends a message that the woman is willing to sacrifice pay to be liked by others. This is why a woman needs to combine niceness with insistence, a style that Mary sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, calls "relentlessly pleasant." This method requires smiling frequently, expressing appreciation and concern, invoking common interests, emphasizing larger goals, and approaching the negotiation as solving a problem as opposed to taking a critical stance. Most negotiations involve drawn-out, successive moves, so women need to stay focused... and smile.

No wonder women don't negotiate as much as men. It's like trying to cross a minefield backward in high heels. So what should we do? Should we play by the rules that others created? Should we figure out a way to put on a friendly expression while not being too nice, displaying the right levels of loyalty and using "we" language? I understand the paradox of advising women to change the world by adhering to biased rules and expectations. I know it is not a perfect answer but a means to a desirable end. It is also true, as any good negotiator knows, that having a better understanding of the other side leads to a superior outcome. So at the very least, women can enter these negotiations with the knowledge that showing concern for the common good, even as they negotiate for themselves, will strengthen their position. ~ Sheryl Sandberg
Minefield quotes by Sheryl Sandberg
The goalie is like the guy on the minefield. He discovers the mines and destroys them. If you make a mistake, somebody gets blown up. ~ Arturs Irbe
Minefield quotes by Arturs Irbe
Some would assert that Providence was at work shaking out its pockets in Humanity's lap. Other would argue for that mindless choreographer, Chance. Either way it was a simple thing: a lost diary fell into the hands of a soul-sick war hero on a train from Bombay to Jaipur just when he'd grown tired of the scenery and needed something to keep his thoughts from the minefield of his wretched thoughts.
In such mild ways is the groundwork laid for first kisses and ruined lives. ~ Laini Taylor
Minefield quotes by Laini Taylor
RBG's most famous words in the Hobby Lobby dissent could have appeared in any of her searing dissents: "The court, I fear, has ventured into a minefield. ~ Irin Carmon
Minefield quotes by Irin Carmon
I know that family life in America is a minefield, an economic trap for women, a study in disappointment for both sexes. ~ Anne Roiphe
Minefield quotes by Anne Roiphe
If we come to a minefield, our infantry attacks exactly as it were not there. ~ Georgy Zhukov
Minefield quotes by Georgy Zhukov
In Angola, I visited 'HeroRats' that have been trained to sniff out land mines (and, in some countries, diagnose tuberculosis). In a day, they can clear 20 times as much of a minefield as a human, and they work for bananas! ~ Nicholas Kristof
Minefield quotes by Nicholas Kristof
We talk about your drinking
But not about your thirst
You set off through the minefield
Like you were rounding first ~ Rosanne Cash
Minefield quotes by Rosanne Cash
When a group of people are forced to navigate a minefield together, everyone feels a grudging sense of comfort when someone else gets blown up. Though there may be other unseen landmines left in the ground, each death creates a safe spot. A landmine cannot explode twice in the same place. Sure, the explosion robs the survivors of a comrade. Still, each death makes everyone's next step marginally safer. So everyone keeps walking with grief on their faces, and relief in their hearts. Their own deaths are further postponed by the end of another life. ~ Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
Minefield quotes by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
Prudence is not the same thing as caution. Caution is a helpful strategy when you're crossing a minefield; it's a disaster when you're in a gold rush. ~ John Ortberg
Minefield quotes by John Ortberg
Do you live in a mine field or a garden? When we live in a minefield mentality, we explode with the weeds of worry, doubt, fear, lack and limitation. Choose to cultivate your inner garden! ~ Michael Beckwith
Minefield quotes by Michael Beckwith
Trusting others puts us at risk. Yet failure to trust entails risk as well. The ability to navigate through this minefield successfully is one of life's most valuable assets. DeSteno provides by far the best account of what science has learned about how we do this. The Truth About Trust is also a terrific read. ~ Robert H. Frank
Minefield quotes by Robert H. Frank
Parliament/Congress.
less entertaining than paint drying, but more dangerous than any minefield is. ~ Steve Merrick
Minefield quotes by Steve Merrick
The past was a minefield about which few maps seemed to agree. And why should that surprise me? It's a big place.
p. 30 ~ Danilo Kis
Minefield quotes by Danilo Kis
One benefit to being late: eating on the run meant Jonah didn't have to do any agonizing over cafeteria seating. He just grabbed a bagel toasted to go and bustled right past the social minefield of half-empty tables and bacon-and-egg small talk. ~ Heidi Belleau
Minefield quotes by Heidi Belleau
Marriage is a freaking minefield. ~ J.D. Robb
Minefield quotes by J.D. Robb
Coming of queer age in the 1990s, to love queers was to love damage. To love damage was a path to loving yourself. ...Queers do not come out of the minefield of homophobia without scars. We do not live through out families' rejection of us, our stunted life options, the violence we've faced, the ways in which we've violated ourselves for survival, our harmful coping mechanisms, our lifesaving delusions, the altered brain chemistry we have sustained as a result of this, the low income and survival states we've endured as a result of society's loathing, unharmed. Whatever of theses wounds I didn't experience firsthand, my lovers did, and so I say that, for a time, it was not possible to have queer love that was not ins some way damaged or defined by damage sustained, even as it desperately fought through that damage to access, hopefully, increasingly frequent moments of sustaining, lifesaving love, true love, and loyalty, and electric sex. ~ Michelle Tea
Minefield quotes by Michelle Tea
A totalitarian system leaves behind it a minefield built into both the country's social structure and the individual psychology of its citizens. And mines explode each time the system faces the danger of being dismantled and the country sees the prospect of genuine renewal. ~ Anatoly Sobchak
Minefield quotes by Anatoly Sobchak
Being a working person who works for the studios. It's a minefield and there's tons of stuff you need to know. And people mess it up all the time. ~ Thomas Lennon
Minefield quotes by Thomas Lennon
I think my head's a minefield strewn with triggers, and maybe if I survive each explosion, what emerges from the wreckage will be me, really, truly me. ~ Ann Aguirre
Minefield quotes by Ann Aguirre
It's a philosophical minefield!
Cabal had a brief mental image of Aristotle walking halfway across an open field before unexpectedly disappearing in a fireball. Descartes and Nietzsche looked on appalled. He pulled himself together. ~ Jonathan L. Howard
Minefield quotes by Jonathan L. Howard
I'm ashamed to reveal that, even as a teanager, I was guilty of participanting in the mummy wars and jusging another woman for her mothering preferences. It seems that the stay-at-home mothers are still being accused of being anti-feminist and poor role models to their daughters, whereas working mothers have been accused of everything from child abuse to being selfish feminists and inflating house prices. Women are pinched against other women, and no matter where you stand in this minefield, you can't help but notice that men seem to escape the guilt and the blame. ~ Kasey Edwards
Minefield quotes by Kasey Edwards
Anyone who doubts the subjective flexibility of time should spend an afternoon walking through a minefield. ~ Gregory H. Murry
Minefield quotes by Gregory H. Murry
An interview is like a minefield. ~ Michelle Williams
Minefield quotes by Michelle Williams
So long as we continued to attach more importance to our own narrow group membership than to the 'global village' we would propagate prejudice and ignorance. There was absolutely no harm in being part of a small group - indeed, with our hunter-gatherer band mentality it gave comfort, provided us with an inner circle of friends who could be utterly trusted, who were absolutely reliable. It helped give us peace of mind. The danger came only from drawing that sharp line, digging that ditch, laying that minefield, between our own group and any other group that thought differently. ~ Jane Goodall
Minefield quotes by Jane Goodall
Ironically, parenting is a shame and judgment minefield precisely because most of us are wading through uncertainty and self-doubt when it comes to raising our children. ~ Brene Brown
Minefield quotes by Brene Brown
It's easy to think the minefield wasn't that bad once you're safely watching other people get blown up. ~ Liane Moriarty
Minefield quotes by Liane Moriarty
Without being good enough, I started figuring out how to make my way through the minefield of a script, which is the rest is semi-history. ~ Kurt Fuller
Minefield quotes by Kurt Fuller
Evolution was a random walk across a minefield, not a pre-ordained trajectory, onward and upward toward perfection. ~ Greg Egan
Minefield quotes by Greg Egan
To be a veiled Muslim woman on screen is a very scary minefield for me. ~ Yasmine Al Masri
Minefield quotes by Yasmine Al Masri
Of course, to publish something, you have to write it, polish it, then hire out the line editing, copy editing and cover design. After which, you pick your way through the minefield of conforming to the differing requirements of Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords, or hire someone to do it for you. ~ Ruth Glick
Minefield quotes by Ruth Glick
Life is one big minefield, and the only place that isn't a minefield is the place they make the mines. ~ Michael O'Donoghue
Minefield quotes by Michael O'Donoghue
As they say: A baking man will grasp at a hangman. Whoever gets the job will be dragged into the heat, forced to wear a massive pair of iron shoes, and frogmarched across the minefield at gunpoint. ~ Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
Minefield quotes by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko
Conversation is a minefield until you learn the conventions, Jane dear.'
'I'll never learn all the rules,' muttered Jane.
'Yes, you will,' said Phryne. 'Then you can bend them. The best advice I would give you is, "If under attack, cause a diversion".'
'A diversion?'
'Yes, trip over the dog, spill a glass of wine on your attacker, burst into song, challenge your attacker to a duel. And the angrier you get, the lower your voice should be. Never shout unless you are shouting "Fire! ~ Kerry Greenwood
Minefield quotes by Kerry Greenwood
It may not seem fair or right. Shouldn't doing an exceptional job be enough? Unfortunately it's not. The hard truth is that you must learn to do a great job AND navigate the complex human dynamics. Like dancing a beautiful ballet in a minefield. If you ignore the land mines, or do nothing but complain about them, you're likely to lose a few toes. ~ Dan Rust
Minefield quotes by Dan Rust
I needed to say something. Something romantic! Something to sweep her off her feet.
"You're like a potato!" I shouted after her. "In a minefield."
She froze in place. Then she spun on me, her face lit by a half-grown fruit. "A potato," she said flatly. "That's the best you can do? Seriously?"
"It makes sense," I said. "Listen. You're strolling through a minefield, worried about getting blown up. And then you step on something, and you think, 'I'm dead.' But it's just a potato. And you're so relieved to find something so wonderful when you expected something so awful. That's what you are. To me."
"A potato."
"Sure. French fries? Mashed potatoes? Who doesn't like potatoes?"
"Plenty of people. Why can't I be something sweet, like a cake?"
"Because cake wouldn't grow in a minefield. Obviously."
She stared down the hallway at me for a few moments, then sat on an overgrown set of roots.
Sparks. She seemed to be crying. Idiot! I thought at myself, scrambling through the foliage. Romantic. You were supposed to be romantic, you slontze! Potatoes weren't romantic. I should have gone with a carrot. ~ Brandon Sanderson
Minefield quotes by Brandon Sanderson
With all the precautions and risks that accompany sex today, it sounds about as much fun as walking through a minefield. ~ Erma Bombeck
Minefield quotes by Erma Bombeck
Sex is good, especially when you love someone."
That was another potential minefield, but Hans took a tentative step. "It's very good for me, sabakee."
Boris looked into his eyes for a long time, and Hans saw the light gradually dawn, as he realized what Hans meant. He stroked Hans's cheek and smiled affectionately. "I should not say this, but… it is very good for me too, puppy ~ Jamie Fessenden
Minefield quotes by Jamie Fessenden
Witnessing and appreciating spectacular God creation trigger the calm and peaceful switch of ours. Witnessing the fisherman's life early in the morning make mE think ABOUT THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IS ACTUALLY TO FIND A PURPOSE, AND REMIND ME ABOUT IN THE MINEFIELD OF LIFE I MUST BE PREPARED TO LOOSE BOTH FEET (Ejump, 2018) ~ Ejump, 2018
Minefield quotes by Ejump, 2018
No wonder women don't negotiate as often as men. It's like trying to cross a minefield backward in high heels. ~ Sheryl Sandberg
Minefield quotes by Sheryl Sandberg
Political correctness is a minefield ~ Marian Keyes
Minefield quotes by Marian Keyes
I raised that kid like I was running an egg-and-spoon race through a minefield, and he was the egg. ~ Jonathan Lethem
Minefield quotes by Jonathan Lethem
The subconscious is a minefield of unwanted rote thoughts. ~ Steven Redhead
Minefield quotes by Steven Redhead
It's important to have as much fun as possible while we're here. It balances out the times when the minefield of life explodes. ~ Jimmy Buffett
Minefield quotes by Jimmy Buffett
He really is a first-class waste of space, isn't he ?"
"Thank you" I said. It's nice when the people you love share your opinions.
"You're welcome," Dad said. "And the cartwheels would seem to imply that the new model's a good thing ?"
I looked at him with something close to shock. My father and I have a very satisfactory system in place, based on the unspoken agreement that I won't tell him about my love life and he won't ask. All that sort of carry-on is Mum's department, and she advises Dad on a need-to-know basis. "Um, yes," I said.
"Very good," said Dad and, clearly appalled at having strayed so far into this emotional minefield, he began to brush his teeth with most unnecessary vigour. ~ Danielle Hawkins
