Modeling the evolution of modularity became significantly easier after a kind of genetic variation was discovered by quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping in the lab of James Cheverud at Washington University called 'relationship QTL' or r-QTL for short. An r-QTL is a genetic locus that affects the correlations between two quantitative traits (i.e. their variational relationship, and therefore, 'relationship' loci). Surprisingly, a large fraction of these so-mapped loci are also neutral with respect to the character mean. This means one can select on these 'neutral' r-QTLs without simultaneously changing the character mean in a certain way.
It was easy to show that differential directional selection on a character could easily lead a decrease in genetic correlation between characters. Of course, it is not guaranteed that each and every population has the right kind of r-QTL polymorphisms, nor is it yet clear what kind of genetic architecture allows for the existence of an r-QTL.
Nevertheless, these findings make it plausible that differential directional selection can enhance the genetic/variational individuality of traits and, thus, may play a role in the origin of evolutionary novelties by selecting for variational individuality.
It must be added, though, that there has been relatively little research in this area and that we will need to see more to determine whether we understand what is going on here, if anything. In particular, one difficulty is the math ~ Günter Wagner
Lennis Washington quotes by Günter Wagner
For many Native Americans across the land, the name of the Washington football team is a deeply personal reminder of a legacy of racism and generations of pain. ~ Dan Maffei
Lennis Washington quotes by Dan Maffei
There was not a member of the Constitutional Convention who had the least objection to what is contended for by the advocates for a Bill of Rights and trial by jury. ~ George Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by George Washington
Much indeed to be regretted, party disputes are now carried to such a length, and truth is so enveloped in mist and false representation, that it is extremely difficult to know through what channel to seek it. This difficulty to one, who is of no party, and whose sole wish is to pursue with undeviating steps a path which would lead this country to respectability, wealth, and happiness, is exceedingly to be lamented. But such, for wise purposes, it is presumed, is the turbulence of human passions in party disputes, when victory more than truth is the palm contended for. ~ George Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by George Washington
If to please the people,we offer what we ourselves disapprove, how can we afterwards defend our work? Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair. The rest is in the hands of God. ~ George Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by George Washington
I say luck is when an opportunity comes along and you're prepared for it. ~ Denzel Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by Denzel Washington
When the going gets tough in Washington, presidents appoint 'blue ribbon' commissions. ~ Christopher Buckley
Lennis Washington quotes by Christopher Buckley
Since the inception of the Islamic Republic, the United States has pursued a policy of containment in various forms, essentially relying on political coercion and economic pressure to press Iran in the right direction. The failure of this policy is routinely documented by the U.S. State Department, which insists on issuing reports denouncing Iran as the most active state sponsor of terrorism and warning that its nuclear program is rapidly advancing toward weapons capability. The American diplomats fail to appreciate how, after twenty-seven years of sanctions and containment, Iran's misbehavior has not changed in any measurable manner. Even more curious, the failed policy of containment enjoys a widespread bipartisan consensus, as governments as different as the Clinton and Bush administrations have largely adhered to its parameters. Although at times the Bush White House has indulged in calls for regime change, its essential policy still reflects the containment consensus. In Washington policy circles evidently nothing succeeds like failure. ~ Ray Takeyh
Lennis Washington quotes by Ray Takeyh
So you never really tried to solve the problem.
Oh, c'mon. Can you ever "solve" poverty? Can you ever "solve" crime? Can you ever "solve" disease, unemployment, war, or any other societal herpes? Hell no. All you can hope for is to make them manageable enough to allow people to get on with their lives. That's not cynicism, that's maturity. You can't stop the rain. All you can do is just build a roof that you hope won't leak, or at least won't leak on the people who are gonna vote for you.
What does that mean?
C'mon ...
Seriously. What does that mean?
Fine, whatever, "Mister Smith goes to motherfuckin' Washington," it means that, in politics, you focus on the needs of your power base. Keep them happy, and they keep you in office. ~ Max Brooks
Lennis Washington quotes by Max Brooks
There is an elegant memorial in Washington to Jefferson, but none to Hamilton. However, if you seek Hamilton's monument, look around. You are living in it. We honor Jefferson, but live in Hamilton's country, a mighty industrial nation with a strong central government. ~ George F. Will
Lennis Washington quotes by George F. Will
There is nothing in this world so hard to get at as truth, and there is nothing in this world but truth that I care for. ~ Washington Irving
Lennis Washington quotes by Washington Irving
Mankind, when left to themselves, are unfit for their own government. ~ George Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by George Washington
The studies that show the reason Washington real estate is booming and there are so many lobbyists in town, it does pay. ~ Mark Shields
Lennis Washington quotes by Mark Shields
Honest good humor is the oil and wine of a merry meeting, and there is no jovial companionship equal to that where the jokes are rather small and laughter abundant. ~ Washington Irving
Lennis Washington quotes by Washington Irving
I went to Washington several times at the request of different parties to talk about education reform. I used to always say I felt like I needed to take a shower after I left, because it was so partisan that I just really hated it. ~ Paul Sadler
Lennis Washington quotes by Paul Sadler
When liberals say 'family', they mean 'Big Brother in Washington.' When we say 'family,' we mean 'honor thy father and mother.' ~ Ronald Reagan
Lennis Washington quotes by Ronald Reagan
My view is, Democrat, Republican, it doesn't matter, my view is I'm in Washington to try to work with people. ~ Mark Pryor
Lennis Washington quotes by Mark Pryor
Voiding likewise the accumulation of debt, not only by shunning occasions of expense, but by vigorous exertions in time of peace to discharge the debts, which unavoidable wars may have occasioned, not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burthen, which we ourselves ought to bear. ~ George Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by George Washington
I've seen disgusting excess in business, and I've seen disgusting excess in Washington. But at the same time, I've certainly learned that Washington matters and that you can't ignore it, especially when you get into telecom. ~ Esther Dyson
Lennis Washington quotes by Esther Dyson
Well, if you were the American public, you saw a catastrophe. In general, you would say, "The biggest institutions of America - Washington, broadly, and Wall Street, broadly - they're to blame." And, broadly, they're right. ~ Jamie Dimon
Lennis Washington quotes by Jamie Dimon
It's a big wide world, after all, and Mattawa, Washington, perched on the edge of it, is somewhere in between Nowhere and Nothing At All. ~ Elise Forier Edie
Lennis Washington quotes by Elise Forier Edie
In 1837, New York University erected a Gothic Revival building on the northeast corner of the parade grounds at Washington Square, constructed from stones cut by convicts at Sing Sing, the maximum-security prison located about thirty miles up the river in Ossining, New York. The indignant stonecutters of New York's Stonecutters Guild promptly organized New York's first mass labor demonstration in Washington Square, which continued for days. To complete its construction, NYU was forced to call in the 27th Regiment of the National Guard to clear the demonstrators from the site. ~ James Roman
Lennis Washington quotes by James Roman
To cover politics in Washington allows you to live in the very, very wide gap between what the actual truth is, and how people are trying to manipulate the truth. They speak in the language of spin, obsequiousness, obfuscation. The meta of politics is just this endless source of material that can shed light on the psychology of the process. ~ Mark Leibovich
Lennis Washington quotes by Mark Leibovich
We can't wait for Washington. Business leaders are going to have to galvanize their own constituencies and do everything they can to demonstrate confidence in the economy, and I think that can be contagious. ~ Howard Schultz
Lennis Washington quotes by Howard Schultz
There are enough fools in Washington to destroy the country without any help from Muslim terrorists. ~ Paul Craig Roberts
Lennis Washington quotes by Paul Craig Roberts
Six decades ago, as Mao's Communists seized power, the question in Washington was, 'Who lost China?' Now, as his capitalist descendants stand astride the world stage and Washington worries about decline, it seems to be, 'Who lost America?' ~ Eric Liu
Lennis Washington quotes by Eric Liu
I see no magic in tax dollars which are sent to Washington and then returned. I abhor the waste and incompetence of large-scale federal bureaucracies in this administration as well as in others. I do not favor state compulsion when voluntary individual effort can do the job and do it well. ~ John F. Kennedy
Lennis Washington quotes by John F. Kennedy
Sometimes I wonder whether Washington's liberal politicians truly understand the greatness that is America. ~ Mitt Romney
Lennis Washington quotes by Mitt Romney
No man knows what the wife of his bosom is until he has gone with her through the fiery trials of this world. ~ Washington Irving
Lennis Washington quotes by Washington Irving
Small business is the gateway to opportunity for those who want a piece of the American dream. [ ... ] Well, wouldn't it be nice to hear a little more about the forgotten heroes of America-those who create most of our new jobs, like the owners of stores down the street; the faithfuls who support our churches, synagogues, schools, and communities; the brave men and women everywhere who produce our goods, feed a hungry world, and keep our families warm while they invest in the future to build a better America? That's where miracles are made, not in Washington, D.C. ~ Ronald Reagan
Lennis Washington quotes by Ronald Reagan
The only way I can describe the extent of my anxiety is to say that I felt as if I were pregnant with a rock. ~ Katharine Graham
Lennis Washington quotes by Katharine Graham
The friendship I have conceived will not be impaired by absence; but it may be no unpleasing circumstance to brighten the chain by a renewal of the covenant. ~ George Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by George Washington
I'm going to Washington on a fateful, even historic, mission. I feel that I am an emissary of all Israel's citizens, even those who do not agree with me, and of the entire Jewish people ~ Samantha Power
Lennis Washington quotes by Samantha Power
Desert being the essential condition of praise, there can be no reality in the one without the other. ~ Washington Allston
Lennis Washington quotes by Washington Allston
Many of the same people who are crying for mankind to tolerate everything have overlooked examples of intolerance that have utterly reshaped the country in which we live. For instance, what would this country be like if George Washington had tolerated British troops? Where would we be today if Thomas Jefferson had tolerated King George III? Or what if Fredrick Douglas had tolerated slavery, or Martin Luther King Jr. had tolerated segregation? What would America be like if Winston Churchill had tolerated Adolf Hitler or if Susan B. Anthony tolerated only men voting? Part of what made these individuals great was that they were strong enough to stand up for their convictions. They recognized something as "wrong," and they didn't tolerate it. ~ Brad Harrub
Lennis Washington quotes by Brad Harrub
I think I have learned, in some degree at least, to disregard the old maxim ""Do not get others to do what you can do yourself."" My motto on the other hand is; ""Do not do that which others can do as well. ~ Booker T. Washington
Lennis Washington quotes by Booker T. Washington
Such was the formidable rival with whom Ichabod Crane had to contend, and, considering all things, a stouter man than he would have shrunk from the competition, and a wiser man would have despaired. He had, however, a happy mixture of pliability and perseverance in his nature; he was in form and spirit like a supple-jack - yielding, but tough; though he bent, he never broke; and though he bowed beneath the slightest pressure, yet, the moment it was away - jerk! - he was as erect, and carried his head as high as ever. ~ Washington Irving
Lennis Washington quotes by Washington Irving
A Washington summer is a physical being: a shaggy, slobbering beast; relentless, inescapable, forever panting its heavy, humid breath into the face of each citizen and pushing its weight against the wilting populace, demanding attention-a constant, unwelcome companion. ~ Jennifer Bort Yacovissi
