I wonder why he hastened to tell us that George Hearne was buried in the churchyard, and then added that naturally he was!'

'It's the natural place to be buried in,' said I.

'Quite. That's just why it was hardly worth mentioning.'

I felt then, just momentarily, just vaguely, as if my mind was regarding stray pieces of a jig-saw puzzle. The fancied ringing of the telephone bell last night was one of them, this burial of George Hearne in the churchyard was another, and, even more inexplicably, the ladder I had seen under the trees was a third. Consciously I made nothing whatever out of them, and did not feel the least inclination to devote any ingenuity to so fortuitous a collection of pieces. Why shouldn't I add, for that matter, our morning's bathe, or the gorse on the hillside? But I had the sensation that, though my conscious brain was presently occupied with piquet, and was rapidly growing sleepy with the day of sun and sea, some sort of mole inside it was digging passages and connecting corridors below the soil. ("Expiation") ~ E.F. Benson
Ingenuity quotes by E.F. Benson
'The Man Who Never Was,' by Ewen Montagu, remains the best book about wartime espionage written by an active participant - incomplete, and dry in parts, it nonetheless summons up the ingenuity and sheer eccentricity of those who played this strange and dangerous game. ~ Ben Macintyre
Ingenuity quotes by Ben Macintyre
It is natural that we face obstacles in pursuit of our goals. But if we remain passive, making no effort to solve the problems we meet, conflicts will arise and hindrances will grow. Transforming these obstacles into opportunities is a challenge to our human ingenuity. ~ Dalai Lama
Ingenuity quotes by Dalai Lama
Ive never been a big believer in ghosts or the spirit world, and for me, that was part of the point of the movie, ... What the Ghostbusters represented was the triumph of human courage and human ingenuity. People create their own monsters. Our fears come from within us, not outside. ~ Harold Ramis
Ingenuity quotes by Harold Ramis
Once, when a religionist denounced me in unmeasured terms, I sent him a card saying, I am sure you believe that I will go to hell when I die, and that once there I will suffer all the pains and tortures the sadistic ingenuity of your deity can devise and that this torture will continue forever. Isn't that enough for you? Do you have to call me bad names in addition? ~ Isaac Asimov
Ingenuity quotes by Isaac Asimov
Well, Chinese used to be seen as low, right? Working on the railroad, in laundries, and stuff like that. Now they're seen as smart and wealthy. I mean, isn't there the stereotype of the model minority? I read an article for school that said people like us - not you, Dr. Rosen - are now labeled as inquisitive, persistent, and ambitious. With ingenuity, fortitude, and cleverness. ~ Lisa See
Ingenuity quotes by Lisa See
Our ingenuity in feeding ourselves is prodigious, but at various points our technologies come into conflict with nature's ways of doing things, as when we seek to maximize efficiency by planting crops or raising animals in vast mono-cultures. This is something nature never does, always and for good reasons practicing diversity instead. A great many of the health and environmental problems created by our food system owe to our attempts to oversimplify nature's complexities, at both the growing and the eating ends of our food chain. ~ Michael Pollan
Ingenuity quotes by Michael Pollan
Among the repulsions of atheism for me has been its drastic un-interestingness as an intellectual position. Where was the ingenuity, the ambiguity, the humanity of saying that the universe just happened to happen and that when we're dead we're dead? ~ John Updike
Ingenuity quotes by John Updike
The religious Jew is to study Torah for the sake of studying Torah. Torah lishmah. The ingenuity of the edict, I realized was that it relieved you of the obligation to be qualified. You studied because you had to study, and those who taught had to take you as a student. ~ Judith Shulevitz
Ingenuity quotes by Judith Shulevitz
Yes!" He says. "Fear is an excellent motivator. I find that it really brings out the true ingenuity of a creature. ~ M.D. Elster
Ingenuity quotes by M.D. Elster
She made love with the freshness of an impatient virgin and the ingenuity of a sex-scarred whore. ~ Lawrence Block
Ingenuity quotes by Lawrence Block
It may be roundly asserted that human ingenuity cannot concoct a cipher which human ingenuity cannot resolve. ~ Edgar Allan Poe
Ingenuity quotes by Edgar Allan Poe
The system itself has the mark of cleverness and ingenuity ... When you manipulate the menu system, you feel as though you are at the helm of the future ... The Xbox probably has the most raw potential for excellent games ~ Jerry Holkins
Ingenuity quotes by Jerry Holkins
Through my scientific work I have come to believe more and more strongly that the physical universe is put together with an ingenuity so astonishing that I cannot accept it as a brute fact ... I cannot believe that our existence in this universe is a mere quirk of fate, an accident of history, an incidental blip in the great cosmic drama. ~ Paul Davies
Ingenuity quotes by Paul Davies
Every dish in the ferial cuisine, however, provides a double or treble delight: Not only is the body nourished and the palate pleased, the mind is intrigued by the triumph of ingenuity over scarcity - by the making of slight materials into a considerable matter. A man can do worse than to be poor. He can miss altogether the sight of the greatness of small things. ~ Robert Farrar Capon
Ingenuity quotes by Robert Farrar Capon
He [Ali] had a contempt of the world, its glory and pomp, he feared God much, gave many alms, was just in all his actions, humble and affable; of an exceeding quick wit and of an ingenuity that was not common, he was exceedingly learned, not in those sciences that terminate in speculations but those which extend to practice. ~ Henry Stubbe
Ingenuity quotes by Henry Stubbe
I am saddened by the modern system of advertising. Whatever evidence it offers of enterprise, ingenuity, impudence, and resource in certain individuals, it proves to my mind the wide prevalence of that form of mental degradation which is called gullibility. [An anarchist] ~ Joseph Conrad
Ingenuity quotes by Joseph Conrad
I have come to believe that food is history of the deepest kind. Everything we eat tells a tale of ingenuity and creation, domination and injustice-and does so more vividly than any other artifact, any other medium. ~ Robin Sloan
Ingenuity quotes by Robin Sloan
The earth will probably sink and drown; but at least it will be the result of generally acknowledged political and economic ideas, at least it will be accomplished with the help of the science, industry, and public opinion, with the application of all human ingenuity! No cosmic catastrophy, nothing but state, official, economic, and other causes. Nothing can be done to prevent it. ~ Karel Capek
Ingenuity quotes by Karel Capek
That is an expression, Sir John," said Marianne, warmly, "which I particularly dislike. I abhor every common–place phrase by which wit is intended; and "setting one's cap at a man," or "making a conquest," are the most odious of all. Their tendency is gross and illiberal; and if their construction could ever be deemed clever, time has long ago destroyed all its ingenuity. ~ Jane Austen
Ingenuity quotes by Jane Austen
Eviction reveals people's vulnerability and desperation, as well as their ingenuity and guts. ~ Matthew Desmond
Ingenuity quotes by Matthew Desmond
I think with a lot of filmmakers, their first film is their best film because they had to think on their feet and solve problems with ingenuity. ~ Peter Dinklage
Ingenuity quotes by Peter Dinklage
Mankind are more indebted to industry than ingenuity; the gods set up their favors at a price, and industry is the purchaser. ~ Joseph Addison
Ingenuity quotes by Joseph Addison
The implausible, well-nigh-miraculous functioning anarchy that we know as New York is adorned with every excellence of Western art. It is a city of manifold suggestions, which ministers to every ambition, engenders a thousand talents, nurtures ingenuity and experimentation. ~ Ibn Warraq
Ingenuity quotes by Ibn Warraq
But the conceit of one's self and the conceit of one's hobby are hardly more prolific of eccentricity than the conceit of one's money. Avarice, the most hateful and wolfish of all the hard, cool, callous dispositions of selfishness, has its own peculiar caprices and crotchets. The ingenuities of its meanness defy all the calculations of reason, and reach the miraculous in subtlety. ~ Edwin Percy Whipple
Ingenuity quotes by Edwin Percy Whipple
Knowledge is not a substitute for ingenuity, merely an accelerant. ~ Claire North
Ingenuity quotes by Claire North
Like psychoanalysis, constitutional jurisprudence has become a game without rules. By defying the plain meaning of words, ignoring context and history, and using a little ingenuity, you can make the Constitution mean anything you like. ~ Joseph Sobran
Ingenuity quotes by Joseph Sobran
Innovation comes out of great human ingenuity and very personal passions. ~ Megan Smith
Ingenuity quotes by Megan Smith
Anywhere the struggle is great, the level of ingenuity and inventiveness is high. ~ Eleni Zaude Gabre-Madhin
Ingenuity quotes by Eleni Zaude Gabre-Madhin
An enormous amount of ingenuity and creativity goes into commercials, and they can be fascinating if you pay attention. ~ Gretchen Rubin
Ingenuity quotes by Gretchen Rubin
Ingenuity is true intelligence. Not study. ~ John Bentley
Ingenuity quotes by John Bentley
When Steampunk meets adventure and adventure meets comedy and comedy meets ingenuity and ingenuity meets charm and charm meets wonder and wonder meets pleasure the result is a Triumph. Dr Grordbort is the future. And the past. Which makes an ideal present. ~ Stephen Fry
Ingenuity quotes by Stephen Fry
The slaves in Rome were incapable of leisure and so their masters gave them entertainment to keep them pacified. ~ Oliver DeMille
Ingenuity quotes by Oliver DeMille
Mechanism as a philosophic doctrine might be defined as the belief that the last machine which human ingenuity has created gives us the final form of reality. ~ William Barrett
Ingenuity quotes by William Barrett
We have the power to improve our work lives immeasurably through awareness, compassion, patience & ingenuity. ~ Sharon Salzberg
Ingenuity quotes by Sharon Salzberg
Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Ingenuity quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
Bounds should be set
To ingenuity for being so cruel
In bringing change unheralded on the unready. ~ Robert Frost
Ingenuity quotes by Robert Frost
You can come up with reasons for why you can't do something until you're blue in the face. Instead of wasting the energy coming up with those reasons, use that same energy to find ways to make it happen. You'll be surprised at your ingenuity. ~ Erin Rooney Doland
Ingenuity quotes by Erin Rooney Doland
Willis Rodney Whitney ... once compared scientific research to a bridge being constructed by a builder who was fascinated by the construction problems involved. Basic research, he suggested, is such a bridge built wherever it strikes the builder's fancy-wherever the construction problems seem to him to be most challenging. Applied research, on the other hand, is a bridge built where people are waiting to get across the river. The challenge to the builder's ingenuity and skill, Whitney pointed out, can be as great in one case as the other. ~ Chauncey Guy Suits
Ingenuity quotes by Chauncey Guy Suits
We have to understand in value what the services of nature are so that we can understand that degrading them is an irreplaceable resource that no amount of money or human ingenuity can replace. ~ Harrison Ford
Ingenuity quotes by Harrison Ford
Little minds find gratification for their feelings, benevolent or otherwise, by a constant exercise of petty ingenuity. ~ Honore De Balzac
Ingenuity quotes by Honore De Balzac
Our kitchens are filled with ghosts. You may not see them, but you could not cook as you do without their ingenuity: the potters who first enabled us to boil and stew; the knife forgers; the resourceful engineers who designed the first refrigerators; the pioneers of gas and electric ovens; the scale makers; the inventors of eggbeaters and peelers. ~ Bee Wilson
Ingenuity quotes by Bee Wilson
Giovanni smiled his humble, grateful smile and told me in as many ways as he could find how wonderful it was to have me there, how I stood, with my love and my ingenuity, between him and the dark. Each day he invited me to witness how he had changed, how love had changed him, how he worked and sang and cherished me. I was in a terrible confusion. Sometimes I thought, but this is your life. Stop fighting it. Stop fighting. Or I thought, but I am happy, And he loves me. I am safe. Sometimes, when he was not near me, I thought, I will never let him touch me again. Then, when he touched me, I thought it doesn't matter, it is only the body, it will soon be over. When it was over I lay in the dark and listen to his breathing and dreamed of the touch of hands, of Giovanni's hands, or anybody's hands, hands which would have the power to crash me and make me whole again. ~ James Baldwin
Ingenuity quotes by James Baldwin
Made up of a dozen billion microscopic nerve-cell units interconnected by millions upon millions of conducting nerve-threads weaving incredibly intricate patterns, the brain, as an object of research, presents a defiant challenge to its own ingenuity. ~ William Feindel
Ingenuity quotes by William Feindel
I think ingenuity is part of our DNA. That plus curiosity, plus the willingness to commit. ~ Gail Zappa
Ingenuity quotes by Gail Zappa
For it seemed to me that much more truth could be found in the reasonings which a man makes concerning matters that concern him than in those which some scholar makes in his study about speculative matters. For the consequences of the former will soon punish the man if he judges wrongly, whereas the latter have no practical consequences and no importance for the scholar except that perhaps the further they are from common sense the more pride he will take in them, since he will have had to use so much more skill and ingenuity in trying to render them plausible. ~ Rene Descartes
Ingenuity quotes by Rene Descartes
Dante, I think, committed a crude blunder when, with a terror-inspiring ingenuity, he placed above the gateway of his hell the inscription, 'I too was created by eternal love'
at any rate, there would be more justification for placing above the gateway to the Christian Paradise ... the inscription 'I too was created by eternal hate' ... ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Ingenuity quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Before this country came on the scene, for thousands of years people did things the same way. Within 200 years of the advent of this nation, men were walking on the moon, and I want us to recognize this is the kind of people that we are. We're creative with a lot of ingenuity and a lot of energy. ~ Ben Carson
Ingenuity quotes by Ben Carson
As the few adepts in such things well know, universal morality is to be found in little everyday penny-events just as much as in great ones. There is so much goodness and ingenuity in a raindrop that an apothecary wouldn't let it go for less than half-a-crown ... ~ Georg C. Lichtenberg
Ingenuity quotes by Georg C. Lichtenberg
A well-read writer, with good taste, is one who has the command of the wit of other men; he searches where knowledge is to be found; and though he may not himself excel in invention, his ingenuity may compose one of those agreeable books, the deliciae of literature, that will out-last the fading meteors of his day. ~ Isaac D'Israeli
Ingenuity quotes by Isaac D'Israeli
As I see it, the only pleasure of living is that every joke should be made, every thought expressed, every line of investigation, irrespective of its direction, pursued to the uttermost limits that human ingenuity, courage and understanding can take it. The moment that limits are set ... then the flavor is gone. ~ Malcolm Muggeridge
Ingenuity quotes by Malcolm Muggeridge
To disclose too much of one's inventions and achievements is one and the same thing as to give up the fruit of one's ingenuity. ~ Filippo Brunelleschi
Ingenuity quotes by Filippo Brunelleschi
In our industrial and social system the interests of all men are so closely intertwined that in the immense majority of cases a straight-dealing man who by his efficiency, by his ingenuity and industry, benefits himself must also benefit others. ~ Edmund Morris
Ingenuity quotes by Edmund Morris
Under the dark evening sky, the skyscrapers seemed to become gigantic natural monoliths, and all the super-sized structures that so dominated the city, that so marked Coruscant as a monument to the ingenuity of the reasoning species, seemed somehow the mark of folly, of futile pride striving against the vastness and majesty beyond the grasp of any mortal. ~ R.A. Salvatore
Ingenuity quotes by R.A. Salvatore
The way to an American economic comeback, the way to help those out of work today find a paycheck, is to unleash the forces of job creation in America. The source of new jobs isn't going to be the bureaucracies of Washington, but rather the creativity, ingenuity, and hard work of the American people. ~ Rob Portman
Ingenuity quotes by Rob Portman
Central heating, French rubber goods and cookbooks are three amazing proofs of man's ingenuity in transforming necessity into art, and, of these, cookbooks are perhaps most lastingly delightful. ~ M.F.K. Fisher
Ingenuity quotes by M.F.K. Fisher
The ordinary writer has an unmistakable preference for this style, because it causes the reader to spend time and trouble in understanding that which he would have understood in a moment without it; and this makes it look as though the writer had more depth and intelligence than the reader. This is, indeed, one of those artifices referred to above, by means of which mediocre authors unconsciously, and as it were by instinct, strive to conceal their poverty of thought and give an appearance of the opposite. their ingenuity in this respect is really astounding. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Ingenuity quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
Logic is a large drawer, containing some useful instruments, and many more that are superfluous. A wise man will look into it for two purposes, to avail himself of those instruments that are really useful, and to admire the ingenuity with which those that are not so, are assorted and arranged. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
Ingenuity quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
From tattered flags and uniforms to friendships strained to the brink, the women of my country had always been the menders to all the things torn asunder. But now we'd do more than patch with needle and thread. We'd have to weave together a whole tapestry of American life with nothing but our own hands, our own crops, and our own ingenuity. And I would prove myself able to the task. There ~ Stephanie Dray
Ingenuity quotes by Stephanie Dray
You have to, in some ways, trust in the human spirit and in human ingenuity. ~ Ariel Garten
Ingenuity quotes by Ariel Garten
She had responded to the loss of her husband, to poverty, to disease, and to family cruelty with boldness and ingenuity, by opening herself to others, especially to her children and her Church, pouring into these precious vessels her knowledge, hope, and devotion. ~ Philip Zaleski
Ingenuity quotes by Philip Zaleski
The United States has never been afraid of a challenge. In times of crisis, it is American innovation and ingenuity that has forged the path to progress and prosperity. ~ Diana DeGette
Ingenuity quotes by Diana DeGette
Imagine a country where the majority of the population reaps the majority of the benefits for their hard work, creative ingenuity, and collaborative efforts. Imagine a country where corporate losses arent socialized, while gains are captured by an exclusive minority. Imagine a country run as a democracy, from the bottom up, not a plutocracy from the top down. Richard Wolff not only imagines it, but in his compelling, captivating and stunningly reasoned new book, Democracy at Work, he details how we get there from here - and why we absolutely must. ~ Nomi Prins
Ingenuity quotes by Nomi Prins
The detective story, as created by Poe, is something as specialised and as intellectual as a chess problem, whereas the best English detective fiction has relied less on the beauty of the mathematical problem and much more on the intangible human element. [ ... ] In The Moonstone the mystery is finally solved, not altogether by human ingenuity, but largely by accident. Since Collins, the best heroes of English detective fiction have been, like Sergeant Cuff, fallible. ~ T. S. Eliot
Ingenuity quotes by T. S. Eliot
He said when you use your brain, no-one comes near you for ingenuity ~ Sophie Kinsella
Ingenuity quotes by Sophie Kinsella
On most days, if I'm true to myself, I just want to share my life with the poor, regardless of result. I want to lean into the challenge of intractable problems with as tender a heart as I can locate, knowing that there is some divine ingenuity here, "the slow work of God," that gets done if we're faithful. ~ Greg Boyle
Ingenuity quotes by Greg Boyle
But like most actions that rely on faith, it still took plenty of our own muscle and ingenuity. ~ Heather Lende
Ingenuity quotes by Heather Lende
The beloved's features too were standardized in certain adjectives of color and shape and likened to natural objects, fruit and flowers especially. As a result, ingenuity in finding fresh ways to follow the pattern was required in addition to actual poetic powers. The challenge was great and it accounts for the quantity of verbal lovemaking in the blue, addressed to the remote or non-existent tribes of Celias and Delias. ~ Jacques Barzun
Ingenuity quotes by Jacques Barzun
That was not the biggest battle that ever was, but for me it always typified one thing; the dash, the ingenuity, the readiness at the first opportunity that characterizes the American soldier. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
Ingenuity quotes by Dwight D. Eisenhower
He rejoices in the reason conferred on mankind but mistrusts the shifting sands of man's ingenuity. ~ Sarah Perry
Ingenuity quotes by Sarah Perry
The whole system has been long since swept away, and its records merely remain as illustrations of perverted ingenuity. ~ Richard A. Proctor
Ingenuity quotes by Richard A. Proctor
The man who is admired for the ingenuity of his larceny is almost always rediscovering some earlier form of fraud. The basic forms are all known, have all been practiced. The manners of capitalism improve. The morals may not. ~ John Kenneth Galbraith
Ingenuity quotes by John Kenneth Galbraith
Profoundness, genius, spontaneity, merit, nobility, ingenuity, voice propriety, feeling, discernment, sensibility, good taste, great tone, rightness, courtliness, vivacity, boldness, style, freshness, harmony, perfection, imagination, purity, correctness. The greatest writer of all times. God's most astonishing creation. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Ingenuity quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Lots of ingenuity gets you through times with no money better than money gets you through times of no ingenuity. ~ Terry Pratchett
Ingenuity quotes by Terry Pratchett
Motherhood is a blissful chain ... I have a mother - my precious gift ... I am a mother - the best of my kind! ~ Jaachynma N.E. Agu
Ingenuity quotes by Jaachynma N.E. Agu
What could we do? What should we do? 'There are no prescriptions,' Luria wrote, 'in a case like this. Do whatever your ingenuity and your heart suggest. There is little or no hope of any recovery in his memory. But a man does not consist of memory alone. He has feeling, will, sensibilities, moral being - matters of which neuropsychology cannot speak. And it is here, beyond the realm of an impersonal psychology, that you may find ways to touch him, and change him. [...] Neuropsychologically, there is little or nothing you can do; but in the realm of the Individual, there may be much you can do. ~ Oliver Sacks
Ingenuity quotes by Oliver Sacks
Without subtle ingenuity of mind, one cannot make certain of the truth of their reports. ~ Sun Tzu
Ingenuity quotes by Sun Tzu
The making of the far-famed New York Central Park was opposed by even good men, with misguided pluck, perseverance, and ingenuity, but straight right won its way, and now that park is appreciated. So we confidently believe it will be with our great national parks and forest reservations. ~ John Muir
Ingenuity quotes by John Muir
With his wife's imperious face peering down at him, Lord Maccon took a moment to wonder why he had thought to crave such a woman in his life. Alexia bent over and nibbled at his chest. Ah, yes, initiative and ingenuity. ~ Gail Carriger
Ingenuity quotes by Gail Carriger
Between 1980 and 2000 the number of patents registered in Israel was 7652 compared with 367 for all the Arab countries combined. In 2008 alone is really inventors applied to register 9591 new patents. The equivalent figure for Iran was 50 and for all majority Muslim countries in the world with 5657. ~ Niall Ferguson
Ingenuity quotes by Niall Ferguson
I love skyscrapers. Visiting cities lush with tall buildings has always been a treat for me. The implications of these immense towers are tremendous - a representation of the power of mind over matter. It never ceases to amaze me that within our minds exist the power to transform earthly materials into these colossal giants. For me, a walk among skyscrapers is a pleasant reminder of the boundless potential of human thought. ~ Todd William
Ingenuity quotes by Todd William
Any meal at the front was an exercise in war-time ingenuity and devotion of the lower classes for their officers. The Petite Marmite a la Thermit was from beef-broth cubes, the tinned Canadian salmon was called Saumon de Tin A & Q Sauce. The Epaule d'Agneau Wellington, N.Z. was army ration lamb, and the terrine of foie gras aux truffes was a can of foie gras that I had bought from the French commanding general. There was a salad of fresh lettuce from somewhere (no one asked in what or whose fertilizer it had been grown in since we would all soon be dead anyway) and the Macedoine de Fruits a la Quatre Bas was a can of mixed fruit. Then fresh strawberries soaked in Cognac. All the usual wines starting with an amontillado, Pommery Extra Sec, Chateau Steenworde Claret, Graham's Five Crowns Port, Bisquit Dubouche Grande Champagne Cognac, Brandy and a Waterloo Cup. ~ Jeremiah Tower
Ingenuity quotes by Jeremiah Tower
After all, as we're constantly reminded, the Internet has unleashed all sorts of creative vision and collaborative ingenuity. What it has really brought about is a kind of bizarre inversion of ends and means, where creativity is marshaled to the service of administration rather than the other way around. ~ David Graeber
Ingenuity quotes by David Graeber
The insights given by a great professor are a privilege to receive. To be a teacher, by contrast, calls for more ingenuity and patience; it is the canny art of coaxing insights out of the students themselves. ~ Caitlin Keiper
Ingenuity quotes by Caitlin Keiper
In another building, I was shown his [Mr Brunel's] manufactory of shoes, which, like the other, is full of ingenuity, and, in regard to subdivision of labour, brings this fabric on a level with the oft-admired manufactory of pins. Every step in it is effected by the most elegant and precise machinery; while as each operation is performed by one hand, so each shoe passes through twenty-five hands, who complete from the hide, as supplied by the currier, a hundred pair of strong and well-finished shoes per day. All the details are performed by ingenious applications of the mechanic powers, and all the parts are characterized by precision, uniformity, and accuracy. As each man performs but one step in the process, which implies no knowledge of what is done by those who go before or follow him, so the persons employed are not shoemakers, but wounded soldiers, who are able to learn their respective duties in a few hours. The contract at which these shoes are delivered to government is 6s. 6d. per pair, being at least 2s. less than what was paid previously for an unequal and cobbled article.

While, however, we admire these triumphs of mechanics, and congratulate society on the prospect of enjoying more luxuries at less cost of human labour, it ought not to be forgotten, that the general good in such cases is productive of great partial evils, against which a paternal government ought to provide. No race of workmen being proverbially more industrious than shoemakers, it is ~ Richard Phillips
Ingenuity quotes by Richard Phillips
His conversation was full of imagination, and very often in limitation of ther Persian, and Arabic writers, he invented tales of wonderful fancy and passion. At other times he repeated my fsvorite poems or drew me out into arguments, wich he suported with great ingenuity. ~ Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Ingenuity quotes by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
It is quite obvious that the human race has made a queer mess of life on this planet. But as a people we probably harbor seeds of goodness that have lain for a long time waiting to sprout when conditions are right. Man's curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that these same traits will enable him to claw his way out. ~ E.B. White
Ingenuity quotes by E.B. White
The backfire, my dear boy, of exiling the cleverest criminals of the nation to one place and requiring them to use their ingenuity is that they will
and you can't control what they do with it. ~ Sam Starbuck
Ingenuity quotes by Sam Starbuck
Instead of begging OPEC to drop its oil prices, let's use American leadership and ingenuity to solve our own energy problems. ~ Pete Domenici
Ingenuity quotes by Pete Domenici
Obsession is like a pretty, little, picket fence that offers itself up as a thin line--a separation between ingenuity and insanity. ~ S.D. Lawendowski
Ingenuity quotes by S.D. Lawendowski
Clearly the human story is one of acceleration. There has been a Moore curve in terms of the number of people alive on the planet, our technological ability, and our ability to understand ourselves. We have had this extraordinary, explosive growth in our ingenuity. ~ Andrew Marr
Ingenuity quotes by Andrew Marr
You don't change the world by hiding in the woods, wearing a hair shirt, or buying indulgences in the form of 'Save the Earth' bumper stickers. You do it by articulating a vision for the future and pursuing it with all the ingenuity humanity can muster. ~ Alex Steffen
Ingenuity quotes by Alex Steffen
I like weird. Conformity bores but is inescapable for the most part. We all follow something, even if it is following the goal of wanting to stand apart. We are a sea of ordinary people; it is always the quirk, the flaw or the ingenuity that stands out. ~ Donna Lynn Hope
Ingenuity quotes by Donna Lynn Hope
Seeing 'Pretty Little Liars' fans adapt and create their own stories is both exciting and flattering, and I think what Amazon Publishing is offering through Kindle Worlds is a great way to reward their ingenuity. ~ Sara Shepard
Ingenuity quotes by Sara Shepard
I have only strength and ingenuity, and neither trade nor land. ~ Louis L'Amour
Ingenuity quotes by Louis L'Amour
By making college more affordable for all and more accessible for minority students, the first new higher education authorizing legislation in a decade will help strengthen our nation and America's middle class, and spur a new age of innovation and ingenuity in our country. ~ Nancy Pelosi
Ingenuity quotes by Nancy Pelosi
admire the ingenuity that goes into this but I am not at all convinced that such people have quite got the right end of the stick. Does God really want us to know, in exact detail, ancient Babylonian history? I suspect not. But I am confident that God does want us to know how people in circumstances of acute displacement, living with the fear and the anxiety of a persecuted minority, responded to a hostile state and a pagan power. ~ Rowan Williams
Ingenuity quotes by Rowan Williams
When I helped to develop the open standards that computers use to communicate with one another across the Net, I hoped for but could not predict how it would blossom and how much human ingenuity it would unleash. ~ Vint Cerf
Ingenuity quotes by Vint Cerf
Peter Hyland's poems are both elegantly wrought and meditatively wild. They testify to an original, restless intelligence. He can cast his imagination into a woman's dress, the mind of a grasshopper, or into the glass eyeballs of a buffalo head mounted on the wall of a home in suburban Texas to contemplate 'man's tireless ingenuity.' ~ Tony Hoagland
Ingenuity quotes by Tony Hoagland
Ingenuity was apparently given man in order that he may supply himself in crises with shapes and sounds with which to guard himself from truth. ~ William Faulkner
Ingenuity quotes by William Faulkner
