Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul,
May keep the path, but will not reach the goal;
While he who walks in love may wander far,
Yet God will bring him where the blessed are. ~ Henry Van Dyke

I went to a rare live Van Dyke show and met him there. And then he came to a show of mine and we spoke back stage. The third time was at Brian Wilson's birthday party. ~ Matthew Sweet
Dyke quotes by Matthew Sweet

Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
A clean and sensitive conscience, a steady and scrupulous integrity in small things as well as large, is the most valuable of all possessions, to a nation as to an individual. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
So it's actually way easier just to humor these men who grew up watching movies where the girl doesn't like the hero until he's been persistent enough to make her like him. This is the grease that keeps the gears of the heteronormativity machine spinning, obviously, but it's just easier to slip out of an awkward situation with an awkward guy than it is to call out the misogyny inherent in what he's doing. It's a tough spot to be in, but also this is coming from an angry dyke who's also trans and who, at one point, had society try to use her as a vessel for that kinda of misogyny. ~ Imogen Binnie
Dyke quotes by Imogen Binnie
Like water spilt upon the ground
alas, Our little lives flow swiftly on and pass; Yet may they bring rich harvests and green grass! ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
Some people never change their mind through their whole lives, about anything, despite new information that comes in. And now that we know that homosexuality is not a choice, it's biological, I think we have to love and understand them. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Love is not getting, but giving; It is goodness, and honor, and peace and pure living. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
Books are where words live. I read to discover if anybody's home. ~ Tom Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Tom Van Dyke
Oh, I had an idea for a pilot of my own at the time, and then Carl sent me about eight scripts and simply I threw my idea out the window because the writing was just so good. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Hating, hating, hating, that's all I ever hear. People are never just people. No, everybody's a faggot or a dyke or a nigger or a dirty Jew or a goddamn liberal or something." She clenched her fists and pressed them to her temples. "Oh, Jesus, I'm so sick of it. And now you're willing to forget everything that was good about Lissa and despise her memory just because she had something inside that made her love women instead of men?" Eyes ablaze: "Is that the kind of person you are? ~ Iolanthe Woulff
Dyke quotes by Iolanthe Woulff

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Favorite People, Favorite Places,
Favorite Memories of the past ...
These are the joys of a lifetime
Those are the things that last ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
The mountains that enfold the vale
With walls of granite, steep and high,
Invite the fearless foot to scale
Their stairway toward the sky.

The restless, deep, dividing sea
That flows and foams from shore to shore,
Calls to its sunburned chivalry,
"Push out, set sail, explore!"

And all the bars at which we fret,
That seem to prison and control,
Are but the doors of daring, set
Ajar before the soul.

Say not, "Too poor," but freely give;
Sigh not, "Too weak," but boldly try,
You never can begin to live
Until you dare to die. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke

Christ never asks us to give up merely for the sake of giving up, but always in order to win something better. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
He had never killed a child; he had never arrested anyone. But he had broken the fragile dyke that protected the purity of his soul from the seething darkness around him. The blood of the camps and the ghettos had gushed over him and carried him away ... There was no longer any divide between him and the darkness; he himself was part of the darkness. ~ Vasily Grossman
Dyke quotes by Vasily Grossman

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Arnie pulls at my T-shirt. I shove his hand away. He pushes down the toilet handle and the bathroom fills with that flush sound. Tucker says, "You taking a dump?"
"No."
"Liar. I heard the flush. You were taking a dump."
"But I ... "
"I just wish you'd admit it. We got to be honest with each other."

Dyke quotes by Peter Hedges
I have also heard and read various accounts of why they [Sheldon Leonard and Carl Reiner] liked me. My favorites? I wasn't too good-looking, I walked a little funny, and I was basically kind of average and ordinary. I guess my lack of perfection turned out to be a winning hand. Let that be a lesson for future generations. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Audre Lorde
I have two kids who were like me, we get out of bed feeling good, and the other two would sit at the breakfast table and grumble. I think it's born into us. I usually wake up feeling pretty good. Looking forward to the day. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
The brave man is intelligent; he faces danger because he understands it and is prepared to meet it. The drunkard who runs, in the delirium of intoxication, into a burning house is not brave; he is only stupid. But the clear-eyed hero who makes his way, with every sense alert and every nerve strung, into the hell of flames to rescue some little child, proves his courage. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
We measure success by accumulation. The measure is false. The true measure is appreciation. He who loves most has most. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
One story sums up their magical quality. On June 30th 1968, at the height of Apple optimism, Paul McCartney and Derek Taylor were driving back to London from Saltaire, Yorkshire, where they had been recording the Black Dyke Mills Band on a song of Paul's called 'Thingummybob'. They were in Bedfordshire. Let's pick a village on the map and pay it a visit, said Beatle Paul. He found a village called Harrold, which they found quite hilarious, and turned off the A5. Harrold turned out to be a picture-perfect village, with a picture-perfect pub at its heart. The pub was closed, but when the villagers saw there was a Beatle at the door they opened it up. Soon the whole village was in the pub, listening to Paul McCartney on the pub piano playing the as-yet-unreleased 'Hey Jude'. Every Harrold resident danced and sang along, and the revelry went on until 3 a.m. It was beautiful, perfect, spontaneous and full of love. Harrold. You couldn't make it up. ~ Bob Stanley
Dyke quotes by Bob Stanley
Everybody knows that I'm shorter, but it doesn't bother me at all. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Hope is life's essential nutrient, and love is what gives life meaning. I think you need somebody to love and take care of, and someone who loves you back. In that sense, I think the New Testament got it right. So did the Beatles. Without love, nothing has any meaning. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Life is like a box of chocolates, I'm a nerd and I read books ~ Dick Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
Shoot the pasties off the nipples of a ten-foot bull-dyke and win a cotton-candy goat. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Dyke quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
We all cultivated critique--we were dogmatic in our alliances, self-righteous in our beliefs. But the broader Mission dyke culture we called queer, so much of it was about loyalty at any cost. Loyalty could mean safety but it could also mean reenacting high school popularity contests and taking on the victors' roles. High school was only a few years in the past for most of us, even if we might have been scandalized if anyone had mentioned that. Accountability only occurred when people would get in dramatic fights, and it was more about whose team was stronger or more popular than about what actually happened. ~ Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore
Dyke quotes by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore
We should never judge a day by its weather. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
If all the skies were sunshine Our faces would be fain To feel once more upon them The cooling splash of rain. If all the world were music, Our hearts would often long For one sweet strain of silence, To break the endless song If life were always merry, Our souls would seek relief, And rest from weary laughter In the quiet arms of grief. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
Fidelity is simply daring to be true in small things as well as great. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
The simple life which blandly ignores all care and conflict, soon becomes flabby and invertebrate, sentimental and gelatinous. ~ Henry Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
In warlike pomp, with banners flowing, The regiments of autumn stood: I saw their gold and scarlet glowing From every hillside, every wood. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
I agreed with his thesis that God was not an all-powerful "cosmic superman" looking down from the penthouse as much as He was Love. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
A river is the most human and companionable of all inanimate things. It has a life, a character, a voice of its own; and it is as full of good fellowship as a sugar maple is of sap. It can talk in various tones, loud or low, and of many subjects grave and gay ... For real company and friendship there is nothing, outside of the animal kingdom, that is comparable to a river. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
I've had a lot of writers, in particular, who said they got into writing because of the 'Van Dyke Show.' They said it looked like fun. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
America for Me

'Tis fine to see the Old World and travel up and down
Among the famous palaces and cities of renown,
To admire the crumblyh castles and the statues and kings
But now I think I've had enough of antiquated things.

So it's home again, and home again, America for me!
My heart is turning home again and there I long to be,
In the land of youth and freedom, beyond the ocean bars,
Where the air is full of sunlight and the flag is full of stars.

Oh, London is a man's town, there's power in the air;
And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair;
And it's sweet to dream in Venice, and it's great to study Rome;
But when it comes to living there is no place like home.

I like the German fir-woods in green battalions drilled;
I like the gardens of Versailles with flashing foutains filled;
But, oh, to take your hand, my dear, and ramble for a day
In the friendly western woodland where Nature has her sway!

I know that Europe's wonderful, yet something seems to lack!
The Past is too much with her, and the people looking back.
But the glory of the Present is to make the Future free--
We love our land for what she is and what she is to be.

Oh, it's home again, and home again, America for me!
I want a ship that's westward bound to plough the rolling sea,
To the blessed Land of Room Enough, beyond the ocean bars,
Where th ~ Henry Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke

Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
It is with rivers as it is with people: the greatest are not always the most agreeable nor the best to live with. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
What do I owe my father? Everything! ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
I've retired so many times now it's getting to be a habit. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Pretty girls lie at the centre of straight culture, dyke culture, fag culture. They sell everything, they buy everything, they ruin great men and women, and finally they ruin themselves, accidentally, simply by getting old. ~ Zadie Smith
Dyke quotes by Zadie Smith
There's no tradition today except initials, 'CSI,' 'NCIS,' all the rest. Even with reruns today, people don't know there was a 'Dick Van Dyke Show,' or 'Andy Griffith,' or 'Cheers.' ~ Bill Cosby
Dyke quotes by Bill Cosby
Occasionally, you will come across a wise crack by a pseudoliberal who will refer to God as "she," as if that is the most revolutionary idea known to man, that God could be feminine. Never in such a context is the history of the sexuality of God elucidated, as if it was so obvious to all that God could only be masculine, until the author came along and declared by fiat its femininity. In fact, there did exist matriarchal societies extending from the unknown past into the early historical period. It appears they existed along the "highland zone" which is the foothills extending along the mountainous region from the Pyrenees to the Himalayas. These matriarchal societies influenced the early Sumerian civilization and to a large extent the Minoan civilization, which was one of the few, if not the only matriarchal civilization. These societies were largely overrun and dissipated by invasions of the northern, patriarchal groups but these latter groups did incorporate some matriarchal aspects which exist to this day. For example, although the chief deities of Greece and Rome were masculine, there continued to be a panoply of feminine gods. Or take for example, the history of the Basque people of SW France. Also, when masculine Judaism moved from the Levant to Rome via moderate Christianity and the reconciling Paul, it eventually grafted in the idea of Virgin Mary the Divine. A distant version of this idea stands in New York harbor with her head and torch held high, neither bull dyke ~ Scott Mckee
Dyke quotes by Scott Mckee
Thou warden of the western gate, above Manhattan Bay, The fogs of doubt that hid thy face are driven clean away: Thine eyes at last look far and clear, thou liftest high thy hand To spread the light of liberty world-wide for every land. ~ Henry Van Dyke
Dyke quotes by Henry Van Dyke
