The apostle Paul often appears in Christian thought as the one chiefly responsible for the de-Judaization of the gospel and even for the transmutation of the person of Jesus from a rabbi in the Jewish sense to a divine being in the Greek sense. Such an interpretation of Paul became almost canonical in certain schools of biblical criticism during the nineteenth century, especially that of Ferdinand Christian Baur, who saw the controversy between Paul and Peter as a conflict between the party of Peter, with its 'Judaizing' distortion of the gospel into a new law, and the party of Paul, with its universal vision of the gospel as a message about Jesus for all humanity. Very often, of course, this description of the opposition between Peter and Paul and between law and gospel was cast in the language of the opposition between Roman Catholicism (which traced its succession to Peter as the first pope) and Protestantism (which arose from Luther's interpretation of the epistles of Paul). Luther's favorite among those epistles, the letter to the Romans, became the charter for this supposed declaration of independence from Judaism. ~ Jaroslav Pelikan
Christian Thought quotes by Jaroslav Pelikan
Christian thought, from the outset, denies that (in themselves) suffering, death, and evil have any ultimate value or spiritual meaning at all. It claims that they are cosmic contingencies, ontological shadows, intrinsically devoid of substance or purpose, however much God may - under the conditions of a fallen order - make them the occasions for accomplishing his good ends. ~ David Bentley Hart
Christian Thought quotes by David Bentley Hart
Rabbi Kushner writes from a wealth of Jewish wisdom and pastoral devotion, but his theology is, I find, is wholly in keeping with contemporary Christian thought. So far as there is an answer to the conflict between the goodness of God and the bitterness of suffering, this is it ~ Gerald Priestland
Christian Thought quotes by Gerald Priestland
Liberal humanists now seem to dominate the fields of art, journalism, and communication, which are powerful and uniquely able to spread anti-Christian thought. ~ Tim LaHaye
Christian Thought quotes by Tim LaHaye
In his 1986 autobiographical work, Confessions of a Theologian, Carl F. H. Henry, dean of twentieth-century American evangelical theologians, lamented that several Christian colleges and universities had started to veer away from the centrality of their work, by and large giving up the cognitive focus on Christian thought in favor of Christian piety and activism. ~ David S. Dockery
Christian Thought quotes by David S. Dockery
Since one could virtually open the Bible to any page and likely find something that speaks to his particular situation, is it fair to attribute this to the voice of God? After all, the Bible is not the only relevant book in existence. There are other religions with other scriptural texts which could do the same job. In fact, the text need not even be "scriptural." I could select Sartre's "Existentialism and Humanism" off the shelf, randomly flip to any page, and likely find something applicable to my life. Does this mean God is speaking through the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre, a man who was by no means considered a friend to Christian thought? If the answer is yes, then who really needs to read the Bible? If this God is capable of turning anything into his "word" at any time, then you could theoretically receive a message from him in your Alpha-Bits. ~ Michael Vito Tosto
Christian Thought quotes by Michael Vito Tosto
In Europe, what seems to bond toads and toadstools strongly is their shared role as potentially toxic "agents of death", and their close associations with magic and the supernatural. In Christian thought, both were seen to represent the dark and evil threads of nature's tapestry. Both appeared in late medieval art in representations of hell, particularly in the work of Flemish artists. ~ Adrian Morgan
Christian Thought quotes by Adrian Morgan
The world's sewage system threatens to contaminate the stream of Christian thought. Satan will contest every hour you spend in Bible reading or prayer. ~ Billy Graham
Christian Thought quotes by Billy Graham
Love is a Christian word, Anjin-san. Love is a Christian thought, a Christian ideal. We have no word for 'love' as I understand you to mean it. Duty, loyalty, honor, respect, desire, those words and thoughts are what we have, all that we need. ~ James Clavell
Christian Thought quotes by James Clavell
Simply to render oneself able to understand what other Christian thinkers have themselves come to understand and to more or less felicitously communicate requires that one's mind not be a blank slate but already properly formed, disciplined, and exercised. ~ Gregory B. Sadler
Christian Thought quotes by Gregory B. Sadler
For centuries the leaders of Christian thought spoke of women as a necessary evil, and the greatest saints of the Church are those who despise women the most. ~ Annie Besant
Christian Thought quotes by Annie Besant
The highest development was in the Egyptian and Cabalistic systems, and it was blended with Christian thought in the schools of the Neo-Platonists and the Gnostics ... Its studies were only kept alive during the Dark Ages among the Jews who were the chief exponents of its Cabalistic aspect ... and it is still alive today. ~ Dion Fortune
Christian Thought quotes by Dion Fortune
The theological meaning of events in history is always filled with ambiguity, whether their significance is supported by centuries of tradition or is fresh in the minds of contemporaries. John, however, saw no such ambiguity. To him the meaning of the destruction of the temple was patent, demonstrable, indubitable. Yet his interpretation ignored one signifiant fact - the continuing existence of Jewish communities that, by their very way of life, demonstrated that their loss of the temple and the city of Jerusalem had not severed the covenant with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And within his own congregation there were Christians who lived as though the Law of Moses were still in force. Though these Judaizers were a minority, they were living testimony that the Jewish way of life had not lost its legitimacy. For reasons discussed in this book, John could take seriously neither the way of life of the Jews nor the claims of the Judaizers among the Christians. He saw no way to acknowledge the ongoing reality of Israel without calling into question the truth of the Christian faith. That John's view won out is significant for the later history of Christianity for it has shaped all Christian thought about Judaism since his time; but that is no reason why it should be our own view. ~ Robert L. Wilken
Christian Thought quotes by Robert L. Wilken
Justification has so dominated the landscape of Christian thought that adoption has been marginalized. We don't hear much about our adoption at all. We hear a lot about forgiveness, but very little about the staggering reality of our inclusion in Jesus' relationship with his Father in the Spirit. ~ C. Baxter Kruger
Christian Thought quotes by C. Baxter Kruger
Bran's father sat solemnly on his horse, long brown hair stirring in the wind. His closely trimmed beard was shot with white, making him look older than his thirty-five years. He had a grim cast to his grey eyes this day, and he seemed not at all the man who would sit before the fire in the evening and talk softly of the age of heroes and the children of the forest. He had taken off Father's face, Bran thought, and donned the face of Lord Stark of Winterfell. There ~ George R R Martin
Christian Thought quotes by George R R Martin
I know now that I can make it through more than I thought, with less than I thought. I know better than to believe that the changes are over, and I know better than to believe the next ones will be easier, but I've learned the hard way that change is one of God's greatest gifts and one of his most useful tools. ~ Shauna Niequist
Christian Thought quotes by Shauna Niequist
The child would ask him questions about the world that for him was not even a memory. He thought hard how to answer. There is no past. ~ Cormac McCarthy
Christian Thought quotes by Cormac McCarthy
Nothing breaks down barriers and preconceived ideas about 'Christians and Christianity' more than when we treat people the way Jesus treated His enemies. ~ Chip Ingram
Christian Thought quotes by Chip Ingram
his eyes, he thought that in a few hours he, Lucrecia, and Fonchito would be crossing the skies, leaving behind the thick clouds ~ Mario Vargas-Llosa
Christian Thought quotes by Mario Vargas-Llosa
Everyone who ever changed the world in their own way, everyone who ever accomplished huge dreams had to, at one point in their lives, make the decision to stop caring completely about what others thought, and just go for it. It's in the ENTHUSIASM group that we become truly free. We no longer live our lives for others, but fully for ourselves. We understand that we will benefit the world much more by focusing on our own joy, on living our own big dreams and by inspiring others to their own full empowerment, than by keeping ourselves small. ~ Melody Fletcher
Christian Thought quotes by Melody Fletcher
But the whole thing, after all, may be put very simply. I believe that it is better to tell the truth than to lie. I believe that it is better to be free than to be a slave. And I believe that it is better to know than be ignorant. ~ H.L. Mencken
Christian Thought quotes by H.L. Mencken
Western society has many flaws, and it is good for an educated person to have thought some of these through, even at the expense of losing a lecture or two to tear gas. ~ Robert B. Laughlin
Christian Thought quotes by Robert B. Laughlin
I never thought I'd be on the cover of the 'Atlanta Journal' unless I killed someone. ~ Chris Robinson
Christian Thought quotes by Chris Robinson
The so-called liberals of today have the very popular idea that freedom of speech, of thought, of the press, freedom of religion, freedom from imprisonment without trial-that all these freedoms can be preserved in the absence of what is called economic freedom. They do not realize that, in a system where there is no market, where the government directs everything, all those other freedoms are illusory, even if they are made into laws and written up in constitutions. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Christian Thought quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
But Marcus Aurelius knows that what the heart is full of, the man will do. 'Such as thy thoughts and ordinary cogitations are,' he says, 'such will thy mind be in time.' And every page of the book shows us that he knew thought was sure to issue in act. He drills his soul, as it were, in right principles, that when the time comes, it may be guided by them. To wait until the emergency is to be too late. ~ Marcus Aurelius
Christian Thought quotes by Marcus Aurelius
With that we have articulated a basic criticism of the most grandiose of all human attempts to advance toward the divine
by way of the church. Christianity conceals within itself a germ hostile to the church. It is far too easy for us to base our claims to God on our own Christian religiosity and our church commitment, and in so doing utterly to misunderstand and distort the Christian idea. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Christian Thought quotes by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
It is only kindness and love, which can change the human heart. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Thought quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
They thought we were going to hurt the game, but we just wanted to help ourselves, because the players needed to get together to protect their interests. ~ Ted Lindsay
Christian Thought quotes by Ted Lindsay
Anorexia and bulimia seem to be getting much more common in boys, men, and women of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds; they are also becoming more common in racial groups previously thought to be impervious to the problem. ~ Marya Hornbacher
Christian Thought quotes by Marya Hornbacher
The Indian philosopher J. Krishnamurti once remarked that observing without evaluating is the highest form of human intelligence. When I first read this statement, the thought, 'What nonsense!' shot through my mind before I realized that I had just made an evaluation. ~ Marshall B. Rosenberg
Christian Thought quotes by Marshall B. Rosenberg
I thought a forest was made up entirely of trees, but now I know that the foundation lies below ground, in the fungi. ~ Derrick Jensen
Christian Thought quotes by Derrick Jensen
A school superintendent once told me that most educators define "a Christian teacher" as strictly in terms of personal behavior: things like setting a good example and showing concern for the students. Almost none define it in terms of conveying a biblical worldview on the subjects they teach, whether literature, science, social studies, or the arts.
In other words, they are concerned about being a Christian *in* their work, but they don't think in terms of having a biblical framework *on* the work itself. ~ Nancy Pearcey
Christian Thought quotes by Nancy Pearcey
I subscribe to the thought that it doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. What matters is what works. ~ Tony Curl
Christian Thought quotes by Tony Curl
'The war in Iraq - if Osama was a Christian - it's the Christmas present he never would have expected. ~ Michael Scheuer
Christian Thought quotes by Michael Scheuer
There are a lot of products still to be discovered in the world and experimentation, for example with seafood and fish. There are thousands of products that we're not eating right now that maybe will be cultivated in a good agriculture situation, a sustainable, ecological way. Maybe there will be textures or flavors we hadn't even thought of. In the Amazon there are 400 fruits that are not cultivated right now. They're just incredible fruits. Textures, tastes that we don't know right now. ~ Ferran Adria
Christian Thought quotes by Ferran Adria
To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world..."

But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life . I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the colour of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat..." The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time. "Please, tame me!" he said. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Christian Thought quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Walt Disney was a story man, and he knew that we were thinking story. That's why he dug us so much and he hired us to work for him. We always thought about the story. That was more important than any words and any music. That's all it's about. ~ Richard M. Sherman
Christian Thought quotes by Richard M. Sherman
I had a smell in my nose that just wouldn't go away, and I hated it. It was coating my lungs inside, I thought, and I'd spend the rest of my life breathing it in and breathing it out. The odor was composed of burning building materials, scorched bodies, and disintegrating vampires. It was the smell of hatred. ~ Charlaine Harris
Christian Thought quotes by Charlaine Harris
Who said you weren't good enough? If it was you then pack up that thought and send it to Mars. If it wasn't you then pack up that thought and send it back to that person. ~ Diana Jaber
Christian Thought quotes by Diana Jaber
You ought to travel on your own path. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Christian Thought quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
At the end of the 1960s, I was part of the downtown theatrical movement in New York that was making work in alleyways, garages, gyms, churches, non-traditional spaces. The idea was to get away from the illusion of the conventional theatre. But then I thought, what's wrong with illusion? ~ Robert Wilson
Christian Thought quotes by Robert Wilson
I certainly do believe that a lot of comedy comes from awkwardness and embarrassment - pointing out the ways things are uncomfortable. Definitely the stuff that interests me. I don't necessarily think that comedy comes from a dark place, like you have to be a strung-out heroin addict. But I don't think it comes from happiness, that's for sure. It comes from frustration and suppressed rage, and wishing the world were different. ~ Christian Finnegan
Christian Thought quotes by Christian Finnegan
Our pride keeps us from breaking our pride. Our pride tells us we don't have pride issues. ~ Heather Bixler
Christian Thought quotes by Heather Bixler
Every morning," he said softly, his breath caressing her cheek. "You were my only thought." He tilted closer. "Every night, you were my only thought." His lips brushed her cheekbone. "Every moment of every day, you were my only thought. ~ Erica Ridley
Christian Thought quotes by Erica Ridley
I admire the person who can write it right off. Mencken once said that a person who thinks clearly can write well. But I don't think clearly
too many thoughts bump into one another. Trains of thought run on a track of the Central Nervous System
the New York Central Nervous System, to make it worse. ~ James Thurber
Christian Thought quotes by James Thurber
Somebody asked me earlier if I thought it was really important to tell stories about women's struggles. And I said yes, but at the same time, it's also important to tell stories about women's triumphs, women being slackers, women being criminals, women being heroes. ~ Diablo Cody
Christian Thought quotes by Diablo Cody
They thought back on the tales that the soldier had told. They remembered Hazel, the gentle Bethlehem donkey, who used the last of her strength helping those who needed her. They remembered the donkey who stood on the mountain and accepted suffering so that others would not know pain. They remembered the donkey with a hundred names, the sturdy friend of Jack who proved that the most humble being can have the most courageous heart. They gazed at the soldier, who said, 'I fear that John will be sorry he gave the silver donkey to me. The silver donkey belongs to the trustworthy and the brave. ~ Sonya Hartnett
Christian Thought quotes by Sonya Hartnett
You must keep your senses trained to the presence of new or repeat thought patterns, not allowing them eight-lane freedom to run up and down inside your head without being pulled over for closer inspection. Staying renewed in mind means keeping the floodlights on and the alarm systems triggered, ever on the watch for intruders into your mental living space. ~ Frank Page
Christian Thought quotes by Frank Page
Because we call ourselves Christians, our actions need to reflect Christ, ~ Clayton Kershaw
Christian Thought quotes by Clayton Kershaw
She never wants to get to the point where she looks forward to hearing from someone. Once you look forward to something, you're inevitably let down and nothing can stay the same so she'd rather expect nothing at all and just be surprised that she was thought of at all. ~ Donna Lynn Hope
Christian Thought quotes by Donna Lynn Hope
As Estha stirred the thick jam he thought Two Thoughts and the Two Thoughts he thought were these:
a) Anything can happen to anyone.
and
b) It is best to be prepared. ~ Arundhati Roy
Christian Thought quotes by Arundhati Roy
I was an actor in college and it was much easier than being a waiter. I thought it was fun to get paid. People were not exactly surprised to see me going in the field. ~ Dom Irrera
Christian Thought quotes by Dom Irrera
And they would go not with an eye to gaining converts but with an eye to meeting need. The conversions would take care of themselves. ~ David Wilkerson
Christian Thought quotes by David Wilkerson
Bollywood stars are versatile; they not only act, but each one has the dance skills of John Travolta in 'Saturday Night Fever.' ~ Christian Louboutin
Christian Thought quotes by Christian Louboutin
A sound discretion is not so much indicated by never making a mistake as by never repeating it. ~ Christian Nestell Bovee
Christian Thought quotes by Christian Nestell Bovee
I could use you, training the Castle guards," offered the Reeve, "but I have to warn you that the last man to hold the post of captain quit."
The guard's eyebrows rose. "I wouldn't have thought that Castle guards would be that difficult."
"They're not," returned Kerim. "My lady mother, however is. ~ Patricia Briggs
Christian Thought quotes by Patricia Briggs
If you are longing for something more than the hit-and-run relationship cycle, something beautiful and meaningful in your life, then I'm going to lay it on the line. You must let go of the captain's position in your life and trust Him. You must give up the little you're hanging on to now to gain something infinitely greater. You must let go of the helm and let Him lead. ~ Eric Ludy
Christian Thought quotes by Eric Ludy
If you're reading this book, there is probably an artist or band whose music you have an intense personal relationship with. I would also guess that this artist or band came into your life during a time when you were highly vulnerable. if this is the case, this artist or band might be the closest thing you had to a confidant. in fact, he, she, or it was better than a confidant, because his/her/its music articulated your own thoughts and feeling better than you ever could. This music elevated the raw materials of your life to the heights of art and poetry. It made you feel as if your personal experience was grander and more meaningful than it might otherwise have been. And naturally you attributed whatever that music was doing to your heart and brain to the people who made the music, and you came to believe that the qualities of the music were also true of the music's creators. "If this music understands me, then the people behind the music must also understand me," goes this line of thought. ~ Steven Hyden
Christian Thought quotes by Steven Hyden
I thought, it's a shame that we have to live, but it's a tragedy that we get to live only one life, because if I'd had two lives, I would have spent one of them with her. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Christian Thought quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
Picking you to have your brain plucked out of your body is not my idea of a favor, some part of my brain said. Good point, brain, I thought, ignoring that I was now speaking to myself. ~ John Scalzi
Christian Thought quotes by John Scalzi
She had done her residency at LA County Hospital, where the CT machines were so old she had to mark off the body parts for scanning with paper clips. She thought Baghdad hospitals might be like that. ~ Leslie Cockburn
