How strong these people were to leave such a lasting impression. ~ Rudolfo Anaya
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Rudolfo Anaya
We are a diverse country, but we are one country. And we are at our best when we come together as Americans, not despite our differences, but in celebration of them. ~ Jared Polis
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Jared Polis
Sannyas is celebration of life, and sin is natural: natural in the sense that you are unconscious - what else can you do? In unconsciousness, sin is bound to happen. Sin simply means that you don't know what you are doing, you are unaware, so whatsoever you do goes wrong. But to recognize that "I am a sinner" is the beginning of a great pilgrimage. To recognize that "I am a sinner" is the beginning of real virtue. To see that "I am ignorant" is the first glimpse of wisdom. ~ Rajneesh
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Rajneesh
My blog is a celebration of the unexpected, settled, happy life I find myself living in Portland, Maine, at the ripe old age of fifty with someone I deeply love and am very happy with. That's part of why I started the blog. ~ Kate Christensen
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Kate Christensen
Too often scholars have thought and even suggested that what happened during and after Constantine was that the church sought to replace the pagan temples, priests, and sacrifices with their own. This is at best a half truth. If this had been primarily what was going on, we would have expected to find priestesses showing up in the mainstream church in and after the time of Constantine, since there were certainly priestesses in the pagan temples. But this we do not find in the historical record. This is because the church of that period was not merely trying to supplant pagan religion with Christian religion, though some of that was going on. More to the point, there was a rising tide of anti-Judaism, and one of its manifestations was this Old Testament hermeneutic. The Torah had been claimed as the church's book, Jews were being ostracized and then later ghettoized, and a hermeneutic of ministry was being adopted which co-opted the Old Testament for church use when it came to priests, temples, and sacrifices, and indeed sacraments in general. Thus ironically enough while the structure of the ecclesial church was becoming more Old Testamental, the church hierarchy was not only becoming less tolerant of Jews, it was forgetting altogether the Jewish character of Jesus' ministry and his modifications of the Passover that led to the Lord's Supper celebration of the early church in the first place. ~ Ben Witherington III
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Ben Witherington III
True giving is a thoroughly joyous thing to do. We experience happiness when we form the intention to give, in the actual act of giving, and in the recollection of the fact that we have given. Generosity is a celebration. When we give something to someone we feel connected to them, and our commitment to the path of peace and awareness deepens. ~ Sharon Salzberg
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Sharon Salzberg
In alien lands I keep the body
Of ancient native rites and things:
I gladly free a little birdie
At celebration of the spring.
I'm now free for consolation,
And thankful to almighty Lord:
At least, to one of his creations
I've given freedom in this world! ~ Alexander Pushkin
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Alexander Pushkin
Petre's commitment to Roman Catholicism combined with her openness to mental and moral subjectivism formed a rare alchemy among early twentieth-century Catholics. Her exposure to thinkers like Nietzsche did not strip her of her faith. She argued that despite Nietzsche's professed atheism, his life and thought offered much for Catholics to admire. His was a 'strenuous,' 'suffering,' 'unselfish' 'life militant' marked by 'purity, integrity, [and] utter unworldliness.' Despite being the sweetheart of libertine artists and writers, Nietzsche criticized the decadence and pessimism of modern aesthetics. Likewise, the goal of his celebration of free will and his critique of sin was not an orgiastic 'self-abandonment, but ... strong self-possession; a mastering of one's own life and conduct' and a recognition that true contrition is not legislated from without but cultivated from within a deep reverence for the 'mysterious laws of our being.' Petre insisted that in Nietzsche, Catholics could find a fellow seeker of moral strenuousness: 'There is to be here no dilettantism, but sheer hard work. ~ Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen
If you take Christmas to heart and get past the anxieties in arranging for gifts and parties, you will rediscover yourself every year at this time and experience a birth in yourself, just like the one so beautifully described in the Gospel stories. It will be a celebration of both the birth of Jesus and the birth of your soul ~ Thomas Moore
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Thomas Moore
But there is a difference here: When Jewish children are murdered, Arabs celebrate the deed. The death of an Arab child is no cause for celebration in Israel. ~ Theodore Bikel
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Theodore Bikel
What we witness at the fea is not just a celebration of the multiplicity of modernities but also, and more importantly, a critical commentary on local structures of inequality that take for granted that both tradition and modernity are the prerogatives of the high ranking and wealthy. ~ Niko Besnier
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Niko Besnier
Every year we get together and throw a big feast for the winter solstice, a festival in which every game and every confectionary you could possibly imagine suddenly become a reality. The children put on a play about the Black Bear and the Gray Bear, an age-old story that relates the Gray Bear's trip to eternity through the freezing white snow of the north. At the very end of the celebration the men and the women perform the warm dance, a giant, joyful circle dance the Shoshone invented thousands of years ago in order to send blessings to the wild animals who ~ Rose Christo
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Rose Christo
Since in fact liturgical traditions, vestments, church vessels, etc., were immediately removed wherever Calvinism infiltrated or Reformed ideas even gained influence in the church's polity, the reaction which it caused in Lutheran areas was a conscious propensity for ceremonies. Henceforth, therefore, the celebration of an emphatically liturgical service was among the visible signs by which the Lutheran character of confession was demonstrated outwardly. ~ Ernst Walter Zeeden
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Ernst Walter Zeeden
The artist's work, it is sometimes said, is to celebrate. But really that is not so; it is to express wonder. And something terrible resides at the heart of wonder. Celebration is social, amenable. Wonder has a chaotic splendor. ~ Patricia Hampl
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Patricia Hampl
I believe dance is a manifestation and celebration of the tenacity of the human spirit ~ Robert Battle
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Robert Battle
in 3000 b.c....in spain, france, the british isles and old europe, the lives of people centered on nature and motherhood. they honored mother nature, mother earth and mother creator. women were revered as the givers of life. as creators, they were thought to be connected to diety. statues of the goddesses of these early people were of full-breasted women with bodies clearly depicting the ballooning abdomen of women about to give birth. these primal people regarded birthing as the highest manifestation of nature. when a woman gave birth, everyone gathered around her in the temple for the "celebration of life." birthing was a religious rite, and not at all the painful ordeal it came to be years later. ~ Marie F. Mongan
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Marie F. Mongan
As an artist, i feel lucky to have been given the gift of creativity so that i may share my vision of a better world. I will never forget what it was like to be poor and that is why it is so important to me that my work be accessible to all people. For me, art can reflect the celebration of the simple and good things in life. This is the most important to me. ~ Romero Britto
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Romero Britto
Therefore, I think that in the celebration of the 50 years of the present reign, there must be research on the changes that the country has undergone, and in the future, it could be used as a lesson for our future actions. ~ Bhumibol Adulyadej
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Bhumibol Adulyadej
Long ago, when faeries and men still wandered the earth as brothers, the MacLeod chief fell in love with a beautiful faery woman. They had no sooner married and borne a child when she was summoned to return to her people. Husband and wife said a tearful goodbye and parted ways at Fairy Bridge, which you can still visit today. Despite the grieving chief, a celebration was held to honor the birth of the newborn boy, the next great chief of the MacLeods. In all the excitement of the celebration, the baby boy was left in his cradle and the blanket slipped off. In the cold Highland night he began to cry. The baby's cry tore at his mother, even in another dimension, and so she went to him, wrapping him in her shawl. When the nursemaid arrived, she found the young chief in the arms of his mother, and the faery woman gave her a song she insisted must be sung to the little boy each night. The song became known as "The Dunvegan Cradle Song," and it has been sung to little chieflings ever since. The shawl, too, she left as a gift: if the clan were ever in dire need, all they would have to do was wave the flag she'd wrapped around her son, and the faery people would come to their aid. Use the gift wisely, she instructed. The magic of the flag will work three times and no more.
As I stood there in Dunvegan Castle, gazing at the Fairy Flag beneath its layers of protective glass, it was hard to imagine the history behind it. The fabric was dated somewhere between the fourth and seventh ~ Signe Pike
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Signe Pike
It's quite funny in that I once won Rear of the Year at my school! I was about 17 in the sixth form and we used to have an end of year celebration and give out different awards. I even got a little trophy! ~ Jessica Ennis
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Jessica Ennis
A cult classic ... both a celebration of the unlimited potential of the comic book form, and a perfect melding of inspiring, iconoclastic imaginations. ~ Jim Jarmusch
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Jim Jarmusch
The Khanum?" Arland coughed. The last sip of tea must've gone wrong.
"Are you unwell?" Dagorkun inquired.
"Healthy as a krahr," Arland said.
"That's such a relief. I would hate for some illness to interfere and spoil the grand celebration I planned when I send you to your afterlife. ~ Ilona Andrews
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Ilona Andrews
It was a mission of celebration: never had two Mexican-Americans flown up in space on the same mission, and never did burritos shine so brightly. ~ Gustavo Arellano
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Gustavo Arellano
I am told that today rather more than 60 per cent of the men who go to university go on a Government grant. This is a new class that has entered upon the scene. It is the white-collar proletariat. They do not go to university to acquire culture but to get a job, and when they have got one, scamp it. They have no manners and are woefully unable to deal with any social predicament. Their idea of a celebration is to go to a public house and drink six beers. They are mean, malicious and envious . They are scum. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I embrace my body, and I embrace everything about myself. Coming full circle is a celebration of freedom and happiness because that's what [my new album] 'Lotus' is representing. I'm embracing everything that I've grown to be and learned to be. ~ Christina Aguilera
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Christina Aguilera
Soon it was time for us to leave; the clock had struck midnight, and we had miles to go before we slept. After throwing my bouquet and saying good-byes, Marlboro Man and I ran through the doors of the club and climbed into the back of a smoky black limousine--the vehicle that would take us to the big city miles away, where we'd stay before flying to Australia the next day. As we pulled away from the waving, birdseed-throwing crowd at the front door of the club, we immediately settled into each other's arms, melting into a puddle of white silk and black boots and sleepy, unbridled romance.
It was all so new. New dress…new love…a new country--Australia--that neither of us had ever seen. A new life together. A new life for me. New crystal, silver, china. A newly renovated, tiny cowboy house that would be our little house on the prairie when we returned from our honeymoon.
A new husband. My husband. I wanted to repeat it over and over again, wanted to shout it to the heavens. But I couldn't speak. I was busy. Passion had taken over--a beast had been unleashed. Sleep deprived and exhausted from the celebration of the previous week, once inside the sanctity of the limousine, we were utterly powerless to stop it…and we let it fly. It was this same passion that had gotten us through the early stages of our relationship, and, ultimately, through the choice to wave good-bye to any life I'd ever imagined for myself. To become a part of Marlboro Man's life instead. It was this ~ Ree Drummond
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Ree Drummond
A ceremony honoring the memory of BAIL ORGANA has drawn the Senate together in rare harmony. It is a day of celebration, but even now, the divisions among the worlds of the galaxy are growing wider ... . ~ Claudia Gray
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Claudia Gray
Women find themselves arguing futilely that 'just because' I go out to work/smoke/drink/wear unorthodox clothes/enjoy male company - that doesn't make me a whore. Is there any comparable good/bad imagery for men? Of course not. The feminist response to being called whores or chhinaal should not be to protest fruitlessly, 'We are not whores!' but to turn the insult around and ask, 'What makes you think this is an insult? We refuse the terms of this insult.' What if all women were to say we are 'loose' - we are not tightly controlled - and if that makes us whores, then we are all whores. If we are all bad women, then patriarchy had better watch out. Or, as Archana Verma puts it: 'One day, I will hear hurled at me the words, loose woman, chhinaal, prostitute … And I will turn around and say, "Thank you for the compliment". That day will come. And it will be a day of feminist celebration. ~ Nivedita Menon
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Nivedita Menon
Celebration is without any cause. Celebration is simply because we are. We are made out of the stuff called celebration. That's our natural state - to celebrate - as natural as it is for the trees to bloom, for birds to sing, for rivers to flow to the ocean. Celebration is a natural state. ~ Rajneesh
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Rajneesh
Moshing, for most of them, is a celebration of the moment, of the sad fact that it is> only a moment. ~ Joe Ambrose
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Joe Ambrose
She who reconciles the ill-matched threads
Of her life, and weaves them gratefully
Into a single cloth –
It's she who drives the loudmouths from the hall
And clears it for a different celebration. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
The two Mast Houses just within the Victory Gate of Portsmouth Dockyard are raised above the water on piloti. They are structures of remarkable grace, clinker-built, painted the palest green. They are vast, as they needed to be. Their survival is an industrial site devoted for a century to the servicing of mastless vessels is a matter for celebration. The use of which the more southerly is put is a matter for obloquy: the Mary Rose Shop is a repository of tawdry, insipid tat. It's the sort of stuff to make me wince- a dismal, timid inventory of mediocrity. Bad taste is forgivable. It's no taste which is so disheartening. ~ Jonathan Meades
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Jonathan Meades
The Beats are crucial to an understanding of America's cultural revolution not least because in their lives, their proclamations, and (for lack of a more accurate term) their 'work' they anticipated so many of the pathologies of the Sixties and Seventies. Their programmatic anti-Americanism, their avid celebration of drug abuse, their squalid, promiscuous sex lives, their pseudo-spirituality, their attack on rationality and their degradation of intellectual standards, their aggressive narcissism and juvenile political posturing: in all this and more, the Beats were every bit as 'advanced' as any Sixties radical. ~ Roger Kimball
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Roger Kimball
The celebration of homeownership seems to be part of a countermovement against popular owning of shares in corporations. ~ Edmund Phelps
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Edmund Phelps
It is so rightly said that you only live once, but if you live it right, once is enough. Let you remind yourself that you are not only one in billions of people, but you are once in a lifetime kind of person. Let you leave no kind word unsaid, leave no good deed undone & never miss a single opportunity of celebration, occasion or possibility of feeling good or making your life & your world more beautiful. Let you stop sitting on fence waiting for your turn foolishly or just hanging on to the handrails. Let you opt for the joyful ride of your life everyday & throw as much paint as you can on the canvas of your life making it more irresistible, graceful & meaningful. Let you realize that any time spent on being unhappy, detesting or loathing is wasted. Stay Blessed & Keep Being Awesome! ~ Rajesh Goyal
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Rajesh Goyal
A society which discards those who are weak and non-productive risks exaggerating the development of reason, organisation, aggression and the desire to dominate. It becomes a society without a heart, without kindness - a rational and sad society, lacking celebration, divided within itself and given to competition, rivalry and, finally, violence. ~ Jean Vanier
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Jean Vanier
Celebration of the new over the old easily translates into a celebration of young over the old, of young people over old people. The cult of youth, the celebration of youth for youth's sake s more pervasive in the United States than any other culture I have visited . . . When the culture values youth over maturity, the authority of parents is undermined. ~ Leonard Sax
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Leonard Sax
Celebration is a kind of food we all need in our lives, and each individual brings a special recipe or offering, so that together we will make a great feast. Celebration is a human need that we must not, and can not, deny. It is richer and fuller when many work and then celebrate together. ~ Corita Kent
A Celebration Of Grandfathers quotes by Corita Kent
While on the one hand," he said, "our most prominent scientists, the inexhaustible heroes of this perennial confusion, have finally and somewhat unfortunately extricated themselves from the metaphor of godhead, they have immediately fallen into the trap of regarding this oppressive history as some kind of triumphant march, a supernatural progress following, what they call, the victory of 'will and intellect', and though, as you know, I am no longer capable of being the least surprised by this, I must confess to you I still cannot understand why it should be the cause of such universal celebration for them that we have climbed out of the trees. Do they think it's good like this? I find nothing amusing in it. Furthermore it doesn't fit us properly: you only have to consider how long, even after thousands of years of practice, we can keep going on two legs. Half a day, my dear friend, and we shouldn't forget it. ~ Laszlo Krasznahorkai
