Money has, as we know, no value in itself. It is a convenient yardstick for a large number of material values. But the health and life of an individual as well as the health of a nation cannot be measured by that yardstick. If we, entrusted with protecting and defending the health of the population, give in to a salesman's scale of values we are lost. ~ Karl Evang
Yardstick quotes by Karl Evang
A gaping chasm separates what we try to be aware of and what we actually are aware of. And I don't care how long your yardstick is, there's no measuring that drop. What I can set down here in writing only amounts to a catalog. Not a novel, not literature, not even art. Just a notebook with a line ruled down the center. And maybe a lesson or two in it somewhere. ~ Haruki Murakami
Yardstick quotes by Haruki Murakami
Our friends cannot understand why we make this voyage. They shudder, and moan, and raise their hands. No amount of explanation can make them comprehend that we are moving along the line of least resistance; that it is easier for us to go down to the sea in a small ship than to remain on dry land, just as it is easier for them to remain on dry land than to go down to the sea in the small ship. This state of mind comes of an undue prominence of the ego. They cannot get away from themselves. They cannot come out of themselves long enough to see that their line of least resistance is not necessarily everybody else's line of least resistance. They make of their own bundle of desires, likes, and dislikes a yardstick wherewith to measure the desires, likes, and dislikes of all creatures. This is unfair. I tell them so. But they cannot get away from their own miserable egos long enough to hear me. They think I am crazy. In return, I am sympathetic. It is a state of mind familiar to me. We are all prone to think there is something wrong with the mental processes of the man who disagrees with us. ~ Jack London
Yardstick quotes by Jack London
We select such investments on a long-term basis, weighing the same factors as would be involved in the purchase of 100% of an operating business: (1) favorable long-term economic characteristics; (2) competent and honest management; (3) purchase price attractive when measured against the yardstick of value to a private owner; and (4) an industry with which we are familiar and whose long-term business characteristics we feel competent to judge. ~ Warren Buffett
Yardstick quotes by Warren Buffett
I love that perhaps we don't see the things that are there because we have no yardstick to see things by, to compare them. ~ Nicolas Roeg
Yardstick quotes by Nicolas Roeg
Self-correction makes me check the ruler of my life against the yardstick of my inner voice. I acknowledge when I don't measure up. Self-correction is an ongoing process. If done often enough, I can stop myself from straying off the path. ~ Stella Payton
Yardstick quotes by Stella Payton
I think I need to spend some time with safari but what arrests my attention are salient, sadomasochism, saccadic, and salad days. I think I will go learn more about coral only to learn a lot more about corollary and counterturn and coffin nail. I go from magnificence to means to marquee to maniac to distyle, ductile, hindsight, shell game, veronica, yardstick, ball field, magpie, variegated, and close shave. ~ Dara Wier
Yardstick quotes by Dara Wier
I didn't want to be the yardstick of righteousness; I was too lacking. ~ Amy Harmon
Yardstick quotes by Amy Harmon
When people photograph an object, they often put a pack of cigarettes next to it to give the viewer a sense of the object's actual size, but the pack of cigarettes next to the images in my memory expanded and contracted, depending on my mood at the time. Like the objects and events in constant flux, or perhaps in opposition to them, what should have been a fixed yardstick inside the framework of my memory seemed instead to be in perpetual motion. ~ Haruki Murakami
Yardstick quotes by Haruki Murakami
The best yardstick for our progress is not other people, but ourselves. Am I better than I was yesterday? This is the only question worth asking. As long as you go to bed at night a better practitioner than the one who woke up that morning, you have succeeded. Your worth should have nothing to do with how your progress stacks up relative to another. ~ Chris Matakas
Yardstick quotes by Chris Matakas
Hope, ... which whispered from Pandora's box after all the other plagues and sorrows had escaped, is the best and last of all things. Without it, there is only time. And time pushes at our backs like a centrifuge, forcing outward and away, until it nudges us into oblivion ... It's a law of motion, a fact of physics ... , no different from the stages of white dwarves and red giants. Like all things in the universe, we are destined from birth to diverge. Time is simply the yardstick of our separation. If we are particles in a sea of distance, exploded from an original whole, then there is a science to our solitude. We are lonely in proportion to our years. ~ Ian Caldwell
Yardstick quotes by Ian Caldwell
We humans can spend our whole lives pondering the meaning of 'good' and 'evil,' but we will never be able to figure it out. The only thing that human beings can do is come up with a yardstick by which to measure good and evil. ~ Soko Morinaga
Yardstick quotes by Soko Morinaga
I have observed a phenomena about women in this community and is how quick they are able to form opinions and "ideas" about other women without any knowledge of their character and just by virtue of some preconceived notion often fueled by envy, bias and downright bad mind which in many cases have no basis or truth to it.i hate when biotches try to use their lackluster lives as a yardstick for mine ... ~ Crystal Evans
Yardstick quotes by Crystal Evans
Success should be measured by the yardstick of happiness; by your ability to remain in peaceful harmony with cosmic laws. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Yardstick quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
My yardstick is how somebody treats me. ~ Truman Capote
Yardstick quotes by Truman Capote
Now, brethren, do not expect perfection in your choice of a mate. Do not be so particular that you overlook her most important qualities of having a strong testimony, living the principles of the gospel, loving home, wanting to be a mother in Zion, and supporting you in your priesthood responsibilities.
Of course, she should be attractive to you ...
And one good yardstick as to whether a person might be the right one for you is this: in her presence, do you think your noblest thoughts, do you aspire to your finest deeds, do you wish you were better than you are? ~ Ezra Taft Benson
Yardstick quotes by Ezra Taft Benson
Vodka was a liquid cultural yardstick, an eighty-proof vehicle of escape from the socialist daily grind. ~ Anya Von Bremzen
Yardstick quotes by Anya Von Bremzen
How strange it is, Anna. Yesterday, I have filed in my mind as a good day, notwithstanding it was filled with mortal illness and the grieving of the recently bereft. Yet it is a good day, for the simple fact that no one died upon it. We are brought to a sorry state, that we measure what is good by such a shortened yardstick. ~ Geraldine Brooks
Yardstick quotes by Geraldine Brooks
The giver measures his gift with one yardstick, and the receiver measures it with another. ~ Laura Huxley
Yardstick quotes by Laura Huxley
Even terror needs a yardstick, and surely the yardstick for the unknown is the known? ~ Carsten Jensen
Yardstick quotes by Carsten Jensen
The Muslims of recent times had fallen very short indeed of the ideals of their faith, ... nothing could be more erroneous than to measure the potentialities of Muhammad's message by the yardstick of present-day Muslim life and thought - just as he [Shaykh Mustafa al-Maraghi] said, 'it would be erroneous to see in the Christians' unloving behavior toward one another a refutation of Christ's message of love ... ' ~ Muhammad Asad
Yardstick quotes by Muhammad Asad
For Castro, freedom starts with education. And if literacy alone were the yardstick, Cuba would rank as one of the freest nations on Earth. The literacy rate is 96 percent. ~ Barbara Walters
Yardstick quotes by Barbara Walters
For us there still exists a serene, unfathomable abyss in which God and the spirits dwell. The soul, in moments of ecstasy, often soars across it; poetry unveils it at times with childlike naivete; but science with its hammer and yardstick is often perched at the rim and may, in many cases, contribute nothing at all. ~ Adalbert Stifter
Yardstick quotes by Adalbert Stifter
We measure the success of schools not by the kinds of human beings they promote but by whatever increases in reading scores they chalk up. We have allowed quantitative standards, so central to the adult economic system, to become the principal yardstick for our definition of our children's worth. ~ Kenneth Keniston
Yardstick quotes by Kenneth Keniston
Everything we know of horror and dread is connected primarily with war. Stalin's Gulags and Auschwitz were recent gains for evil. History has always been the story of wars and military commanders, and war was, we could say, the yardstick of horror. This is why people muddle the concepts of war and disaster. In Chernobyl, we see all the hallmarks of war: hordes of soldiers, evacuation, abandoned houses. The course of life disrupted. Reports on Chernobyl in the newspapers are thick with the language of war: 'nuclear', 'explosion', 'heroes'. And this makes it harder to appreciate that we now find ourselves on a new page of history. The history of disasters has begun. But people do not want to reflect on that, because they have never thought about it before, preferring to take refuge in the familiar. And in the past. Even the monuments to the Chernobyl heroes look like war memorials. ~ Svetlana Alexievich
Yardstick quotes by Svetlana Alexievich
Without a yardstick sometimes the high points can be taken for granted. ~ Jasper Fforde
Yardstick quotes by Jasper Fforde
Life will never surrender its secrets to a yardstick. ~ Dee Hock
Yardstick quotes by Dee Hock
Monday is the yardstick against which all that is unpleasant is measured. ~ Lou Brutus
Yardstick quotes by Lou Brutus
But our minds are bound to the yardstick of yesterday, today and tomorrow, and with that yardstick we try to inquire into the unknown, to measure that which is not measurable. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
Yardstick quotes by Jiddu Krishnamurti
Up to now in the West none of the apostles of stabilization and petrification has succeeded in wiping out the individuais innate disposition to think and to apply to ali problems the yardstick of reason. This alone, and no more, history and philosophy can assert in dealing with doctrines that claim to know exactly what the future has in store for mankind. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Yardstick quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
As a kid you idolize your parents. You think they're perfect, because they're the yardstick by which you measure the rest of the world, and yourself. Then as a teenager they just piss you off, because you realize that not only are they not perfect, but they may be even a little more screwed up than you. But there's that moment when you realize they're not superheroes, or villains. They're painfully, unforgivably human. The question is, can you forgive them for being human anyway? ~ Neal Shusterman
Yardstick quotes by Neal Shusterman
I have accomplished nothing in the last four and a half years," he lamented - a statement that is only accurate when measured against the yardstick of his former life. ~ Debra Meyerson
Yardstick quotes by Debra Meyerson
If I could measure my life in moments of self-doubt, it would look like yardstick after yardstick of questioning my choices. From what I order for dinner in a restaurant to whether or not I should have a baby... Choose A. Obsess that I should have chosen B instead of A. Why do I always choose the wrong thing? ~ Jennifer Pastiloff
Yardstick quotes by Jennifer Pastiloff
The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one's hand and ask: "Does this spark joy?" If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it. This is not only the simplest but also the most accurate yardstick by which to judge. ~ Marie Kondo
Yardstick quotes by Marie Kondo
Most of us know intuitively that a score on a personality test, a rank on a standardized assessment, a grade point average, or a rating on a performance review doesn't reflect your, or your child's, or your students', or your employees' abilities. Yet the concept of average as a yardstick for measuring individuals has been so thoroughly ingrained in our minds that we rarely question it seriously. ~ Todd Rose
Yardstick quotes by Todd Rose
Our repentance should begin with the fact that we have no longer taken the Word of God seriously and have not come to repentance. We dared to use our own standards and were satisfied when we lived up to them. We are like the Pharisees.
Outwardly we participate in Christian activities, perhaps even enthusiastically...And we think that this is enough. We use our own yardstick.
But God will measure our lives according to His standards, and we shall have no excuse when we appear before His judgment seat, for He has clearly proclaimed His standards in His Word. ~ Basilea Schlink
Yardstick quotes by Basilea Schlink
To complain that man measures God by his own experience is a waste of time; man measures everything by his own experience; he has no other yardstick. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers
Yardstick quotes by Dorothy L. Sayers
Books are still the main yardstick by which I measure true wealth. ~ Tamora Pierce
Yardstick quotes by Tamora Pierce
How can so many (white, male) writers narratively justify restricting the agency of their female characters on the grounds of sexism = authenticity while simultaneously writing male characters with conveniently modern values?

The habit of authors writing Sexism Without Sexists in genre novels is seemingly pathological. Women are stuffed in the fridge under cover of "authenticity" by secondary characters and villains because too many authors flinch from the "authenticity" of sexist male protagonists. Which means the yardstick for "authenticity" in such novels almost always ends up being "how much do the women suffer", instead of - as might also be the case - "how sexist are the heroes".

And this bugs me; because if authors can stretch their imaginations far enough to envisage the presence of modern-minded men in the fake Middle Ages, then why can't they stretch them that little bit further to put in modern-minded women, or modern-minded social values? It strikes me as being extremely convenient that the one universally permitted exception to this species of "authenticity" is one that makes the male heroes look noble while still mandating that the women be downtrodden and in need of rescuing.

-Comment at Staffer's Book Review 4/18/2012 to "Michael J. Sullivan on Character Agency ~ Foz Meadows
Yardstick quotes by Foz Meadows
Having taught economics courses at private vocational schools and universities, I have always had a problem with GNP as a yardstick of prosperity. GNP is improved by increases in questionable activities such as consumption of cigarettes and the production of weapons. Moreover, a substantial increase in car accidents will favorably affect GNP because more funerals, hospital visits, car repairs, and new car purchases will result. ~ Ernie J Zelinski
Yardstick quotes by Ernie J Zelinski
Change is a continuous process. You cannot assess it with the static yardstick of a limited time frame. When a seed is sown into the ground, you cannot immediately see the plant. You have to be patient. With time, it grows into a large tree. And then the flowers bloom, and only then can the fruits be plucked. ~ Mamata Banerjee
Yardstick quotes by Mamata Banerjee
she'd wager that they weren't single moms who'd had to poke the radiator vents with a yardstick at 3:00 a.m. to prove that there weren't any snakes hiding in the dark tunnels. ~ Jodi Picoult
Yardstick quotes by Jodi Picoult
There is much reading material that is available which is either time-wasting or corrupting. The best yardstick to use in discerning the worth of true knowledge and learning is to go first and foremost to the words of the Lord's prophets. ~ Ezra Taft Benson
Yardstick quotes by Ezra Taft Benson
A spirit of license makes a man refuse to commit himself to any standards. The right time is the way he sets his watch. The yardstick has the number of inches that he wills it to have. Liberty becomes license, and unbounded license leads to unbounded tyranny. When society reaches this stage, and there is no standard of right and wrong outside of the individual himself, then the individual is defenseless against the onslaught of cruder and more violent men who proclaim their own subjective sense of values. Once my idea of morality is just as good as your idea of morality, then the morality that is going to prevail is the morality that is stronger. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Yardstick quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The philosophers who in their treatises of ethics assigned supreme value to justice and applied the yardstick of justice to ali social institutions were not guilty of such deceit. They did not support selfish group concerns by declaring them alone just, fair, and good, and smear ali dissenters by depicting them as the apologists of unfair causes. They were Platonists who believed that a perennial idea of absolute justice exists and that it is the duty of man to organize ali human institutions in conformity with this ideal. Cognition of justice is imparted to man by an inner voice, i.e., by intuition. The champions of this doctrine did not ask what the consequences of realizing the schemes they called just would be. They silently assumed either that these consequences will be beneficiai or that mankind is bound to put up even with very painful consequences of justice. Still less did these teachers of morality pay attention to the fact that people can and really do disagree with regard to the interpretation of the inner voice and that no method of peacefully settling such disagreements can be found.
Ali these ethical doctrines have failed to comprehend that there is, outside of social bonds and preceding, temporally or logically, the existence of society, nothing to which the epithet "just" can be given. A hypothetical isolated individual must under the pressure of biological competition look upon ali other people as deadly foes. His only concern is to preserve his own lif ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Yardstick quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
The inevitable consequence is that the wealthy become dominant. The wealthy set their own pay or the company boards pay very generously. Each company board, in hiring a new CEO, feels it must pay as much or more than the competitive companies pay their CEO, rather than using the firm's earnings or share price or some other yardstick. In many sectors, especially in the financial sector, there is more collusion than real competition. The wealthy see their pay as describing their worth, and they rely on their wealth and political influence to defeat democratic measures to contain or tax them sufficiently. Democracy is therefore in danger of being destroyed by capitalism. Unless there is higher taxation on wealth and more regulation to promote real competition, democracy is subverted.8 ~ Philip Kotler
Yardstick quotes by Philip Kotler
Critics and fans use the music of their youth as reference points. For years, people seriously wondered who "the next Beatles" were going to be, and classic rock bands were the de facto yardstick for rock quality. ~ Michael Azerrad
Yardstick quotes by Michael Azerrad
I was guided by Allah (God) to give a yardstick to the voting public, particularly Black people as to what will set that candidate apart from others. ~ Louis Farrakhan
Yardstick quotes by Louis Farrakhan
It's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed. Why I love that line, that concept, is that it reminds me that we carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of kindness.
And what does that mean? How is that measured? You can't use a yardstick. It's like I was saying just before: it's not like measuring how much you've grown in a year. It's not exactly quantifiable, is it? ~ R.J. Palacio
Yardstick quotes by R.J. Palacio
In childhood, it's our parents who give us our standards for experience: "Here's an inch," they say. "And this is a foot." And a child says, "Thanks! I can make my own yardstick now." In my family, there wasn't any kind of calibration demonstration. In the chaos, I struggled to figure out anything at all. ~ Heather Sellers
Yardstick quotes by Heather Sellers
The point of the spiritual life is to realize Truth. But you will never understand the spiritual life, or realize Truth, if you measure it by your own yardstick. ~ Dainin Katagiri
Yardstick quotes by Dainin Katagiri
Pick up a yardstick to measure your life against anyone else's, and you've just picked up a stick and beaten up your own soul. ~ Ann Voskamp
Yardstick quotes by Ann Voskamp
Why shouldn't we have laws forbidding pornography and obscenity? Many heroic leaders have tried, but they have stumbled over even the definition of the word "obscenity." If we cannot agree on the length of a foot, it is because we have lost our yardstick. ~ Billy Graham
Yardstick quotes by Billy Graham
Personal dignity is to be measured with the yardstick of one's conscience, not with that of other people's judgement. ~ Fausto Cercignani
Yardstick quotes by Fausto Cercignani
The more successful you become, the longer the yardstick people use to measure you by. ~ Tom Landry
Yardstick quotes by Tom Landry
When nobody around you seems to measure up, it's time to check your yardstick. ~ Bill Lemley
Yardstick quotes by Bill Lemley
We desire more public space for secularism, space that would recognize secularism as a legitimate moral stance. But we simultaneously desire more religious freedom (which is not the same as advocating more religion)... We want the freedom not to be religious and the freedom to be religious differently... We think it's important for Americans to come to terms with th fact that Christianity, and often conservative Christianity, functions as the yardstick and measure of what counts as 'religion' and 'morality' in America... In short, for dissenting views to be heard currently, they have to speak the language of a consensus from which they are already excluded. The price of refusing to speak this common language is either not to be recognized at all or to be recognized only so as to be dismissed as an 'extremist. ~ Janet R. Jakobsen
Yardstick quotes by Janet R. Jakobsen
The ability to analyze others' arguments can also serve as a yardstick for when to withdraw from discussions that will most likely be futile. ~ Ali Almossawi
Yardstick quotes by Ali Almossawi
In retrospect, 'Pulp Fiction' isn't just the template for everything Tarantino has done but the yardstick by which everything else he does is measured one way or another. ~ Steve Erickson
Yardstick quotes by Steve Erickson
I won't tell," he said, his arms holding my waist with amateur stiffness. I smiled, thinking about the lover he'd become and all the things he'd try with me for the very first time. I'd be the sexual yardstick for his whole life: Jack would spend the rest of his days trying but failing to relive the experience of being given everything at a time when he knew nothing. Like a tollbooth in his memory, every partner he'd have afterwards would have to pass through the gate of my comparison, and it would be a losing equation. The numbers could never be as favorable as they were right now, when his naivety would be subtracted from my experience to produce the largest sum of astonishment possible. ~ Alissa Nutting
Yardstick quotes by Alissa Nutting
I didn't ask him why, if I was doing all the Lord asked, I'd just had a heart attack and how come my wife had left me and taken my son away from me a week before Thanksgiving. Why didn't I ask the reverend? I supposed I didn't want to hear him speak about faith and about God acting in mysterious ways. And I didn't know whether or not I would have felt any better when we were done.

But my faith was weak right then, and I doubted it.

Reverend Prior must have sensed that misgivings were clouding my vision. He said, "Don't make the mistake of measuring God's love by the yardstick of your own life, Mr. Purdy."

"What else do I have?" I asked. ~ Stephen White
Yardstick quotes by Stephen White
I agree beauty must be appreciated. I also know not everyone can be the same. What I find unfair, though, is why did the world tell us we're all equal? Why does it behave as if we're living under equal conditions? If someone is to be measured against a yardstick, shouldn't the yardstick be something that can be overcome by effort? No one's appreciated me for anything I've done, I've only been judged on my looks. ~ Min-gyu Park
Yardstick quotes by Min-gyu Park
There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds. If it sounds good it's successful; if it doesn't it has failed. ~ Duke Ellington
Yardstick quotes by Duke Ellington
We cannot measure Divine Providence by the yardstick of human mentality. ~ A.J. Cronin
Yardstick quotes by A.J. Cronin
Originality is what distinguishes art from craft. It is the yardstick of artistic greatness. ~ H. W. Janson
Yardstick quotes by H. W. Janson
There's always the tendency to transform the Church into an ethical agency, and of measuring the Church by the yardstick of social and cultural utility. ~ Karl Lehmann
Yardstick quotes by Karl Lehmann
The predominant yardstick of your government is not human rights but national interests. ~ Breyten Breytenbach
Yardstick quotes by Breyten Breytenbach
It was only in a place like Paris where knowing the books someone loved, whether they followed Lévi-Strauss or Sartre, was the yardstick by which to measure them. ~ Imraan Coovadia
Yardstick quotes by Imraan Coovadia
If you are poor, shun association with him who measures men with the yardstick of riches. ~ Khalil Gibran
Yardstick quotes by Khalil Gibran
Here Mr. Tushman looked up at the audience. "Kinder than is necessary," he repeated. "What a marvelous line, isn't it? Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. How do we know we've been kind? What is being kind, anyway? ~ R.J. Palacio
Yardstick quotes by R.J. Palacio
From the cradle to the grave, you are measured against the ever-present yardstick of the average, judged according to how closely you approximate it or how far you are able to exceed it. ~ Todd Rose
Yardstick quotes by Todd Rose
What we call beauty is perhaps the strength of our feeling of resistance to destructibility. Difficulty of reproduction is the yardstick of the degree of beauty. ~ Kobo Abe
Yardstick quotes by Kobo Abe
The great majority of men use their own short-sighted ideas as a yardstick for measuring the divine omnipotence. ~ Therese Of Lisieux
Yardstick quotes by Therese Of Lisieux
The yardstick that we frequently use to determine if something can be restored is based on the handful of inches that we bring to the process, when God shows up with an infinite amount of miles. ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
Yardstick quotes by Craig D. Lounsbrough
There is one Christian commandment that can be used as a yardstick ... 'Thou shalt not kill.' That is clear enough ... 'Thou shalt not kill' says you shall not kill your neighbor no matter how you feel about him. ~ Seth
Yardstick quotes by Seth
You can measure opportunity with the same yardstick that measures the risk involved. They go together. ~ Earl Nightingale
Yardstick quotes by Earl Nightingale
Being praised essentially means that one is receiving judgment from another person as 'good.' And the measure of what is good or bad about that act is that person's yardstick. If receiving praise is what one is after, one will have no choice but to adapt to that person's yardstick and put the brakes on one's own freedom. ~ Ichiro Kishimi
Yardstick quotes by Ichiro Kishimi
Now that the generation that grew up on '80s indie-rock has attained influential positions in the culture, that music is the new yardstick. And that will shift yet again some day. ~ Michael Azerrad
Yardstick quotes by Michael Azerrad
It's hazardous, though, being that much to someone. When you're the yardstick that everything else is measure against, eventually, you just fail. ~ Brenna Yovanoff
Yardstick quotes by Brenna Yovanoff
Success is not rightly measured by wealth, prestige and power. Success is measured by the yardstick of happiness. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Yardstick quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
Don't allow money to become the yardstick by which you measure the worth of the world around you! ~ Andrew James Pritchard
Yardstick quotes by Andrew James Pritchard
Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people. ~ Barbara Bush
Yardstick quotes by Barbara Bush
But it's not your fault. You can't control what other people do.

No, but I was responsible for my own actions. At some point we had abandoned responsibility and began fostering corruption in others so that we might shield ourselves from persecution by virtue of a common guilt. We did this in the name of profit, and we justified our crimes with the rationalization that, somewhere down the line, better people would safeguard our victims from us. I wasn't a looter or a moocher. I wasn't a producer either. None of us were. We certainly weren't capitalists. We were pillagers. Decency exists. That alone must make it important; even the great Darwin himself would say that. But we tried to cut decency out of others so as to lower the bar for ourselves.

We are relative creatures. The man who teaches his slaves to read is a saint in a world where slavery is legal, and a monster where it isn't. We aren't born knowing if we're good or bad. We decide by comparing ourselves to others - and by that yardstick it's no different to measure by our own successes than our neighbors failures, save that it's easier to corrupt the neighbor. ~ Nicholas Lamar Soutter
Yardstick quotes by Nicholas Lamar Soutter
If we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities. The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us. ~ Pope Francis
Yardstick quotes by Pope Francis
The minister of the Gospel is really the yardstick by which the nation measures its morals. ~ Jimmy Swaggart
Yardstick quotes by Jimmy Swaggart
Death to the attacker was a yardstick of success, to the media person and the government, was a mere statistic. But to her, and countless other people, death had a name, a face and a story, and a countless number of emotions. And to each, theirs was the most painful. ~ Kirthi Jayakumar
Yardstick quotes by Kirthi Jayakumar
