What matters in the end in literature, what is always there, is the truly good. And
though played out forms can throw up miraculous sports like The Importance of Being Earnest or Decline and Fall
what is good is always what is new, in both form and content. What is good forgets whatever models it might have had, and is unexpected; we have to catch it on the wing. ((p. 62, Reading & Writing) ~ V.S. Naipaul
What S Good quotes by V.S. Naipaul
Holden thought he had probably been a very good scientist. Thrilled by small victories, undeterred by setbacks. ~ James S.A. Corey
What S Good quotes by James S.A. Corey
I'm S. Theodora Markson," she said.
"I'm Lemony Snicket," I said, and handed her an envelope I had in my Pocket. Inside was something we called a letter of introduction, just a few paragraphs describing me as somebody who was an excellent reader, a good cook, a mediocre musician and an awful quarreler. ~ Lemony Snicket
What S Good quotes by Lemony Snicket
Good poets borrow, great poets steal ~ T. S. Eliot
What S Good quotes by T. S. Eliot
When prayers were ended, and his Mother had wished him good-night with that long steady look of hers which conveyed no expression of the tenderness that was in her heart, but yet had all the intensity of a blessing. ~ Elizabeth Gaskell
What S Good quotes by Elizabeth Gaskell
It was us they were talking about, with the objectivity of businessmen completing a routine transaction. In Barrett there wasn't even the hint of remorse or conscience. Some folks, they say, are born incapable of those things. Often they behave beyond suspicion, those sick people, until it's too late. Sometimes they're good-looking, charming, intelligent. Maybe they liked to pull the wings off flies more than other kids. But boys will be boys. If they served in the Army they made lousy soldiers, complaining and griping all the time about discipline, until they got a taste of combat. They often won medals, then, and were afraid but didn't go stiff and inadequate with fear like some of their buddies. They felt above the crowd. They were arrogant. Laws didn't apply to them. They could kill you with an absolute lack of concern if it suited them. They were called psychopathic personalities, P.P.'s, and Barrett was one of them.

It looked as if we were going to die. ~ Stephen Marlowe
What S Good quotes by Stephen Marlowe
You can come back here." I sniff. "I think I got it all out."
"You needed a good cry worse than anyone on earth," he says. "But, for the record, I wasn't listening, and you didn't make any weird snerk noises."
I laugh, but it comes out as another weird snerk noise. ~ Delilah S. Dawson
What S Good quotes by Delilah S. Dawson
Many things
such as loving, going to sleep, or behaving unaffectedly
are done worst when we try hardest to do them. ~ C.S. Lewis
What S Good quotes by C.S. Lewis
I'm a thinkin' my old man won't know de boys and de baby. Lor'! she's de biggest gal, now, - good she is, too, and peart, Polly is. She's out to the house, now, watchin' de hoe-cake. I 's got jist de very pattern my old man liked so much, a bakin'. Jist sich as I gin him the mornin' he was took off. Lord bless us! how I felt, dat ar morning!" Mrs. ~ Harriet Beecher Stowe
What S Good quotes by Harriet Beecher Stowe
Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things - trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Aslan himself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones. Suppose this black pit of a kingdom of yours is the only world. Well, it strikes me as a pretty poor one. ~ C.S. Lewis
What S Good quotes by C.S. Lewis
Pier 5 in Brooklyn was within a short walking distance from the subway station and in the distance the masts and funnel of my new ship could be seen. The S/S African Sun was a C-4 cargo ship built in 1942, for the war effort. Not even 15 years old, the ship looked as good as new. Farrell Lines took good care of their ships and it showed. There was always a lot of activity prior to departure and this time was no exception. We were expected to depart prior to dusk and there were things to do.
I got into my working uniform and leaving my sea bag on my bunk headed for the bridge. When I passed the open door of the Captain's room he summoned me in. "Welcome aboard Mr. Mate. I've heard good things about you!" We talked briefly about his expectations. Introducing himself as Captain Brian, he seemed friendly enough and I felt that I got off to a good start.
As the ship's Third Officer, most frequently known as the Third Mate, my first order of business was to place my license into the frame alongside those of the other deck officers. I must admit that doing so gave me a certain feeling of pride and belonging. With only an hour to go before our scheduled departure I called the engine room and gave them permission to jack over the engine; a term used to engage the engine, so as to slowly turn the screw or propeller. ~ Hank Bracker
What S Good quotes by Hank Bracker
He was studying me. ¨You know, you look an awful lot like Sodapop, the way you've got your hair and everything. I mean, except your eyes are green.¨
¨They ain't green, they're gray,¨ I said, reddening. ¨And I look about as much like Soda as you do.¨ I got to my feet. ¨He's good-looking.¨
¨Shoot,¨ Johnny said with a grin, ¨you are, too.¨ ~ S.E. Hinton
What S Good quotes by S.E. Hinton
Well and good if all things change, O Lord God, provided I am rooted in You. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
What S Good quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
One man's bad day is another man's good night. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
What S Good quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, ~ Mark S. Milwee
What S Good quotes by Mark S. Milwee
Writing is the dragon that lives underneath my floorboards. The one I incessantly feed for fear it may turn and devour my ass. Writing is the friend who doesn't return my phone calls; the itch I'm unable to scratch; a dinner invitation from a cannibal; elevator music for a narcoleptic. Writing is the hope of lifting all boats by pissing in the ocean. Writing isn't something that makes me happy like a good cup of coffee. It's just something I do because not writing, as I've found, is so much worse. ~ Quentin R. Bufogle
What S Good quotes by Quentin R. Bufogle
The intriguing history of American applied toponymy includes a few notoriously unpopular sweeping decisions a year after President Benjamin Harrison created the Board on Geographic Names in 1890. Harrison acted at the behest of several government agencies, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, which was responsible for mapping the nation's coastline, harbors, and coastal waterways. Troubled by inconsistencies in spelling, board members voted to replace centre with center, drop the ugh from names ending in orough, and shorten the suffix burgh to burg. Overnight, Centreview (in Mississippi) became Centerview, Isleborough (in Maine) became Isleboro, and Pittsburgh (in Pennsylvania) lost its final h and a lot of civic pride. The city was chartered in 1816 as Pittsburg, but the Post Office Department added the extra letter sometime later. Although both spellings were used locally and the shorter version had been the official name, many Pittsburghers complained bitterly about the cost of reprinting stationery and repainting signs. Making the spelling consistent with Harrisburg, they argued, was hardly a good reason for truncating the Iron City's moniker--although Harrisburg was the state capital, it was a smaller and economically less important place. Local officials protested that the board had exceeded its authority. The twenty-year crusade to restore the final h bore fruit in 1911, when the board reversed itself--but only for Pittsburgh. Now that I have definitely begun to live I find myself more and more convinced that civilization with its trappings and artificialities is not so good as nature. ~ H.S. Ede
What S Good quotes by H.S. Ede
There are times I almost believe that anything possible to be done should be done, not just because it's good or makes sense, simply because it's possible. ~ Sandor Marai
What S Good quotes by Sandor Marai
Whatever." I shrug. "It's good, I guess, but if given the choice, I'd still pick, like, a Kristen Ashley book any day of the week. ~ Julie Johnson
What S Good quotes by Julie Johnson
The grief hits her hard one day. the way it can't be controlled. The way that yesterday can be good and so can the day before, and so can the week and fortnight before that, but then today comes and she's back to zero. How she can't type words into her computer or even press the in-box for her mail. The effort it takes to walk. How words can't form in her mouth and how her blood feels paralyzed. ~ Melina Marchetta
What S Good quotes by Melina Marchetta
The U.S. Army cancelled an order for 600,000 black berets that were made in China. It's not just that they were made by slave laborers. It's that no soldier can feel good about himself wearing headgear from the Kathie Lee Collection. ~ Argus Hamilton
What S Good quotes by Argus Hamilton
I sometimes think that a little fear, a little hunger, might be good for us - sharpen our souls, ~ Peter S. Beagle
What S Good quotes by Peter S. Beagle
Faith is the light to victory, thanks to faith we become stronger within our spirit. Faith is hard to find, but if you believe it's there waiting for you to follow the light. We only hurt ourselves when we don't believe we have faith. Faith can be the key to success. God bless us through our hard times and good times. Just believe and you can cross that broken bridge. ~ S. Chamberlain
What S Good quotes by S. Chamberlain
A sound theory of value demands something different. It demands that good should be original and evil a mere perversion; that good should be the tree and evil the ivy; that good should be able to see all round evil (as when sane men understand lunacy) while evil cannot retaliate in kind; that good should be able to exist on its own while evil requires the good on which it is parasitic in order to continue its parasitic existence. ~ C.S. Lewis
What S Good quotes by C.S. Lewis
Snowden was extremely good at digital self-defense. When he was employed by the C.I.A. and N.S.A., one of his jobs was to teach U.S. national security officials and C.I.A. employees how to protect their data in high-threat digital environments. ~ Luke Harding
What S Good quotes by Luke Harding
The next best thing to having good ideas is recognizing good ideas from your users. Sometimes the latter is better. ~ Eric S. Raymond
What S Good quotes by Eric S. Raymond
There seems to be an audience that demands everything be explained to them that everything be easy. And I don t think that s doing us any good as a culture. The ease with which we can accomplish or conjure any possible imaginable scenario through CGI is almost directly proportionate to how uninterested we re becoming in all of this. I can remember Ray Harryhausen s animated skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts. I can remember Willis O Brien s King Kong. I can remember being awed at the artistry that had made those things possible. Yes I knew how it was done. But it looked so wonderful. These days I can see half a million Orcs coming over a hill and I am bored. I am not impressed at all. Because frankly I could have gotten someone a passerby on the street who could have gotten the same effect if you d given them half a million dollars to do it. It removes artistry and imagination and places money in the driver s seat and I think it s a pretty straight equation - that there is an inverse relationship between money and imagination. ~ Alan Moore
What S Good quotes by Alan Moore
Because we can't just blow up enough things that this becomes a good situation. ~ James S.A. Corey
What S Good quotes by James S.A. Corey
But does a growth mindset make people good just at getting their own way? Often negotiations require people to understand and try to serve the other person's interests as well. Ideally, at the end of a negotiation, both parties feel their needs have been met. In a study with a more challenging negotiation task, those with a growth mindset were able to get beyond initial failures by constructing a deal that addressed both parties' underlying interests. So, not only do those with a growth mindset gain more lucrative outcomes for themselves, but, more important, they also come up with more creative solutions that confer benefits all around. ~ Carol S. Dweck
What S Good quotes by Carol S. Dweck
My publisher, who was so good as a taster and editor, when she became a writer, lo and behold, it was all this feminine tosh. ~ V.S. Naipaul
What S Good quotes by V.S. Naipaul
[S]elf-assurance, motivation, and a good method play a much more important role in language learning than the vague concept of innate ability, and that dealing with languages is not only an effective and joyful means of developing human relationships, but also of preserving one's mental capacity and spiritual balance. ~ Kato Lomb
What S Good quotes by Kato Lomb
it is I, I myself, who turn from the good expected to the given good. Out of my own heart I do it. One can conceive a heart which did not: which clung to the good it had first thought of and turned the good which was given it into no good." "I ~ C.S. Lewis
What S Good quotes by C.S. Lewis
There are plenty of bands who never get in the charts and it doesn't mean that they're not any good. Actually, a lot of the top ten is filled with stuff that just sounds the same. I could guess what's in there now - probably a bit of GaGa, Beyonce and some U.S. R&B males. ~ Ellie Goulding
