I always like to believe that my work is about the expansion of the possibilities of the viewer. So if you have a sense of a heightened situation where there's an excitement, a physical excitement and an intellectual stimulation, there's just this sense of expansion. Because that's where the art happens. Inside the viewer. ~ Jeff Koons
Untitled Art quotes by Jeff Koons
They say that Jazz is back, and I don't think it's gone anywhere. But they say it's back. ~ Art Blakey
Untitled Art quotes by Art Blakey
If photos can reproduce the world more perfectly than any painter, can capture an instant, a look, a gesture, then what makes a painting good anymore? Painting subverts this subversion of its traditional nature by redefining itself - art is idea, not simply skillful execution. So, a work can be crudely made, or even machine made - but it has to be practically and functionally useless. ~ David Byrne
Untitled Art quotes by David Byrne
In the great cities, winter glitters with art and feasting. But poetry, the country cousin, sees only the dearth of the fields. ~ Mason Cooley
Untitled Art quotes by Mason Cooley
Art never responds to the wish to make it democratic; it is not for everybody; it is only for those who are willing to undergo the effort needed to understand it. ~ Flannery O'Connor
Untitled Art quotes by Flannery O'Connor
Like most people, I've always felt using words like 'best' when applied to art is a fun way for critics to stay busy at the end of the year, and I guess a good way to help get ratings for awards shows, which is fine. ~ Steven Van Zandt
Untitled Art quotes by Steven Van Zandt
The whole time I was in front of the camera, I was thinking of the artist. A fellow creator who had poured her soul into something truly remarkable that might simply be ignored by the whole world. I was trying to get in her head. I was trying to figure out why she had created this thing and, in the same breath, calling out the world for its callous ignorance of beauty and form... I wanted people to wae up and spend a few moments looking at the exceptional amazement of human creation. ~ Hank Green
Untitled Art quotes by Hank Green
If I can do it, it's not art. ~ Rudy Giuliani
Untitled Art quotes by Rudy Giuliani
The writer's only real task: to recreate out of the disorder of life that order which is art ~ James Baldwin
Untitled Art quotes by James Baldwin
Engineering is not a science. Science studies particular events to find general laws. Engineering design makes use of the laws to solve particular practical problems. In this it is more closely related to art or craft. ~ Ove Arup
Untitled Art quotes by Ove Arup
It is that faculty by which we discover and enjoy the beautiful, the picturesque, and the sublime in literature, art, and nature; which recognizes a noble thought, as a virtuous mind welcomes a pure sentiment by a involuntary glow of satisfaction. But while the principle of perception is inherent in the soul, it requires a certain amount of knowledge to draw out and direct it. ~ Robert Aris Willmott
Untitled Art quotes by Robert Aris Willmott
The latest literary discussions reflect a struggle between two artistic methods - romanticism and realism, with the latter clearly ascendant for the time being. ~ Yevgeny Zamyatin
Untitled Art quotes by Yevgeny Zamyatin
Thus God himself was too kind to remain idle and began to play the game of signatures signing his likeness unto the world: therefore I chance to think that all nature and the graceful sky are symbolized in the art of Geometria. ~ Johannes Kepler
Untitled Art quotes by Johannes Kepler
Art is like an ill-trained Labrador retriever that drags you out into traffic. ~ Annie Dillard
Untitled Art quotes by Annie Dillard
The misfortune in the state is, that nobody can enjoy life in peace, but that everybody must govern; and in art, that nobody will enjoy what has been produced, but that every one wants to reproduce on his own account. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Untitled Art quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Untitled Art quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
He knew Kandinsky by heart: every trickle of red, slash of black ink, and hemorrhage of gold. Each dissonant note in its allegro, the harmony in its adagio, and its deep blue intermezzo, formed a symphony he had memorized in his body. He couldn't say if Fragment 2 symbolized the Deluge, the Last Judgment, or the Resurrection. But it had become his religion, offering both redemption and pain.. ~ Kelly Oliver
Untitled Art quotes by Kelly Oliver
We're not talking about an elite art form from the price point of view. We have a building in L.A. that is incredibly open, exciting, inviting, and all that, and there's no reason for this music not to be part of everybody's everyday life. ~ Esa-Pekka Salonen
Untitled Art quotes by Esa-Pekka Salonen
The books are to remind us what asses and fool we are. They're Caeser's praetorian guard, whispering as the parade roars down the avenue, "Remember, Caeser, thou art mortal." Most of us can't rush around, talking to everyone, know all the cities of the world, we haven't time, money or that many friends. The things you're looking for, Montag, are in the world, but the only way the average chap will ever see ninety-nine per cent of them is in a book. Don't ask for guarantees. And don't look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were headed for shore. ~ Ray Bradbury
Untitled Art quotes by Ray Bradbury
Depression is the flip side of creative inspiration but it can be useful. It's telling you to stop for a little bit. You can become so fully absorbed in the world of creative work that it can lead to some imbalance in your life. ~ Shaun Tan
Untitled Art quotes by Shaun Tan
As I developed as an artist and studied art history, I noticed that all the great works were dealing with the human condition. [Art] had humor in it. It had sex in it. But it also had sorrow running through it. ~ Eric Drooker
Untitled Art quotes by Eric Drooker
I'm not like some guys who, if the Ravens lose, are ready to jump off the top of M&M Stadium. There are other things in life besides pro football. ~ Art Donovan
Untitled Art quotes by Art Donovan
Of course it's almost ludicrously difficult to talk about art. And about beauty. Beauty is a perversion--how can you retain your self-respect when you talk about it? ~ Torgny Lindgren
Untitled Art quotes by Torgny Lindgren
I remember being a 12 year old art kid and feeling like there was no exciting art movement happening, especially for somebody like me. I was looking around for artistic inspiration and could find nothing - until my older brother's friend brought a Giger book over to the house. Upon seeing the first image I knew I would never be the same. A whole new world opened up to me and I have been exploring it ever since. It's no doubt that I would not be here today, doing what I do, without his influence. H.R. Giger is the king of the Dark Art movement. ~ Chet Zar
Untitled Art quotes by Chet Zar
The study of magic is not a science, it is not an art, and it is not a religion. Magic is a craft. When we do magic, we do not wish and we do not pray. We rely upon our will and our knowledge and our skill to make a specific change to the world. ~ Lev Grossman
Untitled Art quotes by Lev Grossman
If all art is conceptual, the issue is rather simple. For concepts, like pictures, cannot be true or false. They can only be more or less useful for the formation of descriptions. The words of a language, like pictorial formulas, pick out from the flux of events a few signposts which allow us to give direction to our fellow speakers in that game of "Twenty Questions" in which we are engaged. Where the needs of users are similar, the signposts will tend to correspond. We can mostly find equivalent terms in English, French, German, and Latin, and hence the idea has taken root that concepts exist independently of language as the constituents of "reality." But the English language erects a signpost on the roadfork between "clock" and "watch" where the German has only "Uhr." The sentence from the German primer, "Meine Tante hat eine Uhr," leaves us in doubt whether the aunt has a clock or watch. Either of the two translations may be wrong as a description of a fact. In Swedish, by the way, there is an additional roadfork to distinguish between aunts who are "father's sisters," those who are "mother's sisters," and those who are just ordinary aunts. If we were to play our game in Swedish we would need additional questions to get at the truth about the timepiece. ~ E.H. Gombrich
Untitled Art quotes by E.H. Gombrich
'T is said that absence conquers love; But oh believe it not! I've tried, alas! its power to prove, But thou art not forgot. ~ Frederick William Thomas
Untitled Art quotes by Frederick William Thomas
Unless we have the courage to fight for a revival of wholesome reserve between man and man, we shall perish in an anarchy of human values ... . Socially it means the renunciation of all place-hunting, a break with the cult of the "star," an open eye both upwards and downwards, especially in the choice of one's more intimate friends, and pleasure in private life as well as courage to enter public life. Culturally it means a return from the newspaper and the radio to the book, from feverish activity to unhurried leisure, from dispersion to concentration, from sensationalism to reflection, from virtuosity to art, from snobbery to modesty, from extravagance to moderation. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Untitled Art quotes by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Impression is not enough. Design, style, technique - these, too, are not enough. Art must reach further than impression or self-revelation . ~ Ansel Adams
Untitled Art quotes by Ansel Adams
The primary pigment of poetry is the IMAGE. ~ Ezra Pound
Untitled Art quotes by Ezra Pound
I am a real person that cares about his art and cares about what he's doing - I have a heart and a soul and want to touch people and give. ~ LL Cool J
Untitled Art quotes by LL Cool J
The best thing about art is that it is the one luxury in life that can be enjoyed by everyone. And it lasts forever. ~ Lynda Resnick
Untitled Art quotes by Lynda Resnick
If a thousand painters worked for a thousand years, they could not create a work of art as beautiful as you ~ Shannon Dermott
Untitled Art quotes by Shannon Dermott
So that's our approach. Very simple, and we're really shooting for Museum of Modern Art quality. The way we're running the company, the product design, the advertising, it all comes down to this: Let's make it simple. Really simple." Apple's design mantra would remain the one featured on its first brochure: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. ~ Walter Isaacson
Untitled Art quotes by Walter Isaacson
Religion begins by offering magical aid to harassed and bewildered men; it culminates by giving to a people that unity of morals and belief which seems so favorable to statesmanship and art; it ends by fighting suicidally in the lost cause of the past. For ~ Will Durant
Untitled Art quotes by Will Durant
We need to stop excusing mediocre and downright pernicious art, stop 'taking it for what it's worth' as we take our fast foods, our overpriced cars that are no good, the overpriced houses we spend all our lives fixing, our television programs, our schools thrown up like barricades in the way of young minds, our brainless fat religions, our poisonous air, our incredible cult of sports, and our ritual of fornicating with all pretty or even horse-faced strangers. We would not put up with a debauched king, but in a democracy all of us are kings, and we praise debauchery as pluralism. This book is of course no condemnation of pluralism; but it is true that art is in one sense fascistic: it claims, on good authority, that some things are healthy for individuals and society and some things are not. ~ John Gardner
Untitled Art quotes by John Gardner
My major was Fine Arts and Education thinking I would become an Art Teacher. I couldn't visualize myself as an art teacher, thinking how it wouldn't work. ~ Mark Mothersbaugh
Untitled Art quotes by Mark Mothersbaugh
The art of painting is entering a new golden age. It is in no danger of becoming obsolete. ~ Joseph Plaskett
Untitled Art quotes by Joseph Plaskett
The purpose of arts education is not to produce more artists, though that is a byproduct. The real purpose of arts education is to create complete human beings capable of leading successful and productive lives in a free society. ~ Dana Gioia
Untitled Art quotes by Dana Gioia
To me programming is more than an important practical art. It is also a gigantic undertaking in the foundations of knowledge. ~ Grace Hopper
Untitled Art quotes by Grace Hopper
When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God made object like a tree or flower. If it clashes, it is not art. ~ Paul Cezanne
Untitled Art quotes by Paul Cezanne
Pain s the truth of art. Art is not a hobby or a pastime. It is the result of an internal battle royal, one between the quest for safety and the desire to matter. ~ Seth Godin
Untitled Art quotes by Seth Godin
I have written some poetry that I don't understand myself. ~ Carl Sandburg
Untitled Art quotes by Carl Sandburg
I love fashion as an art; I love fashion as costume, as a character. I don't like dictates and the phoniness of appearance. ~ Tahar Rahim
Untitled Art quotes by Tahar Rahim
So worried was I that people would see through the painting into my soul - and guess at secret Alison stuff - that I scraped the paint off the canvas. It was too risky to expose what everyone hides ... And yet isn't that the job of the artist? Next step is to take the risk - to work more deeply. To expose that which cannot be expressed any other way. That is art. Scary and exciting. ~ Allison Mackie
Untitled Art quotes by Allison Mackie
Photography is an itch that wont go away. No matter how much you scratch it. ~ Dara McGrath
Untitled Art quotes by Dara McGrath
I often told the fanatics of realism that there is no such thing as realism in art: it only exists in the mind of the observer. Art is a symbol, a thing conjuring up reality in our mental image. That is why I don't see any contradiction between abstract and figurative art either. ~ Antoni Tapies
Untitled Art quotes by Antoni Tapies
When oxygen and sulphur dioxide are mixed in the presence of a filiament of platinum, they form sulphurous acid. This combination takes place only if the platinum is present; nevertheless the newly formed acid contains no trace of platinum, and the platinum itself is apparently unaffected: has remained inert, neutral, and unchanged. The mind of the poet is the shred of platinum. ~ T. S. Eliot
Untitled Art quotes by T. S. Eliot
When you get to a point where there's absolutely nothing you can count on in this world, you're home free. ~ Art Hochberg
