Nonfiction is never going to die. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
In ordinary perception, the senses send an overwhelming flood of information to the brain, which the brain then filters down to a trickle it can manage for the purpose of survival in a highly competitive world. Man has become so rational, so utilitarian, that the trickle becomes most pale and thin. It is efficient, for mere survival, but it screens out the most wondrous parts of man's potential experience without his even knowing it. We're shut off from our own world. Primitive man once experienced the rich and sparkling flood of the senses fully. Children experience it for a few months-until "normal" training, conditioning, close the doors on this other world, usually for good. Somehow, the drugs opened these ancient doors. And through them modern man may at last go, and rediscover his divine birthright ... ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
We writers spent the entire twentieth century tearing down the bourgeoisie! ... We in the arts have been complicit in the denigration of the best people on earth. Why? Because so many of the most influential ideas of our time are the product of a new creature of the twentieth century, a creature that did not exist until 1898 - and that creature is known as 'the intellectual. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The Pranksters were now out among them, and it was exhilarating
look at the mothers staring!
and there was going to be holy terror in the land. But there would also be people who would look up out of their work-a-daddy lives in some town, some old guy, somebody's stenographer, and see this bus and register ... delight, or just pure open-invitation wonder. Either way, the Intrepid Travelers figured, there was hope for these people. They weren't totally turned off ... the citizens were suitably startled, outraged, delighted, nonplused, and would wheel around and start or else try to keep their cool by sidling glances like they weren't going to be impressed by any weird shit
and a few smiled in a frank way as if to say, I am with you
if only I could be with you! ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The world was simply and sheerly divided into 'the aware', those who had the experience of being vessels of the divine, and a great mass of 'the unaware', 'the unmusical', 'the unattuned. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I used to go through the dictionary looking for unusual but nontechnical words. At one time, I thought the greatest word was 'jejune' and I would throw it into every piece because something about it appealed to me. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It's like we're strands of wire intertwined in a great cable that runs through a slot ... Most people lead two-dimensional lives. All they can see is the face of the slot, a cross section, so that the wires look like a mass of separate little circles looking bigger or smaller according to how close you are. They don't
they can't see that these 'circles' are just cross sections of wires that run backward and forward infinitely and that there is a great surge through the whole cable and that anybody who is truly into the full bare essence of the thing ... ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I wrote a number of pieces in the year 1966 that were so bad that, although I'm a great collector of my own pieces, I have never collected them. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Nerds ... the 'nerd' has never been precisely defined, thanks to the psychological complexity of the creature. The word has connotations of some level of intelligence. The typical nerd is a male with intelligence but no sense of giving it a manly face. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The Grateful Dead did not play in sets; no eight numbers to a set, then a twenty-five-minute break, and so on, four or five sets and then the close-out. The Dead might play one number for five minutes or thirty minutes. Who kept time? Who could keep time, with history cut up in slices. The Dead could get just as stoned as anyone else. The ... non-attuned would look about and here would be all manner of heads, including those running the show, the Pranksters, stroked out against the walls like slices of Jello. Waiting; with nobody looking very likely to start it back up. Those who didn't care to wait would tend to drift off, stoned or otherwise, and the Test would settle down to the pudding. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
At the outset, at least, all three groups had something else to recommend them, as well: They were headquartered 3,000 miles away from the East Side of Manhattan. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Not long after I published my first book, I quickly found I was terrible at being interviewed. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It's fortunate that I am a writer, because that has helped me understand the properties of words. They are what have made life complex. In the battle for status in the animal kingdom, power and aggressiveness have been all-important. But among humans, once they acquired speech, all that changed. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It's like a boulder rolling down a hill - you can watch it and talk about it and scream and say Shit! but you can't stop it. It's just a question of where it's going to go. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
People complain about my exclamation points, but I honestly think that's the way people think. I don't think people think in essays; it's one exclamation point to another. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
'No Hands' art goes straight back to Warhol. He was the first to use elves. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
She was wearing a skirt and a big-shouldered jacket of a royal blue that was fashionable in France, a blue-and-white-striped silk blouse, and electric-blue lizard pumps with white calf caps on the toes. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Driving a stock car does not require much handling ability, at least not as compared to Grand Prix racing, because the tracks are simple banked ovals and there is almost no shifting of gears. So, qualifying becomes a test of raw nerve - of how fast a man is willing to take a curve. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I hate stories in which a person has an occupation and you never see him working at it, like all those marvelous Cary Grant movies where he's a surgeon, and you never see him in the operating room. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The contemporary art world is what Tom Wolfe would call a "statusphere." It's structured around nebulous and often contradictory hierarchies of fame, credibility, imagined historical importance, institutional affliction, perceived intelligence, wealth, and attribution such as the size of one's art collection. ~ Sarah Thornton
Tom Wolfe quotes by Sarah Thornton
and in that moment, Sherman made the terrible discovery that men make about their fathers sooner or later. For the first time he realized that the man before him was not an aging father but a boy, a boy much like himself, a boy who grew up and had a child of his own and, as best as he could, out of a sense of duty and, perhaps, love, adopted a role called being a father so that his child would have something mythical and infinitely important: a Protector, who would keep a lid on all the chaotic and catastrophic possibilities of life. And now that boy, that good actor, had grown old and fragile and tired, wearier than ever at the thought of trying to hoist the Protector's armor back onto his shoulders again, now, so far down the line. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
YOU ARE HEREBY EMPOWERED!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Then it dawned on Kramer. The cops weren't all that much different from the assistant D.A.s. It was the muck factor. The cops got tired of packing blacks and Latins off to jail all day, too. It was even worse for them, because they had to dive deeper into the muck to do it. The only thing that made it constructive was the idea that they were doing it for somebody - for the decent people. So they opened their eyes, and now they were attuned to all the good people with colored skin ... who rose to the top ... during all this relentless stirring of the muck ... You couldn't exactly call it enlightenment, thought Kramer, but it was a fucking start. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
'Why' is a question no animal can ask, because both the question and answers require speech. Have you ever seen an animal shrug? ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
And now, in the season of the Radical Chic, the Black Panthers. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
En route to the final destination, which was always to get trashed, wasted, hammered, crunked up, bombed, wrecked, sloshed, fried, flapjacked, fucked-up, or get plainlong fucked, laid, drained, get some ass, get some head, some skull, a lube job, get your oil changed, get some brown sugar, quiff, goo, pussy ... ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
If you become indignant, this elevates you to the plane of intellectual. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The only thing that had truly stuck in Sherman's mind about Christopher Marlowe, after nine years at Buckley, four years at St. Paul's, and four years at Yale, was that you were, in fact, supposed to know who Christopher Marlowe was. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
On Wall Street he and a few others - how many? three hundred, four hundred, five hundred? had become precisely that ... Masters of the Universe. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
A liberal is a conservative who has been arrested. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
My entire career, in fiction or nonfiction, I have reported and written about people who are not like me. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The press in New York has tended to favor New Society in every period, and to take it seriously, if only because it provides news. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Working on newspapers, you're writing to a certain length, often very brief pieces; you tend to look for easy forms of humor - women can't drive, things like that. That's about the level of a lot of newspaper humor. It becomes a form of laziness. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
We are all of us doomed to spend our lives watching a movie of our lives - we are always acting on what has just finished happening. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I would vote for Bush if for no other reason than to be at the airport waving off all the people who say they are going to London if he wins again. Someone has got to stay behind. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Vonnegut is one of America's basic artists, a true and worthy heir to the grand tradition of Thoreau, Whitman, Twain, Dreiser, Traven, Tom Wolfe (the real Tom Wolfe, I mean) and Steinbeck. In other words, he writes out of a concern for justice, love, honesty, and hope. ~ Edward Abbey
Tom Wolfe quotes by Edward Abbey
Sometimes we don't even realize what we really care about, because we get so distracted by the symbols. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Somebody has to be the pioneer and leave the marks for others to follow ... you've got to have some faith in what you're trying to do. It's easy to have faith as long as it goes along with what you already know. But you've got to have faith in us all the way ... ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I come from that earlier time in America when palm pilot was a nickname you recieved upon entering puberty! I was more than a palm pilot I was the palm Chuck Jager. Tom Wolfe wrote a book about me called The Right Hand Stuff. I was the only guy in my class hip enough to move to the European grip. ~ Dennis Miller
Tom Wolfe quotes by Dennis Miller
A few joints are circulating around, saliva-liva-liva-liva-liva. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I used to enjoy using dots where they would be least expected, not at the end of a sentence but in the middle, creating the effect ... of a skipped beat. It seemed to me the mind reacted - first! ... in dots, dashes, and exclamation points, then rationalized, drew up a brief, with periods. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
We are now in the Me Decade - seeing the upward roll of the third great religious wave in American history. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Put your good where it will do the most! ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Usually the German translators do something terrible, especially with Tom Wolfe, which is that they make it local. So if the characters are from Harlem, the translators put all this Berlin slang into their mouths, and that's just terrible. You cringe when you read that. But there really is no good solution to the problem, except learning English. ~ Daniel Kehlmann
Tom Wolfe quotes by Daniel Kehlmann
It's great to be a part of the greatest jackoff in history. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Everyone is taught the essentials of writing for at least 13 years, maybe more if they go to college. Nobody is taught music or tap dancing that way. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
First you do everything possible to make sure your world is antibourgeois, that it defies bourgeois tastes, that it mystifies the mob, the public, that it outdistances the insensible middle-class multitudes by light-years of subtlety and intellect - and then, having succeeded admirably, you ask with a sense of See-what-I-mean? outrage: look, they don't even buy our products! (Usually referred to as "quality art.") ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Everybody, everybody everywhere, has his own movie going, his own scenario, and everybody is acting his movie out like mad, only most people don't know that is what they're trapped by, their little script. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The modern notion of art is an essentially religious or magical one in which the artist is viewed as a holy beast who in some way, big or small, receives flashes from the godhead, which is known as creativity. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Like most men, Sherman was innocent of the routine salutatory techniques of the fashionable hostesses. For at least forty-five seconds every guest was the closest, dearest, jolliest, most wittily conspiratorial friend a girl ever had. Every male guest she touched on the arm (any other part of the body presented problems) and applied a little heartfelt pressure. Every guest, male or female, she looked at with a radar lock upon the eyes, as if captivated (by the brilliance, the wit, the beauty, and the incomparable memories). ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Even hostile parodies admit from the start that the target has a distinct voice. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The newspaper is, in fact, very bad for one's prose style. That's why I gravitated towards feature stories where you get a little more leeway in the writing style. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Seven thousand of them were indicted and arraigned, and then they entered the maw of the criminal justice system - right here - through the gateway into Gibraltar, where the vans were lined up. That was about 150 new cases, 150 more pumping hearts and morose glares, every week that the courts and the Bronx County District Attorney's Office were open. And to what end? The same stupid, dismal, pathetic, horrifying crimes were committed day in and day out, all the same. What was accomplished by assistant D.A.'s, by any of them, through all this relentless stirring of the muck? The Bronx crumbled and decayed a little more, and a little more blood dried in the cracks. The Doubts! One thing was accomplished for sure. The system was fed, and those vans brought in the chow. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Writers vary tremendously. Was it Tom Wolfe who stood up or was it [Ernest] Hemingway who had to stand up? I don't know. ~ Rod Serling
Tom Wolfe quotes by Rod Serling
It was a chorus! A rain of garbage! A Rigoletto from the sewer, from the rancid gullet of the Bronx! ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Somehow he knew, based on very little experience, that this faux-casual shit spelled money. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
You can be denounced from the heavens, and it only makes people interested. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
One of the few freedoms that we have as human beings that cannot be taken away from us is the freedom to assent to what is true and to deny what is false. Nothing you can give me is worth surrendering that freedom for. At this moment I'm a man with complete tranquillity...I've been a real estate developer for most of my life, and I can tell you that a developer lives with the opposite of tranquillity, which is perturbation. You're perturbed about something all the time. You build your first development, and right away you want to build a bigger one, and you want a bigger house to live in, and if it ain't in Buckhead, you might as well cut your wrists. Soon's you got that, you want a plantation, tens of thousands of acres devoted solely to shooting quail, because you know of four or five developers who've already got that. And soon's you get that, you want a place on Sea Island and a Hatteras cruiser and a spread northwest of Buckhead, near the Chattahoochee, where you can ride a horse during the week, when you're not down at the plantation, plus a ranch in Wyoming, Colorado, or Montana, because truly successful men in Atlanta and New York all got their ranches, and of course now you need a private plane, a big one, too, a jet, a Gulfstream Five, because who's got the patience and the time and the humility to fly commercially, even to the plantation, much less out to a ranch? What is it you're looking for in this endless quest? Tranquillity. You think if only you can acquire e ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Vulgar, but not as vulgar as Louis Vuitton, thought Sherman. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
This is the artist, then, life's hungry man, the glutton of eternity, beauty's miser, glory's slave. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
America is a wonderful country! I mean it! No honest writer would challenge that statement! The human comedy never runs out of material! it never lets you down! ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
In the U.S., the term 'general aviation' means its exact opposite, the way 'public school' does in England. An English public school is private and, on top of that, exclusive. Likewise, general-aviation airports in the U.S. are for everyone but the general public. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
American government is like a train on a track. You have the people on the left shouting; you have the people on the right. But the train's on track. They just keep ploughing ahead. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It's not just that reporting gives you a bigger slice of life, gives - lends verisimilitude to what you are doing - it's that it feeds the imagination. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I never forget. I never forgive. I can wait. I find it very easy to harbor a grudge. I have scores to settle. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The simple truth is that the Web the Internet, does one thing. It speeds up the retrieval and dissemination of information, partially eliminating such chores as going outdoors to the mailbox or the adult bookstore, or having to pick up the phone to get hold of your stockbroker or some buddies to shoot the breeze with. That one thing the Internet does, and only that. All the rest is Digibabble. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
So many people in this country have a dual loyalty. They have loyalty to America, but they also are determined to have their parade up Fifth Avenue once a year ... a Cuban parade or a Puerto Rican parade - many other countries. So they really don't forget. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I read somewhere that writers, as they get older, become more and more perfectionist. Which may be because they think more highly of themselves and they worry about their reputations. I think there's some truth to that. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I have no idea who coined the term 'the New Journalism,' or when it was coined. I have never even liked the term. Any movement, group, party, program, philosophy or theory that goes under a name with 'new' in it is just begging for trouble, of course. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
And - of course! - the Non-people. The whole freaking world was full of people who were bound to tell you they weren't qualified to do this or that but they were determined to go ahead and do just that thing anyway. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I make out a schoolbus ... glowing orange, green, magenta, lavender, chlorine blue, every fluorescent pastel imaginable in thousands of designs, both large and small, like a cross between Fernand Liger and Dr. Strange, roaring together and vibrating off each other as if somebody had given Hieronymous Bosch fifty buckets of day-glo paint and a 1939 International Harvester schoolbus and told him to go to it. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I had always looked down on sociology as this arriviste discipline. It didn't have the noble history of English and history as a subject. But once I had a little exposure to it, I said, 'Hey, here's the key. Here's the key to understanding life and all its forms.' ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It is either make this thing permanent inside of you or forever just climb draggled up into the conning tower every time for one short glimpse of the horizon. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Art is a creed, not a craft. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It helps to know from a very early age what you want to do. From the time I was five years old, I wanted to be a writer, even though I couldn't even read. It was mainly because I thought of my father as a writer. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Fortunately, the world is full of people with information compulsion who want to tell you their stories. They want to tell you things that you don't know. They're some of the greatest allies that any writer has. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
My idol is Emile Zola. He was a man of the left, so people expected of him a kind of 'Les Miserables,' in which the underdogs are always noble people. But he went out, and found a lot of ambitious, drunk, slothful and mean people out there. Zola simply could not - and was not interested in - telling a lie. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
I don't think journalists should talk about whom they're voting for. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Frankly, these days, without a theory to go with it, I can't see a painting. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
None of us are going to deny what other people are doing. If saying bullshit is somebody's thing, then he says bullshit. If somebody is an ass-kicker, then that's what he's going to do on this trip, kick asses. He's going to do it right out front and nobody is going to have anything to get pissed off about. He can just say, 'I'm sorry I kicked you in the ass, but I'm not sorry I'm an ass-kicker. That's what I do, I kick people in the ass.' Everybody is going to be what they are, and whatever they are, there's not going to be anything to apologize about. What we are, we're going to wail with on this whole trip. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Loneliness wasn't just a state of mind, was it? It was tactile. She could feel it. It was a sixth sense, not in some fanciful play of words, but physically. It hurt ... it hurt like phagocytes devouring the white matter of her brain. It was merely that she had no friends. She didn't even have a sanctuary in which she could simply be alone. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
By the time I received my doctorate in American studies in 1957, I was in the twisted grip of a disease of our times in which the sufferer experiences an overwhelming urge to join the 'real world.' So I started working for newspapers. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Most people don't read editorial pages. I think I must have been 40 before I even looked at an editorial page. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
he published a manifesto with a title Darwinists have been quoting ever since: "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution."78 ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Laurie piped up again. 'At State, everybody calls diversity dispersity. What happens is, everybody has their own clubs, their own signs, their own sections where they all sit in the dining hall--all the African Americans are over there? . . . and all the Asians sit over't these other tables? -- except for the Koreans? -- because they don't get along with the Japanese so they sit way over there? Everybody's dispersed into their own little groups -- and everybody's told to distrust everybody else? Everybody's told that everybody else is trying to screw them over--oops!' -- Laurie pulled a face and put her fingertips over her lips -- 'I'm sorry!' She rolled eyes and smiled. 'Anyway, the idea is, every other group is like prejudiced against your group, and no matter what they say, they're only out to take advantage of you, and you should have nothing to do with them -- unless your white, in which case all the others are not prejudiced against you, they're like totally right, because you really are a racist and everything, even if you don't know it? Everybody ends up dispersed into their own like turtle shells, suspicious of everybody else and being careful not to fraternize with them. Is it like that at Dupont? ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
It was as if the press in America, for all its vaunted independence, were a great colonial animal, an animal made up of countless clustered organisms responding to a central nervous system. In the late 1950's (as in the late 1970's) the animal seemed determined that in all matters of national importance the proper emotion, the seemly sentiment, the fitting moral tone, should be established and should prevail; and all information that muddied the tone and weakened the feeling should simply be thrown down the memory hole. In a later period this impulse of the animal would take the form of blazing indignation about corruption, abuses of power, and even minor ethical lapses, among public officials; here, in April of 1959, it took the form of a blazing patriotic passion for the seven test pilots who had volunteered to go into space. In either case, the animal's fundamental concern remained the same: the public, the populace, the citizenry, must be provided with the correct feelings! One might regard this animal as the consummate hypocritical Victorian gent. Sentiments that one scarcely gives a second thought to in one's private life are nevertheless insisted upon in all public utterances. (And this grave gent lives on in excellent health.) ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
They became desperate for an antidote, such as coziness & color. They tried to bury the obligatory white sofas under Thai-silk throw pillows of every rebellious, iridescent shade of Magenta, pink, and tropical green imaginable. But the architect returned, as he always does, like the conscience of a Calvinist, and he lectured them and hectored them and chucked the shimmering little sweet things out. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Well ... things are beginning to stack up a little," said Gordo. It was the same old sod-hut drawl. He sounded like the airline pilot who, having just slipped two seemingly certain mid-air collisions and finding himself in the midst of a radar fuse-out and control-tower dysarthria, says over the intercom: "Well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll be busy up here in the cockpit making our final approach into Pittsburgh, and so we want to take this opportunity to thank you for flying American and we hope we'll see you again real soon." It was second-generation Yeager, now coming from earth orbit. Cooper was having a good time. He knew everybody was in a sweat down below. But this was what he and the boys had wanted all along, wasn't it? ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
We live in an age in which ideas, important ideas, are worn like articles of fashion - and for precisely the same reason articles of fashion are worn, which is to make the wearer look better and to feel à la mode. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
He Who Would Live Forever had done an instantaneous back-of-the-envelope calculation and decided that the vicinity of the Chevrolet Suburban was a better strategic alternative than anyplace anywhere near that whitish sandy road above which a gigantic terror-chattering rattlesnake now thrashed in the grip of his boss gone berserk. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
A persistent case of the bingos was enough to wash a man out of night carrier landings. That did not mean you were finished as a Navy pilot. It merely meant that you were finished so far as carrier ops were concerned, which meant that you were finished so far as combat was concerned, which meant you were no longer in the competition, no longer ascending the pyramid, no longer qualified for the company of those with the right stuff. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Actual class struggles apart, one of the aesthetic ways you could prove that there was a class system in America was by cogitating on the word, or acronym, 'WASP.' First minted by E. Digby Baltzell in his book The Protestant Establishment, the term stood for 'White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.' Except that, as I never grew tired of pointing out, the 'W' was something of a redundancy (there being by definition no BASPs or JASPs for anyone to be confused with, or confused about). 'ASP,' on the other hand, lacked some of the all-important tone. There being so relatively few Anglo-Saxon Catholics in the United States, the 'S' [sic] was arguably surplus to requirements as well. But then the acronym AS would scarcely do, either. And it would raise an additional difficulty. If 'Anglo-Saxon' descent was the qualifying thing, which surely it was, then why were George Wallace and Jerry Falwell not WASPs? After all, they were not merely white and Anglo-Saxon and Protestant, but very emphatic about all three things. Whereas a man like William F. Buckley, say, despite being a white Irish Catholic, radiated the very sort of demeanor for which the word WASP had been coined to begin with. So, for the matter of that, did the dapper gentleman from Richmond, Virginia, Tom Wolfe. Could it be, then, that WASP was really a term of class rather than ethnicity? Q.E.D. ~ Christopher Hitchens
Tom Wolfe quotes by Christopher Hitchens
I have discovered that for me - now, maybe it doesn't work for everybody - for me, it is much more effective to arrive at any situation as a man from Mars than to try to fit in. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Everything in everybody's life is ... significant. And everybody is alert, watching for the meanings. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
Love is the ultimate expression of the will to live. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
We are always acting on what has just finished happening. It happened at least 1/30th of a second ago. We think we're in the present, but we aren't. The present we know is only a movie of the past. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The first newspaper I worked on was the 'Springfield Union' in Springfield, Massachusetts. I wrote over a hundred letters to newspapers asking for work and got three responses, two no's. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, old people in America had prayed, "Please God, don't let me look poor." In the year 2000, they prayed, "Please God, don't let me look old." Sexiness was equated with youth, and youth ruled. The most widespread age-related disease was not senility but juvenility.
~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
They were Archer's second set of children an d paragons of contemporary teenage cynicism. They enjoyed setting fire to the tails of tender thoughts. ~ Tom Wolfe
Tom Wolfe quotes by Tom Wolfe
The sad truth was that the United States had not been reduced to a smoking rubble by the first World War. ~ Tom Wolfe
