It was Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the television series, 1997-2003, not the lackluster movie that preceded it) that blazed the trail for Twilight and the slew of other paranormal romance novels that followed, while also shaping the broader urban fantasy field from the late 1990s onward.

Many of you reading this book will be too young to remember when Buffy debuted, so you'll have to trust us when we say that nothing quite like it had existed before. It was thrillingly new to see a young, gutsy, kick-ass female hero, for starters, and one who was no Amazonian Wonder Woman but recognizably ordinary, fussing about her nails, her shoes, and whether she'd make it to her high school prom. Buffy's story contained a heady mix of many genres (fantasy, horror, science-fiction, romance, detective fiction, high school drama), all of it leavened with tongue-in-cheek humor yet underpinned by the serious care with which the Buffy universe had been crafted. Back then, Whedon's dizzying genre hopping was a radical departure from the norm-whereas today, post-Buffy, no one blinks an eye as writers of urban fantasy leap across genre boundaries with abandon, penning tender romances featuring werewolves and demons, hard-boiled detective novels with fairies, and vampires-in-modern-life sagas that can crop up darn near anywhere: on the horror shelves, the SF shelves, the mystery shelves, the romance shelves. ~ Ellen Datlow
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Ellen Datlow
The premise of Nossiter in 'Mondovino' would have been a lot more accurate when I started writing about wine in 1978 than when the movie was made in 2003. When I started, I was enormously critical of California wines, and I thought the entire wine industry was on a real slippery slope. ~ Robert M. Parker, Jr.
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Robert M. Parker, Jr.
I was commissioned in 2003 to create an original show, and began developing 'Upwake.' 'Upwake' tells the story of Zero, a modern-day business man, going to work with his life in a suitcase, stuck between dream and reality and not able to decipher the two. I wanted 'Upwake' to have the same audiovisual qualities as a movie would. ~ Natasha Tsakos
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Natasha Tsakos
A handful of individual football stars - not necessarily the most talented, but those boasting good looks, beautiful wives and an animated private life - assumed a role in European public life and popular newspapers hitherto reserved for movie starlets or minor royalty. When David Beckham (an English player of moderate technical gifts but an unsurpassed talent for self-promotion) moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003, it made headline television news in every member-state of the European Union. Beckham's embarrassing performance at the European Football Championships in Portugal the following year - the England captain missed two penalties, hastening his country's ignominious early departure - did little to dampen the enthusiasm of his fans. ~ Tony Judt
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Tony Judt
A movie will do in one second, with one image, what it will take a novelist at least a page to describe. ~ Yann Martel
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Yann Martel
I think the key divide between the interactive media and the narrative media is the difficulty in opening up an empathic pathway between the gamer and the character, as differentiated from the audience and the characters in a movie or a television show. ~ Steven Spielberg
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Steven Spielberg
First the flame and then the flood:
In the end it's Blackthorn blood.
Seek thou to forget what's past
First thirteen and then the last.
Search not the book of angels gray,
Red or white will lead you far astray.
To regain what you have lost,
Find the black book at any cost. ~ Cassandra Clare
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Cassandra Clare
To tell you the truth I love Sam. It's not a movie kind of love either. I just look at her sometimes and I think she is the prettiest and nicest person in the whole world. ~ Stephen Chbosky
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Stephen Chbosky
Scary is good. Kids like going to a movie and being really scared rather than fake scared. ~ Freddie Highmore
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Freddie Highmore
If the people that believed the moon landing was staged on a movie lot had access to unlimited money from large carbon polluters or some other special interest who wanted to confuse people into thinking that the moon landing didn't take place, I'm sure we'd have a robust debate about it right now. ~ Al Gore
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Al Gore
Whenever I finished filming a movie, I felt my job was only half done. Every film had to be nurtured in the marketplace. You can have the greatest movie in the world, but if you don't get it out there, if people don't know about it, you have nothing. ~ Arnold Schwarzenegger
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Arnold Schwarzenegger
I want to grow up, live my life, experience things, make movies about those experiences and by the time the audience catches up, hopefully they'll have a movie there that helps them get through that next phase when the discover life isn't always like High School Musical. ~ Zac Efron
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Zac Efron
Sometimes a movie series that becomes popular can be a blessing and curse because you get known for that. People don't give you a chance, after that ... I'm a big proponent of getting somebody that you always admire and giving them a chance to do something else because they can redefine themselves. ~ Robert Rodriguez
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Robert Rodriguez
When I was 24, I was full of life. I was that ham who wanted to be famous, a movie star, all that stuff. I think it's cool. But it was not what I was searching for, really. It was more a delusion. ~ Jean-Claude Van Damme
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Jean-Claude Van Damme
And getting stunt coordinator Dan Bradley and everybody from the whole 'Bourne Supremacy' crew, I think was real cool for our film because we do a bunch of really big jumps in this movie. ~ Sean William Scott
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Sean William Scott
I don't want to sound superficial, but when I go see a movie myself, I'd rather look at Tom Cruise than some shmo with a beer belly ~ Natalie Portman
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Natalie Portman
I don't like characters that are left being jerks at the end of the movie. ~ Jeremy London
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Jeremy London
I had just made this album called 'Mind Blow,' a CD-R release on Spirit of Orr. This was in 2003. Quite a few of the songs from 'Was Dead' were actually on that. ~ King Tuff
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by King Tuff
I grew up, probably like a lot of people, on cartoons. And I never thought I would have the chance to be in an animated movie. It's good also to show the world my sweet side with them. ~ Seann William Scott
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Seann William Scott
For we were not always burdened by debt, dependent on foreign aid and handouts; in the stories we tell of ourselves we were not the crazed and destitute radicals you see on your television channels but rather saints and poets and - yes - conquering kings. We built the Royal Mosque and the Shalimar Gardens in this city, and we built the Lahore Fort with its mighty walls and wide ramp for our battle-elephants. And we did these things when your country was still a collection of thirteen small colonies, gnawing away at the edge of a continent. ~ Mohsin Hamid
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Mohsin Hamid
In 2003, I almost died of an intestinal blockage when I was on a mountain in Chile, filming a segment for 'Scientific American Frontiers.' ~ Alan Alda
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Alan Alda
Obviously, when I came to do the movie I knew that I was going to have to take my clothes off so I might have worked a little bit harder to keep myself fit. But I think that's the irony of it - you see all these fit and healthy people, and I'm not making any comments on it, but everybody deep down is a f**k up somewhere. ~ Daniel Craig
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Daniel Craig
I started playing poker in 2003 during my pregnancy, to distract myself from my awful morning sickness. For months all I did was cry and play Texas Hold'em. ~ Cheryl Hines
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Cheryl Hines
You can make a movie that's more focused on the jokes, but Young Adult was not that kind of movie. ~ Kristen Stewart
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Kristen Stewart
I'm certainly not going to tell other people what they should do with their own personal lives. I think it's certainly easier for a director to be out. The public is not going to see a movie because the director is gay or straight. It's maybe a little harder for an actor or actress because of, you know, the love roles and stuff. But gay people have been impersonating heteros in the movies for years. So, hopefully, that is becoming less of an issue. I think it would have been really great if a gay person had played a gay person. That's brave! ~ John Waters
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by John Waters
There's so many things I'm dying to do. I wanna do a movie with horses. ~ Bethany Joy Lenz
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Bethany Joy Lenz
Strategic thinkers were naturally rattled to find this outsider fooling around with their work. They had been thinking strategically when Reagan was just another movie actor playing opposite a chimpanzee, for heaven's sake. They think Reagan is too naive, too innocent, to grasp the intellectual complexities of cold war strategy. ~ Russell Baker
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Russell Baker
'The Tiger And The Snow' is a beautiful movie. I am in love with this idea. ~ Roberto Benigni
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Roberto Benigni
I think about so many things, my brain rarely shuts off. At night, my thoughts go over the day I had like replaying a movie. I try to make sense of what happened to the characters.
I'm the director, but can never reshow the edited film. ~ Tina J. Richardson
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Tina J. Richardson
My first movie, 'Heathers,' had played at the festival, so I had a little bit of a Sundance connection, but I didn't really know about the Labs. ~ Michael Lehmann
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Michael Lehmann
I was so intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn't living an interesting life myself. ~ Brad Pitt
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Brad Pitt
Every movie has three things you have to do - you have to have a compelling story that keeps people on the edge of their seats; you have to populate that story with memorable and appealing characters; and you have to put that story and those characters in a believable world. Those three things are so vitally important. ~ John Lasseter
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by John Lasseter
I love pre-code movies. Some of my favorites are movies with Warren William and there is an MGM film called "Skyscraper Souls" which is the best Warner Brothers movie that MGM ever made. ~ Mike Royer
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Mike Royer
In 'War Party,' I play a quarter-breed Indian. It's a serious movie, but it's funny, too. ~ Kevin Dillon
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Kevin Dillon
It hadn't been so long ago, yet sometimes she felt that she'd been an altogether different person back then. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Nicholas Sparks
Films for TV have to be much closer to the book, mainly because the objective with a TV movie that translates literature is to get the audience, after seeing this version, to pick up the book and read it themselves. My attitude is that TV can never really be any form of art, because it serves audience expectations. ~ Michael Haneke
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Michael Haneke
That's what I love about music.
- What?
- One of the most banal scenes
is suddenly invested
with so much meaning, you know?
All these banalities,
they're suddenly turned
into these...
these beautiful, effervescent pearls.
From music.
I've got to say, as I've gotten older,
these pearls are just...
...becoming increasingly
more and more rare to me.
More string than pearls?
Yeah. You've got to travel
over a lot more string
to get to the pearls.
This moment is a pearl, Gretta.
It sort of is, isn't it?
All this has been a pearl. ~ Begin Again
Thirteen 2003 Movie quotes by Begin Again
With all these tentpoles, franchises, reboots and sequels, is there still room for movies in the movie business? ~ Lynda Obst
