The question is frequently asked: Why does a man become a drug addict?
The answer is that he usually does not intend to become an addict. You don't wake up one morning and decide to be a drug addict. It takes at least three months' shooting twice a day to get any habit at all. And you don't really know what junk sickness is until you have had several habits. It took me almost six months to get my first habit, and then the withdrawal symptoms were mild. I think it no exaggeration to say it takes about a year and several hundred injections to make an addict.
The questions, of course, could be asked: Why did you ever try narcotics? Why did you continue using it long enough to become an addict? You become a narcotics addict because you do not have strong motivations in the other direction. Junk wins by default. I tried it as a matter of curiosity. I drifted along taking shots when I could score. I ended up hooked. Most addicts I have talked to report a similar experience. They did not start using drugs for any reason they can remember. They just drifted along until they got hooked. If you have never been addicted, you can have no clear idea what it means to need junk with the addict's special need. You don't decide to be an addict. One morning you wake up sick and you're an addict. (Junky, Prologue, p. xxxviii) ~ William S. Burroughs

Whoever coined the phrase 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder,' was an idiot.

Absence makes a bitch go crazy. ~ Toni Aleo

Don't think for one min that I haven't been taking mental notes of everyone taking shots at me this summer. And I mean everyone! ~ LeBron James
Taking Shots quotes by LeBron James
Fuck you!"
Randy pulled a squirt bottle from his desk and sprayed us both. "Hush," he said.
Jin winced "Now, that's just unprofessional!"
"Quit bitching," I said, shaking the water off my face.
"You may be used to taking shots in the face, but I'm not," he said.
Okay, that was a good one. "Go fuck yourself," I said. ~ Andy Weir
Taking Shots quotes by Andy Weir
Fox is notorious for having a very thick skin about taking shots at themselves. ~ Seth MacFarlane
Taking Shots quotes by Seth MacFarlane
I balked at trying antidepressants, I just couldn't see myself taking pills to try to be less of a fraud. ~ David Foster Wallace
Taking Shots quotes by David Foster Wallace
You cannot begin to preserve any species of animal unless you preserve the habitat in which it dwells. Disturb or destroy that habitat and you will exterminate the species as surely as if you had shot it. So conservation means that we have to preserve forest and grassland, river and lake, even the sea itself. This is vital not only for the preservation of animal life generally, but for the future existence of man himself-a point that seems to escape many people. ~ Gerald Durrell
Taking Shots quotes by Gerald Durrell
Taking consciousness as a primitive rather than as an emergent property of the physical brain, Chalmers's search for a nonreductive ontology of consciousness led him to what he calls panprotopsychism. The proto reflects the possibility that the intrinsic properties of the basic entities of the physical world may be not quite mental, but that collectively they are able to constitute the mental (it is in this sense of proto that physics is "protochemical"). In this view, mind is much more fundamental to the universe than we ordinarily imagine. Panprotopsychism has the virtue of integrating mental events into the physical world. "We need psychophysical laws connecting physical processes to subjective experience," Chalmers says. "Certain aspects of quantum mechanics lend themselves very nicely to this. ~ Jeffrey M. Schwartz

A short time later, when the carpenter was taking measurements for the coffin, through the window they saw a light rain of tiny yellow flowers falling. They fell on the town all through the night in a silent storm, and they covered the roofs and blocked the doors and smothered the animals who slept outdoors. So many flowers fell from the sky that in the morning the streets were carpeted with a compact cushion and they had to clear them away with shovels and rakes so that the funeral procession could pass by. ~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Taking Shots quotes by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
We become just by performing just action, temperate by performing temperate actions, brave by performing brave action. ~ Aristotle.
Taking Shots quotes by Aristotle.
The name meant "Angel of Victory," which Jaffa supposed was appropriate enough. The Divine Hand himself had started the fashion for taking the names of angels when he'd called himself Vale-dan-Rahksa, the Angel of Vengeance. At the rate the Council was expanding, there would soon be a serious shortage of angels. Jaffa wondered what would happen when they ran out of manly, intimidating names and were reduced to naming themselves after the Angel of Sisterly Affection or the Angel of Small Crafts. ~ Django Wexler
Taking Shots quotes by Django Wexler
His lips brushed over hers. She let out a sigh of relief and joy and pleasure. He pulled her tighter against him, taking her mouth with his own. She melted into him and the kiss, heart pounding, desire sparking along her nerve endings like a string of lit dynamite. ~ B.J. Daniels
Taking Shots quotes by B.J. Daniels
I wasn't angry the night I shot him. ~ Mark David Chapman
Taking Shots quotes by Mark David Chapman
In the earl days of their marriage he had discussed with her every aspect of his workday. They'd discussed their hopes and dreams in whispers so as not to awaken the children sleeping in the next room.
Over the years, other obligations had pulled at them, sometimes taking precedence over this quiet pillow talks. Nancy missed them and longed for the days when he had valued her opinion above all others. He still did, she was sure; he just didn't ask for it as frequently as he had before his success was assured. ~ Sandra Brown
Taking Shots quotes by Sandra Brown
My kitchen bench is covered with vitamins and protein powders. I go through phases when I'm sure I'm taking too many - but I don't get sick often. ~ Natalie Imbruglia
Taking Shots quotes by Natalie Imbruglia
Stand or kneel with one hand on your pubic bone in front and the other on your tailbone. Notice how far apart your hands are. Now lean backward as far as possible (taking care not to hurt yourself) and continue to notice how far apart your hands are. Next, lean forward until your torso is parallel to the ground. ~ Ina May Gaskin
Taking Shots quotes by Ina May Gaskin
To really enjoy drugs you've got to want to get out of where you are. But there are some wheres that are harder to get out of than others. This is the drug-taking problem for adults. Teenage Weltscbmerz is easy to escape. But what drug will get a grown-up out of, for instance, debt? ~ P. J. O'Rourke
Taking Shots quotes by P. J. O'Rourke
Now the terror is beginning. Now taking her lump 0£ chalk she draws figures, six, seven, eight, and then a cross and then a line on the blackboard. What is the answer? The others look; they look with understanding. Louis writes; Susan writes; Neville writes; Jinny writes; even Bernard has now begun to write. But I cannot write. I see only figures. The others are handing in their answers, one by one. Now it is my turn. But I have no answer. The others are allowed to go. They slam the door. Miss Hudson goes. I am left alone to find an answer. The figures mean nothing now. Meaning has gone. The clock ticks. The two hands are convoys marching through a desert. The black bars on the clock face are green oases. The long hand has marched ahead to find water. The other painfully stumbles among hot stones in the desert. It will die in the desert. The kitchen door slams. Wild dogs bark far away. Look, the loop 0£ the figure is beginning to fill with time; it hole rorld in it. I begin to draw a figure and the world is looped in it, and I myself am outside the loop; which I now join-and seal up, and make entire. ~ Virginia Woolf
Taking Shots quotes by Virginia Woolf
All those years, what I did for them ... And they didn't try to stop you from taking me. There it was, the giant pain that cracked me in two if I thought about it too long. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Taking Shots quotes by Sarah J. Maas
taking the money. She made it sound like more ~ Danielle Steel
Taking Shots quotes by Danielle Steel
My dad said, 'Go to college and take whatever you want.' So, I went to the University of Miami. When I got up to the line at registration, I saw that you had to take math and history. I said, 'There's no way I'm taking math and history.' And right next to it was the line for the drama department. ~ Ray Liotta
Taking Shots quotes by Ray Liotta
Me home, the weird older daughter, back in my room. Hanging out with my mother. Taking care of my mother. Bargaining for an evening out now and then. Still no driver's license. Never leaving. It would be like when I was sixteen, insisting that I was an adult, except that I wasn't, in some ways. Was I an adult? Or was I something else? Would I ever grow up? ~ Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha
Taking Shots quotes by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha
I'll continue on the path I've been taking, feet on the ground, describing people's lives, describing people's emotions, writing from the standpoint of the ordinary people. ~ Mo Yan
Taking Shots quotes by Mo Yan
I'm not a great one for chatting people up, because it's phony. I don't want people to feel at ease. You want a bit of edge. There are quite long, agonized silences. I love it. Something strange might happen. I mean, taking photographs is a very nasty thing to do. It's very cruel. ~ Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl Of Snowdon
Taking Shots quotes by Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl Of Snowdon
Practicing As a man in his last breath drops all he is carrying each breath is a little death that can set us free. Breathing is the fundamental unit of risk, the atom of inner courage that leads us into authentic living. With each breath, we practice opening, taking in, and releasing. Literally, the teacher is under our nose. When anxious, we simply have to remember to breathe. So often we make a commitment to change our ways, but stall in the face of ~ Mark Nepo
Taking Shots quotes by Mark Nepo
In a way, I created Utopia as a platform for me to become more of a guitar player and less of the kind of balladeer that people were taking me for. ~ Todd Rundgren
Taking Shots quotes by Todd Rundgren
He studied the boulders, then pushed against one until it began to move.
When she gasped, he stopped. "Seems I could free you, after all."
She gave him a tentative touch on his chest. "What would it take to get you to finish moving those?"
"What are you offering?" he asked, his voice rougher.
"Money? Would you take money to push these free?"
"I've plenty of my own. More than enough for both of us."
She scowled at that. "What do you want, then?"
"I want" - he ran his hand over his face - "to . . . touch you. Not here, but tonight . . ."
"Not going to happen." She crossed her arms over her chest, and his gaze landed on her damp cleavage. As he had that night on the coast, he looked like he was considering throwing her over his shoulder and tracing her back to his bed. "I do so wish my breasts would stop staring at your eyes."
His head jerked up, and he had to clear his throat to rasp, "Kiss me. Kiss me, and I'll free you."
"The last time that happened you bit me, and you could do it again." Kissing Sebastian always seemed to lead to more. Last time, it had led to his taking her blood.
And possibly her memories.
"I never bit you. I grazed your skin. Accidently."
"Then tell me you haven't contemplated doing it again."
"I" –he exhaled heavily - "cannot. The pleasure was too intense to ignore. ~ Kresley Cole

I was just taking my sketchbook to Kinko's and making photocopies and hand-assembling them - folding them over and stapling them. ~ Adrian Tomine
Taking Shots quotes by Adrian Tomine
Civilization today reminds me of an ape with a blowtorch playing in a room full of dynamite. It looks like the monkeys are about to operate the zoo, and the inmates are taking over the asylum. ~ Vance Havner
Taking Shots quotes by Vance Havner
And how do you explain to your wife that you don't have all the answers, and that you might not know what you are doing, and that you are afraid you are going to fail? How do you admit that you are most afraid that, one day, she'll walk - and replace you with an educated, professor-type guy, who shares her same interests, schedule, and the way she was used to living, especially when all of your friends, your business associates, even your own damned brother, are all just waiting for you to mess up so they can have a shot at taking her away from you? How do you look the woman you love in her eyes and tell her that? ~ Leslie Esdaile
Taking Shots quotes by Leslie Esdaile
They're so fond of Liberty in this part of the globe, that they buy her and sell her and carry her to market with 'em. They've such a passion for Liberty, that they can't help taking liberties with her. ~ Charles Dickens
Taking Shots quotes by Charles Dickens
I didn't have any qualms. I'm used to taking my clothes off in front of strangers. I've done it since I was 14 - with my mother's adult education art classes. She liked to paint and I went along as a life model. ~ Alex Kingston
Taking Shots quotes by Alex Kingston
It [salvation] is not this flu shot mentality of an invitation of the Gospel. ~ Paul Washer
Taking Shots quotes by Paul Washer
Taking the right roads leading out of your past to better land ... brings you to a brighter future! ~ Timothy Pina
Taking Shots quotes by Timothy Pina
But as long as you know you're nobody special, you'll be a very decent sort of Horse, on the whole, and taking one thing with another. ~ C.S. Lewis
Taking Shots quotes by C.S. Lewis
And when I had finished painting & looked at that poor leatherjacket which now lay dead on the table I began to wonder whether, as each fish died, the world was reduced in the amount of love that you might know for such a creature. Whether there was that much less wonder & beauty left to go round as each fish was hauled up in the net. And if we kept on taking & plundering & killing, if the world kept on becoming ever more impoverished of love & wonder & beauty in consequence, what, in the end, would be left? ~ Richard Flanagan
Taking Shots quotes by Richard Flanagan
The only evil that associates itself with mushrooms is taking too little. ~ Terence McKenna
Taking Shots quotes by Terence McKenna
The thing I loved most about pictures was that with time, it froze our emotions. Even years after taking that picture, after all we'd been through - the heartache, the struggles - when I looked at it, I felt the happiness we'd shared that day. ~ Claire Contreras
Taking Shots quotes by Claire Contreras
Many people visualize a God who sits comfortably on a distant throne, remote, aloof, uninterested, and indifferent to the needs of mortals, until, it may be, they can badger him into taking action on their behalf. Such a view is wholly false. The Bible reveals a God who, long before it even occurs to man to turn to him, while man is still lost in darkness and sunk in sin, takes the initiative, rises from his throne, lays aside his glory, and stoops to seek until he finds him. ~ John R.W. Stott
Taking Shots quotes by John R.W. Stott
In taking out an insurance policy one pays for it in dollars and cents, always at liberty to discontinue payments. If, however, womans premium is a husband, she pays for it with her name, her privacy, her self-respect, her very life, until death doth part. ~ Emma Goldman
Taking Shots quotes by Emma Goldman
I have always had this very strong, call it a feeling, call it a prejudice, call it a conviction ... that the mysteries are not easily available. You have to earn entrance into them. You didn't learn things for too little. You had to pay a price. And I felt that LSD was just blasting superhighways into the mysteries. And what I really didn't like about LSD is that people who were taking it were seeming to become less and less as they took it. They got emptier and more vapid. ~ Norman Mailer
Taking Shots quotes by Norman Mailer
Boxer, feeling that his attentions were due to the family in general, and must be impartially distributed, dashed in and out with bewildering inconstancy; now, describing a circle of short barks round the horse, where he was being rubbed down at the stable-door; now feigning to make savage rushes at his mistress, and facetiously bringing himself to sudden stops; now, eliciting a shriek from Tilly Slowboy, in the low nursing-chair near the fire, by the unexpected application of his moist nose to her countenance; now, exhibiting an obtrusive interest in the baby; now, going round and round upon the hearth, and lying down as if he had established himself for the night; now, getting up again, and taking that nothing of a fag-end of a tail of his, out into the weather, as if he had just remembered an appointment, and was off, at a round trot, to keep it. ~ Charles Dickens
Taking Shots quotes by Charles Dickens
(After Nicholas tells Dahlia that he loves her)
" ... Just don't break my heart my heart, Dahlia. I've never handed it over to anyone before."
She placed both hands over his. "I've never had anyone's heart. I don't know the first thing about keeping hearts. You're taking a terrible risk."
"That's what I do best." ... "Are you feeling relaxed now?" ...
"I was until you started throwing around the L-word. That's enough to scare anyone. ~ Christine Feehan

Calculated risk taking will pay huge dividends. How will you ever get to third base with one foot on second? The biggest risk is not taking risks. ~ Robin S. Sharma
Taking Shots quotes by Robin S. Sharma
:That's what you do when you love someone." ... "You give all you have to give," he said, "and they do the same. You fill each other up." ... "It doesn't work if it isn't even, though," I said. "If one does all the giving and the other does all the taking ~ Catherine Gayle

Nobody's ever called me Sir Richard. Occasionally in America, I hear people saying Sir Richard and think there's some Shakespearean play taking place. But nowhere else anyway. ~ Richard Branson
Taking Shots quotes by Richard Branson
To put it baldly, there are two ways to become wealthy: to create wealth or to take wealth away from others. The former adds to society. The latter typically subtracts from it, for in the process of taking it away, wealth gets destroyed. A monopolist who overcharges for his product takes money from those whom he is overcharging and at the same time destroys value. To get his monopoly price, he has to restrict production. ~ Joseph E. Stiglitz
Taking Shots quotes by Joseph E. Stiglitz
The Internet is a very intimate entertainment experience. I'm in my own apartment talking to people, and I want them to feel like they're with me in my apartment. So if I'm listening to them and taking ideas from them and being honest with how I'm feeling, it resonates even more that we're having a real, actual conversation. ~ Grace Helbig
Taking Shots quotes by Grace Helbig
Back in the 1980s when everyone looked a bit off, my friend Tim and his brothers had some publicity shots taken of their band. Eventually they sold the rights to a stock photo agency. Years later, one of the images turned up on a greeting card. The inside said, Greetings from the Dork Club. ~ Mary Roach
