In the 1970s, a group of researchers got themselves deliberately confined to mental asylums across United States. They did this by pretending to hear voices. They pretended to hear a voice saying, Empty, Dull and Thud.
But as soon as they were admitted to the wards, they stopped pretending and never mention the voice again.
And here's the mad part
The hospital staff outright refused to believe they were better, and kept them locked up anyway - some of them for months on end -each forced into accepting they had a mental illness, and agreeing to take drugs as a condition of their release. This is what labels do. They stick. ~ Nathan Filer
Asylums quotes by Nathan Filer
I do not like the reappearance of the Jesuits ... Shall we not have regular swarms of them here, in as many disguises as only a king of the gipsies can assume, dressed as printers, publishers, writers and schoolmasters? If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in Hell, it is this society of Loyola's. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religious toleration to offer them an asylum. ~ John Adams
Asylums quotes by John Adams
There are different categories of madmen, and different types of asylums! I know absolutely nothing about the asylums that house the madman who thinks he is a space man. Would you believe that 90% of madmen are treated in outside clinics? ~ Stephen Richards
Asylums quotes by Stephen Richards
Lawsuits generally originate with the obstinate and the ignorant, but they do not end with them; and that lawyer was right who left all his money to the support of an asylum for fools and lunatics, saying that from such he got it, and to such he would bequeath it. ~ Jeremy Bentham
Asylums quotes by Jeremy Bentham
I will turn directly to the Asylum Bill later. ~ John Major
Asylums quotes by John Major
I was the outsider in Fernhall House, but they were all outsiders really. Outside society. Outside time. You hear people say that those in asylums and care facilities are out of their minds. But in truth their minds are often the one thing they are not out of. Their whole being is sheltering behind walls of muscle and bone. Everything they are - and are not - exists within their sacrosanct headspace. ~ Jonathan Lee
Asylums quotes by Jonathan Lee
Let me take once again a rough parable. Suppose I advertised in the papers that I had a place for any one who was too stupid to be a clerk. Probably I should receive no replies; possibly one. Possibly also (nay, probably) it would be from the one man who was not stupid at all. But suppose I had advertised that I had a place for any one who was too clever to be a clerk. My office would be instantly besieged by all the most hopeless fools in the four kingdoms. To advertise for exceptions is simply to advertise for egoists. To advertise for egoists is to advertise for idiots. It is exactly the bore who does think that his case is interesting. It is precisely the really common person who does think that his case is uncommon. It is always the dull man who does think himself rather wild. To ask solely for strange experiences of the soul is simply to let loose all the imbecile asylums about one's ears. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Asylums quotes by G.K. Chesterton
I believe at least in one of the chief tenets of the Christian faith
contentment with a lowly place. I am a doctor and I know that ambition
the desire to succeed
to have power
leads to most ills of the human soul. If the desire is realized it leads to arrogance, violence and final satiety; and if it is denied
ah! if it is denied
let all the asylums for the insane rise up and give their testimony! The are filled with human beings who were unable to face being mediocre, insignificant, ineffective and who therefore created for themselves ways of escape from reality so to be shut off from life itself forever. ~ Agatha Christie
Asylums quotes by Agatha Christie
Perhaps you have heard about the college executives who were discussing what they wanted to do after retirement age. One hoped to run a prison or school of correction so that the alumni would never come back to visit. Another chose to manage an orphan asylum so that he would not be plagued with advice from parents. ~ Robert H. Jackson
Asylums quotes by Robert H. Jackson
I think Hollywood has a class system. The actors are like the inmates, but the truth is they're running the asylum. ~ Robert De Niro
Asylums quotes by Robert De Niro
The mad were put in asylums, but the sane are worse off in their offices. ~ Hanif Kureishi
Asylums quotes by Hanif Kureishi
I hope to be granted asylum. Deportation [ from Germany] that would be a death sentence for me. ~ Irakli Okruashvili
Asylums quotes by Irakli Okruashvili
68. By then all poets will live in artistic communities calls jails or asylums. 69. Our imaginary home, the home we share. ~ Roberto Bolano
Asylums quotes by Roberto Bolano
Doubtless the lunatic asylums of the world are filled with unfortunate women who have failed to see my charms. ~ Cassandra Clare
Asylums quotes by Cassandra Clare
All boys belong in insane asylums. ~ Brandon Mull
Asylums quotes by Brandon Mull
Death, of course, is a refuge. It's where you go when a new name, or a mask and cape, can no longer hide you from yourself. It's where you run to when none of the principalities of your conscience will grant you asylum. ~ Chris Cleave
Asylums quotes by Chris Cleave
In his 1973 "literary investigation," The Gulag Archipelago, Solzhenitsyn exposed the practices of the Soviet penal system: "If the intellectuals in the plays of Chekhov who spent all their time guessing what would happen in twenty, thirty or forty years had been told that in forty years interrogation by torture would be practiced in Russia; that prisoners would have their skulls squeezed within iron rings, that a human being would be lowered into an acid bath; that they would be trussed up naked to be bitten by ants and bedbugs; that a ramrod heated over a primus stove would be thrust up their anal canal (the 'secret brand'); that a man's genitals would be slowly crushed beneath the toe of a jackboot; and that, in the luckiest possible circumstances, prisoners would be tortured by being kept from sleeping for a week, by thirst, and by being beaten to a bloody pulp, not one of Chekhov's plays would have gotten to its end because all the heroes would have gone off to insane asylums. ~ Donnie Eichar
Asylums quotes by Donnie Eichar
Times were tough and the people were harsh and the clergy were cruel-cruel, and you know it! The most natural thing in the world is giving birth; you built your whole religion around it. And yet you poured pitch onto girls like me and sold us into slavery and took our humanity away from us twice, a third time, as often as you could. I was lucky, Father. I was only sent away. A decade earlier and where would I have been? I might have died in your asylums, me with the smart mouth. I killed one man but you would have killed me in the name of your god, wouldn't you? How many did you kill? How many lives did you destroy with your morality and your Seal of Confession and your lies? Now. For the absolution. Once God knows you're sorry he lets you off the hook, isn't that right?

Me? Oh, Father. I know I'm sorry. What about you? Bless me Ireland for I have sinned. Go on, boy. No wonder you say infinitely God is brimming with the clemency, for how else would any of you bastards sleep at night? ~ Lisa McInerney
Asylums quotes by Lisa McInerney
Good care is taken that each state shall have its prisons ... and other asylums; but not one building is erected nor one law enforced that would teach the people how not to contribute to these over-crowded receptacles of human misery ... All of our politicians are ready to deal with the effects, but not one of them is brave enough to penetrate the substratum of society and deal with the cause. ~ Victoria Woodhull
Asylums quotes by Victoria Woodhull
In the West, the insane are so many that they are put in an asylum, in China the insane are so unusual that we worship them. ~ Lin Yutang
Asylums quotes by Lin Yutang
What is the most innocent place in any country? Is it not the insane asylum? These people drift through life truly innocent, unable to see into themselves at all. ~ Arthur Miller
Asylums quotes by Arthur Miller
Nietzsche said that the earth has been a madhouse long enough. Without contradicting him we might perhaps soften the expression, and say that philosophy has been long enough an asylum for enthusiasts. ~ George Santayana
Asylums quotes by George Santayana
I'm sitting in front of the TV, watching Jerry Springer, and it makes me think of how many mad people there are in the world, and whether everyone is mad deep down, they just pretend they're not, and it's the people in asylums or on Jerry Springer who are the honest ones. I have a notebook and a chewed-up pen, and I'm trying to think of a topic for the Youth Issues speech. Mrs Thomas says she thinks I have a lot to say, but I don't. Nothing I can put words to anyway. I could talk about bullying, or alcoholism, but I don't think I could speak about that out loud, it's too real, and it'd be like I was standing up there naked. More than naked. It would be like my skin was all peeled off and I was just standing there with my heart all bloody and thumping in my rib cage for everyone to see. ~ Megan Jacobson
Asylums quotes by Megan Jacobson
A man is called a good fellow for doing things which, if done by a woman, would land her in a lunatic asylum. ~ H.L. Mencken
Asylums quotes by H.L. Mencken
Humanity has gained its suit; Liberty will nevermore be without an asylum. ~ Marquis De Lafayette
Asylums quotes by Marquis De Lafayette
Asylums are nothing more than gardens of human cabbages, of miserable, grotesque, repugnant human beings watered with the fertilizer of injections. ~ Antonio Lobo Antunes
Asylums quotes by Antonio Lobo Antunes
The simplest way to attract a ghost was to sit quietly and open yourself up to the interactions. He'd seen those shows where a passel of tough guys ran around abandoned asylums and jails, hollering macho taunts at the spirits. There was a reason they rarely found any useful evidence or got more than a banging door for their troubles: ghosts didn't answer to shitheels. ~ Lauren M. Roy
Asylums quotes by Lauren M. Roy
I remember to this day how easily I could grasp what he called his tentative ideas when he talked about the architectural style of the capitalist era, a subject which he said had fascinated him since his own student days, speaking in particular of the compulsive sense of order and the tendency towards monumentalism evident in law courts and penal institutions, railway stations and stock exchanges, opera houses and lunatic asylums, and the dwelling built to rectangular grid patterns for the labor force. ~ W.G. Sebald
Asylums quotes by W.G. Sebald
For me, stripping was an unusual kind of escape. I had nothing to escape but privilege, but I claimed asylum anyway. At twenty-four, it was my last chance to reject something and become nothing. I wanted to terrify myself. Mission accomplished. ~ Diablo Cody
Asylums quotes by Diablo Cody
I spent hours yesterday talking of little but medical symptoms and insane asylums. And you listened as though it were poetry and all but swooned at my feet. It is too bad I don't have any medical treatises about. I'm sure I need read a paragraph or two, and you will become ravenous with lust and begin tearing my clothes off. (Dorian from "The Mad Earl's Bride") ~ Loretta Chase
Asylums quotes by Loretta Chase
This stuff they are talking here in Congress costs the people of the United States $44 a page. That's beside what it costs to ship it to the asylums where it's read. ~ Will Rogers
Asylums quotes by Will Rogers
I would be happy to accept asylum, political asylum, in India a nation I love. In return, I will bring Mayawati a range of the finest British footwear. ~ Julian Assange
Asylums quotes by Julian Assange
My 'go to' workout is called the Asylum from Beach Body. It's intense training with lots of intervals, core work. It's hard! I travel a lot, so I can take it on the road with me and do it in a hotel room. ~ Apolo Ohno
Asylums quotes by Apolo Ohno
There is no such thing as a pure extrovert or a pure introvert. Such a man would be in the lunatic asylum. ~ Carl Jung
Asylums quotes by Carl Jung
When commenting on the turmoil and disorder of the world, If the other planets are inhabited, they must be using this earth as their insane asylum. ~ George Bernard Shaw
Asylums quotes by George Bernard Shaw
May our land be a land of liberty, the seat of virtue, the asylum of the oppressed, a name and a praise in the whole Earth, until the last shock of time shall bury the empires of the whole world in one common undistinguished ruin! ~ Joseph Warren
Asylums quotes by Joseph Warren
When a man says that he is perfect already, there is only one of two places for him, and that is heaven or the lunatic asylum. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Asylums quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
They're caught where there's no way out or where you can't see out. What are you going to do about it? I don't have the answer. If I did there would be no insane asylums. ~ Ric Ocasek
Asylums quotes by Ric Ocasek
Society is an insane asylum ran by the inmates. ~ Erving Goffman
Asylums quotes by Erving Goffman
Christianity has made more lunatics than it ever provided asylums for. ~ Robert Green Ingersoll
Asylums quotes by Robert Green Ingersoll
All these things - Factories, asylums, prisons, schools still exist and will no doubt continue to exist for an indefinite period as warning signs, to divert the reality of the domination of capital into an imaginary materiality. There have always been churches to hide the death of God, or to hide the fact that the God is everywhere, which amounts to the same thing. ~ Jean Baudrillard
Asylums quotes by Jean Baudrillard
In the early days of his reign, Bismarck confided to a friend that it would some day be necessary for Germany to confine William II in an insane asylum. ~ Kelly Miller
Asylums quotes by Kelly Miller
The last thing in the world someone should do is respond to critics. If I did that I'd be neutered by now
I would be in the nearest insane asylum wearing 15 straitjackets. My whole career has been nothing but: You shouldn't do it that way, you bigot, you sexist, you homophobe, you pig, you right-wing warmonger, you whatever. ~ Rush Limbaugh
Asylums quotes by Rush Limbaugh
I had, toward the last, been shut off from all visitors, and so when the lawyer, Peter A. Hendricks, came and told me that friends of mine were willing to take charge of me if I would rather be with them than in the asylum, I was only too glad to give my consent. ~ Nellie Bly
Asylums quotes by Nellie Bly
But that is who we are, that is where we come from. We are the offspring of metropolitan annihilation and destruction, of the war of all against all, of the conflict of each individual with every other individual, of a system governed by fear, of the compulsion to produce, of the profit of one to the detriment of others, of the division of people into men and women, young and old, sick and healthy, foreigners and Germans, and of the struggle for prestige. Where do we come from? From isolation in individual row-houses, from the suburban concrete cities, from prison cells, from the asylums and special units, from media brainwashing, from consumerism, from corporal punishment, from the ideology of nonviolence, from depression, from illness, from degradation, from humiliation, from the debasement of human beings, from all the people exploited by imperialism. ~ Ulrike Marie Meinhof
Asylums quotes by Ulrike Marie Meinhof
Our asylum system is sick. ~ Romano L. Mazzoli
Asylums quotes by Romano L. Mazzoli
I think the big danger of madness is not madness itself, but the habit of madness. What I discovered during the time I spent in the asylum is that I could choose madness and spend my whole life without working, doing nothing, pretending to be mad. It was a very strong temptation.. ~ Paulo Coelho
Asylums quotes by Paulo Coelho
Well they're very, very genuine concerns at present as to the status of the 800 people who are to be sent by Australia to Malaysia. There's concern about the status of asylum seekers in Malaysia generally, but there's concern about the status of the 800 to be sent. ~ Julie Bishop
Asylums quotes by Julie Bishop
If we, who live outside asylums, act as if we lived in a fictitious world- that is to say, if we are consistent with our beliefs- we cannot adjust ourselves to actual conditions, and so fall into many avoidable semantic difficulties. But the so-called normal person practically never abides by his beliefs, and when his beliefs are building for him a fictitious world, he saves his neck by not abiding by them. A so-called "insane" person acts upon his beliefs, and so cannot adjust himself to a world which is quite different from his fancy. ~ Alfred Korzybski
Asylums quotes by Alfred Korzybski
With savages, the weak in body or mind are soon eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit a vigorous state of health. We civilised men, on the other hand, do our utmost to check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, the maimed, and the sick; we institute poor-laws; and our medical men exert their utmost skill to save the life of every one to the last moment. There is reason to believe that vaccination has preserved thousands, who from a weak constitution would formerly have succumbed to small-pox. Thus the weak members of civilised societies propagate their kind. No one who has attended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must be highly injurious to the race of man. It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man himself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed.

The aid which we feel impelled to give to the helpless is mainly an incidental result of the instinct of sympathy, which was originally acquired as part of the social instincts, but subsequently rendered, in the manner previously indicated, more tender and more widely diffused. Nor could we check our sympathy, if so urged by hard reason, without deterioration in the noblest part of our nature. The surgeon may harden himself whilst performing an operation, for he knows that he is acting for the good of his patient; but if we we ~ Charles Darwin
Asylums quotes by Charles Darwin
cloak of secrecy: the private asylums and single-lodging establishments, both ~ Catherine Bailey
Asylums quotes by Catherine Bailey
Civilization today reminds me of an ape with a blowtorch playing in a room full of dynamite. It looks like the monkeys are about to operate the zoo, and the inmates are taking over the asylum. ~ Vance Havner
Asylums quotes by Vance Havner
Happy, thrice happy shall they be pronounced hereafter, who have contributed any thing, who have performed the meanest office in erecting this stupendous fabrick of Freedom and Empire on the broad basis of Independency; who have assisted in protecting the rights of humane nature and establishing an Asylum for the poor and oppressed of all nations and religions. ~ George Washington
Asylums quotes by George Washington
The world's full of people with unusual beliefs, Julia. Scientologists, Rastafarians, Catholics, Moonies, Mormons, Baptists, Tories, dentists, captains of industry - every madness has its cheerleader. The asylums and parliament are crammed full of delusionists, and only a madman would want to eliminate them. ~ Hanif Kureishi
Asylums quotes by Hanif Kureishi
We cannot treat people with a right to asylum the same way as people from a safe country. They need to be sent back. That is, from our perspective, completely clear. On the other hand, we should scrutinize the now completely outdated principle that only the migrants' first country of arrival should be burdened with their registration as well as with the process of sorting out who has the right to asylum and who needs to be deported. ~ Paolo Gentiloni
Asylums quotes by Paolo Gentiloni
America is a lunatic asylum. ~ Ezra Pound
Asylums quotes by Ezra Pound
Earth is the insane asylum of the universe. ~ Albert Einstein
Asylums quotes by Albert Einstein
To go into acting is like asking for admission to an insane asylum. Anyone may apply, but only the certifiably insane are admitted. ~ Michael Shurtleff
Asylums quotes by Michael Shurtleff
On the other hand, I must mention that, by a diligent search in lunatic asylums, I have found individual cases of patients who where unquestionably endowed with great talents, and whose genius distinctly appeared through their madness, which, however, had completely gained the upper hand. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Asylums quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
can tell you. I know of men who believe in themselves more colossally than Napoleon or Caesar. I know where flames the fixed star of certainty and success. I can guide you to the thrones of the Super-men. The men who really believe in themselves are all in lunatic asylums." He said mildly that there ~ G.K. Chesterton
Asylums quotes by G.K. Chesterton
And a united Europe will also manage to send hundreds of thousands of migrants, who don't have the right to asylum, back to their homelands. Though that, given the number of flights necessary, would be of a scale reminiscent of the Berlin Airlift. ~ Paolo Gentiloni
Asylums quotes by Paolo Gentiloni
Communism is as crude an attempt to explain society and the individual as if a surgeon were to perform his delicate operations with a meat ax. All that is subtle in human psychology and in the structure of society (which is even more complex), all of this is reduced to crude economic processes. The whole created being - man - is reduced to matter. It is characteristic that Communism is so devoid of arguments that it has none to advance against its opponents in our Communist countries. It lacks arguments and hence there is the club, the prison, the concentration camp, and insane asylums with forced confinement. ~ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Asylums quotes by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Hollywood-a place where the inmates are in charge of the asylum. ~ Laurence Stallings
Asylums quotes by Laurence Stallings
The most dangerous thing of all, and something he wanted to warn me about above all else, the one thing that had consigned whole regiments of unfortunate young people to the twilight world of insanity, was reading books. This objectionable practice had increased among the younger generation, and Dad was more pleased than the could say to not that I had not yet displayed any such tendencies. Lunatic asylums were overflowing with folk who'd been reading too much. Once upon a time they'd been just like you and me, physically strong, straightforward, cheerful, and well balanced. Then they'd started reading. Most often by chance. A bout of flu perhaps, with a few days in bed. An attractive book cover that had aroused some curiosity. And suddenly the bad habit had taken hold. The first book had led to another. Then another, and another, all links in a chain that led straight down into the eternal night of mental illness. It was impossible to stop. It was worse than drugs.

It might just be possible, if you were very careful, to look at the occasional book that could teach you something, such as encyclopedias or repair manuals. The most dangerous kind of book was fiction-- that's where all the brooding was sparked and encouraged. Damnit all! Addictive and risky products like that should only be available in state-regulated monopoly stores, rationed and sold only to those with a license, and mature in age. ~ Mikael Niemi
Asylums quotes by Mikael Niemi
Wasn't that awesome?" Seth asked.
Warren cocked his head, his expression mildly embarrassed. "I'm sorry, Kendra
it was pretty cool."
"All boys belong in insane asylums," Kendra said. ~ Brandon Mull
Asylums quotes by Brandon Mull
America is an insane asylum run by the inmates. ~ Lester Roloff
Asylums quotes by Lester Roloff
All the asylum clothing is made by the patients, but sewing does not employ one's mind. After several months' confinement the thoughts of the busy world grow faint, and all the poor prisoners can do is to sit and ponder over their hopeless fate. ~ Nellie Bly
Asylums quotes by Nellie Bly
By a 'silly' theory I mean one which may be held at the time when one is talking or writing professionally, but which only an inmate of a lunatic asylum would think of carrying into daily life ... It must not be supposed that the men who maintain these theories and beliefs are 'silly' people. Only very acute and learned men could have thought of anything so odd or defended anything so preposterous against the continual protests of common sense. ~ C. D. Broad
Asylums quotes by C. D. Broad
When Švejk subsequently described life in the lunatic asylum, he did so in exceptionally eulogistic terms: 'I really don't know why those loonies get so angry when they're kept there. You can crawl naked on the floor, howl like a jackal, rage and bite. If anyone did this anywhere on the promenade people would be astonished, but there it's the most common or garden thing to do. There's a freedom there which not even Socialists have ever dreamed of. ~ Jaroslav Hasek
Asylums quotes by Jaroslav Hasek
Many people think it's in bad taste to advertise for an insane asylum ... but come on down. We're going crazy. ~ Colin Mochrie
Asylums quotes by Colin Mochrie
When I cease to preach salvation by faith in Jesus put me into a lunatic asylum, for you may be sure that my mind is gone. ~ Charles Spurgeon
Asylums quotes by Charles Spurgeon
Everybody likes to have a place to think, to meditate, to eat a burrito ... ~ Sherman Alexie
Asylums quotes by Sherman Alexie
Normal people don't wall their wives up in insane asylums. They don't disinherit their sons because they didn't get the child they wanted. ~ Leigh Bardugo
Asylums quotes by Leigh Bardugo
The world's most brilliant confabulators are in asylums. ~ Stephen King
Asylums quotes by Stephen King
The message that "we can't take in everybody" is imperative. At the same time, the decision as to who has a right to asylum needs to be made in Brussels. ~ Paolo Gentiloni
Asylums quotes by Paolo Gentiloni
3 people get stranded on a remote Island
A Banker, a Daily Mail reader & an Asylum seeker
All they have to eat is a box of 10 Mars bars
The Banker says "Because of my expertise in asset management, I'll look after our resources"
The other 2 agree
So the Banker opens the box, gobbles down 9 of the Mars bars and hands the last one to the Daily Mail reader
He then says " I'd keep an eye on that Asylum seeker, he's after your Mars Bar ~ Christopher Brookmyre
Asylums quotes by Christopher Brookmyre
And what is an authentic madman? It is a man who preferred to become mad, in the socially accepted sense of the word, rather than forfeit a certain superior idea of human honor. So society has strangled in its asylums all those it wanted to get rid of or protect itself from, because they refused to become its accomplices in certain great nastinesses. For a madman is also a man whom society did not want to hear and whom it wanted to prevent from uttering certain intolerable truths. ~ Antonin Artaud
Asylums quotes by Antonin Artaud
It seems as though I were in a lunatic asylum, but I am never sure who is the attendant and who the inmate. ~ James Bryant Conant
Asylums quotes by James Bryant Conant
So society has strangled in its asylums all those it wanted to get rid of or protect itself from, because they refused to become its accomplices in certain great nastiness. ~ Antonin Artaud
Asylums quotes by Antonin Artaud
I am certain that a Sewing Machine would relieve as much human suffering as a hundred Lunatic Asylums, and possibly a good deal more. ~ Margaret Atwood
Asylums quotes by Margaret Atwood
Most of Arbus's work lies within the Warhol aesthetic, that is, defines itself in relation to the twin poles of boringness and freakishness; but it doesn't have the Warhol style. Arbus had neither Warhol's narcissism and genius for publicity nor the self-protective blandness with which he insulates himself from the freaky nor his sentimentality. It is unlikey that Warhol, who comes from a working-class family, ever felt any ambivalence toward success which afflicted the children of the Jewish upper middle classes in the 1960s. To someone raised as a Catholic, like Warhol (and virtually everyone in his gang), a fascination with evil comes much more genuinely than it does to someone from a Jewish background. Compared with Warhol, Arbus seems strikingly vulnerable, innocent--and certainly more pessimistic. Her Dantesque vision of the city (and the suburbs) has no reserves of irony. Although much of Arbus's material is the same as that depicted in, say, Warhol's Chelsea Girls (1966)...For Arbus, both freaks and Middle America were equally exotic: a boy marching in a pro-war parade and a Levittown housewife were as alien as a dwarf or a transvestite; lower-middle-class suburbia was as remote as Times Square, lunatic asylums, and gay bars. Arbus's work expressed her turn against what was public (as she experienced it), conventional, safe, reassuring--and boring--in favor of what was private, hidden, ugly, dangerous, and fascinating. These contrasts, now, seem almost quaint. What is ~ Susan Sontag
Asylums quotes by Susan Sontag
Life is not a static thing. The only people who do not change their minds are incompetents in asylums, and those in cemeteries. ~ Everett Dirksen
Asylums quotes by Everett Dirksen
If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers. ~ E.W. Howe
Asylums quotes by E.W. Howe
If I were to say what I really think I would be arrested or shut away in a lunatic asylum. Come on, I am sure that it would be the same for everyone. ~ Roberto Bolano
Asylums quotes by Roberto Bolano
Each of us is armed with this touchstone of actuality; by applying it we decide that this sorry world of ours is actual and Utopia is a dream. As our individual consciousnesses are different, so our touchstones are different; but fortunately they all agree in their indication of actuality - or at any rate those which agree are in sufficient majority to shut the others up in lunatic asylums. ~ Arthur Stanley Eddington
Asylums quotes by Arthur Stanley Eddington
Friendship is like those ancient altars where the unhappy, and even the guilty, found a sure asylum. ~ Sophie Swetchine
Asylums quotes by Sophie Swetchine
Earth is an insane asylum, to which the other planets deport their lunatics. ~ Voltaire
Asylums quotes by Voltaire
The most threatened group in human societies as in animal societies is the unmated male: the unmated male is more likely to wind up in prison or in an asylum or dead than his mated counterpart. He is less likely to be promoted at work and he is considered a poor credit risk. ~ Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Asylums quotes by Richard Brinsley Sheridan
The longer I live the more convinced I become that one of the greatest honors we can confer on other people is to see them as they are, to recognize not only that they exist, but that they exist in specific ways and have specific realities. ~ V.S. Naipaul
Asylums quotes by V.S. Naipaul
If artists do see fields blue they are deranged, and should go to an asylum. If they only pretend to see them blue, they are criminals and should go to prison. ~ Adolf Hitler
Asylums quotes by Adolf Hitler
Let's say you went to Harvard or Oxford or Cambridge, and you said, 'I've come here because I'm in search of morality, guidance and consolation; I want to know how to live,' - they would show you the way to the insane asylum. ~ Alain De Botton
Asylums quotes by Alain De Botton
Sometimes ... sometimes I think the Asylum is a head. We're inside a huge head that dreams us all into being. Perhaps it's your head, Batman. Arkham is a looking glass ... and we are you. ~ Grant Morrison
Asylums quotes by Grant Morrison
But a predominantly scientific and technological education, such as is the usual thing nowadays, can also bring about a spiritual regression and a considerable increase of psychic dissociation. With hygiene and prosperity alone a man is still far from health, otherwise the most enlightened and most comfortably off among us would be the healthiest. But in regard to neuroses that is not the case at all, quite the contrary. Loss of roots and lack of tradition neuroticize the masses and prepare them for collective hysteria. Collective hysteria calls for collective therapy, which consists in abolition of liberty and terrorization. Where rationalistic materialism holds sway, states tend to develop less into prisons than into lunatic asylums. ~ C.G. Jung
Asylums quotes by C.G. Jung
The men who really believe in themselves are all in lunatic asylums. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Asylums quotes by G.K. Chesterton
The insane asylum on Blackwell's Island is a human rat-trap. It is easy to get in, but once there it is impossible to get out. ~ Nellie Bly
Asylums quotes by Nellie Bly
Enforced maternity brings into the world wretched infants, whom their parents will be unable to support and who will become the victims of public care or 'child martyrs'. It must be pointed out that our society, so concerned to defend the rights of the embryo, shows no interest in the children once they are born; it prosecutes the abortionists instead of undertaking to reform that scandalous institution known as 'public assistance'; those responsible for entrusting the children to their torturers are allowed to go free; society closes its eyes to the frightful tyranny of brutes in children's asylums and private foster homes. ~ Simone De Beauvoir
Asylums quotes by Simone De Beauvoir
