If one cannot see gravitation acting here, he has no soul. ~ Richard Feynman
Star Cluster quotes by Richard Feynman
We cannot repeat too often the great lesson of freudian psychology: that repression is normal self-protection and creative self-restriction-in a real sense, man's natural substitute for instinct. Rank has a perfect, key term for this natural human talent: he calls it "partialization" and very rightly sees that life is impossible without it. What we call the well-adjusted man has just this capacity to partialize the world for comfortable action. I have used the term "fetishization," which is exactly the same idea: the "normal" man bites off what he can chew and digest of life, and no more. In other words, men aren't built to be gods, to take in the whole world; they are built like other creatures, to take in the piece of ground in front of their noses. Gods can take in the whole of creation because they alone can make sense of it, know what it is all about and for. But as soon as a man lifts his nose from the ground and starts sniffing at eternal problems like life and death, the meaning of a rose or a star cluster-then he is in trouble. Most men spare themselves this trouble by keeping their minds on the small problems of their lives just as their society maps these problems out for them. These are what Kierkegaard called the "immediate" men and the "Philistines." They "tranquilize themselves with the trivial"- and so they can lead normal lives. ~ Ernest Becker
Star Cluster quotes by Ernest Becker
Abolish these categories of pain
(or is it love)
Let it all be one pain
Pain swallows itself, dies like a star. ~ Alice Notley
Star Cluster quotes by Alice Notley
Acting is the developing of one's own personality, too, you know. That's what the public buys in a star, shall we say, the personality thing. ~ Shelley Winters
Star Cluster quotes by Shelley Winters
Till Elizabeth entered the drawing-room at Netherfield, and looked in vain for Mr. Wickham among the cluster of red coats there assembled, a doubt of his being present had never occurred to her. The certainty of meeting him had not been checked by any of those recollections that might not unreasonably have alarmed her. She had dressed with more than usual care, and prepared in the highest spirits for the conquest of all that remained unsubdued of his heart, trusting that it was not more than might be won in the course of the evening. But in an instant arose the dreadful suspicion of his being purposely omitted for Mr. Darcy's pleasure in the Bingleys' invitation to the officers; and though this was not exactly the case, the absolute fact of his absence was pronounced by his friend Denny, to whom Lydia eagerly applied, and who told them that Wickham had been obliged to go to town on business the day before, and was not yet returned; adding, with a significant smile, "I do not imagine his business would have called him away just now, if he had not wanted to avoid a certain gentleman here. ~ Jane Austen
Star Cluster quotes by Jane Austen
Just as today science recognizes the constant recurrence of simple, tiny atomic particles in all sort of organized matter, our ancestors had the intuition that there was a secret rhythm in Nature which was the same in every single natural manifestation. A crane dance must mirror star dances, and human dance is an alphabet to decipher the unknown. ~ Pippa Pralen
Star Cluster quotes by Pippa Pralen
I wrote 'Snowy' as a result of spending a week on a narrow boat with daily classes of children, helping them to write about canal life, the work of barges, the simple pleasure of watching the water creatures. There was no doubt that the star of their week was Snowy, the working barge horse who pulled us daily along the towpath. ~ Berlie Doherty
Star Cluster quotes by Berlie Doherty
Throughout history, people in all cultures and lands have gathered together at mealtimes. In forests and mountains, in humble abodes and great mansions, beneath star filled skies and beside hearths, people have given thanks, and offered their blessings. ~ John Robbins
Star Cluster quotes by John Robbins
Be brave, young lovers, and follow your star. ~ Oscar Hammerstein II
Star Cluster quotes by Oscar Hammerstein II
In 1996 Hubacek had been driving drunk at 100 mph with no headlights. He crashed into a van carrying a married couple and their nanny. The husband and the nanny were killed. Poe sentenced Hubacek to 110 days of boot camp, and to carry a sign once a month for ten years in front of high schools and bars that read, I KILLED TWO PEOPLE WHILE DRIVING DRUNK, and to erect a cross and a Star of David at the scene of the crash and to keep it maintained, and to keep photographs of the victims in his wallet for ten years, and to send $10 every week for ten years to a memorial fund in the names of the victims, and to observe the autopsy of a person killed in a drink-driving accident. ~ Jon Ronson
Star Cluster quotes by Jon Ronson
Sometimes the one who dreams about Fairies mingles with the soul of the house. The thought of the hedges outside the door has stopped the ticking of the clock, and from the cellar the song of hidden woods can be heard. From deep down in the well he awakens the fibers of the beams, casts a spell on the floor boards and penetrates deep into the tapestry. He sits down in the child's room where the garden of things tells a story about the theater of shadows. His thoughts are infused in a kettle and illustrated in a spiral of steam. The armchair flies out of the window and the curtains begin to flower. He can be heard climbing the stairs, leaving behind handfuls of visiting cards, and on each one of them is the address of a star. In the attic, his step is reduced to the dance of mice. A wreath of sparks brightens up the fireplace. The dormer window looks out onto the hopscotch of the skies… The dreamer's soul is now so brilliant and light that it is like a spangle in a parade of Fairies ~ Pierre Dubois
Star Cluster quotes by Pierre Dubois
Here and there, set into the somber red, were rivers of bright yellow - incandescent Amazons, meandering for thousands of miles before they lost themselves in the deserts of this dying sun. Dying? No - that was a wholly false impression, born of human experience and the emotions aroused by the hues of sunset, or the glow of fading embers. This was a star that had left behind the fiery extravagances of its youth, had raced through the violets and blues and greens of the spectrum in a few fleeting billions of years, and now had settled down to a peaceful maturity of unimaginable length. All that had gone before was not a thousandth of what was yet to come; the story of this star had barely begun. ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Star Cluster quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
You may kill me here; but you cannot make me go back. ~ Morning Star
Star Cluster quotes by Morning Star
Should we continue to look upwards? Is the light we can see in the sky one of those which will presently be extinguished? The ideal is terrifying to behold ... brilliant but threatened on all sides by the dark forces that surround it: nevertheless, no more in danger than a star in the jaws of the clouds. ~ Victor Hugo
Star Cluster quotes by Victor Hugo
After doing STAR TREK for so many years, to do just regular makeup is such a treat. Just put some makeup on and "thank you very much," you're on your way. ~ Michael Dorn
Star Cluster quotes by Michael Dorn
I was a comic book nut and grew up on 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones.' ~ Christian Borle
Star Cluster quotes by Christian Borle
KM: Yes. Mrs. Lopez, she's human. And you know, clearly, she'd like people to show some appreciation for her hard work. But if people just, you know, take her pie and don't even say, "Hey, nice pie," they just scarf it down or whatever-
MH: I could see how that would get to be annoying. I mean, if you're constantly providing ... pie. And getting no positive feedback-
KM: Right! And what about your future? I mean, how do you know people are still going to want your pie in the future? Supposing they become a famous rock star or something. People are going to be offering them pie all over the place. If they haven't promised only to eat your pie, well, where does that leave you? ~ Meg Cabot
Star Cluster quotes by Meg Cabot
Change is the nature of nature,'" she read. "'For example, stars expand as they grow older. They grow from a star, to a red super-giant, to a supernova. When a massive star explodes at the end of its life, the explosion dispenses different elements-helium, carbon, oxygen, iron, nickel-across the universe, scattering starduest. That stardust now makes up the planets, including ours. ~ Michelle Cuevas
Star Cluster quotes by Michelle Cuevas
If I shoot at the sun, I may hit a star. ~ P.T. Barnum
Star Cluster quotes by P.T. Barnum
Everyone who has changed the course of human history, every last one was able to do so only because he was ready for his destiny. That's true of Moses and the Buddha, Napoleon and Bismarck. The wave that carries us, the star that guides us - we cannot choose it. ~ Hermann Hesse
Star Cluster quotes by Hermann Hesse
The shining star in the world is Shanghai. That's what CEOs from big companies say - 'if I want mathematical analytical work done, it's done in China.' ~ Hans Rosling
Star Cluster quotes by Hans Rosling
I don't take myself seriously all the time; I have to do quirky things, such as helping football teams, moving the ball away from McAllister's foot, getting into The Sun and The Star - because, you know, I like sensationalism, it's a part of what I do. ~ Uri Geller
Star Cluster quotes by Uri Geller
But some of us are beginning to pull well away, in our irritation, from ... the exquisite tasters, the vintage snobs, the three-star Michelin gourmets. There is, we feel, a decent area somewhere between boiled carrots and Beluga caviare, sour plonk and Chateau Lafitte, where we can take care of our gullets and bellies without worshipping them. ~ J.B. Priestley
Star Cluster quotes by J.B. Priestley
Perhaps I ought to remember that she is very young, a mere girl and make allowances. She is all interest, eagerness, vivacity, the world is to her a charm, a wonder, a mystery, a joy; she can't speak for delight when she finds a new flower, she must pet it and caress it and smell it and talk to it, and pour out endearing names upon it. And she is color-mad: brown rocks, yellow sand, gray moss, green foliage, blue sky; the pearl of the dawn, the purple shadows on the mountains, the golden islands floating in crimson seas at sunset, the pallid moon sailing through the shredded cloud-rack, the star-jewels glittering in the wastes of space - none of them is of any practical value, so far as I can see, but because they have color and majesty, that is enough for her, and she loses her mind over them. If she could quiet down and keep still a couple of minutes at a time, it would be a reposeful spectacle. In that cases I think I could enjoy looking at her; indeed I am sure I could, for I am coming to realize that she is a quite remarkably comely creature - lithe, slender, trim, rounded, shapely, nimble, graceful; and once when she was standing marble-white and sun-drenched on a boulder, with her young head tilted back and her hand shading her eyes, watching the flight of a bird in the sky, I recognized that she was beautiful. ~ Mark Twain
Star Cluster quotes by Mark Twain
What's amazing is that I'm recognized all over the world through 'Red Dwarf.' British fans are exceptional, but the American fans are something else. Some of them fly 500 miles to stand in line for three hours, just to meet me, then when they do they collapse. It makes you feel like a rock star! ~ Craig Charles
Star Cluster quotes by Craig Charles
During my first few months of Facebooking, I discovered that my page had fostered a collective nostalgia for specific cultural icons. These started, unsurprisingly, within the realm of science fiction and fantasy. They commonly included a pointy-eared Vulcan from a certain groundbreaking 1960s television show.

Just as often, though, I found myself sharing images of a diminutive, ancient, green and disarmingly wise Jedi Master who speaks in flip-side down English. Or, if feeling more sinister, I'd post pictures of his black-cloaked, dark-sided, heavy-breathing nemesis. As an aside, I initially received from Star Trek fans considerable "push-back," or at least many raised Spock brows, when I began sharing images of Yoda and Darth Vader. To the purists, this bordered on sacrilege.. But as I like to remind fans, I was the only actor to work within both franchises, having also voiced the part of Lok Durd from the animated show Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

It was the virality of these early posts, shared by thousands of fans without any prodding from me, that got me thinking. Why do we love Spock, Yoda and Darth Vader so much? And what is it about characters like these that causes fans to click "like" and "share" so readily?

One thing was clear: Cultural icons help people define who they are today because they shaped who they were as children. We all "like" Yoda because we all loved The Empire Strikes Back, probably watched it many times, and can reci ~ George Takei
Star Cluster quotes by George Takei
Abbey: Did you speak to me in a different language? When I was in the hospital?
Caspian: Something to keep the nightmares at bay. To let you know I was there. Tu sei una stella ... la mia stella. It means 'You're a star. My star. ~ Jessica Verday
Star Cluster quotes by Jessica Verday
Everywhere I go, there are all these Big Star freaks, and they're nice little guys who are usually in college, and they're kind of lonely and misunderstood, learning to play guitar. ~ Alex Chilton
Star Cluster quotes by Alex Chilton
He didn't know what was hotter, her Star Wars reference or the breathiness with which she spoke it. ~ Kelly Moran
Star Cluster quotes by Kelly Moran
She walks the earth freely, yet her feet never touch the ground. Many hands will reach for her, but she cannot be anchored. She belongs to no one, to nothing, to nowhere. When you meet her, you will recognize her for what she is--a free spirit, a wandering star. She will fit in your arms like she was made to be there. And she will show you what it means to hold something you can never hold on to. ~ Lang Leav
Star Cluster quotes by Lang Leav
Teagan - "What is it?"
Garreth - "No one's ever prayed for me before. I've always heard your prayers. You prayed for me to come to you when you had a bad dream. I even heard you pray for a perfect, selfless, superwonderful boy to fall in love with. But I've never heard you pray for me. ~ Jennifer Murgia
Star Cluster quotes by Jennifer Murgia
When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and princes are home,
when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost,
to heal the broken,
to feed the hungry,
to release the prisoner,
to rebuild the nations,
to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart. ~ Howard Thurman
Star Cluster quotes by Howard Thurman
The indefatigable pursuit of an unattainable perfection, even though it consists in nothing more than in the pounding of an old piano, is what alone gives a meaning to our life on this unavailing star. ~ Logan Pearsall Smith
Star Cluster quotes by Logan Pearsall Smith
But, you know, you can't be a star at home. ~ Jim Carrey
Star Cluster quotes by Jim Carrey
Like the North Star, you've been the constant in my life. You've been my companion in good and bad, my support in happy and sad, while distance fulfilled its role with utmost dexterity… the role of strengthening our foundation for seven years of a long-distance affair! I could always see your face, deep in the cove by the clamouring sea of distance… every time I closed my eyes. ~ Debalina Haldar
Star Cluster quotes by Debalina Haldar
Bruce Lee was the first star I idolized. Growing up as a Chinese American, there weren't many people like me on the big screen. ~ Daniel Wu
Star Cluster quotes by Daniel Wu
Gene Autry was a pioneering star in the early days of music, radio, film, television and rodeo performances. I am proud to posthumously honor such an inspiring role model ~ Adam Schiff
Star Cluster quotes by Adam Schiff
I've always liked you, from the first moment I saw you at the Pigafetta Stadium." He kept his distance because he wanted her too much. "And ever since that day, I knew that you were in love with another guy, and that he would sooner or later feel the same way I did." Cutting ties with her was excruciatingly painful. "I just hoped that he would be stupid enough to let me have you," he gasped. "But he wasn't. ~ Mirella Muffarotto
Star Cluster quotes by Mirella Muffarotto
I'm going to be a star some day," she announced as though daring him to contradict her.
"I'm sure you ... "
"It's my life. It's the only thing in the whole world that I want."
"It's good to know what you want. I used to be a bookkeeper in a hotel,
but ... "
"If I'm not, I'll commit suicide. ~ Nathanael West
Star Cluster quotes by Nathanael West
Big Star invented a vision of bohemian rock & roll cool that had nothing to do with New York, Los Angeles or London, which made them completely out of style in the 1970s, but also made them an inspiration to generations of weird Southern kids. ~ Rob Sheffield
Star Cluster quotes by Rob Sheffield
I considered the years in Hollywood nothing but an interim. What I always wanted was to be was a musical comedy star. ~ Arlene Dahl
Star Cluster quotes by Arlene Dahl
Our love- a dead star
to the world it burns brightly-

But it died long ago. ~ Lang Leav
Star Cluster quotes by Lang Leav
To create a new universal idea is to create a new star in the universe! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Star Cluster quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
There was a star riding through clouds one night, & I said to the star, 'Consume me'. ~ Virginia Woolf
Star Cluster quotes by Virginia Woolf
When you start becoming a pop star, you think, Hold on a second, maybe my life is different now - maybe all these people that I thought of as celebrities are going to be normal, and when I walk into a room I'm going to be really cool and so is everyone else. But that's not what happens at all - I was awkward, and then I just retreated from any social engagement for about a year. ~ Matthew Healy
Star Cluster quotes by Matthew Healy
I was desperately clinging to a scrap of wood that had been swept away. In pitch-black darkness, not a single star, or the moon, visible in the sky. As long as I clung to that piece of wood I wouldn't drown, but I had no clue where I was, where I was heading. ~ Haruki Murakami
Star Cluster quotes by Haruki Murakami
The point at which we worked with some of these actors, they weren't really stars yet. Nicolas Cage was not a big star when we did Raising Arizona. A lot of these people were also virtually unknown, too, when we worked with them first. ~ Joel Coen
Star Cluster quotes by Joel Coen
I wanted to be Anthony Hopkins and ended up being neither a film star nor having a career on the stage. ~ Dirk Benedict
Star Cluster quotes by Dirk Benedict
I was hedging. I had no idea about what would happen if I told him something about the future.
Like that Siena would face a plague within a few years. And that Florence would eventually rule them.
What would happen if I let such things slip? All sorts of time/space continuum stuff might come crashing down. Or maybe it wouldn't.
I should've watched more Star Trek as a kid. ~ Lisa Tawn Bergren
