For the first time in his life, Midhat wished he were more religious. Of course he prayed, but though that was a private mechanism it sometimes felt like a public act, and the lessons of the Quran were lessons by rote, one was steeped in them, hearing them so often. They were the texture of his world, and yet they did not occupy that central, vital part of his mind, the part that was vibrating at this moment, on this train, rattling forward while he struggled to hold all these pieces. As a child he had felt some of the same curiosity he held for the mysteries of other creeds - for Christianity with its holy fire, the Samaritans with their alphabets - but that feeling had dulled while he was still young, when traditional religion began to seem a worldly thing, a realm of morals and laws and the same old stories and holidays. They were acts, not thoughts. He faced the water now along the coast, steadying his gaze on the slow distance, beyond the blur of trees pushing past the tracks, on the desolate fishing boats hobbling over the waves. He sensed himself tracing the lip of something very large, something black and well-like, a vessel which was at the same time an emptiness, and he thought, without thinking precisely, only feeling with the tender edges of his mind, what the Revelation might have been for in its origin. Why it was so important that they could argue to the sword what it meant if God had hands, and whether He had made the universe. Underneath it all was a living u ~ Isabella Hammad

Samaritans quotes by Margaret Thatcher
I hate writing, I hate pens and paper and all that fussiness. I have done well enough without it too, I think. Oh, I am lying to myself. I have feared writing. But books have saved me sometimes, that is the truth - my Samaritans. ~ Sebastian Barry
Samaritans quotes by Sebastian Barry
Evangelism and the local church are inseparable. It's like the Good Samaritan seeking an inn for the one he rescued. ~ Reinhard Bonnke
Samaritans quotes by Reinhard Bonnke
What we need to make a more decent society is not a few Splendid Samaritans but millions of Minimally Decent Samaritans. ~ J. David Smith
Samaritans quotes by J. David Smith
Hell is paved with good samaritans. ~ William Holden
Samaritans quotes by William Holden
You forget that the world is full of ordinary decent people like yourselves, good Samaritans who'll stop and help a soul in need. ~ Gail Honeyman
Samaritans quotes by Gail Honeyman
The Gospels are full of testimonies of God's power from eyewitnesses who saw Jesus heal the sick and raise the dead. When the blind man received sight, he went and told others. Samaritans quotes by Eric Irivuzumugabe
In their quest to be inclusive and tolerant and up-to-date, the accommodationists imitated his scandalously comprehensive love, while ignoring his scandalously comprehensive judgments. They used his friendship with prostitutes as an excuse to ignore his explicit condemnations of fornication and divorce. They turned his disdain for the religious authorities of his day and his fondness for tax collectors and Roman soldiers into a thin excuse for privileging the secular realm over the sacred. While recognizing his willingness to dine with outcasts and converse with nonbelievers, they deemphasized the crucial fact that he had done so in order to heal them and convert them - ridding the leper of his sickness, telling the Samaritans that soon they would worship in spirit and truth, urging the woman taken in adultery to go, and from now on sin no more. ~ Ross Douthat
Samaritans quotes by Ross Douthat
The Samaritans denied the primacy of the Temple of Jerusalem as the sole place of worship. They instead worshiped God on Mount Gerizim. though this was essentially the only religious difference between the two peoples, it was enough for the Samaritans not to be considered Jews. ~ Reza Aslan
Samaritans quotes by Reza Aslan
Being missionaries means loving God with all one's heart, even to the point, if necessary, of dying for him ... Being missionaries means stooping down to the needs of all, like the Good Samaritan, especially those of the poorest and most destitute people. ~ Pope Benedict XVI
Samaritans quotes by Pope Benedict XVI
Back in the eighth century bc two kingdoms, Israel and Judah, occupied roughly the territory of modern Israel. The two kingdoms fought each other, but their inhabitants shared a religion and a common ancestry, because all of them belonged to one of twelve tribes descended from the twelve sons of Jacob. The kingdom of Israel was the older of the two and was originally the location of the religion's holy sites. When that kingdom was invaded by the Assyrians in the eighth century bc, though, tens of thousands of its inhabitants were carried off to northern Iraq. The kingdom of Judah was spared; its inhabitants came to be called Judeans, and then Jews. They, too, were taken into exile in Babylon, and came back with new ideas and changed traditions. As for the exiles from Israel, they were never heard of again, and came to be called the Ten Lost Tribes. But not all the ten tribes were truly lost, say the Samaritans. Some were deported by the Assyrians, yes, but others remained. ~ Gerard Russell
Samaritans quotes by Gerard Russell
I preach on specific sins because people are not convicted by sermons on sin in general. It was when our Lord said to the Samaritan woman, 'Go call thy husband ... ' (John 4:16), that she really faced up to her sinfulness. ~ Vance Havner
Samaritans quotes by Vance Havner
It is at times such as this that we show our true spirit of giving and of brotherhood - of revealing the good Samaritan in all of us. ~ Jo Bonner
Samaritans quotes by Jo Bonner
You will find people ready enough to do the Samaritan without the oil and twopence. ~ Sydney Smith
Samaritans quotes by Sydney Smith
The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But ... the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him? ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Samaritans quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr.
I can only hope that, upon learning of my imminent execution, Good Samaritans in Colorado will be moved to ship me a plump love apple from their backyard patch - and should they happen to be friendly with Hunter S. Thompson, perhaps persuade him to inject it with a little something beforehand. Hunter will know just what I mean, and trust me, it won't affect the taste of the tomato.*
*When I wrote those lines, Thompson was alive and blooming. Now, with his sad demise, still more color has faded out of the American scene. Where are the men today whose lives are not beige; where are the writers whose style is not gray? ~ Tom Robbins
Samaritans quotes by Tom Robbins
They saw the hurt man but didn't help him. Then a man from an area called Samaria came down the road. Most Jewish people and Samaritans were enemies. But that did not stop the Samaritan from helping the man. He took him to an inn and gave the innkeeper money. He asked the innkeeper to care for the man until he was better. If the innkeeper ran out of money, the Samaritan promised to bring him more. ~ Ellen Morgan
Samaritans quotes by Ellen Morgan
We are called to be strange in the same way that the early Christian communities were strange to the world around them. The community in Antioch brought together Jews and Samaritans, Greeks and Romans, slaves and free, men and women in a way that was so confusing that people didn't know what to call them. So they called them "Christians." The only way they knew to describe their peculiar actions was to say that they were followers of an odd preacher from Galilee.

The world is longing for such new and odd communities in our time. . . . I pray the time is now and that the resurrection might begin in us. ~ Emmanuel M. Katongole
