These were such friendly people, they didn't notice how crabby we were, and before you knew it everyone was as happy as they were. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Will read a poem by Sir Walter Raleigh at his grandmother's funeral.

"Pondering the joys we had, listen & keep very still. If the lowing from the hill or the tolling of the bell do not
serve to break the spell, listen: you may be allowed to hear my laughter from a cloud. ~ Lynne Branard
Raleigh quotes by Lynne Branard
The flowers do fade, and wanton fields To wayward winter reckoning yields; A honey tongue, a heart of gall, Is fancy's spring, but sorrow's fall. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
When two people are destined in heaven to be together, they are complete, and the repairing of the world can begin ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
What was costly was not the shot but coming back without good pictures to choose from. The light was perfect, orange gray, casting long shadows. The city seemed to reveal more the darker it got. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Why do people want everyone to act just like they do? Talk like they do. Look like they do. Act like they do.
And if you don't
If you don't, people make the assumption that you do not FEEL what they feel.
And then they make the assumption
That you must not feel anything at all. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Romance goes like this: Boy gets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy gets girl again. The end. It can't be any other way. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
All we are, all we can be, are the stories we tell," he says, and he is talking as if he is talking only to me. "Long after we are gone, our words will be all that is left, and who is to say what really happened or even what reality is? Our stories, our fiction, our words will be as close to truth as can be. And no one can take that away from you. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
If thy friends be of better quality than thyself, thou mayest be sure of two things; first, they will be more careful to keep thy counsel, because they have more to lose than thou hast; the second, they will esteem thee for thyself, and not for that which thou dost possess. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Even such is Time *
Even such is Time, that takes in trust
Our youth, our joys, our all we have,
And pays us but with earth and dust;
Who in the dark and silent grave,
When we have wandered all our ways,
Shuts up the story of our days:
But from this earth, this grave, this dust,
My God shall raise me up, I trust.
Sir Walter Raleigh (1554-1618)
*These lines are said to have been composed by Sir Walter Raleigh on the night before his execution. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
The Engine Is The Heart Of An Airplane But The Pilot Is Its Soul. ~ Walter Alexander Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Alexander Raleigh
Tell me why the stars do shine,
Tell me why the ivy twines,
Tell me what makes skies so blue,
And I'll tell you why I love you.
Nuclear fusion makes stars to shine,
Tropisms make the ivy twine,
Raleigh scattering make skies so blue,
Testicular hormones are why I love you. ~ Isaac Asimov
Raleigh quotes by Isaac Asimov
I became involved in a residential school for the blind in Raleigh - the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh. ~ Ronnie Milsap
Raleigh quotes by Ronnie Milsap
Thou may be sure that he who will tell thee of thy faults is thy friend, for he ventures thy dislike and doth hazard thy hatred. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
All men are evil and will declare themselves to be so when occasion is offered. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
There is no error which hath not some appearance of probability resembling truth, which, when men who study to be singular find out, straining reason, they then publish to the world matter of contention and jangling. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Courage is contagious: When one person of courage stands up, others are affected and stand up with him ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Prevention is the daughter of intelligence. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
God is absolutely good; and so, assuredly, the cause of all that is good. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
When you fall in love with a work of art, you'd die to meet the artist. I am a student of the galleries of Pacific sunsets, full moon rises on the ocean, the clouds from an airplane, autumn forests in Raleigh, first fallen snows.
And I'm dying to meet the artist. ~ Yasmin Mogahed
Raleigh quotes by Yasmin Mogahed
There never was a man of solid understanding, whose apprehensions are sober, and by a pensive inspection advised, but that he hath found by an irresistible necessity one true God and everlasting being. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
I can't write a book commensurate with Shakespeare, but I can write a book by me. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Youth is the opportunity to do something and to be somebody. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
I have provided a possible explanation for Antiochus's insane foolhardiness when left in command of the Athenian Fleet, because Thucidides's bald account is so unbelievable (unless one assumes that both Antiochus and Alkibiades were mentally defective) that any explanation seems more likely than none.
Alkibiades himself is an enigma. Even allowing that no man is all black and all white, few men can ever have been more wildly and magnificently piebald. Like another strange and contradictory character Sir Walter Raleigh, he casts a glamour that comes clean down the centuries, a dazzle of personal magnetism that makes it hard to see the man behind it. I have tried to see. I have tried to fit the pieces into a coherent whole; I don't know whether I have been successful or not; but I do not think that I have anywhere falsified the portrait. ~ Rosemary Sutcliff
Raleigh quotes by Rosemary Sutcliff
I am aware that those hateful persons called Original Researchers now maintain that Raleigh was not the man; but to them I turn a deaf ear. ~ James M. Barrie
Raleigh quotes by James M. Barrie
It would be an unspeakable advantage, both to the public and private, if men would consider that great truth, that no man is wise or safe but he that is honest. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Would Shakespeare and Raleigh have done their best, would that galaxy have shone so bright in the heavens had there been no Elizabeth on the throne? ~ Amos Bronson Alcott
Raleigh quotes by Amos Bronson Alcott
It's not about what makes you feel better or worse. If it's the right thing to do and you know it, you should do it. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
What dependence can I have on the alleged events of ancient history, when I find such difficulty in ascertaining the truth regarding a matter that has taken place only a few minutes ago, and almost in my own presence! ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Romance is a love affair in other than domestic surroundings. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Talking much is a sign of vanity, for the one who is lavish with words is cheap in deeds. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
I am reminded by my journey how exceedingly new this country still is. You have only to travel for a few days into the interior and back parts even of many of the old States, to come to that very America which the Northmen, and Cabot, and Gosnold, and Smith, and Raleigh visited. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Raleigh quotes by Henry David Thoreau
When I write, I can be heard. And known. But nobody has to look at me. Nobody has to see me at all. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
False love, desire, and beauty frail, adieu!
Dead is the root whence all these fancies grew. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
This is a sharp medicine, but it is a physician for all diseases and miseries. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
The best time for marriage will be towards thirty, for as the younger times are unfit, either to choose or to govern a wife and family, so, if thou stay long, thou shalt hardly see the education of thy children, who, being left to strangers, are in effect lost; and better were it to be unborn than ill-bred; for thereby thy posterity shall either perish, or remain a shame to thy name. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
But true love is a durable fire, In the mind ever burning, Never sick, never old, never dead, From itself never turning. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
We're not unique in our family. We're more ambitious but we're not special. I'm not funnier than anyone else in my family; it's just that we wanted more than Raleigh, North Carolina, had to offer. If my brother wanted more than Raleigh had to offer, you would know his name. My sister Lisa has a really unique and different voice, but she doesn't want that. She's a fine writer, but never said, "I want a book. I want that kind of attention." ~ David Sedaris
Raleigh quotes by David Sedaris
No one can take less pains than to hold his tongue. Hear much, and speak little; for the tongue is the instrument of the greatest good and greatest evil that is done in the world. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
It is the nature of men having escaped one extreme, which by force they were constrained long to endure, to run headlong into the other extreme, forgetting that virtue doth always consist in the mean. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
PASSIONS are likened best to floods and streams:
The shallow murmur, but the deep are dumb; ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
No mortal thing can bear so high a price, But that with mortal thing it may be bought. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Even such is Time, which takes in trust
Our youth, our joys, and all we have,
And pays us but with age and dust;
Who in the dark and silent grave,
When we have wandered all our ways,
Shuts up the story of our days. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
My past might be the scattered shrapnel of a detonated grenade, but Raleigh is the truth of my Now. ~ Suzanne Van Rooyen
Raleigh quotes by Suzanne Van Rooyen
The engine is the heart of an aeroplane, but the pilot is its soul. ~ Walter Alexander Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Alexander Raleigh
I shall never be persuaded that God hath shut up all light of learning within the lantern of Aristotle's brain. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Remember, that if thou marry for beauty, thou bindest thyself all thy life for that which perchance will neither last nor please thee one year; and when thou hast it, it will be to thee of no price at all; for the desire dieth when it is attained, and the affection perisheth when it is satisfied. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
He that doth not as other men do, but endeavoureth that which ought to be done, shall thereby rather incur peril than preservation; for whoso laboureth to be sincerely perfect and good shall necessarily perish, living among men that are generally evil. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
I was terrified of him but at the same time wanted him to desire me. I wanted him to care for me and protect me. ~ Lydia Kelly
Raleigh quotes by Lydia Kelly
Sometimes there is nothing to hold me together. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
There are many, many different worlds to live in. And sometimes there is no connection from one to another. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Better were it to be unborn than to be ill bred. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
The Wood is that that makes the gallows tree;
The Weed is that that strings the hangman's bag;
The Wag, my pretty knave, betokens thee. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
It is plain there is not in nature a point of stability to be found; everything either ascends or declines; when wars are ended abroad, sedition begins at home; and when men are freed from fighting for necessity, they quarrel through ambition. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Use your youth so that you may have comfort to remember it when it has forsaken you, and not sigh and grieve at the account thereof. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
There were a number of early water-powered mills around Green Hill. Duncan Smith, Berry McDonald, Thomas Ross, Isham Richardson, and Enoch Raleigh Kennedy had gristmills on Cow Pen Creek. ~ William Lindsey McDonald
Raleigh quotes by William Lindsey McDonald
Our bodies are but the anvils of pain and disease and our minds the hives of unnumbered cares. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Trust few men; above all, keep your follies to yourself. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Know how to live with the time that is given you. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
So the heart be right, it is no matter which way the head lieth. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
So the heart be right, it is not matter which way the head lies ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
I wrapped my arms around him, threading my fingers through his hair, wanting to be as close as humanly possible to this person I loved so much. ~ Raleigh Ruebins
Raleigh quotes by Raleigh Ruebins
Our souls, piercing through the impurity of flesh, behold the highest heaven, and thence bring knowledge to contemplate the ever-during, glory and termless joy. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Give my scallop-shell of quiet, My staff of faith to walk upon, My scrip of joy, immortal diet, My bottle of salvation, My gown of glory, hope's true gage; And thus I'll take my pilgrimage. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Expressive glances Shall be our lances And pops of Sillery Our light artillery. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
She is the rock 'n' roll queen. Weirdly enough, that is one of the things her reign will be remembered for. Queen Elizabeth I, we remember Raleigh; Queen Elizabeth II it's gonna be the Beatles. ~ Paul McCartney
Raleigh quotes by Paul McCartney
I am a former Kleagle [recruiter] of the Ku Klux Klan in Raleigh County. The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia. It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the union. ~ Robert Byrd
Raleigh quotes by Robert Byrd
I've been out on the book tour going through Pittsburgh, St Louis and Cleveland, Dayton and Orlando, Raleigh-Durham. I sign many books for people. ~ Jamie Farr
Raleigh quotes by Jamie Farr
In subsequent years the groups you named had important roles in educating people about the real issues in Washington and Raleigh, and within the Democratic Party. ~ Jesse Helms
Raleigh quotes by Jesse Helms
It's better for you if we're not seen together anyway."
"What makes you think that?"
"…I'm the pariah of Raleigh High. Sitting anywhere with me is the quickest, most efficient way to commit social suicide. I am broken, Alex."
… "It's okay to be broken. You have every right to be. Just don't let them keep on breaking you. That's not how you win this particular game."
I wrench my hand free. "This isn't a fucking game."
Looking around the parking lot, as if seeing his surroundings for the very first time. "Of course it is," he says. "This is high school, Silver. This is the biggest game there is. ~ Callie Hart
Raleigh quotes by Callie Hart
With a hand on the back of his neck, Raleigh pulled him down until their foreheads touched. "I love you. I want to suffocate you in your sleep with your pillow sometimes, but I love you."
Steven chuckled and nipped Raleigh's full bottom lip. "I love you too, Cony." Running his fingers through the back of the thick black hair, Steven urged Raleigh forward. "Please don't murder me in my sleep." Their lips met. ~ J.L. Langley
Raleigh quotes by J.L. Langley
The most adventurous I've been was doing Raleigh International when I was 20. ~ Rupert Evans
Raleigh quotes by Rupert Evans
Historians desiring to write the actions of men, ought to set down the simple truth, and not say anything for love or hatred; also to choose such an opportunity for writing as it may be lawful to think what they will, and write what they think, which is a rare happiness of the time. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Swaggering in the coffee-houses and ruffling it in the streets were the men who had sailed with Frobisher and Drake and Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Hawkins, and Sir Richard Granville; had perhaps witnessed the heroic death of Sir Philip Sidney, at Zutphen; had served with Raleigh in Anjou, Picardy, Languedoc, in the Netherlands, in the Irish civil war; had taken part in the dispersion of the Spanish Armada, and in the bombardment of Cadiz; had filled their cups to the union of Scotland with England; had suffered shipwreck on the Barbary Coast, or had, by the fortune of war, felt the grip of the Spanish Inquisition; who could tell tales of the marvels seen in new-found America and the Indies, and, perhaps, like Captain John Smith, could mingle stories of the naive simplicity of the natives beyond the Atlantic, with charming narratives of the wars in Hungary, the beauties of the seraglio of the Grand Turk, and the barbaric pomp of the Khan of Tartary. ~ William Shakespeare
Raleigh quotes by William Shakespeare
There was a pretty fair bike shop in McLean, and Bernstein drove there to kill a couple of hours and look halfheartedly for a replacement for his beloved Raleigh. But his mind was on Jeb Magruder. He had picked up a profoundly disturbing piece of information that day: Magruder was a bike freak. Bernstein had trouble swallowing the information that a bicycle nut could be a Watergate bugger. ~ Carl Bernstein
Raleigh quotes by Carl Bernstein
We have nothing less to do than to get inside of whole peoples and change their motives and dispositions. ~ John Raleigh Mott
Raleigh quotes by John Raleigh Mott
Potatoes came to Europe from the New World in the early sixteenth century. Sir Francis Drake is thought to have introduced the potato to England, and shortly afterward Sir Walter Raleigh tried planting them on his Irish estates. When ~ Ryan Hackney
Raleigh quotes by Ryan Hackney
Unlike my father and millions of Chinese, everyone in America - every man, woman and child, whether rich or poor - has the freedom to choose, freedom to shape his or her own destiny. Don't you agree that you can better manage your own life than other people can? ~ Helen Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Helen Raleigh
Be advised what thou dost discourse of, and what thou maintainest whether touching religion, state, or vanity; for if thou err in the first, thou shalt be accounted profane; if in the second, dangerous; if in the third, indiscreet and foolish. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Men endure the losses that befall them by mere casualty with more patience than the damages they sustain by injustice. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Love likes not the falling fruit,
Nor the withered tree. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh once remarked, "the art of magic is the art of worshipping God. ~ Jason Louv
Raleigh quotes by Jason Louv
There is nothing more becoming any wise man, than to make choice of friends, for by them thou shalt be judged what thou art: let them therefore be wise and virtuous, and none of those that follow thee for gain; but make election rather of thy betters, than thy inferiors. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
I dare not think that any supercelestial heaven, or whatsoever else ... was increate and eternal. And as for the place of God before the world created, the finite wisdom of mortal men hath no perception of it; neither can it limit the seat of infinite power, no more than infinite power itself can be limited; for his place is in himself, whom no magnitude else can contain. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
There is an irresistible demand to strengthen the leadership of the constructive forces of the world at the present momentous time. This is true because of stupendous, almost unbelievable changes which have taken place in recent years on every continent. ~ John Raleigh Mott
Raleigh quotes by John Raleigh Mott
There is nothing exempt from the peril of mutation; the earth, heavens, and whole world is thereunto subject. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Old elbows," she told me. "A woman's elbows always give her age away. ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
But from this earth, this grave, this dust, My God shall raise me up, I trust. ~ Walter Raleigh

SHAKESPEARE

What is a man,
If his chief good and market of his time
Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more

(Hamlet)

There is no one kind of Shakespearean hero, although in many ways Hamlet is the epitome of the Renaissance tragic hero, who reaches his perfection only to die. In Shakespeare's early plays, his heroes are mainly historical figures, kings of England, as he traces some of the historical background to the nation's glory. But character and motive are more vital to his work than praise for the dynasty, and Shakespeare's range expands considerably during the 1590s, as he and his company became the stars of London theatre. Although he never went to university, as Marlowe and Kyd had done, Shakespeare had a wider range of reference and allusion, theme and content than any of his contemporaries. His plays, written for performance rather than publication, were not only highly successful as entertainment, they were also at the cutting edge of the debate on a great many of the moral and philosophical issues of the time.

Shakespeare's earliest concern was with kingship and history, with how 'this sceptr'd isle' came to its present glory. As his career progressed, the horizons of the world widened, and his explorations encompassed the geography of the human soul, just as the voyages of such travellers as Richard Hakluyt, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake expanded the horizons of the real world. ~ Ronald Carter
Raleigh quotes by Ronald Carter
Such highly qualitative leadership is demanded especially in the realm of the fostering of right international relations. Here the demand is simply irresistible. ~ John Raleigh Mott
Raleigh quotes by John Raleigh Mott
What is our life? A play of passion.
Our mirth the music of division.
Our mother's wombs the tyring houses be,
Where we are drest for this short Comedy.
Heaven the judicious sharp spectator is,
That sits and marks still who doth act amiss,
Our graves that hide us from the searching sun,
Are like drawn curtains when the play is done.
Thus march we playing to our latest rest,
Only we die in earnest, that's no jest. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Let your eyes be the camera and your imagination be the set. ~ Raleigh Daniels
Raleigh quotes by Raleigh Daniels
Less pains in the world a man cannot take than to bold his tongue. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
The longer it possesseth a man the more he will delight in it, and the older he groweth the more he shall be subject to it; for it dulleth the spirits, and destroyeth the body as ivy doth the old tree, or as the worm that engendereth in the kernal of the nut. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
Anderson forces a laugh. "Of course." He smiles, but inside he is seething. He'll have to deal with Raleigh. And now perhaps Carlyle as well. He's been sloppy. He eyes the ngaw with disgust. He's been waving his latest interest in front of everyone. Grahamites, even, and now this. It's too easy to get comfortable. To forget all the lines of exposure. And then one day in a bar, someone slaps you in the face. ~ Paolo Bacigalupi
Raleigh quotes by Paolo Bacigalupi
We have, then, three Books wholly and one partially written before, and two after, the Preface; and only one of the first four is consistent with it, while the two later are entirely in agreement with it. In the first group, the adventure which fits into the scheme in the Letter is the first of all, which is a significant fact. If Spenser were somewhat hastily reconstructing his scheme he would naturally test its coherence with what he had already written in the first Book and perhaps re-write certain passages. He may have forgotten the details of Books II and III or Raleigh's urgency may have left no time for the adjustment of the details.

These discrepancies are all connected with the twelve days' Feast and Gloriana's appointment of the knights, and this part may well have been suggested by Raleigh. He probably intended the poem not only to make Spenser's fortune at court but also to reinstate himself in the Queen's favour. In the circumstances he would wish to make the reference to the Queen as clear and as flattering as possible. ~ Janet Spens
Raleigh quotes by Janet Spens
Whoever commands the sea, commands the trade; whosoever commands the trade of the world commands the riches of the world, and consequently the world itself. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
He says, "But, hey, wouldn't it be weird-if Bennu wakes up from the operation, and he's all tall and stuff, and then he doesn't recognize himself in the mirror? ~ Nora Raleigh Baskin
Raleigh quotes by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Whoso desireth to govern well and securely, it behoveth him to have a vigilant eye to the proceedings of great princes, and to consider seriously of their designs. ~ Walter Raleigh
Raleigh quotes by Walter Raleigh
If all the world and love were young,
And truth in every shepherd's tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move
To live with thee, and be thy love. ~ Walter Raleigh
