The notion of the large, massive public university that can exist in isolated splendor is dead. ~ Gordon Gee
Public University quotes by Gordon Gee
Being president of a major public university is the most political nonpolitical office around. ~ Gordon Gee
Public University quotes by Gordon Gee
But September 11 marked a big change in the sense that the public was suddenly interested, and as a professor at a public university I felt a responsibility to respond to all of the inquiries about the Islamic world. ~ Juan Cole
Public University quotes by Juan Cole
I am grateful for the great education at a public university that Germany gave me, and that - added to a little luck - allowed me to achieve. Education is the key to a career, and its basis has to be provided by government. ~ Hasso Plattner
Public University quotes by Hasso Plattner
But the Wisconsin tradition meant more than a simple belief in the people. It also meant a faith in the application of intelligence and reason to the problems of society. It meant a deep conviction that the role of government was not to stumble along like a drunkard in the dark, but to light its way by the best torches of knowledge and understanding it could find. ~ Adlai Stevenson
Public University quotes by Adlai Stevenson
Still, we've gone soft since those days of wartime sacrifice, haven't we? Contemporary humans are too self-centered, too addicted to gratification to live without the full freedom to satisfy our every whim - or so our culture tells us every day. And yet the truth is that we continue to make collective sacrifices in the name of an abstract greater good all the time. We sacrifice our pensions, our hard-won labor rights, our arts and after-school programs. We send our kids to learn in ever more crowded classrooms, led by ever more harried teachers. We accept that we have to pay dramatically more for the destructive energy sources that power our transportation and our lives. We accept that bus and subway fares go up and up while service fails to improve or degenerates. We accept that a public university education should result in a debt that will take half a lifetime to pay off when such a thing was unheard of a generation ago. ~ Naomi Klein
Public University quotes by Naomi Klein
Brands, musicians, and public figures were among the first to embrace video on 'Instagram', and we've been impressed with how brands have extended their reach with video ads. ~ Kevin Systrom
Public University quotes by Kevin Systrom
I went to the University of Virginia and I came from, I grew up in suburban Philadelphia. ~ Tina Fey
Public University quotes by Tina Fey
The reason sport is attractive to many of the general public is that it's filled with reversals. What you think may happen doesn't happen. A champion is beaten, an unknown becomes a champion. ~ Roger Bannister
Public University quotes by Roger Bannister
It is of the greatest consequence that the debt should ... be remoulded into such a shape as will bring the expenditure of the nation to a level with its income. Till this shall be accomplished, the finances of the United States will never wear proper countenance. Arrears of interest, continually accruing, will be as continual a monument, either of inability, or of ill faith and will not cease to have an evil influence on public credit. ~ Alexander Hamilton
Public University quotes by Alexander Hamilton
My deepest regret from my years in public service is the failure of the United States and the international community to act sooner to halt these crimes. ~ Madeleine Albright
Public University quotes by Madeleine Albright
It is ... necessary to whip up the population in support of foreign adventures. Usually the population is pacifist, just like they were during the First World War. The public sees no reason to get involved in foreign adventures, killing, and torture. So you have to whip them up. And to whip them up you have to frighten them. ~ Noam Chomsky
Public University quotes by Noam Chomsky
take an edible piece of nature and create a promise out of it, communicate that promise to the public, and then deliver on it with taste. ~ David Sax
Public University quotes by David Sax
As for the young man carrying the groceries, he was a thin, fair-skinned young man, and I would have said that he had been born in the house. He had the vacant, dog-like expressions that house-born slaves, as I remembered, liked to put on when they were in public with their masters and performing some simple task. This fellow was pretending that the Waitrose groceries were a great burden, but this was just an act, to draw attention to himself and the lady he served. He, too, had mistaken me for an Arab, and when we crossed he had dropped the burdened-down expression and given me a look of wistful inquisitiveness, like a puppy that wanted to play but had just been made to understand that it wasn't playtime. ~ V.S. Naipaul
Public University quotes by V.S. Naipaul
No republic has long outlived the discovery by a majority of its people that they could vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. ~ Alexander Fraser Tytler
Public University quotes by Alexander Fraser Tytler
I believed that, if I put a chocolate on the market that was better than anyone else was making, or was likely to make, and keep it absolutely uniform in quality, the time would come when the public would appreciate it and buy it. ~ Milton S. Hershey
Public University quotes by Milton S. Hershey
Chamfort, echoing the misanthropic attitude of generations of philosophers before and after him, put the matter simply: 'Public opinion is the worst of all opinions. ~ Alain De Botton
Public University quotes by Alain De Botton
We can only love what we know. ~ Anna Letitia Barbauld
Public University quotes by Anna Letitia Barbauld
Everything a teenager does, says or looks at, however transitory, contributes to an aggregated virtual self that might one day have consequences for its real-life counterpart. How many of us would keep all our relationships and reputations intact if every transgression, mistake or youthful folly was held in public view? ~ Beeban Kidron
Public University quotes by Beeban Kidron
Most people have seen worse things in private than they pretend to be shocked at in public. ~ E.W. Howe
Public University quotes by E.W. Howe
Learning turns the wheels of enlightenment. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Public University quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
Art is the word we give to our feelings made public. ~ Pleasefindthis
Public University quotes by Pleasefindthis
Even what are considered the accomplishments of diversity are admissions of its failure. All across America, public organizations such as fire departments and police forces congratulate themselves when they manage to hire more than a token number of blacks or Hispanics. They promise that this will greatly improve service.
And yet, is this not an admission of how difficult the multi-racial enterprise really is? If all across America it has been shown that whites cannot provide effective police protection for blacks or Hispanics, it only proves that diversity is an insoluble problem. If blacks want black officers and Hispanics want Hispanic officers, they are certainly not expressing support for diversity. A mixed-race force - touted as an example of the benefits of diversity - becomes necessary only because of the tensions that arise between officers of one race and citizens of another. The diversity we celebrate is necessary only because of the intractable problems of diversity.
Likewise, if Hispanic judges and prosecutors must be recruited for the justice system, does this mean whites cannot dispense dispassionate justice? If non-white teachers are necessary role models for non-white children, does this mean inspiration cannot cross racial lines? If newspapers must hire non-white reporters in order to satisfy non-white readers, does this mean whites cannot write acceptable news for non-whites? If blacks demand black newscasters and weathermen on television, does it ~ Jared Taylor
Public University quotes by Jared Taylor
I believe Moses was 80 when God first commissioned him for public service. ~ Ronald Reagan
Public University quotes by Ronald Reagan
Tenured professors are more prone than the rest of us to think that the university is the universe. ~ Pankaj Mishra
Public University quotes by Pankaj Mishra
Do not first announce action, and then, when you are unable to take action, withdraw, because you will only find yourself in the same position as now, plus a public and humiliating confession of impotence. ~ Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl Of Rosebery
Public University quotes by Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl Of Rosebery
I've always been DJing; it's just I'm making more of a push for it, making it more public. ~ Idris Elba
Public University quotes by Idris Elba
The door available to everyone that can lead to happiness & success is the modest door of the public library. I found it to be so in my own life and work. ~ Herman Wouk
Public University quotes by Herman Wouk
Science is not about what's true. It's about what people with originally diverse viewpoints can be forced to believe by way of public evidence. ~ Lee Smolin
Public University quotes by Lee Smolin
While the romanticized ideal of universal public education resonates with the cognoscenti who oppose vouchers, poor urban families just want the best education for their children, who will certainly need it to function in our high-tech and advanced society. ~ Clarence Thomas
Public University quotes by Clarence Thomas
This is my philosophy: I prefer to stay out of the public eye. I love freedom. ~ Bidzina Ivanishvili
Public University quotes by Bidzina Ivanishvili
Every day I saw others like me in this city - enough of us to populate our own town. But we only acknowledged each other with a furtive glance, fearful of calling attention to ourselves. Being alone in public was painful enough; two could find themselves smack in the center of an unbearable sideshow. We didn't seem to have any of our own places to gather in community, to immerse ourselves in our own ways and our own languages. ~ Leslie Feinberg
Public University quotes by Leslie Feinberg
Who is to blame? The filth peddler, of course, but even more than this vulgar entertainer, the filth consumer, the public. So long as men are corrupt and revel in sewer filth, entertainers will sell them what they want. Laws may be passed, arrests may be made, lawyers may argue, courts may sentence and jails may harbor men of corrupt minds, but pornography and allied insults to decency will never cease until men have cleansed their minds and cease to require and pay for such vile stuff. When the customer is sick and tired of being drowned in filth by the comedians, he will not pay for that filth and its source will dry up. ~ Spencer W. Kimball
Public University quotes by Spencer W. Kimball
In France, where Franklin had lived from 1776 to 1785, he had won an extraordinary place in the public mind. The French had lionized him to the point of absurdity - or so at least his colleagues in the American mission thought. ~ Edmund Morgan
Public University quotes by Edmund Morgan
I clearly had a few daddy issues myself, but you didn't see me pulling the wings off of flies. On the other hand, I did have a slight anger-management problem, and a related history of physical violence, both well documented by the public school system. And, oh yeah, that whole "hallucinating alien spacecraft from my favorite videogame" thing. So perhaps I wasn't in the best position to judge the sanity of others. ~ Ernest Cline
Public University quotes by Ernest Cline
I am prepared to admit that when it comes to dealing with the House and Senate leaders, Obama is terrible. But he's great with the public. Which hates the House and Senate as much as he does. ~ Gail Collins
Public University quotes by Gail Collins
Government, in the last analysis, is organized opinion. Where there is little or no public opinion, there is likely to be bad government. ~ Mackenzie King
Public University quotes by Mackenzie King
Knowledge is a public good and increases in value as the number of people possessing it increases. ~ John Wilbanks
Public University quotes by John Wilbanks
The IPCC summary for policymakers is used to scare politicians and goad the public into action. The UN is all about politics. ~ Marc Morano
Public University quotes by Marc Morano
I didn't grow up in public life. I lived with my mother in Boston, not in Washington, DC, so I was somewhat sheltered from that. ~ Alexandra Kerry
Public University quotes by Alexandra Kerry
You cannot easily fit women into a structure that is already coded as male; you have to change the structure. That means thinking about power differently. It means decoupling it from public prestige. It means thinking collaboratively, about the power of followers not just of leaders. It means, above all, thinking about power as an attribute or even a verb ('to power'), not as a possession. ~ Mary Beard
Public University quotes by Mary Beard
A study done at the University of London found that constant emailing and text-messaging reduces mental capability by an average of ten points on an IQ test. It was five points for women, and fifteen points for men. This effect is similar to missing a night's sleep. For men, it's around three times more than the effect of smoking cannabis. ~ David Rock
Public University quotes by David Rock
What you do in private is of greater importance than what you do in public. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Public University quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
In 1951, the Columbia University sociologist C. Wright Mills published a study titled White Collar: The American Middle Classes.26 Like Ronald Coase, Mills was fascinated by the rise of large managerial corporations. He argued that these firms, in their pursuit of scale and efficiency, had created a vast tier of workers who carried out repetitive, mechanistic tasks that stifled their imagination and, ultimately, their ability to fully participate in society. In short, Mills argued, the typical corporate worker was alienated. For many, that alienation was captured in the warning printed on the Hollerith punch cards that, thanks to IBM and other data processing firms, became ubiquitous symbols and agents of bureaucratized life during the 1950s and 1960s: "Do Not Fold, Spindle, or Mutilate. ~ Moises Naim
Public University quotes by Moises Naim
The busy 20th and 21st centuries have made Garfield's era seem remote and irrelevant, its leaders ridiculed for their very obscurity... to the generation of Americans then alive, though, their dramas, humanities, and dignity were a compelling part of daily life. For twenty years after the Civil War, America was led by a group of larger-than-life figures with clay feet who fought and raged and plied their craft with nerve and ambition while following a code of honor riddled with blind spots and inconsistencies; during that time, public involvement in politics reached levels far higher than today. Garfield held a special place: one of the most promising of his generation, shot down in his prime, martyred for taking a principled stand. ~ Kenneth D. Ackerman
Public University quotes by Kenneth D. Ackerman
The First Lady is an unpaid public servant elected by one person - her husband. ~ Lady Bird Johnson
Public University quotes by Lady Bird Johnson
Singing in Yiddish was a great thrill for me and came about through Joe Papp, the founder of The Public Theater. ~ Mandy Patinkin
Public University quotes by Mandy Patinkin
The public are a lot of jackasses. If you yell and scream and throw yourself about you'll always get a lot of damned fools to shout themselves silly. Just barnstorming, that's what you've been doing the last four nights. It was false from beginning to end."
"False? But I felt every word of it."
"I don't care what you felt, you weren't acting it. Your performance was a mess. You were exaggerating; you were over-acting; you didn't carry conviction for a moment. It was about as rotten a piece of ham acting as I've ever seen in my life. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
Public University quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Believe it or not, I supported Richard Nixon on the issue of presidential privilege. How could anyone conceive of being the president of the United States and think that every single thing that you say or do can become a part of the public record? It just seems so stupid to me. ~ Jack Nicholson
Public University quotes by Jack Nicholson
I didn't write about aspects of my public life because that's a small part of my life. ~ Patti Smith
Public University quotes by Patti Smith
Jane: "Look, Dave Chandler left me on the ninth floor of our university research library without my panties after we lost our virginity together. He never called me again and actually turned on his heel and walked in the opposite direction whenever he saw me on campus. Unless you're going to do that, I don't think were gonna have a problem. Gabriel?"
Gabriel: "Sorry. Something strange happened inside my head when you said the word "panties". The overwhelming urge to kill Dave Chandler combined with a simultaneous loss of blood to the brain. ~ Molly Harper
Public University quotes by Molly Harper
Public behavior is merely private character writ large. ~ Stephen Covey
Public University quotes by Stephen Covey
Now they have come to the place where their faith can no longer feed on the bread of repression and violence. They ask for the bread of liberty, of public equality, and public responsibility. It must not be denied them. ~ Mordecai Wyatt Johnson
Public University quotes by Mordecai Wyatt Johnson
