In the past, my brain could only compute perfection or failure - nothing in between. So words like competent, acceptable, satisfactory, and good enough fell into the failure category. Even above average meant failure if I received an 88 out of 100 percent on an exam, I felt that I failed. The fact is most things in life are not absolutes and have components of both good and bad. I used to think in absolute terms a lot: all, every, or never. I would all of the food (that is, binge), and then I would restrict every meal and to never eat again. This type of thinking extended outside of the food arena as well: I had to get all of the answers right on a test; I had to be in every extracurricular activity […] The 'if it's not perfect, I quit' approach to life is a treacherous way to live. […] I hadn't established a baseline of competence: What gets the job done? What is good enough? Finding good enough takes trial and error. For those of us who are perfectionists, the error part of trial and error can stop us dead in our tracks. We would rather keep chasing perfection than risk possibly making a mistake. I was able to change my behavior only when the pain of perfectionism became greater than the pain of making an error. […] Today good enough means that I'm okay just the way I am. I play my position in the world. I catch the ball when it is thrown my way. I don't always have to make the crowd go wild or get a standing ovation. It's good enough to just catch the ball or even to do my ~ Jenni Schaefer
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Jenni Schaefer
I picture the vast realm of the sciences as an immense landscape scattered with patches of dark and light. The goal towards which we must work is either to extend the boundaries of the patches of light, or to increase their number. One of these tasks falls to the creative genius; the other requires a sort of sagacity combined with perfectionism. ~ Denis Diderot
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Denis Diderot
We freeze up because we expect a certain result or because we want things to be perfect. ~ Bernie Glassman
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Bernie Glassman
Should government refrain from regulation (taxation), the worthlessness of the money becomes apparent and the fraud can no longer be concealed. ~ John Maynard Keynes
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by John Maynard Keynes
Perfectionism has nothing to do with getting it right. It has nothing to do with fixing things. It has nothing to do with standards. Perfectionism is a refusal to let yourself move forward. It is a loop-an obsessive, debilitating closed system that causes you to get stuck in the details of what you are writing or painting or making and to lose sight of the whole. ~ Julia Cameron
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Julia Cameron
Even though we get a lot of people into the shop, only a small percentage of them buy anything. The best customers are the ones who just have to buy a record on a Saturday, even if there's nothing they really want; unless they go home clutching a flat, square carrier bag they feel uncomfortable. You can spot the vinyl addicts because after a while they get fed up with the rack they are flicking through, march over to a completely different section of the shop, pull a sleeve out from the middle somewhere, and come over to the counter; this is because they have been making a list of possible purchases in their head ('If I don't find anything in the next five minutes, that blues compilation I saw half an hour ago will have to do'), and suddenly sicken themselves with the amount of time they have wasted looking for something that they don't really want. I know that feeling well (these are my people, and I understand them better than I understand anybody in the world): it is a prickly, clammy, panicky sensation, and you go out of the shop reeling. You walk much more quickly afterwards, trying to recapture the part of the day that has escaped, and quite often you have the urge to read the international section of a newspaper, or go to see a Peter Greenaway film, to consume something solid and meaty which will lie on top of the candyfloss worthlessness clogging up your head. ~ Nick Hornby
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Nick Hornby
Ash is submissiveness, worthlessness, irrelevance itself, and best of all, it is itself pervaded by the belief that it is fit for nothing. Is it possible to be more helpless, more impotent, and more wretched than ash? Not very easily. Could anything be more compliant and more tolerant? Hardly. Ash has no notion of character and is further from any kind of wood than dejection is from exhilaration. Where there is ash there is actually nothing at all. Tread on ash, and you will barely notice that you have stepped on anything. ~ Robert Walser
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Robert Walser
After watching what this purchase had cost Irwin and Linda, Amy and I chose a different path. Love, we figured, may be the best thing that ever happens between two people. And that the best thing is of no worldly worth struck us a beautiful paradox
and an endangered one. We therefore began fighting to defend the worthlessness of lovers everywhere in the only way we knew how: by vowing to remain as inseparable from each other, and as utterly useless to all opportunists, as the rest of our responsibilities would allow. ~ David James Duncan
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by David James Duncan
What if you wake up some day, and you're 65 ... and you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life? ~ Anne Lamott
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Anne Lamott
I especially love watching Marcus Aurelius fighting his perfectionism in order to get back to work on his writing, regardless of the results. "Get a move on," he writes to himself, "and don't worry whether anyone will give you credit for it. And don't go expecting Plato's 'Republic;' be satisfied with even the smallest progress, and treat the outcome of it all as unimportant." Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds it endearing and encouraging that a legendary Roman philosopher had to reassure himself that it's okay not to be Plato. Really, Marcus, it's okay! Just keep working. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
Perfectionism is the belief that something is broken - you. So you dress up your brokenness with degrees, achievements, accolades, pieces of paper, none of which can fix what you think you are fixing. ~ Edith Eger
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Edith Eger
Tilly was downcast; as with all perfectionists, it was the detail others might not notice that destroyed for her the pleasure of achievement. ~ Elspeth Huxley
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Elspeth Huxley
The unfolding over time of a great idea is like the growth of a fractal crystal, allowing details and refinements to multiply endlessly - but only in ever-increasing scale. ~ David Bayles
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by David Bayles
I don't know who started this thing about being perfect but the sooner we ditch that idea the happier we all will be! ~ Alastair Arnott
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Alastair Arnott
The culture of shame is driven by fear, blame and disconnection, and it is often a powerful incubator for issues like perfectionism, stereotyping, gossiping and addiction. ~ Brene Brown
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Brene Brown
... perfectionists often produce very little. ~ Elizabeth Grace Saunders
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Elizabeth Grace Saunders
Perfectionism is the enemy of profitability. ~ Mark Cuban
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Mark Cuban
In order to go on living one must try to escape the death involved in perfectionism. ~ Hannah Arendt
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Hannah Arendt
Wholeness lies beyond perfection. Perfection is only an idea. For most experts and many of the rest of us it has become a life goal...A perfectionist sees life as if it were one of those little pictures that used to appear in the newspapers over the caption "What's wrong with this picture?" If you looked at the picture carefully you would see that the table only had three legs or the house had no door. I remember the "Aha!" that these pictures evoked in me as a child. I wonder now why anyone would want to take such satisfaction in seeing what is missing, what is wrong, what is "broken." The pursuit of perfection has become a major addiction of our time. Fortunately, perfectionism is learned...which is why it's possible to recover. ~ Rachel Naomi Remen
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Rachel Naomi Remen
Flaws.
We all have them. BUT, they are all about perception. What I consider as a flaw may not be what someone else considers as a flaw. To me, a flaws is an imperfection or a fault in MY eyes. I consider my flaws to be things that I do not like about myself and things that I would like to change. ~ Horacio Jones
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Horacio Jones
90 percent perfect and shared with the world always changes more lives than 100 percent perfect and stuck in your head. ~ Jon Acuff
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Jon Acuff
Nothing worse than a man who makes excuses, blames others, and refuses responsibility for his own actions. No doubt there were real experiences that underlined the worthlessness of excuse makers for these men. ~ James MacDonald
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by James MacDonald
the truth of all that the Savage now said about the worthlessness of friends who could be turned upon so slight a provocation into persecuting enemies. ~ Aldous Huxley
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Aldous Huxley
We see a major trade in women, we see the torture of women as a form of entertainment, and we see women also suffering the injury of objectification - that is to say we are dehumanized. We are treated as if we are subhuman, and that is a precondition for violence against us.
I live in a country where if you film any act of humiliation or torture, and if the victim is a woman, the film is both entertainment and it is protected speech. Now that tells me something about what it means to be a woman citizen in this country, and the meaning of being second class.

When your rape is entertainment, your worthlessness is absolute. You have reached the nadir of social worthlessness. The civil impact of pornography on women is staggering. It keeps us socially silent, it keeps us socially compliant, it keeps us afraid in neighborhoods; and it creates a vast hopelessness for women, a vast despair. One lives inside a nightmare of sexual abuse that is both actual and potential, and you have the great joy of knowing that your nightmare is someone else's freedom and someone else's fun. ~ Andrea Dworkin
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Andrea Dworkin
Perfectionism may look good in his shiny shoes, but he's a little bit of an asshole and no one invites him to their pool parties. ~ Ze Frank
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Ze Frank
When perfectionism is driving us, shame is riding shotgun and fear is that annoying backseat driver! ~ Brene Brown
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Brene Brown
Perfectionism sucks the air out of your uniqueness and leaves you empty, away from who you could become. ~ Darryl Stewart Wellness
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Darryl Stewart Wellness

what's really unique about maternal anxiety today is our belief that if something goes wrong with or for our children, it's a reflection on us as mothers. Because we believe we should be able to control life so perfectly that we can keep bad things from happening. ~ Judith Warner
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Judith Warner
In East, South and Central Africa, the minority manipulated the majority into believing the minority was the majority, that there were more whites in the world than blacks; instilled in the blacks a sense of inferiority, inadequacy, worthlessness. ~ Peter Abrahams
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Peter Abrahams
I've internalized my father- his impatience, his perfectionism, his rage. I no longer need my father to torture me. From this day on, I can do it all by myself. ~ Andre Agassi
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Andre Agassi
Steve Jobs thus became the greatest business executive of our era, the one most certain to be remembered a century from now. History will place him in the pantheon right next to Edison and Ford. More than anyone else of this time, he made products that were completely innovative, combining the power of poetry and processors. With a ferocity that could make working with him as unsettling as it was inspiring, he also built the world's most creative company. And he was able to infuse into its DNA the design sensibilities, perfectionism, and imagination that make it likely to be, even decades from now, the company that thrives best at the intersection of artistry and technology. ~ Walter Isaacson
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Walter Isaacson
Once the notion of perfectionism is abolished, persistence is allowed its rightful place in guiding us in achieving our goals. ~ Carla Birnberg
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Carla Birnberg
Tell him I write of worms and corruption, because I like worms and corruption. Tell him I believe in the fundamental wickedness and worthlessness of man, & in the rot in life. Tell him I am all for cancers. And tell him, too, that I loathe poetry. I'd prefer to be an anatomist or the keeper of a morgue any day. Tell him I live exclusively on toenails and rumours. I sleep in a coffin too, and a wormy shroud is my summer suit. ~ Dylan Thomas
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Dylan Thomas
Ever feel like you're always winding up and never throwing it out? You might blame it on perfectionism or procrastination or preparation. You may even call it prudent. But whatever it is...IT'S NOT WORKING. I call this phenomenon "petrified performance." Where you're busy, busy, busy (on the wrong activities or the right activities for too long), and never accomplishing the idea or task you set out to do. You're stuck. Like a tree that once was lively is now dead and immovable like a stone. What once was a fluid idea is now frozen in time. How do you overcome petrified performance? With practice, silly. Everything you do should be considered a "project" because projects have a beginning and an end with a timeline. No more dreaming. Wake up and put those dreams to work by putting the steps necessary to make them happen on the calendar. Are you willing to practice? That's my prescription. ~ Richie Norton
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Richie Norton
When one thinks of all the people who support or have supported Fascism, one stands amazed at their diversity. What a crew! Think of a programme which at any rate for a while could bring Hitler, Petain, Montagu Norman, Pavelitch, William Randolph Hearst, Streicher, Buchman, Ezra Pound, Juan March, Cocteau, Thyssen, Father Coughlin, the Mufti of Jerusalem, Arnold Lunn, Antonescu, Spengler, Beverley Nichols, Lady Houston, and Marinetti all into the same boat! But the clue is really very simple. They are all people with something to lose, or people who long for a hierarchical society and dread the prospect of a world of free and equal human beings. Behind all the ballyhoo that is talked about 'godless' Russia and the 'materialism' of the working class lies the simple intention of those with money or privileges to cling to them. Ditto, though it contains a partial truth, with all the talk about the worthlessness of social reconstruction not accompanied by a 'change of heart'. The pious ones, from the Pope to the yogis of California, are great on the' change of heart', much more reassuring from their point of view than a change in the economic system. ~ George Orwell
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by George Orwell
[Judith Warner:] Our neurotic quest to perfect the mechanics of mothering can be interpreted as an effort to do on an individual level what we've stopped trying to do on a society-wide one. ~ Emily Matchar
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Emily Matchar
Here's the reality of life,' he said. ' You make decisions with imperfect information and achieve imperfect results. The alternative is to never make a decision and never achieve results. ~ Noelle Hancock
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Noelle Hancock
Perfection is a faux. It's a mask carved by our own poor esteem to hide who we really are and make others see what really isn't us. ~ Chinonye J. Chidolue
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Chinonye J. Chidolue
The notion of the perfect time is more than myth. It's the ultimate self-delusion. ~ Gina Greenlee
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Gina Greenlee
The opinions of the misanthropical rest upon this very partial basis, that they adopt the bad faith of a few as evidence of the worthlessness of all. ~ Christian Nestell Bovee
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Christian Nestell Bovee
We don't need to be perfect to do good deeds in the world, but we need to be sincere in our efforts. ~ Gudjon Bergmann
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Gudjon Bergmann
But on Kwajalein, the guards sought to deprive them of something that had sustained them even as all else had been lost: dignity. This self-respect and sense of self-worth, the innermost armament of the soul, lies at the heart of humanness; to be deprived of it is to be dehumanized, to be cleaved from, and cast below, mankind. ~ Laura Hillenbrand
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Laura Hillenbrand
So meanwhile, friends, enjoy your blessing:
This fragile life that hurries so!
Its worthlessness needs no professing,
And I'm not loathe to let it go;
I've closed my eyes to phantoms gleaming,
Yet distant hopes within me dreaming
Still stir my heart at times to flight:
I'd grieve to quit this world's dim light
And leave no trace, however slender.
I live, I write - not seeking fame;
And yet, I think, I'd wish to claim
For my sad lot its share of splendour -
At least one note to linger long,
Recalling, like some friend, my song. ~ Alexander Pushkin
Perfectionism Worthlessness quotes by Alexander Pushkin
Life is not that tough if you have a perfectionist sub-ordinate; life is a bit tough when you have a perfectionist peer; life is toughest when you have a perfectionist supervisor! ~ Abhishek Ratna
