Anybody can look at a pretty girl and see a pretty girl. An artist can look at a pretty girl and see the old woman she will become. A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be. But a great artist-a master-and that is what Auguste Rodin was-can look at an old woman, protray her exactly as she is ... and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be ... and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart ... no matter what the merciless hours have done to her. Look at her, Ben. Growing old doesn't matter to you and me; we were never meant to be admired-but it does to them. ~ Robert A. Heinlein
Old Wisdom quotes by Robert A. Heinlein
I like the old wisdom
puns, riddles, spells, proverbs. ~ Mason Cooley
Old Wisdom quotes by Mason Cooley
Who acts, shall endure. So speaks the voice of the age-old wisdom. ~ Aeschylus
Old Wisdom quotes by Aeschylus
THE OLD WISDOM
When the night wind makes the pine trees creak
And the pale clouds glide across the dark sky,
Go out my child, go out and seek
Your soul: The Eternal I.
For all the grasses rustling at your feet
And every flaming star that glitters high
Above you, close up and meet
In you: The Eternal I.
Yes, my child, go out into the world; walk slow
And silent, comprehending all, and by and by
Your soul, the Universe, will know
Itself: the Eternal I. ~ Jane Goodall
Old Wisdom quotes by Jane Goodall
When science shall have effectually demonstrated to us the origin of matter, and proved the fallacy of the occultists and old philosophers who held (as their descendants now hold) that matter is but one of the correlations of spirit, then will the world of skeptics have a right to reject the old Wisdom, or throw the charge of obscenity in the teeth of the old religions. ~ H. P. Blavatsky
Old Wisdom quotes by H. P. Blavatsky
But indeed nobody knows what inarticulate traditions, remnants of old wisdom, priceless though quite anonymous, survive in many modern things that still have life in them. ~ Thomas Carlyle
Old Wisdom quotes by Thomas Carlyle
Whenever a mind is simple and receives an old wisdom, old things pass away,
means, teachers, texts, temples fall; it lives now, and absorbs past and future into present hour. All things are made sacred by relation to it,
one as much as another. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Old Wisdom quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
N fact, there is no way to "return to the faith of your childhood," not really, unless you've just woken from a decades-long and absolutely literal coma. Faith is not some half-remembered country into which you come like a long-exiled king, dispensing the old wisdom, casting out the radical, insurrectionist aspects of yourself by which you'd been betrayed. No. Life is not an error, even when it is. That is to say, whatever faith you emerge with at the end of your life is going to be not simply affected by that life but intimately dependent upon it, for faith in God is, in the deepest sense, faith in life
which means that even the staunchest life of faith is a life of great change. It follows that if you believe at fifty what you believed at fifteen, then you have not lived
or have denied the reality of your life. ~ Christian Wiman
Old Wisdom quotes by Christian Wiman
Led by myself and two colleagues, the course offers a newly developed model of spiritual direction that draws on both the age-old wisdom of the church and more recent perspectives. I call it the Passion/Wisdom Model of Spiritual Direction, and I see it as offering the opportunity for our interior worlds and supernatural reality to meet. ~ Larry Crabb
Old Wisdom quotes by Larry Crabb
A wise, joyous bookit unfolds the knowledge and the beauty of the two lives it embraces-old wisdom and young discover, intertwining like vines. ~ Rex Reed
Old Wisdom quotes by Rex Reed
Old wisdom out of the cluster of gathering shadows. ~ George Mackay Brown
Old Wisdom quotes by George Mackay Brown
Dr. Asa Don Brown has successfully managed to amalgamate his own profound insights with centuries old wisdom and contemporary psychology to produce an unique, lucid and pragmatic work. His book will undoubtedly inspire those seeking inspiration, educate those seeking an education, and edify those seeking an edification. In a world where many are often making more but feeling less, this book will be a welcome addition to aid them in reconciling this frustrating chasm. ~ Tony Mann
Old Wisdom quotes by Tony Mann
>>How old were you when you had your first kiss?
>>Twenty. It's pathetic. Guys don't want to kiss fat girls.
>>Not true. There are all those guys on jerry springer, and there's president Clinton ...
>>Make that: no one I ever wanted to kiss wanted to kiss a fat girl.
>>I'll bet you never gave anyone a chance. Mitch says you practically beat him away with a stick.
>>I was trying to spare him. ~ Rainbow Rowell
Old Wisdom quotes by Rainbow Rowell
Pepper woke up thinking of butts.
And nothing else.
Ladies' butts.
Skinny butts, big butts, saddlebag butts, flabby and firm butts, the kind that sit so high they seem like part of the woman's back, the kind that ride low and form a UU just above the thighs like in the old television commercials for Hanes Underalls, butts that wiggle and butts that jiggle, sagging butts and robust butts, butts that hardly make an impression under a pair of jeans; sidewinder butts and trumpet butts
the ones so meaty they actually spread out until they appear to be a woman's thighs (ass so fat you can see it from the front), butts as knotty as acorns, butts as smooth as a slice of Gouda, butts with pimples and butts with cellulite, the kind that have pockmarks or red splotches, butts with tattoos and butts with bullet scars. Butts you can cup in your warm hands. Butts and butts and butts.
In other words, Pepper woke up horny. ~ Victor LaValle
Old Wisdom quotes by Victor LaValle
One who is ungrateful for little deserves nothing. One who is grateful for little deserves much. One who is grateful for much deserves all. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Old Wisdom quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
I've questioned this goddamn place since i could talk, some of us have depth we can't quite understand until we are much older. We rally across the world in seek of silencing this unbearable urge to speak a different tune and vibe a different energy, to fit in to a world unlike this. The isolation felt amongst thousands who don't really know you will one day have you gravitating towards a place where you can learn about yourself. Don't fight it, change with the seasons and give your life a reason. Solitude is so inviting you'll wonder why it took you this long to open its door. ~ Nikki Rowe
Old Wisdom quotes by Nikki Rowe
I was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of the trailer's tiny laundry room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer. ~ Ernest Cline
Old Wisdom quotes by Ernest Cline
Galapagos tortoise," she said. "I'm one hundred and seven years old." "Huh. And you don't look a day over a hundred and five," I said. ~ James Patterson
Old Wisdom quotes by James Patterson
Time ripens all things; no man is born wise. ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Old Wisdom quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
It gave her a sudden sense that it was now her turn to grow old, to find the world changing, sliding away from the old ways of being and behaving, so that you were gradually a stranger to the place you lived in. The woman priest with jogging clothes and a BlackBerry gave Mary a glimpse of what life must have been like for her mother as she grew older. ~ John Lanchester
Old Wisdom quotes by John Lanchester
It seems to take a lifetime for us to learn that wisdom consists largely in a graceful acceptance of things that do not immediately concern us. ~ Myrtle Reed
Old Wisdom quotes by Myrtle Reed
When I'm old and gray, I want to have a house by the sea. And paint. With a lot of wonderful chums, good music, and booze around. And a damn good kitchen to cook in. ~ Ava Gardner
Old Wisdom quotes by Ava Gardner
It is human misery and not pleasure which contains the secret of the divine wisdom. ~ Simone Weil
Old Wisdom quotes by Simone Weil
Contrary to the tenets of conventional wisdom, viral ideas and campaigns were not first transmitted via the electronic media of the Internet age. Their ideological forebears lived and replicated in the host coffee-houses, inns and taverns of the early eighteenth-century. ~ Gavin John Adams
Old Wisdom quotes by Gavin John Adams
Why are you this way, son?" the desperate father inquired.
"I was born to fit in, but can only achieve this standing out," the artist replied. ~ Matshona Dhliwayo
Old Wisdom quotes by Matshona Dhliwayo
Homes are built on the foundation of wisdom
and understanding. ~ Ikechukwu Joseph
Old Wisdom quotes by Ikechukwu Joseph
In every war, there are always elements of blindness. ~ Shimon Peres
Old Wisdom quotes by Shimon Peres
My people? Who are they?
I went into the church where the congregation
Worshiped my God. Were they my people?
I felt no kinship to them as they knelt there.
My people! Where are they?
I went into the land where I was born,
Where men spoke my language.
I was a stranger there.
"My people," my soul cried. "Who are my people?"
Last night in the rain I met an old man
Who spoke a language I do not speak,
Which marked him as one who does not know my God.
With apologetic smile he offered me
The shelter of his patched umbrella.
I met his eyes ... And then I knew ... ~ Rosa Zagnoni Marinoni
Old Wisdom quotes by Rosa Zagnoni Marinoni
My mentor in the transition from the old Gabriel Heatter and John Cameron Swayze way of doing things was David Brinkley. He brought an entirely different style to what we were doing. ~ Tom Brokaw
Old Wisdom quotes by Tom Brokaw
I was fifteen when I first met Sherlock Holmes, fifteen years old with my nose in a book as I walked the Sussex Downs, and nearly stepped on him. In my defense I must say it was an engrossing book, and it was very rare to come across another person in that particular part of the world in that war year of 1915. ~ Laurie R. King
Old Wisdom quotes by Laurie R. King
You need just what you do not know, and what you really know is worthless. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Old Wisdom quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
A pessimist sees the darkness around the light, but an optimist looks for the light in the darkness. ~ Debasish Mridha
Old Wisdom quotes by Debasish Mridha
And she is going to dance, dance hungry, dance full, dance each cold astonishing moment, now when she is young and again when she is old. ~ Anne Lamott
Old Wisdom quotes by Anne Lamott
We would never become friends with most if not all of the people with whom we have been friends for many years, if we had met them only a few weeks ago. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Old Wisdom quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
The past is our treasure. Its works, whether we know them or not, flourish in our lives with whatever strength they had. From it we draw provision for our journey, the collected wisdom whose harvests are all ours to reap and carry with us, though we may never live again in the fields that grew them. ~ Freya Stark
Old Wisdom quotes by Freya Stark
I wanted to be in 'Star Wars' when I was six years old. I asked my mom for two years, and she told me I was crazy. ~ Jennette McCurdy
Old Wisdom quotes by Jennette McCurdy
A few old shits and some fucking woman," he snarled. "We're backing down to the likes o' these without a fight?" "No, no." Hardbread slung his own scarred shield onto his back. "I'm backing down, and these fellows here. You're going to stay, and fight Whirrun of Bligh on your own." "I'm what?" Redcrow frowned at Whirrun, twitchy, and Whirrun looked back, what showed of his face still stony as the Heroes themselves. "That's right," said Hardbread, "since you're itching for a brawl. Then I'm going to cart your hacked-up corpse back to your mummy and tell her not to worry 'cause this is the way you wanted it. You loved this fucking hill so much you just had to die here. ~ Joe Abercrombie
Old Wisdom quotes by Joe Abercrombie
Chief Marilyn Slett, president of Coastal First Nations, is well aware of the forest's importance: "Our leaders understand our well being is connected to the well being of our land and waters...If we use our knowledge and our wisdom to look after [them], they will look after us into the future." The Kichiwa of Sarayaku, Ecuador, see their forest as "the most exalted expression of life itself. ~ Peter Wohlleben
Old Wisdom quotes by Peter Wohlleben
5-4-10 Tuesday 8:00 A.M.
Made a large batch of chili and spaghetti to freeze yesterday. And some walnut fudge! Relieved the electricity is still on.
It's another beautiful sunny day with fluffy white clouds drifting by. The last cloud bank looked like a dog with nursing pups.
I open the window and let in some fresh air filled with the scent of apple and plum blossoms and flowering lilacs. Feels like it's close to 70 degrees. There's a boy on a skate board being pulled along by his St. Bernard, who keeps turning around to see if his young friend is still on board.
I'm thinking of a scene still vividly displayed in my memory. I was nine years old. I cut through the country club on my way home from school and followed a narrow stream, sucking on a jawbreaker from Ben Franklins, and I had some cherry and strawberry pixie straws, and banana and vanilla taffy inside my coat pocket. The temperature was in the fifties so it almost felt like spring. There were still large patches of snow on the fairways in the shadows and the ground was soggy from the melt off.
Enthralled with the multi-layers of ice, thin sheets and tiny ice sickles gleaming under the afternoon sun, dripping, streaming into the pristine water below, running over the ribbons of green grass, forming miniature rapids and gently flowing rippling waves and all the reflections of a crystal cathedral, merging with the hidden world of a child. Seemingly endless natural sculptures.

Old Wisdom quotes by Andrew Neff
The most beautiful person is a person with kind heart and loving soul. ~ Debasish Mridha
Old Wisdom quotes by Debasish Mridha
I grew up in Evanston and lived in Chicago for a long time, in Old Town and Wrigleyville. I did three films when I was in high school. The first was 'Class,' with Rob Lowe. I had a supporting role in that. ~ John Cusack
Old Wisdom quotes by John Cusack
True heroes and ideas never fall in the final sense of the word. They can only encounter temporary setbacks in their difficult journey to progress and success, ~ Janvier Chouteu-Chando
Old Wisdom quotes by Janvier Chouteu-Chando
No night so wild but brings the constant sun With love and power untold; No time so dark but through its woof there run Some blessed threads of gold. ~ Christopher Pearse Cranch
Old Wisdom quotes by Christopher Pearse Cranch
By the year 2070 we cannot say, or it would be imbecile to do so, that any man alive could understand Shakespearean experience better than Shakespeare, whereas any decent eighteen-year-old student of physics will know more physics than Newton. ~ C.P. Snow
Old Wisdom quotes by C.P. Snow
Genuine wit implies no small amount of wisdom and culture. ~ Moses Harvey
Old Wisdom quotes by Moses Harvey
An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Old Wisdom quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
The time to buy stocks is consistently over time. You should never buy your investments with the idea, 'I have to get a certain return.' You should look at the best return possible and learn to live with that. But you should not try to make your investments earn what you feel you need. It doesn't work that way. The stock doesn't know you own it. ~ Warren Buffett
Old Wisdom quotes by Warren Buffett
Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. ~ Charles Dickens
Old Wisdom quotes by Charles Dickens
I don't know if I've learned anything yet! I did learn how to have a happy home, but I consider myself fortunate in that regard because I could've rolled right by it. Everybody has a superficial side and a deep side, but this culture doesn't place much value on depth - we don't have shamans or soothsayers, and depth isn't encouraged or understood. Surrounded by this shallow, glossy society we develop a shallow side, too, and we become attracted to fluff. That's reflected in the fact that this culture sets up an addiction to romance based on insecurity - the uncertainty of whether or not you're truly united with the object of your obsession is the rush people get hooked on. I've seen this pattern so much in myself and my friends and some people never get off that line.
But along with developing my superficial side, I always nurtured a deeper longing, so even when I was falling into the trap of that other kind of love, I was hip to what I was doing. I recently read an article in Esquire magazine called 'The End of Sex,' that said something that struck me as very true. It said: "If you want endless repetition, see a lot of different people. If you want infinite variety, stay with one." What happens when you date is you run all your best moves and tell all your best stories - and in a way, that routine is a method for falling in love with yourself over and over.
You can't do that with a longtime mate because he knows all that old material. With a long relationship ~ Joni Mitchell
