decade after the first edition of this book was published, Yan Wong and I met in the fitting surroundings of the Oxford Museum of Natural History to discuss the possibility of producing a new, tenth anniversary edition. Yan, once my undergraduate pupil, had been employed as my research assistant during the writing of the original edition, before he left for his lecturing position in Leeds and his career as a television presenter. He played an enormously important part in the conception and execution of the first edition, and he was credited as joint author of several of the chapters. During the course of our discussion ten years on, we realised that much new information had come in, especially from the molecular genetics laboratories of the world. Yan undertook the bulk of the revision and I proposed to the publisher that this time he should be properly credited as joint author of the whole book. ~ Richard Dawkins
Molecular Genetics quotes by Richard Dawkins
Meditation is not just blissing out under a mango tree. It completely changes your brain and therefore changes what you are. ~ Matthieu Ricard
Molecular Genetics quotes by Matthieu Ricard
It is my belief that the basic knowledge that we're providing to the world will have a profound impact on the human condition and the treatments for disease and our view of our place on the biological continuum. ~ J. Craig Venter
Molecular Genetics quotes by J. Craig Venter
Only a tiny fraction of corpses fossilize, and we are lucky to have as many intermediate fossils as we do. We could easily have had no fossils at all, and still the evidence for evolution from other sources, such as molecular genetics and geographical distribution, would be overwhelmingly strong. On the other hand, evolution makes the strong prediction that if a single fossil turned up in the wrong geological stratum, the theory would be blown out of the water. ~ Richard Dawkins
Molecular Genetics quotes by Richard Dawkins
I think that the formation of [DNA's] structure by Watson and Crick may turn out to be the greatest developments in the field of molecular genetics in recent years. ~ Linus Pauling
Molecular Genetics quotes by Linus Pauling
After comparing more than two thousand DNA samples, an American molecular geneticist, Dean Hamer, concluded that a person's capacity to believe in God is linked to his brain chemicals. Of all things! Why not his urine? Perhaps it will not be amiss to observe that Dr. Hamer has made the same claim about homosexuality, and if he has refrained from arguing that a person's capacity to believe in molecular genetics is linked to a brain chemical, it is, no doubt, owing to a prudent sense that once that door is open God knows how and when anyone will ever slam it shut again. ~ David Berlinski
Molecular Genetics quotes by David Berlinski
Molecular genetics, our latest wonder, has taught us to spell out the connectivity of the tree of life in such palpable detail that we may say in plain words, "This riddle of life has been solved." ~ Max Delbruck
Molecular Genetics quotes by Max Delbruck
Much of my work in biology has been driven by my early training in chemistry. When studying a new chemical compound, the first and most important thing is to determine its detailed molecular structure. ~ Richard J. Roberts
Molecular Genetics quotes by Richard J. Roberts
All modern humans are related to what scientists call "Mitochondrial Eve." This refers to our common matrilineal ancestor. She lived approximately 200,000 years ago and depending on how you estimate the length of a generation, we are only 5,000 to 10,000 generations from one another. To put it another way, each of us is a cousin of one another at most 10,000 times removed. And yes, Mitochondrial Eve lived in Africa, so, in a very real way, we are all Africans. ~ Desmond Tutu
Molecular Genetics quotes by Desmond Tutu
People don't want to accept the responsibility for their own weakness, so they place the blame on something that they're not responsible for, like disease or genetics. ~ James Frey
Molecular Genetics quotes by James Frey
You are a collection of almost identical molecules with a different collective label. But is that all? Is there nothing in here but molecules? Some people find this idea somehow demeaning to human dignity. For myself, I find it elevating that our universe permits the evolution of molecular machines as intricate and subtle as we. ~ Carl Sagan
Molecular Genetics quotes by Carl Sagan
Harry Mount hints at the possibility that I was admitted to Magdalen in 1960 because my father had been senior scholar there a quarter of a century earlier. I was, in fact, the winner of an open scholarship; Mr Mount should learn the difference between genetics and nepotism. ~ Michael Beloff
Molecular Genetics quotes by Michael Beloff
Mutants are necessary to maintain the essence of our selves. Our genomes has negotiated a fragile balance between counterpoised forces, pairing strand with opposite strand, mixing past and future, pitting memory against desire. It is the most human of all things that we possess. Its stewardship may be the ultimate test of knowledge and discernment of our species. ~ Siddhartha Mukherjee
Molecular Genetics quotes by Siddhartha Mukherjee
If A denotes one of the two constant traits, for example, the dominating one, a the recessive, and the Aa the hybrid form in which both are united, then the expression: gives the series for the progeny of plants hybrid in a pair of differing traits. ~ Gregor Mendel
Molecular Genetics quotes by Gregor Mendel
I cannot imagine a more enjoyable place to work than in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology where I work. ~ Venkatraman Ramakrishnan
Molecular Genetics quotes by Venkatraman Ramakrishnan
An important attribute of metabolites is their close relationship to both the biological states of interest (i.e. disease status) and relevant genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic variants causally related to the disease state. As such, metabo-profiles can be viewed as an intermediate measure that links pre-disposing genes and environmental exposures to a resulting disease state. Causal metabolites also typically have a stronger relationship (i.e. larger effect size) to the underlying genetics and the disease phenotype. Thus, the integration of metabolomic data into systems biology approaches may provide a missing link between genes and disease states. ~ Joseph Loscalzo
Molecular Genetics quotes by Joseph Loscalzo
I was a close observer of the developments in molecular biology. ~ John Pople
Molecular Genetics quotes by John Pople
Karma means ultimate responsibility. You even take responsibility for your genetics. ~ Jaggi Vasudev
Molecular Genetics quotes by Jaggi Vasudev
The tallest adults are the ones who had the most childhood and adolescent growth before puberty started; puberty typically tacks on a standard nine inches, and then the game's over. "The children who are going to be the biggest adults are those who are tall by age one or two, and have a relatively late puberty," says Rosenfeld. ~ Arianne Cohen
Molecular Genetics quotes by Arianne Cohen
One of the major lessons in all of biochemistry, cell biology and molecular medicine is that when proteins operate at the sub cellular level, they behave in a certain way as if they're mechanical machinery. ~ James Rothman
Molecular Genetics quotes by James Rothman
To save the human race and the world, we must correct the evolutionary mistakes by changing the genetics of men. ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Molecular Genetics quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
DNA testing poses questions that people in the adoptee community have thought about far longer than such testing has been around. Will my birth mother/father/half-sister be happy to know me? And more broadly, what is that person to me? What do we mean when we speak of 'family'? How much does genetics get to tell us about who we are? ~ Libby Copeland
Molecular Genetics quotes by Libby Copeland
By then, I was making the slow transition from classical biochemistry to molecular biology and becoming increasingly preoccupied with how genes act and how proteins are made. ~ Paul Berg
Molecular Genetics quotes by Paul Berg
He turned to leave, then hesitated. "One more thing."
He walked up to me. "I've also been thinking about your declaration of undying love or whatever."
"I didn't - it wasn't -"
He clamped his hands on the sides of my gooey face and kissed me.
I had to wonder: was it possible to dissolve into chocolate on a molecular level and melt into a puddle on the carpet? Because that's how I felt. I'm pretty sure Valhalla had to resurrect me several times during the course of that kiss. Otherwise, I don't know how I was still in one piece when Alex finally pulled away.
He studied me critically, his brown and amber eyes taking me in. He had a chocolate moustache and goatee now, and chocolate down the front of his sweater vest.
I'll be honest. A small part of my brain thought, Alex is male right now. I have just been kissed by a dude. How do I feel about that?
The rest of my brain answered: I have just been kissed by Alex Fierro. I am absolutely great with that.
In fact, I might have done something typically embarrassing and stupid, like making the aforementioned declaration of undying love, but Alex spared me.
"Eh." He shrugged. "I'll keep thinking about it. I'll get back to you. In the meantime, definitely take that shower."
He left, whistling a tune that might have been a Frank Sinatra song from the elevator, "Fly Me to the Moon". ~ Rick Riordan
Molecular Genetics quotes by Rick Riordan
Music is everything; without it, we [people] are nothing. We're just living vibrations of molecular tinglings, and without music we'd explode into nothing and go down a quantum hole. ~ Ron Rothfield
Molecular Genetics quotes by Ron Rothfield
These days vampires gravitated toward particle accelerators, projects to decode the genome, and molecular biology. Once they had flocked to alchemy, anatomy, and electricity. If it went bang, involved blood, or promised to unlock the secrets of the universe, there was sure to be a vampire around. ~ Deborah Harkness
Molecular Genetics quotes by Deborah Harkness
Our highest contribution is making this world peaceful and happy. That comes when we can radiate peace and harmony from every cell, gene and DNA of our body. ~ Amit Ray
Molecular Genetics quotes by Amit Ray
What is actually observed in so-called 'biplar children'? If you read the research reports carefully, they describe broad and persistent emotional dysregulation. Although these children have mood swings, they do not develop manic or hypomanic episodes. They are moody, irritable, oppositional and likely to misbehave - like all children with disruptive behavior disorders. Their grandiose thinking usually consists of little beyond boastfulness. No evidence from genetics, neurobiology, follow-up studies or treatment response shows that this syndrome has anything in common with classical bipolarity. ~ Joel Paris
Molecular Genetics quotes by Joel Paris
The difference of somebody of winning and losing, has nothing to do with their genetics, has nothing to do with their potential. ~ Greg Plitt
Molecular Genetics quotes by Greg Plitt
The words are strung together, with their own special grammar-the laws of quantum theory-to form sentences, which are molecules. Soon we have books, entire libraries, made out of molecular "sentences." The universe is like a library in which the words are atoms. Just look at what has been written with these hundred words! Our own bodies are books in that library, specified by the organization of molecules-but the universe and literature are organizations of identical, interchangeable objects; they are information systems. ~ Heinz Pagels
Molecular Genetics quotes by Heinz Pagels
When I turned 30, due to my father's heart history and my family genetics, I vowed to start seeing a cardiologist every year and just really be proactive and take my own heart health into my own hands. ~ Jennie Garth
Molecular Genetics quotes by Jennie Garth
I decided to pursue graduate study in molecular biology and was accepted by Professor Itaru Watanabe's laboratory at the Institute for Virus Research at the University of Kyoto, one of a few laboratories in Japan where U.S.-trained molecular biologists were actively engaged in research. ~ Susumu Tonegawa
Molecular Genetics quotes by Susumu Tonegawa
My dad worked for Del Monte and then for Monsanto as one of the chief scientists on the Calgene Flavr Savr Tomato. But it was a huge disaster because the tomato didn't taste good. And then my dad started his own genetics company and I began doing that with him. He and I ran a genetics company for 10 years. And so I sold seeds to Florida. ~ Sanjay Rawal
Molecular Genetics quotes by Sanjay Rawal
Entirely my own opinion," said Ivanov. "I am glad that we have reached the heart of the matter soon. In other words: you are convinced that "we" – that is to say, the Party, the State and the masses behind it – no longer represent the interests of the Revolution."
"I should leave the masses out of it," said Rubashov. […] "Leave the masses out of it, " he repeated. "You understand nothing about them. Nor, probably, do I any more. Once, when the great "we" still existed, we understood them as no one had ever understood them before. We had penetrated into their depths, we worked in the amorphous raw material of history itself…" […] "At that time," Rubashov went on, "we were called the Party of the Plebs. What did the others know of history? Passing ripples, little eddies and breaking waves. They wondered at the changing forms of the surface and could not explain them. But we had descended into the depths, into the formless, anonymous masses, which at all times constituted the substance of history; and we were the first to discover her laws of motion. We had discovered the laws of her inertia, of the slow changing of her molecular structure, and of her sudden eruptions. That was the greatness of our doctrine. The Jacobins were moralists; we were empirics. We dug in the primeval mud of history and there we found her laws. We knew more than ever men have known about mankind; that is why our revolution succeeded. And now you have buried it all again…." […] "Well," said Rubashov ~ Arthur Koestler
Molecular Genetics quotes by Arthur Koestler
Periodization isn't magic--you can't out-periodize your genetics, drug users, or stupidity. ~ Craig Cecil
Molecular Genetics quotes by Craig Cecil
When I deal with smart IT programmers, I have a strong impression that their job has much in common with the phenomenon of how the Lord arranged the Universe and created genetics (cells, DNA, molecules, etc.). Both genetics and computer programming create their magic by performing highly intelligent coding work. ~ Sahara Sanders
Molecular Genetics quotes by Sahara Sanders
You and I don't have the same genetics, we don't live in the same places, but we can have the same basic attitude - being comfortable in our skin. ~ Mireille Guiliano
Molecular Genetics quotes by Mireille Guiliano
I think nobody would claim that random genetic drift is capable of producing adaptation, that is to say the illusion of design. Random genetic drift can't produce wings that are good at flying, or eyes that are good at seeing, or legs that are good at running. But random genetic drift probably is very important in driving evolution at the molecular genetic level. ~ Richard Dawkins
Molecular Genetics quotes by Richard Dawkins
The most profound change that genetics brings about might not be scientific at all. It might be mental and even spiritual enrichment: a more expansive sense of who we humans are, existentially, and where we came from, and how we fit with other life on earth. ~ Sam Kean
Molecular Genetics quotes by Sam Kean
The family trees of all of us, of whatever origin or trait, must meet and merge into one genetic tree of all humanity by the time they have spread into our ancestries for about 50 generations. ~ Guy Murchie
Molecular Genetics quotes by Guy Murchie
Genetics loads the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger. ~ Caldwell Esselstyn
Molecular Genetics quotes by Caldwell Esselstyn
For Aristotle, it is not within our power to seek anything else, and thus /all/ acts have for their basic purpose the attainment of happiness or that which is good in itself and not merely as a means to something else. ~ Robert F. Almeder
