If you're a writer, you write. If you don't, you're dead. You have no home, no reason to be offered a seat at any table, and no reason to live. ~ James Grissom
James Grissom quotes by James Grissom
My places were emotional, primarily. I wrote of locales in which I had lived, or in which I imagined I could live, but the topography was primal and sexual and terminal. It bore no distinct architecture or design or dialect. It was merely human and in peril, which is to say universal. But on Royal and Coliseum and Vista--streets I cannot relinquish--I found my places and I dreamed a narrative. Can I go there and find it again?"--Tennessee Williams ~ James Grissom
James Grissom quotes by James Grissom
All of us are seeking a home, and I don't mean where we were born, or where we now live and have things, but where we can do the big things, the right things. Where we belong, where we fit, where we're loved."--Tennessee Williams, "Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog ~ James Grissom
James Grissom quotes by James Grissom
Memory, of course, is unreliable, often evil, but it is the source of our identity."--Tennessee Williams ~ James Grissom
James Grissom quotes by James Grissom
I turn and I walk my tray to the conveyor and I drop it on the belt and I start to walk out of the Dining Hall. As I head through the Glass Corridor separating the men and women, I see Lilly sitting alone at a table. She looks up at me and she smiles and our eyes meet and I smile back. She looks down and I stop walking and I stare at her. She looks up and she smiles again. She is as beautiful a girl as I have ever seen. Her eyes, her lips, her teeth, her hair, her skin. The black circles beneath her eyes, the scars I can see on her wrists, the ridiculous clothes she wears that are ten sizes too big, the sense of sadness and pain she wears that is even bigger. I stand and I stare at her, just stare stare stare. Men walk past me and other women look at me and LIlly doesn't understand what I'm doing or why I'm doing it and she's blushing and it's beautiful. I stand there and I stare. I stare because I know where I am going I'm not going to see any beauty. They don't sell crack in Mansions or fancy Department Stores and you don't go to luxury Hotels or Country Clubs to smoke it. Strong, cheap liquor isn't served in five-star Restaurants or Champagne Bars and it isn't sold in gourmet Groceries or boutique Liquor stores. I'm going to go to a horrible place in a horrible neighborhood run by horrible people providing product for the worst Society has to offer. There will be no beauty there, nothing even resembling beauty. There will be Dealers and Addicts and Criminals and Whores and ~ James Frey
James Grissom quotes by James Frey
Designing the technical aspects of my camera movement for me is very important. I want the camera to be a big part in telling the story as well, like what I really believe in with all the films I make. ~ James Wan
James Grissom quotes by James Wan
I'm glad you like adverbs - I adore them; they are the only qualifications I really much respect. ~ Henry James
James Grissom quotes by Henry James
He could feel all of it so clearly it was as if it were happening right then. But more than that, he felt sorrow. Someone had just tried to do the same thing to his baby girl. Had tried to kill her, not because he hated her, but because she was standing in the path of his political statement. Everyone who died on that shuttle had been a Felcia to someone. And with the click of a button he'd killed them. He ~ James S.A. Corey
James Grissom quotes by James S.A. Corey
A great nation is not saved by wars, it is saved by acts without external picturesqueness; by speaking, writing, voting reasonably; by smiting corruption swiftly; by good temper between parties; by the people knowing true men when they see them, and preferring them as leaders to rabid partisans and empty quacks. ~ William James
James Grissom quotes by William James
With his heart falling into a black abyss, Thomas pulled the trigger.
- pg.250 ~ James Dashner
James Grissom quotes by James Dashner
A double sided sword is crafted under heat and pressure and comes out ever more beautiful because of it. ~ James Jean-Pierre
James Grissom quotes by James Jean-Pierre
Whereas most people automatically anticipate the consequences of their actions, automatically feel shame for unkind deeds, automatically understand why they should persist in the face of frustration, automatically distrust propositions that seem too good to be true, and are automatically aware of their commitments to others, psychopaths may only become aware of such factors with effort. ~ James Blair
James Grissom quotes by James Blair
But knowing that the world had come full circle to our Depression story didn't change the way we worked on it, or encourage us to change our thrust. I want people to be able to pick up this book in the future no matter what's going on in the world, and appreciate it on its own merits, not for any perceived winks at the headlines. ~ James Vance
James Grissom quotes by James Vance
It's a very old axiom, but do you believe the end can justify the means? When there's no choice left? ~ James Dashner
James Grissom quotes by James Dashner
What's your name?"
"Bond. James Bond. What's yours?"
She reflected "Rider."
"What Rider?"
"Honeychile."
Bond smiled. ~ Ian Fleming
James Grissom quotes by Ian Fleming
There is not a shadow of right in the general government to intermingle with religion. Its least interference with it would be a most flagrant usurpation. ~ James Madison
James Grissom quotes by James Madison
It's the same thing now. When I go onstage the young people scream and holler as much as the older generation. ~ Etta James
James Grissom quotes by Etta James
No one sees further into a generalization than his own knowledge of detail extends. ~ William James
James Grissom quotes by William James
Compared with men, it is probable that brutes neither attend to abstract characters, nor have associations by similarity. Their thoughts probably pass from one concrete object to its habitual concrete successor far more uniformly than is the case with us. In other words, their associations of ideas are almost exclusively by contiguity. So far, however, as any brute might think by abstract characters instead of by association of con cretes, he would have to be admitted to be a reasoner in the true human sense. How far this may take place is quite uncertain. ~ William James
James Grissom quotes by William James
Now here's Amy Pond, standing in the freezing ocean, holding the body of her imaginary friend, and shouting at the sea to make him better.
Yeah. If only my therapists could see me now. ~ James Goss
James Grissom quotes by James Goss
Brand planning must continue to paint a vivid description of the consumer today. The challenge is that it can feel like this picture changes daily. Planning's job is to help separate the temporary shifts from foundational understanding that underpins overall behaviour. ~ James W. Moseley
James Grissom quotes by James W. Moseley
Qualifications don't count. All Ike did was invade Europe and look like your uncle. ~ James Ellroy
James Grissom quotes by James Ellroy
Those who aim low usually hit their targets. ~ James M. Barrie
James Grissom quotes by James M. Barrie
Our Teddy! Teddy Lupin! Snogging our Victoire! Our cousin! And I asked Teddy what he was doing
-James Sirius Potter ~ J.K. Rowling
James Grissom quotes by J.K. Rowling
You cannot friend upon conventional information sources to give you an objective and timely warning about how the world is changing and why. ~ James Dale Davidson
James Grissom quotes by James Dale Davidson
Reading was a big thing, yes. Books were a big thing. But the things that stick out were the newspapers. ~ James Earl Jones
James Grissom quotes by James Earl Jones
Extreme independence is as destructive to a relationship as total dependence. ~ James Dobson
James Grissom quotes by James Dobson
You never think of films being really creepy that you're in because you just remember the funny stuff. ~ Pell James
James Grissom quotes by Pell James
But in this case," he continues, tracing the line of the plasterwork with one finger, "I feel that there is one cliche that sums up my position so admirably that it would be pure egotism to attempt a more interesting periphrasis. Plain speaking, therefore, there is to be.
"There is undoubtedly a strong possibility, notwithstanding the vagaries of contingency and misfortune, that my son might
have fallen - or might, we could say, have voluntarily jumped, in accordance with the ethical codes with which he has been brought up - for a play you have made with some success, although, as I am persuaded you would concede, very little originality."
Plain speaking if you're Henry James, perhaps. ~ Deborah Meyler
James Grissom quotes by Deborah Meyler
It's also quite possible she still detests me."

Tyler dismissed this with a wave. "You're going to let a thing like that stop you?"

"I was thinking intense despisement might be an obstacle in pursuing her, yes."

"No, see, that's what makes it all the more interesting," Tyler said. He adopted a grandly dramatic tone. "'Does our fair Ms. Kendall truly loathe the arrogant Mr. Jameson as she so ardently proclaims, or is it all just a charade to cover more amorous feelings for a man she reluctantly admires?'"

Up front, the cabdriver snorted loudly. He appeared to be enjoying the show.

"Psych 101 again?" J.D. asked.

Tyler shook his head. "Lit 305: Eighteenth-Century Women's Fiction." He caughtJ.D.'s look and quickly defended himself. "What? I took it because of the girls in the class. Anyway, I see a bit of a P and P dynamic going on between you and Payton."

J.D. didn't think he wanted to know. Really. But he asked anyway. "P and P?"

Tyler shot him a look, appalled. "Uh, hello - Pride and Prejudice?" His tone said only a cretin wouldn't know this.

"Oh right, P and P," J.D. said. "You know, Tyler, you might want to pick up your balls - I think they just fell right off when you said that."

Up front, the cabdriver let out a good snicker. ~ Julie James
James Grissom quotes by Julie James
I try to do the right thing, Holden. But there are times when it's not obvious what that is." "I agree with you," Holden said. "Right up to the part where you tell me this is one of those times. ~ James S.A. Corey
James Grissom quotes by James S.A. Corey
Formative Christian worship paints a picture of the beauty of the Lord--and a vision of the shalom he desires for creation--in a way that captures our imagination....The biblical vision of shalom--of a world where the Lamb is our light, where swords are beaten into ploughshares, where abundance is enjoyed by all, where people from every tribe and tongue and nation sing the same song of praise, where justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like an everlasting stream--is the vision that should be enacted in Christian worship. ~ James K.A. Smith
James Grissom quotes by James K.A. Smith
You can notice that those who are more loving and conciliatory do not try to force their truth upon us and have learned to express their truth in ways that still allow for others' truth to be heard and felt. We can see in our daily experience that there are, in fact, many people who carry in their presence a magnanimity and life-enhancing energetic that invites tolerance, spaciousness for difference, and a capacity to be comfortable with ambiguity. ~ James O'Dea
James Grissom quotes by James O'Dea
It was the tragic part of happiness; one's right was always made of the wrong of some one else. ~ Henry James
James Grissom quotes by Henry James
The boy's bravery solidified something in Thomas's heart. He loved the kid. He loved him as if they had the same mum. ~ James Dashner
James Grissom quotes by James Dashner
There are people in the world for whom "coming along" is a perpetual process, people who are destined never to arrive. ~ James Baldwin
James Grissom quotes by James Baldwin

HUDSON TAYLOR – THE PROGRESSION OF A MISSIONARY CALL:

As child, at age 5: When I am a man, I mean to be a missionary and go to China.

As a young man:I feel I cannot go on living unless I do something for China.

Late in life, as a veteran missionary:
If I had 1,000 lives, I'd give them all for China. ~ James Hudson Taylor
James Grissom quotes by James Hudson Taylor
That's what ever great writer, I believe, has done over the course of time - is they've figured out new ways of telling the same stories. ~ James Frey

A writer has to take all the risks of putting down what he sees. ~ James A. Baldwin
James Grissom quotes by James A. Baldwin

James Grissom quotes by James Patterson
Frequent and violent temptations were a proof that the citadel of the soul had not fallen and that the devil raged to make it fall. ~ James Joyce
James Grissom quotes by James Joyce
In practice, sin's counterfeit of God's love is impossible to perfect, for perfection here ends in the void, the undoing of the bonds of creation. The soul that falls away into sin continues to love mortal beloveds, but its attachments lack measure, and so its love goes begging. It wanders about aimlessly in a 'wasteland of need' (regio egestatis). ~ James Wetzel
James Grissom quotes by James Wetzel
The antagonisms between men and women express themselves in the most delicate phase of their life together - in their sexual relationship. ~ C.L.R. James
James Grissom quotes by C.L.R. James
You have to pretend to be cool, which I never am. ~ Lily James
James Grissom quotes by Lily James
Understand this: you no longer represent your homeworlds solely. "Coruscant, Alderaan, Chandrila ... All these and tens of thousands of worlds far removed from the Core are cells of the Empire, and what affects one, affects us all. No disturbances will be tolerated. "Interplanetary squabbles or threats of secession will meet with harsh reprisals. I have not led us through three years of galactic warfare to allow a resurgence of the old ways. The Republic is extinct. ~ James Luceno
James Grissom quotes by James Luceno
Sleep well, gentlemen, for tomorrow we become connoisseurs of shite. ~ James K. Morrow
James Grissom quotes by James K. Morrow
Over a wide field of our economy it is still the better course to rely on the nineteenth century's "hidden hand" than to thrust clumsy bureaucratic fingers into its sensitive mechanism. In particular, we cannot afford to damage its mainspring, freedom of competitive enterprise. ~ John James Cowperthwaite
James Grissom quotes by John James Cowperthwaite
Third, it is helpful to seek advice from those who are spiritually mature and solid in their faith. A godly counselor or pastor can assist you in avoiding the common mistakes that confuse many young people. ~ James C. Dobson
James Grissom quotes by James C. Dobson
What interest, zest, or excitement can there be in achieving the right way, unless we are enabled to feel that the wrong way is also a possible and a natural way, nay, more, a menacing and an imminent way? And what sense can there be in condemning ourselves for taking the wrong way, unless we need have done nothing of the sort, unless the right way was open to us as well? I cannot understand the willingness to act, no matter how we feel, without the belief that acts are really good and bad. ~ William James
