Something new seems to be at work in the contemporary world - a process that is eating away the very heart of social life, not merely by putting salesmanship in place of moral virtue, but by putting everything - virtue included - on sale. ~ Roger Scruton
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Roger Scruton
Classical liberalism . . . does not wholly define modern American conservatism. There is an added element: a concern with social and civic virtue. The term virtue has become a bad word in some quarters of American life. (It is especially unpopular with the chronically wicked and depraved.) Young people, especially, tend to associate it with finger-wagging and with people who tell you how to live your life. This is a very narrow view of virtue: It applies only to what it is good to do, rather than what it is good to be and what it is good to love. . . .

Conservatives recognize, of course, that people frequently fall short of these standards. In their personal conduct, conservatives do not claim to be better than anyone else. . . . But for conservatives, these lapses do not provide an excuse to get rid of the standards. Even hypocrisy--professing one thing but doing another--is in the conservative view preferable to a denial of standards because such denial leads to moral chaos or nihilism. ~ Dinesh D'Souza
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Dinesh D'Souza
We will not adopt the fantastic hypocrisy of modern conservatism which preaches the values of families and communities, while conducting a direct assault on them through reduced wages and conditions and job security. ~ Paul Keating
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Paul Keating
The increasingly cynical court thought Arthur, hypocritical, as all decent men must be if you assume decency cannot exist. ~ T.H. White
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by T.H. White
Here, amid the murk of such contradictory opinions, was ample opportunity for Augustus to consolidate his position yet further. Who better qualified than the Restorer of the Republic, after all, to realise the full potential of hypocrisy? ~ Tom Holland
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Tom Holland
My favourite writer is Beckett and I keep going back to wallow in his work like a deep pool of dark humour or like an oxygen tank when you can't breath in a world consumed by piety, hypocrisy and self-satisfaction. ~ Simon Critchley
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Simon Critchley
Americans deify democracy in a way that allows for a dim awareness that they have, from time to time, stood in defiance of their God. But democracy is a forgiving God and America's heresies - torture, theft, enslavement - are so common among individuals and nations that none can declare themselves immune. ~ Ta-Nehisi Coates
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Ta-Nehisi Coates
They attend with Pharisaical strictness to the outward forms of religion, and at the same time neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith. ~ Frederick Douglass
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Frederick Douglass
The enemy was irony and truth and hypocrisy, that was the real enemy. That was the enemy that was killing him. ~ James McBride
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by James McBride
Hypocrisy is the homage freedom pays to social convention. ~ Marty Rubin
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Marty Rubin
Just as Napoleon was the sole authority in the state, so the husband and father was to exercise authority over his family. Unfortunately the only possible result of despotism on either level is hypocrisy. ~ J. Christopher Herold
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by J. Christopher Herold
Psychologically speaking, one may say that the hypocrite is too ambitious; not only does he want to appear virtuous before others, he wants to convince himself. ~ Hannah Arendt
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Hannah Arendt
But the Church cannot be, in any political sense, either conservative or liberal, or revolutionary. Conservatism is too often conservation of the wrong things: liberalism a relaxation of discipline; revolution a denial of the permanent things. ~ T. S. Eliot
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by T. S. Eliot
Immorality is the word we use to describe people that are not sinning the same way we are. ~ Shannon L. Alder
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Shannon L. Alder
We don't need the gospels, we need the fiery men who wrote them! ~ Rudolfo Anaya
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Rudolfo Anaya
For neo-conservatism is a quintessentially Jewish project: a re-sanctification in everyday life of the core values of western civilisation, and the achievement of human potential through virtuous practice. The neo-cons' crucial insight is that public signals through law, custom and tradition are the key to getting people to behave well. And that is a Jewish insight. ~ Melanie Phillips
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Melanie Phillips
Modern society is perverse, not in spite of its puritanism or as if from a backlash provoked by its hypocrisy; it is in actual fact, and directly, perverse. ~ Michel Foucault
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Michel Foucault
And it was then, watching him eat before me, that I realised there was inconsistency in him. He said there was no difference between Chosen and Quelled; he said men were not more sacred than women, nor women less than men; he said we were side by side, matched in every way; he said all these things - but his life spoke differently. He still ate before me, first, as my lord. And in that simple act, he undid all his words. ~ Sherryl Jordan
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Sherryl Jordan
The point is that there is tremendous hypocrisy among the Christian right. And I think that Christian voters should start looking at global warming and extreme poverty as a religious issue that speaks to the culture of life. ~ Al Franken
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Al Franken
over-the-top humor and iconoclastic take on conformity, censorship, hypocrisy, and sexual inhibition. Mad magazine on steroids, with sound. Talking about the album and his band several months later, Frank Zappa said, "I am trying to use the weapons of a disoriented and unhappy society against itself. The Mothers of Invention are designed to come in the back door and kill you while you're sleeping. ~ Candy Leonard
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Candy Leonard
I had trouble putting the book down - at least, it was very hard to do whenever I was forced to by other obligations. I received it in the mail on a Thursday and finished it that following Sunday night (this is FAST for me, given everything else I have on my plate).

Anyway, this book is amazing - I was quite literally floored by the information it contained as it was stuff I hadn't heard about due to selective (heavily slanted against Jackson) media coverage at the time.

I was like a lot of people back then . . . I thought that MJ might have very well been guilty of the accusations and I remember feeling a bit annoyed that he "got off" when the jury found him not guilty.

Well, since then I have realized that my knowledge of all the facts of the case (as well as the 1993 allegations) was sorely lacking and I've done a complete about-face with regard to Michael Jackson.

It's clear to me now that the "accusers" were a bunch of frauds (I do recall feeling a bit skeptical about them at the time but didn't explore those suspicions further, as I was also doubtful about Jackson's innocence). When the testimony and facts are taken into consideration it becomes glaringly obvious that Michael Jackson was an innocent man who was taken advantage of on numerous occasions.

If privacy ends where hypocrisy begins, Kitty Kelley's steamy expose is a contribution to contemporary history. ~ Eleanor Clift
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Eleanor Clift
One can imagine the look the two lovers exchanged; it was like a flame, for virtuous lovers have not a shred of hypocrisy. ~ Honore De Balzac
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Honore De Balzac
To send a child to rot in the prison of Cuba for the alleged sake of his own well-being is criminal hypocrisy. ~ Leonard Peikoff
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Leonard Peikoff
To believe in God is a good thing, a right thing. But when you reinforce your belief with words you take from the Old Testament that you seek out, and interpret in the ways that suit your needs best, that is hypocrisy, ~ V.C. Andrews
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by V.C. Andrews
Was truly a great advantage. I assert most unhesitatingly, that the religion of the south is a mere covering for the most horrid crimes, - a justifier of the most appalling barbarity, - a sanctifier of the most hateful frauds, - and a dark shelter under, which the darkest, foulest, grossest, and most infernal deeds of slaveholders find the strongest protection. ~ Frederick Douglass
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Frederick Douglass
The task of the political philosopher can only be to influence public opinion, not to organize people for action. He will do so effectively only if he is not concerned with what is now politically possible but consistently defends the "general principles which are always the same." In this sense I doubt whether there can be such a thing as a conservative political philosophy. Conservatism may often be a useful practical maxim, but it does not give us any guiding principles which can influence long-range developments. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
Summer Between Terms"

The day's so calm and muggy I sweat tears,
the summer's cloudcap and the summer's heat...
surely good writers write all possible wrong--
are we so conscience-dark and cataract-blind,
we only blame in others what they blame in us?
(The sentence writes we, when charity wants I...)
It takes such painful mellowing to use error...
I have stood too long on a chair or ladder,
branch-lightening forking through my thought and veins--
I cannot hang my heavy picture straight.
I can't see myself...in the cattery,
the tomcats doze till the litters are eatable,
then find their kittens and chew off their breakable heads.
They told us by harshness to win the stars.

Planes, trains, lorries simmer through the garden,
the reviewer sent by God to humble me
ransacking my bags of dust for silver spoons--
he and I go on typing to go on living.
There are ways to live on words in England--
reading for trainfare, my host ruined on wine,
my ear gone bad from clinging to the ropes.
I'd take a lower place, eat my toad hourly;
even big frauds wince at fraudulence,
and squirm from small incisions in the self--
they live on timetable with no time to tell.
I'm sorry, I run with the hares now, not the hounds.
I waste hours writing in and writing out a line,
as if listening to conscience were telling the truth ~ Robert Lowell
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Robert Lowell
Sometimes I wonder what the world would be like if we all got along. If there were no terrorism, Islamophobia, Western hypocrisy, corrupt government in African countries (especially Liberia), sexism, nativism, people like Donald Trump, stereotypes, war, Capitalism, Communism, Marxism and xenophobia. ~ Henry Johnson Jr
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Henry Johnson Jr
I would say I am very much more interested in ethics than in code/ morality. I think it's in this way that one avoids the conservatism inherent in "the moral". ~ Richard Marshall
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Richard Marshall
Here was someone who had dismissed most of what I had just been saying as too obvious to even discuss; yet apparently it wasn't obvious enough. I realized that he was the living embodiment of one of the greatest paradoxes of human behavior:

Common sense is not common action. ~ Shawn Achor
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Shawn Achor
A man far oftener appears to have a decided character from persistently following his temperament than from persistently following his principles. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Celebration of Independence Day with great pomp and show was quite appropriate when we were fighting for independence which we had neither seen nor handled. Now we have handled it and we seem to be disillusioned. At least - I am, even if you are not. What are we celebrating today? Surely, not our disillusionment. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
The Right likes to think that intellectuals and academics like Allan Bloom and Dinesh D'Souza spurred the explosive growth of movement conservatism in the 1980s and 1990s, when it was actually mostly Rush Limbaugh. ~ Alex Pareene
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Alex Pareene
It's hypocrisy of men makes these hills grim ~ Jack Kerouac
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Jack Kerouac
Taqwaa (piety) is the driving force behind living faith. Without it, faith is only a meaningless jumble of memorized words and phrases, and 'righteous' deeds only shells of pretence and hypocrisy. ~ Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips
I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said. ~ William F. Buckley, Jr.
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by William F. Buckley, Jr.
Religious hypocrisy is one of the great barriers to faith for any thoughtful person. Why become a Christian when the church is filled with so many hypocrites and deeply flawed people? Mark ~ John Ortberg
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by John Ortberg
I challenge you to be finished with rationalizations and hypocrisy. ~ James MacDonald
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by James MacDonald
Society gains nothing whilst a man, not himself renovated, attempts to renovate things around him; he has become tediously good insome particular but negligent or narrow in the rest; and hypocrisy and vanity are often the disgusting result. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
It is the duty of a great person so to demean himself, as that whatever endowments he may have, he may appear to value himself upon no qualities but such as any man may arrive at. ~ Richard Steele
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Richard Steele
The typical capitalists are lovers of power rather than sensual indulgence, but they have the same tendency to crush and to take tribute that the cruder types of sensualism possess. The discipline of the capitalist is the same as that of the frugalist. He differs from the latter in that he has no regard for the objects through which productive power is acquired. HE does not hesitate to exploit natural resources, lands, dumb animals and even his fellowman. Capital to such a man is an abstract fund, made up of perishable elements which are quickly replaced… The frugalist…stands in marked contrast to the attitude of the capitalist. The frugalist takes a vital interest in his tools, in his land, and in the goods he produces. He has a definite attachment to each. He dislikes to see an old coat wear out, an old wagon break down, or an old horse go lame. He always thinks of concrete things, wants them and nothing else. He desires not land, but a given farm, not horses or cattle and machines, but particular breeds and implements; not shelter, but a home…. He rejects as unworthy what is below standard and despises as luxurious what is above or outside of it. Dominated by activities, he thinks of capital as a means to an end. ~ Ellen Ruppel Shell
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Ellen Ruppel Shell
It is hypocrisy for man to make any other use of his religion, or the credit of it, than to sanctify and save his soul. ~ Benjamin Whichcote
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Benjamin Whichcote
It is really not so repulsive to see the poor asking for money as to see the rich asking for more money. And advertisement is the rich asking for more money. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by G.K. Chesterton
There are many things that men and women ought to think about, and must think about, in private, that they would not for a moment discuss in public. There are books on the proper conduct of women in certain most sacred relations of life, relations of life which are as holy as any, and which can be entered into in the presence of a holy God with no question of His approval, but which do not permit of public mention. . . .

That the Bible is a pure book is evidenced by the fact that it is not a favourite book in dens of infamy. But on the other hand, books that try to make out that the Bible is an obscene book, and that endeavour to keep people from reading it, are favourite books in dens of infamy. The unclean classes, both men and women, were devoted admirers of the most brilliant man this country ever produced who attacked what he called the "obscenity of the Bible." These unclean classes do not frequent Bible classes. They do frequent infidel lectures.

These infidel objectors to the book as an "obscene book" constantly betray their insincerity and hypocrisy. Colonel Ingersoll . . . objected to the Bible for telling these vile deeds "without a touch of humour." In other words, he did not object to telling stories of vice, if only a joke was made of the sin. Thank God, that is exactly what the Bible does not do--make a joke of sin. It makes sin hideous, so men who are obscene in their own hearts object to the Bible as being an obscene book. . . .

R.A. Torrey
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by R.A. Torrey
No president likes leaks, but it's worth noting candidate Trump's path to power was tread on a road of leaks. He didn't have a problem with leaks then. It's not a moral position if you only hold it when it applies to you. ~ Jake Tapper
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Jake Tapper
What! Would you make no distinction between hypocrisy and devotion? Would you give them the same names, and respect the mask as you do the face? Would you equate artifice and sincerity? Confound appearance with truth? Regard the phantom as the very person? Value counterfeit as cash? ~ Moliere
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Moliere
It is our hypocrisy and self-focus that drains us. When we become purpose centered, internally directed other focused and externally open, we discover energy we didn't know we had. ~ Robert E. Quinn
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Robert E. Quinn
If you limit the search for truth and forbid men anywhere, in any way, to seek knowledge, you paralyze the vital force of truth itself.
In the best sense of the word, Jesus was a radical. His religion has been so long identified with conservation
often with conservatism of the obstinate and unyielding sort
that it is almost startling for us sometimes to remember that all of the conservatism of his own times was against him; that it was the young, free, restless, sanguine, progressive part of the people who flocked to him. ~ Phillips Brooks
Hypocrisy Conservatism Frauds quotes by Phillips Brooks
