When Communism fell in 1989, the temptation for Western commentators to gloat triumphantly proved irresistible. This, it was declared, marked the end of History. Henceforth, the world belonged to liberal capitalism – there was no alternative – and we would all march forward in unison towards a future shaped by peace, democracy and free markets. Twenty years on this assertion looks threadbare.

There can be no question that the fall of the Berlin Wall and the domino-like collapse of Communism states from the suburbs of Vienna to the shores of the Pacific marked a very significant transition: one in which millions of men and women were liberated from a dismal and defunct ideology and its authoritarian institutions. But no one could credibly assert that what replaced Communism was an era of idyllic tranquility. There was no peace in post-Communist Yugoslavia, and precious little democracy in any of the successor states of the Soviet Union.

As for free markets, they surely flourished, but it is not clear for whom. The West – Europe and the United States above all – missed a once-in-a-century opportunity to re-shape the world around agreed and improved international institutions and practices. Instead, we sat back and congratulated ourselves upon having won the Cold War: a sure way to lose the peace. The years from 1989 to 2009 were consumed by locusts. ~ Tony Judt
Gloat quotes by Tony Judt
There you go, being human again,' said the Doctor. He put an arm around Rose, and hugged her to him. 'It's not fair, is it, when we're forced into pitying someone we hate. Feels lik the world's turned topsy-turvy. But it's all right. You're still allowed to hate them. As long as you don't gloat at their downfall, that's all. ~ Jacqueline Rayner
Gloat quotes by Jacqueline Rayner
It is not wrong to strive to be better than a fellow human being. Nor is it wrong to desire to be better or even to feel like oneself is better than a fellow human being. What is wrong is to gloat in one's own virtue. Therefore, gloating in one's own virtue is not virtuous. ~ Christopher Jones
Gloat quotes by Christopher Jones
It was the crossbows that decided Turkos, although his decision was almost too fast to be described as thought.
Even as they emerged from the shadow to gloat over their prisoners, he reared his horse - his precious horse, that he loved, Athena.
She reared obediently, and her broad stomach and long neck took all six of the crossbow bolts meant for him. And because she was all heart, she landed on four feet and continued forward after her iron-shod forefeet crushed the skulls of two warriors.
And then she fell. ~ Miles Cameron
Gloat quotes by Miles Cameron
Something Vimes had learned as a young guard drifted up from memory. If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat.
They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar.
So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word. ~ Terry Pratchett
Gloat quotes by Terry Pratchett
I don't like to sit back and gloat, because the world is fragile. Life is fragile, so I never really gloat. ~ Donald Trump
Gloat quotes by Donald Trump
And it's the President of the United States who said he wasn't going to spike the football and all this, we shouldn't gloat about it, running campaign ads, gloating about it and saying the other guy isn't good enough to do the tough things that I did, which I think is, one reprehensible. ~ Jonah Goldberg
Gloat quotes by Jonah Goldberg
None of us mentioned An Evening of Long Goodbyes, whose race had been so catastrophic that, by the end, neither Frank nor I could summon the will to gloat. He had begun badly, getting his head stuck in the gate and having to be extricated by the stewards, and continued with a series of humiliating and distinctly uncanine trips and stumbles, disgracing himself beyond redemption in the third lap, when his muzzle came off and, to the boos of the crowd, he abandoned the race to leap over the hoardings and snatch a hot dog from the hand of a small boy. ~ Paul Murray
Gloat quotes by Paul Murray
These women accept their beatings with a simplicity worthy of all praise, and far from considering themselves insulted, admire the strength and energy of the man who can administer such eloquent rebukes. In Russia, not only may a man beat his wife, but it is laid down in the catechism and taught all boys at the time of confirmation as necessary at least once a week, whether she has done anything or not, for the sake of her general health and happiness."

I thought I observed a tendency in the Man of Wrath rather to gloat over these castigations.

"Pray, my dear man," I said, pointing with my whip, "look at that baby moon so innocently peeping at us over the edge of the mist just behind that silver birch; and don't talk so much about women and things you don't understand. What is the use of your bothering about fists and whips and muscles and all the dreadful things invented for the confusion of obstreperous wives? You know you are a civilised husband, and a civilised husband is a creature who has ceased to be a man.

"And a civilised wife?" he asked, bringing his horse close up beside me and putting his arm round my waist, "has she ceased to be a woman?"

"I should think so indeed,--she is a goddess, and can never be worshipped and adored enough. ~ Elizabeth Von Arnim
Gloat quotes by Elizabeth Von Arnim
Why do I get the feeling that to say "fancy meeting you here" would hardly be apt? Sharks can smell blood from miles away, I hear. ~ Amanda Browning
Gloat quotes by Amanda Browning
Many gloat over their own troubles. ~ Mason Cooley
Gloat quotes by Mason Cooley
Hell's bells," I muttered. "Harry, you idiot, when will you learn not to victory gloat? ~ Jim Butcher
Gloat quotes by Jim Butcher
Not in order to justify, but simply in order to explain my lack of consistency, I say: Look at my present life and then at my former life, and you will see that I do attempt to carry them out. It is true that I have not fulfilled one thousandth part of them [Christian precepts], and I am ashamed of this, but I have failed to fulfill them not because I did not wish to, but because I was unable to. Teach me how to escape from the net of temptations that surrounds me, help me and I will fulfill them; even without help I wish and hope to fulfill them.

Attack me, I do this myself, but attack me rather than the path I follow and which I point out to anyone who asks me where I think it lies. If I know the way home and am walking along it drunkenly, is it any less the right way because I am staggering from side to side! If it is not the right way, then show me another way; but if I stagger and lose the way, you must help me, you must keep me on the true path, just as I am ready to support you. Do not mislead me, do not be glad that I have got lost, do not shout out joyfully: "Look at him! He said he was going home, but there he is crawling into a bog!" No, do not gloat, but give me your help and support. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Gloat quotes by Leo Tolstoy
Once you best a man, never gloat. Be generous and find something in his actions to praise. He won't enjoy being bested but he'll make a good face about it. Show him you appreciate it. Praise can win you a friend. Gloating will only ever make enemies. ~ John Flanagan
Gloat quotes by John Flanagan
His smile faded into something awed, something ... reverent, and I reached out to cup his face in my hands-
To find my skin glowing.
Faintly, as if some inner light shone beneath my skin, leaking out into the world. Warm and white light, like the sun-like a star. Those wonder-filled eyes met mine, and Rhys ran a finger down my arm. Well, at least now I can gloat that I can literally make my mate glow with happiness. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Gloat quotes by Sarah J. Maas
If you want someone dead then do it. I keep saying this. Don't gloat – just shoot. ~ Jodi Taylor
Gloat quotes by Jodi Taylor
I wish I could line up naked the men I've slept with and just gloat for a hot minute. Beautiful creatures. ~ Crystal Woods
Gloat quotes by Crystal Woods
Years from now, when I'm successful and happy, ... and he's in prison ... I hope I'm not too mature to gloat. ~ Bill Watterson
Gloat quotes by Bill Watterson
That seemed to relax him a little, that simple nothing of a reassurance, as though there was ever a doubt that she wasn't exactly where she wanted to be at this very moment. As if there was even the slightest chance that she would rather be with Grady than Jay. He squeezed her hand, still holding it, and pulled her down so that she was leaning over his chest.
"Kiss me again," he challenged, only half joking.
It was so weird to hear him say that, to hear those words out loud. They had kissed. More than once. More than a lot. They had passed the point of being "just friends" by a long shot.
She leaned down and gave him a dry, sisterly little peck. And then she leaned back up again and smiled at him innocently. She wished she could make a halo appear above her head for effort.
Jay made a sound at her that was like a growl, and then he pulled her down...hard. He flipped her over so that she was lying on her back and he was poised above her, and taking full advantage of his upper hand, he moved his lips over hers with a feather-light touch, in a way that was anything but innocent. Until she parted his lips and let him kiss her again...completely...thoroughly. She heard herself moan, and she could feel the throbbing of her own pulse flickering hotly through her veins.
He lifted his head and started down at her, rubbing his thumb across her lower lip. "That's what I was talking about. A real kiss."
She thought that he was probably trying to gloat, but s ~ Kimberly Derting
Gloat quotes by Kimberly Derting
I left the sadomasochist dump with a girl from the south of France named Simone. She was wearing a tight blue dress with red wine spilled down the front of it. She was so drunk, she didn't care. "Fuck it," she kept saying in English, "you know?" The tattooed doorman called out an endearment to us as we emerged for his cave ... We linked arms and walked. Simone was talking about her new boyfriend, but I didn't listen. I was thinking about Lisa's shame at Naxos, trying to gloat. But Alex was right- even a young girls shame could be beautiful. ~ Mary Gaitskill
Gloat quotes by Mary Gaitskill
Just to gloat at mum and dad's golden girl brought low. But ~ David Nicholls
Gloat quotes by David Nicholls
Restrain yourself ... and gloat in silence. I'll have no jubilation here. It is an impious thing to exult over the slain. ~ Homer
Gloat quotes by Homer
Jose understands winning and losing are twins in a way. When you win you don't gloat and when you lose you don't go bananas. ~ Alex Ferguson
Gloat quotes by Alex Ferguson
This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience - it looks for a way of being constructive.
Love is not possessive.
Love is not anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own ideas.
Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage.
Love is not touchy.
Love does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it is glad with all good men when truth prevails.
Love knows no limits to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that stands when all else has fallen. ~ Elisabeth Elliot
Gloat quotes by Elisabeth Elliot
There are many people who have no idea what they should be living for, or the meaning of their lives, nor have they any guide to tell right from wrong. God looks down at people in that kind of spiritual fog, that spiritual stupidity, and he doesn't say, "You idiots." When we look at people who have brought trouble into their lives by their own foolishness, we say things like "Serves them right" or we mock them on social media: "What kind of imbecile says something like this?" When we see people of the other political party defeated, we just gloat. This is all a way of detaching ourselves from them. We distance ourselves from them partly out of pride and partly because we don't want their unhappiness to be ours. God doesn't do that. Real compassion, the voluntary attachment of our heart to others, means the sadness of their condition makes us sad; it affects us. That is deeply uncomfortable, but it is the character of compassion. (121) ~ Timothy J. Keller
Gloat quotes by Timothy J. Keller
You'll get over being mad at me."
"Not likely."
Step, step, step
"I promise not to gloat about it when you do."
"I won't."
Step, step, step
"Because I want to be with you so badly I don't care if you're screaming at me the whole time as long as I'm with you."
I stop dead in my tracks. ~ Tera Lynn Childs
Gloat quotes by Tera Lynn Childs
Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one. Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude; never selfish, not quick to take offense. Love keeps no score of wrongs; does not gloat over other men's sins, but delights in the truth. There is nothing love cannot face; there is no limit to its faith, its hope, and endurance. [ ... ] In a word, there are three things that last forever: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of them all is love. ~ Anonymous
Gloat quotes by Anonymous
I used to sit in the studio with a copy of the (Saturday Evening) Post laid across my knees ... And then I'd conjure up a picture of myself as a famous illustrator and gloat over it, putting myself in various happy situations, surrounded by admiring females, deferred to by office flunkies at the magazines, wined and dined by the editor ... ~ Norman Rockwell
Gloat quotes by Norman Rockwell
He rebelled against the highest as if the highest were the lowest - as if the power that could create a heart for bliss, might gloat on its sufferings. ~ George MacDonald
Gloat quotes by George MacDonald
I shouldn't gloat, but every man needs a little beauty in his life, and Elle is my princess. ~ Heidi McLaughlin
Gloat quotes by Heidi McLaughlin
We were both satellites orbiting Denny's sun, struggling for gravitational supremacy. Of course, she had the advantage of her tongue and her thumbs, and when I watched her kiss and fondle him sometimes she would glance at me and wink as if to gloat: Look at my thumbs! See what they can do! ~ Garth Stein
Gloat quotes by Garth Stein
A final word of advice: don't gloat about how well you have done. ~ Howard Raiffa
Gloat quotes by Howard Raiffa
I don't like to walk around with trophies though, so the price goes up if the client wants something to gloat over. ~ Martyn V. Halm
Gloat quotes by Martyn V. Halm
I used to read the obituaries to gloat over all the people I've outlived, but now I don't think it matters, we all live for just a moment anyway. ~ Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold
Gloat quotes by Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold
If you were anyone else, I'd tell you it's unbecoming to gloat."
But you'd tell me ... "
That even gloating becomes you. It's a sad thing, an intelligent woman in love. ~ Emma Bull
Gloat quotes by Emma Bull
Sorry to disappoint the liberals who tuned in tonight to gloat about Obama's lead in every poll, but I am not worried. McCain may be behind, but the man is a fighter. He doesn't know the meaning of the word 'quit.' He used to, but it was stored in the same part of his brain that remembered to vet his running mate. ~ Stephen Colbert
Gloat quotes by Stephen Colbert
The prophet Micah preached to his downtrodden people: Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen [true, not to be minimized], I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light. (7:8 NIV) ~ Louie Giglio
Gloat quotes by Louie Giglio
It is women who love horror. Gloat over it. Feed on it. Are nourished by it. Shudder and cling and cry out-and come back for more. ~ Bela Lugosi
Gloat quotes by Bela Lugosi
Among the white scouts were numbered some of the most noted of their class. The most prominent man among them was "Wild Bill".

Wild bill was a strange character, just the one which a novelist might gloat over.

Whether on foot or on horseback, he was one of the most perfect types of physical manhood I ever saw. Of his courage there could be no question; it had been brought to the test on too many occasions to admit a doubt.

His skill in the use of the rifle and pistol was unerring; while his deportment was exactly the opposite of what might be expected from a man of his surroundings. It was entirely free of bluster or bravado.

He seldom spoke of himself unless requested to do so. His conversation, strange to say, never bordered either on the vulgar or blasphemous.

His influence among the frontiersmen was unbounded, his word was law; and many are the personal quarrels and disturbances which he has checked among his comrades by his simple announcement that "this has gone far enough" if need be followed by the ominous warning that when persisted in or renewed the quarreler "must settle it with me".

Wild Bill is anything but a quarrelsome man; yet no one but himself can enumerate the many conflicts in which he has been engaged, and which have almost invariably resulted in the death of his adversary.

I have personal knowledge of at least half a dozen men whom he has at various times killed, one of th ~ George Armstrong Custer
Gloat quotes by George Armstrong Custer
The horrible ugliness of this exposure of a sick and guilty heart to the very eye that would gloat over it! ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne
Gloat quotes by Nathaniel Hawthorne
No, not really. But ... " Okay, I couldn't help but gloat a little. "She likes me."
Samedi didn't even look at me. "Well of course, you've had that bloody uniform on all day. I was half ready to tell you how much I liked you. ~ Lia Habel
Gloat quotes by Lia Habel
The disease of addiction, for all the pain and damage it causes, is an invitation to see this prodigal God in action. The question is, will we? Will we as the church step out of our comfort zones into uncharted territory that will at times be unpredictable and even scary for us? Or will we, like the older son, gloat, sulk and stomp off in resentment? Would we rather be party poopers or partygoers, estranged children or reconciled ones? ~ Jonathan Benz
Gloat quotes by Jonathan Benz
I don't fall for words, I fall for action because words always carry empty promises but one step at a time is the beginning of fulfilment. Don't say just do it! Don't announce just show it! Don't gloat just prove it! ~ Euginia Herlihy
Gloat quotes by Euginia Herlihy
There could be something wrong with me because I see Negroes neither better nor worse than any other race. Race pride is a luxury I cannot afford. There are too many implications bend the term. Now, suppose a Negro does something really magnificent, and I glory, not in the benefit to mankind, but the fact that the doer was a Negro. Must I not also go hang my head in shame when a member of my race does something execrable? If I glory, then the obligation is laid upon me to blush also. I do glory when a Negro does something fine, I gloat because he or she has done a fine thing, but not because he was a Negro. That is incidental and accidental. It is the human achievement which I honor. I execrate a foul act of a Negro but again not on the grounds that the doer was a Negro, but because it was foul. A member of my race just happened to be the fouler of humanity. In other words, I know that I cannot accept responsibility for thirteen million people. Every tub must sit on its own bottom regardless. So 'Race Pride' in me had to go. And anyway, why should I be proud to be Negro? Why should anyone be proud to be white? Or yellow? Or red? After all, the word 'race' is a loose classification of physical characteristics. I tells nothing about the insides of people. Pointing a achievements tells nothing either. Races have never done anything. What seems race achievement is the work of individuals. The white race did not go into a laboratory and invent incandescent light. That was Edison. ~ Zora Neale Hurston
Gloat quotes by Zora Neale Hurston
Every time we cheer the downfall of a powerful woman, we're giving ourselves the message that power is bad and we shouldn't desire it. Every time we revel in a beautiful woman's aging or weight gain, we reinforce the idea that we, too, are less valuable if we are old or overweight. Every time we gloat over a woman's loss of a husband to a younger, prettier rival, we are reminding ourselves that our own relationship is unstable, that someday our man, too, will move on to greener pastures. ~ Susan Shapiro Barash
Gloat quotes by Susan Shapiro Barash
As children we hoard and gloat over words. Words give ownership: we name our world and we claim it ... Children trust the power of words. ~ Julia Cameron
Gloat quotes by Julia Cameron
Yeah what were you doing at Wrestlemania? Ohhhh yeeeeah I'd like to know. You weren't there to gloat were you? No I guess you weren't. ~ Randy Savage
Gloat quotes by Randy Savage
Ari's coming with backup. Should I pretend we barely survived without his help or gloat that we didn't need him at all?"
"Tough decision," I said.
"You can't go wrong with either one," Kade said.
"You guys are no fun. I have to go with the gloating. But no mention of that magic stuff. It ruins the effect." Janco rushed off. ~ Maria V. Snyder
Gloat quotes by Maria V. Snyder
You repay the debt," he said. "That should be more than enough."

"What if I disagree? And what if, after all your trouble, I still say no?"

"I have ways to insist."

"I have ways to decline."

"You'll pay one way or the other," he said.

"In euros? Dollars? How much do I owe you?"

If he registered the sarcasm, he didn't react to it. "You pay in the only currency that holds value to you," he said. "You pay in innocent life."

The words stung like a hard smack across the face and her eyes smarted as if she'd been physically struck. He should not know these things.

Casual indifference remained plastered on her face while deep below, in that hollow crevice where madness had lain dormant these last nine months, the slow, steady percussion of war tapped out, faint but perceptible.

"Which innocents?" she said.

He waved his hand with that dismissive gesture. "Innocents are innocents," he said.
"Is one life really valued higher than another?"

From the fear bubbling to the surface, she instinctively knew. Knew that the only way a man in his position could gloat as if he owned her was if he held what she deemed most priceless. ~ Taylor Stevens
Gloat quotes by Taylor Stevens
Well, that all worked out nicely," Edward said from my hand.
"Yup." I sat down and propped the postcard upright against my books. "Thanks."
"Whatever for?"
"Being real,I guess. I'm pretty sure this paper about your life will get me into NYU.Which, when you think about it, is a pretty great gift from a guy I've never met who's been dead for a hundred years."
Edward smiled. It was nice to see. "My pleasure, darling girl. I must say, I like this spark of confidence in you."
"About time,huh?"
"Yes,well.Have you forgiven the Bainbridge boy?"
"For...?"
"For hiding you."
"He wasn't.I was hiding me." I gave Edward a look before he could gloat. "Yeah, yeah. You've always been very wise. But this isn't really about my forgiving Alex,is it?"
He had the grace to look a little embarrassed. "I suppose not. So?"
"So.I think you were a good guy, Edward. I think you probably would have told everyone exactly how you felt about Marina of you could have.If she hadn't been married, maybe, or if you'd lived longer. I think maybe all the pictures of you did of her were your public delcaration. Whaddya think? Can I write that? Is it the truth?"
"Oh,Ella." His face was sad again, just the way he'd cast it in bronze. But it was kinda bittersweet now, not as heartbroken. "I would give my right arm to be able to answer that for you.You know I would."
"You don't have a right arm,Mr. Willing. Left, either." I picked up the card again. "Fuhgeddabo ~ Melissa Jensen
Gloat quotes by Melissa Jensen
What is it in absinthe that makes it a separate cult? The effects of its abuse are totally distinct from those of other stimulants. Even in ruin and in degradation it remains a thing apart: its victims wear a ghastly aureole all their own, and in their peculiar hell yet gloat with a sinister perversion of pride that they are not as other men. ~ Aleister Crowley
Gloat quotes by Aleister Crowley
Sam grinned. He even laughed.
"What's funny?" she demanded.
"I figured something out before Astrid the Genius. I am totally enjoying that. I'm just going to gloat here for a minute."
"Enjoy it, it may never happen again, ~ Michael Grant
Gloat quotes by Michael Grant
I mean, I hate to gloat, but I'm extremely satisfied with my position in life and the way things have worked out for me. ~ Al Yankovic
Gloat quotes by Al Yankovic
The appalling destruction and misery of this war mount hourly: destruction of what should be (indeed it is) the common wealth of Europe, and the world, if mankind were not so besotted, wealth the loss of which will affect us all, victors or not. Yet people gloat to hear of the endless lines, 40 miles long, of miserable refugees, women and children pouring West, dying on the way. There seems no bowels of mercy or compassion, no imagination, left in this dark diabolic hour. By which I do not mean that it may not all, in the present situation, mainly (not solely) created by Germany, be necessary or inevitable. But why gloat! We were supposed to have reached a stage of civilization in which it might still be necessary to execute a criminal, but not to gloat, or to hang his wife and child by him while the orc-crowd hooted. The destruction of Germany, be it 100 times merited, is one of the most appalling world-catastrophes. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Gloat quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
