Our lives are full of supposes. Suppose this should happen, or suppose that should happen; what could we do; how could we bear it? But, if we are living in the high tower of the dwelling place of God, all these supposes will drop out of our lives. We shall be quiet from the fear of evil, for no threatenings of evil can penetrate into the high tower of God. ~ Hannah Whitall Smith
Fear Of Evil quotes by Hannah Whitall Smith
Remember, never to fear the power of evil more than your trust in the power and love of God. ~ Hermas One Of The Seventy
Fear Of Evil quotes by Hermas One Of The Seventy
They hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD, 30 They would have none of my [Wisdom's] counsel And despised my every rebuke. 31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies. 32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil. ~ Anonymous
Fear Of Evil quotes by Anonymous
Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness.
It was deeper and more intimate that the fear of evil and capricious gods and of magic, the fear of the forest, and of the forces of nature, malevolent, red in tooth and claw.
Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself. ~ Chinua Achebe
Fear Of Evil quotes by Chinua Achebe
There certainly can and will be plenty of external difficulties in life; nevertheless, the soul that comes unto Christ dwells within a personal fortress, a veritable palace of perfect peace. 'Whoso hearkeneth unto me,' Jehovah says, 'shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil' (Prov. 1:33). ~ Jeffrey R. Holland
Fear Of Evil quotes by Jeffrey R. Holland
It is the fate of those who toil at the lower employments of life, to be rather driven by the fear of evil, than attracted by the prospect of good; ~ Samuel Johnson
Fear Of Evil quotes by Samuel Johnson
Fear of God is a liberating emotion, freeing one from a disabling fear of evil, powerful people. This needs to be emphasized because many people see fear of God as onerous rather than liberating. ~ Dennis Prager
Fear Of Evil quotes by Dennis Prager
When worse may yet befall, there's room for prayer,
But when our fortune's at its lowest ebb,
We trample fear beneath our feet, and live
Without a fear of evil yet to come. ~ Ovid
Fear Of Evil quotes by Ovid
The occurrence of an evil thought is an affliction; not to continue it is the remedy. ~ Katsuki Sekida
Fear Of Evil quotes by Katsuki Sekida
I think if you're looking for a pure expression of evil, torture is pretty - is a pretty good candidate. ~ Mark Danner
Fear Of Evil quotes by Mark Danner
But all of these hours were strained by fear, as if fear were a brooding specter, or a strange, lost bird trapped in our little town, whose sooty wing flecked every living thing with a shadow that would never wash. I didn't know what I was afraid of, nor why I worried so much, nor why this thing that could so easily cause panic felt like hope sometimes and, like hope in the darkest moments, brought such joy, unreal joy, joy with a noose tied around it. The thud my heart gave when I saw him unannounced both terrified and thrilled me. I was afraid when he showed up, afraid when he failed to, afraid when he looked at me, more frightened yet when he didn't. ~ Andre Aciman
Fear Of Evil quotes by Andre Aciman
PETA's campaign should be included in school curricula. If we can open children's hearts and minds to animals' needs, teach them to treat a dog or a chicken as if they feel fear and love and pain - as they do - then they will grow up to understand that we are all worthy of respect. ~ Ingrid Newkirk
Fear Of Evil quotes by Ingrid Newkirk
Because of fear, they made shelter and found food and grew things. For the same reason, weapons were stored, waiting. ~ Lois Lowry
Fear Of Evil quotes by Lois Lowry
Sometime the witch hunting takes on atrocious dimensions - the Nazi persecution of Jews, the Salem witch trials, the Ku Klux Klan scapegoating of blacks. Notice, however, that in all such cases the persecutor hates the persecuted for precisely those traits that the persecutor displays with a glaringly uncivilized fury. At other times, the witch hunt appears in less terrifying proportions - the cold war fear of a "Commie under every bed," for instance. And often, it appears in comic form - the interminable gossip about everybody else that tells you much more about the gossiper than about the object of gossip. But all of these are instances of individuals desperate to prove that their own shadows belong to other people.

Many men and women will launch into tirades about how disgusting homosexuals are. Despite how decent and rational they otherwise try to behave, they find themselves seized with a loathing of any homosexual, and in an emotional outrage will advocate such things as suspending gay civil rights (or worse). But why does such an individual hate homosexuals so passionately? Oddly, he doesn't hate the homosexual because he is homosexual; he hates him because he sees in the homosexual what he secretly fears he himself might become. He is most uncomfortable with his own natural, unavoidable, but minor homosexual tendencies, and so projects them. He thus comes to hate the homosexual inclinations in other people - but only because he first hates them in himself ~ Ken Wilber
Fear Of Evil quotes by Ken Wilber
Lovers of truth do not fear stormy or dirty water. What we fear is shallow water! ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Fear Of Evil quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution. ~ John Adams
Fear Of Evil quotes by John Adams
Someone who claims to write with emotion recollected in tranquility, is a fool and a liar. To understand is to tremble. To recollect is to re-enter and riven ... I admire the authority of being on one's knees in front of an event. ~ Harold Brodkey
Fear Of Evil quotes by Harold Brodkey
It has come to me with a fight. It has come to me the hard way, through tears and fog and fear and chaos, and now has landed in the palm of my hand like a firefly. There now, I have had my vision. ~ Shauna Niequist
Fear Of Evil quotes by Shauna Niequist
Walter Scott has no business to write novels, especially good ones. - It is not fair. - He has fame and profit enough as a poet, and should not be taking the bread out of other people's mouths. - I do not like him, and do not mean to like Waverley if I can help it - but fear I must. ~ Jane Austen
Fear Of Evil quotes by Jane Austen
A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things men have always done. If a story seems moral, do not believe it. If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit of rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie. There is no rectitude whatsoever. There is no virtue. As a first rule of thumb, therefore, you can tell a true war story by its absolute and uncompromising allegiance to obscenity and evil. ~ Tim O'Brien
Fear Of Evil quotes by Tim O'Brien
We want character but without unyielding conviction; we want strong morality but without the emotional burden of guilt or shame; we want virtue but without particular moral justifications that invariably offend; we want good without having to name evil; we want decency without the authority to insist upon it; we want more community without any limitations to personal freedom. In short, we want what we cannot possibly have on the terms that we want it. ~ James Davison Hunter
Fear Of Evil quotes by James Davison Hunter
Self-knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, which is the ending of fear. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
Fear Of Evil quotes by Jiddu Krishnamurti
Words speak to the mind through the ears; actions speak to the mind through the eye ~ Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
Fear Of Evil quotes by Ernest Agyemang Yeboah
For you seem ever to think only of its power in the hands of the Enemy: of its evil uses not of its good. The world is changing, you say. Minas ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Fear Of Evil quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
What's distinctively shocking about Machiavelli is that he didn't care. He believed not only that politicians must do evil in the name of the public good, but also that they shouldn't worry about it. He was unconcerned, in other words, with what modern thinkers call 'the problem of dirty hands.' ~ Michael Ignatieff
Fear Of Evil quotes by Michael Ignatieff

Long
Fear Of Evil quotes by Steven S. Long
Fear accompanies only the possibility of death. Calm ushers its certainty. ~ Scott McEwen
Fear Of Evil quotes by Scott McEwen
They were all listening to him with the curiosity and, if the truth were known, the utter indifference of practical people who had lost their fear of his God of wrath and chastisement. Why be frightened and deferential and seek pardon when the idea of the devil now merely made them laugh and they no longer believed in an avenging Lord who sent the wind and the hail and the thunder? It was just a waste of time; it was much more sensible to keep your respect for the forces of law and order: they were stronger. ~ Emile Zola
Fear Of Evil quotes by Emile Zola
Some men are so willing to know their future,
but unwilling to face the fear of their own death. ~ Toba Beta
Fear Of Evil quotes by Toba Beta
All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win is for enough good women to do nothing. ~ Kate Atkinson
Fear Of Evil quotes by Kate Atkinson
The judge punishes lawbreakers as a burning house injures its occupants. A person may be burned to death while robbing a home or saving a friend. Similarly, from a moral point of view, the judge's work is good or evil, depending on whether the laws he enforces are good or evil. ~ Thomas Szasz
Fear Of Evil quotes by Thomas Szasz
Sometimes it was better to not get what you wanted. Sometimes it was better to leave beautiful things alone for fear of breaking them. ~ Krystal Sutherland
Fear Of Evil quotes by Krystal Sutherland
Every triumph has to overcome the fear of tragedy. ~ Debasish Mridha
Fear Of Evil quotes by Debasish Mridha
Tradition is the living faith of dead people to which we must add our chapter while we have the gift of life. Traditionalism is the dead faith of living people who fear that if anything changes, the whole enterprise will crumble. ~ Jaroslav Pelikan
Fear Of Evil quotes by Jaroslav Pelikan
From Lee's extensive quotes of Edwards on page 152 we can gather that the reason some reject good thoughts that might order their minds aright is because of a disposition of the heart, or a "taste" for evil. The habit of a person's mind is in accordance with his spiritual appetite, a good man's mind will always suggest and supply good and holy thoughts to connect ideas and information to create a beautiful picture in one's mind of God's orderly universe (Himself at the helm) but the evil man's mind is habitually disorganizing the things of this world or rather dis-integrating them from the knowledge of God, and so Edwards might say that his mind is not a cosmos but a chaos, or a conductor-less cacophony rather than a grand symphony. ~ Erick John Blore
Fear Of Evil quotes by Erick John Blore
Failure is just another way to learn how to do something right. ~ Marian Wright Edelman
Fear Of Evil quotes by Marian Wright Edelman
Political liberty in a citizen is that tranquillity of spirit which comes from the opinion each one has of his security, and in order for him to have this liberty the government must be such that one citizen cannot fear another citizen. ~ Baron De Montesquieu
Fear Of Evil quotes by Baron De Montesquieu
A big fear of working with an actor that's never been a lead in a film before is that you're going to have to work really hard to pull a performance out of her. ~ Sean Durkin
Fear Of Evil quotes by Sean Durkin
When there is a problem in the world, we say "What are they going to do about it". At which point they, who have secretly created the problem in the first place, respond to this demand by introducing a 'solution' - more centralisation of power and erosion of freedom. If you want to give more powers to the police, security agencies and military, and you want the public to demand you do it, then ensure there is more crime, violence and terrorism, and then it's a cinch to achieve your aims. Once the people are in fear of being burgled, mugged or bombed, they will demand that you take their freedom away to protect them from what they have been manipulated to fear….Create the problem, encourage the reaction "something must be done", and then offer the solution. It is summed up by the Freemason motto 'Ordo Ab Chao' -order out of chaos. Create the chaos and then offer the way to restore order. Your order. The masses are herded and directed by many and various forms of emotional and mental control. ~ David Icke
Fear Of Evil quotes by David Icke
Ged said at last, speaking low, "There is a thing that I fear, Estarriol. I fear it more if you are with me when I go. There in the Hands in the dead end of the inlet I turned upon the shadow, it was within my hands' reach, and I seized it - I tried to seize it. And there was nothing I could hold. I could not defeat it. It fled, I followed. But that may happen again, and yet again. I have no power over the thing. There may be neither death nor triumph to end this quest; nothing to sing of; no end. It may be I must spend my life running from sea to sea and land to land on an endless vain venture, a shadow-quest. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Fear Of Evil quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
Rest forever, tired heart.
The final illusion has perished.
The one we believed eternal is gone.
Just like that. Out the door desire
follows hope. Rest forever.
Enough throbbing. Nothing deserves your attention
nor is the earth worth a sigh.
Bitterness and boredom is life,
nothing else ever, and the world is mud.
Quiet now. Despair for the last time.
Fate gives us dying as a gift.
Now turn from the hills, the ugly hidden power
which rules for the common evil
and the infinite vanity of it all. ~ Giacomo Leopardi
Fear Of Evil quotes by Giacomo Leopardi
I know what it's like to sleep in fear, to starve myself to be worthy, to be ashamed of my voice, to want to sleep forever. To question why I deserve to live. ~ Anna White
Fear Of Evil quotes by Anna White
Mankind without truth, without God-given morals...has strength...can think...can feel things emotionally–but if he isn't given a good, solid standard for right and wrong, then there's nothing to keep him from using strength and reason and feelings in selfish...even destructive ways...We wonder why people do such evil things, why there's so much violence in the world, why people rob and cheat and betray each other. But when we erase truth from our thinking and say there's no right or wrong except for what each person thinks is right or wrong, well, we get the world we deserve...when there's no truth that applies to everyone, then there's no way to argue for the rightness or wrongness of anything... ~ Frank E. Peretti
Fear Of Evil quotes by Frank E. Peretti
I don't write about good and evil with this enormous dichotomy. I write about people. I write about people doing the kinds of things that people do. ~ Octavia E. Butler
Fear Of Evil quotes by Octavia E. Butler
The people who accomplish the most astounding things for God's glory aren't the people who feel the least fear. Often they're the ones who deal with the most intense fear. But instead of letting that fear disable their dreams, they start increasing their capacity for faith. They act on the part of God's direction they do understand. And they leave the rest up to him. ~ Steven Furtick
Fear Of Evil quotes by Steven Furtick
Unjust laws exist; shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once? Men generally, under such a government as this, think that they ought to wait until they have persuaded the majority to alter them. They think that, if they should resist, the remedy would be worse than the evil. But it is the fault of the government itself that the remedy is worse than the evil. It makes it worse. Why is it not more apt to anticipate and provide for reform? Why does it not cherish its wise minority? Why does it cry and resist before it is hurt? Why does it not encourage its citizens to be on the alert to point out its faults, and do better than it would have them? ~ Henry David Thoreau
Fear Of Evil quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Virtually every version of CBT for anxiety disorders involves working through what's called an exposure hierarchy. The concept is simple. You make a list of all the situations and behaviors you avoid due to anxiety. You then assign a number to each item on your list based on how anxiety provoking you expect doing the avoided behavior would be. Use numbers from 0 (= not anxiety provoking at all) to 100 (= you would fear having an instant panic attack). For example, attempting to talk to a famous person in your field at a conference might be an 80 on the 0-100 scale.
Sort your list in order, from least to most anxiety provoking. Aim to construct a list that has several avoided actions in each 10-point range. For example, several that fall between 20 and 30, between 30 and 40, and so on, on your anxiety scale. That way, you won't have any jumps that are too big. Omit things that are anxiety-provoking but wouldn't actually benefit you (such as eating a fried insect).
Make a plan for how you can work through your hierarchy, starting at the bottom of the list. Where possible, repeat an avoided behavior several times before you move up to the next level. For example, if one of your items is talking to a colleague you find intimidating, do this several times (with the same or different colleagues) before moving on.
When you start doing things you'd usually avoid that are low on your hierarchy, you'll gain the confidence you need to do the things that are higher up on y ~ Alice Boyes
Fear Of Evil quotes by Alice Boyes
Buddha means awareness, the awareness of body and mind that prevents evil from arising in either. ~ Bodhidharma
Fear Of Evil quotes by Bodhidharma
All external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important." For ~ Jon Vroman
Fear Of Evil quotes by Jon Vroman
Every move we make in fear of the next war in fact hastens it. ~ Gregory Bateson
Fear Of Evil quotes by Gregory Bateson
As soon as men know that they can kill without fear of punishment or blame, they kill; or at least they encourage killers with approving smiles. ~ Simone Weil
Fear Of Evil quotes by Simone Weil
Fear has a lot of flavors and textures. There's a sharp, silver fear that runs like lightning through your arms and legs, galvanizes you into action, power, motion. There's heavy, leaden fear that comes in ingots, piling up in your belly during the empty hours between midnight and morning, when everything is dark, every problem grows larger, and every wound and illness grows worse. And there is coppery fear, drawn tight as the strings of a violin, quavering on one single note that cannot possibly be sustained for a single second longer - but goes on and on and on, the tension before the crash of cymbals, the brassy challenge of the horns, the threatening rumble of the kettle drums. That's the kind of fear I felt. Horrible, clutching tension that left the coppery flavor of blood on my tongue. Fear of the creatures in the darkness around me, of my own weakness, the stolen power the Nightmare had torn from me. And fear for those around me, for the folk who didn't have the power I had. ~ Jim Butcher
Fear Of Evil quotes by Jim Butcher
Evil must be attacked by ... the day to day assault of the battering rams of justice. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Fear Of Evil quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr.
I feel like the majority of the fear that I had or that we have we hold from other people. They're like people that we trust; they're their fears. All of a sudden we think that they're our fears. ~ Alicia Keys
Fear Of Evil quotes by Alicia Keys
All religions are founded on the fear of the many and the cleverness of the few. ~ Stendhal
Fear Of Evil quotes by Stendhal
Russell observes that "the merits of democracy are negative: it does not ensure good government, but it prevents certain evils," such as the evil of a small group of individuals achieving a secure monopoly on political power. The chief peril for the politician, Russell insists, is love of power. And politicians can easily yield to the love of power on the pretense that they are pursuing some absolute good. ~ Bertrand Russell
