Can we reasonably expect happiness from an insatiable appetite which, no matter how it stuffs its belly, is still psychologically like Oliver Twist in the poorhouse, holding up an empty bowl and begging, "I want some more"? Isn't it possible that our dream of the good society contained, from the beginning, a hidden violation of the Tenth Commandment "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods"? ~ Joy Davidman
Expect Happiness quotes by Joy Davidman
In his own life, then, a man is not to expect happiness, only to profit by it gladly when it shall arise; he is on duty here; he knows not how or why, and does not need to know; he knows not for what hire, and must not ask. Somehow or other, though he does not know what goodness is, he must try to be good; somehow or other, though he cannot tell what will do it, he must try to give happiness to others. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson
Expect Happiness quotes by Robert Louis Stevenson
The British do not expect happiness. I had the impression, all the time that I lived there, that they do not want to be happy; they want to be right. ~ Quentin Crisp
Expect Happiness quotes by Quentin Crisp
To expect happiness without giving up negative action is like holding your hand in a fire and hoping not to be burned. Of course, no one actually wants to suffer, to be sick, to be cold or hungry - but as long as we continue to indulge in wrong doing we will never put an end to suffering. Likewise, we will never achieve happiness, except through positive deeds, words, and thoughts. Positive action is something we have to cultivate ourselves; it can be neither bought nor stolen, and no one ever stumbles on it just by chance. ~ Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
Expect Happiness quotes by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
All history and art are against us, but we still expect happiness in love. ~ Mason Cooley
Expect Happiness quotes by Mason Cooley
Happy?" He stared her down. "You can't expect happiness. If it comes along - consider yourself lucky, but that's not what life's about. ~ Natalie Goldberg
Expect Happiness quotes by Natalie Goldberg
True expectations never ever go unnoticed. So expect happiness and expect abundance. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha
You see, nothing matters except pleasure - which is the opposite of happiness, its tragic part, I expect. ~ Lawrence Durrell
Expect Happiness quotes by Lawrence Durrell
Unhappiness is something we are never taught about; we are taught to expect happiness, but never a Plan B to use to use when the happiness doesn't arrive. ~ Douglas Coupland
Expect Happiness quotes by Douglas Coupland
Having worked so hard to have children, parents may feel it's only natural to expect happiness from the experience. And they'll find happiness of course, but not necessarily continuously, and not always in the forms they might expect. ~ Jennifer Senior
Expect Happiness quotes by Jennifer Senior
It is in the expectations of happiness that much of happiness itself is found. And it takes courage to expect happiness. ~ Earl Nightingale
Expect Happiness quotes by Earl Nightingale
fear of death is the amber of happiness ~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Expect Happiness quotes by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Focus on impact, not approval. If you believe you can change the world, which I hope you do, do what you believe is right and expect resistance and expect attackers. Keep calm and carry on! ~ Tim Ferriss
Expect Happiness quotes by Tim Ferriss
Feel the delights of love with the heart, not with the mind. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha
Happiness is a skill. It requires effort and time. ~ Andrew Weil
Expect Happiness quotes by Andrew Weil
A good friend loves you when the condition is better, a best friend holds your hand when you're in gutter. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha
There is another life both for you and for me,' said I. 'If it be the will of God that we should sow in tears now, it is only that we may reap in joy hereafter. It is His will that we should not injure others by the gratification of our own earthly passions; and you have a mother, and sisters, and friends who would be seriously injured by your disgrace; and I, too, have friends, whose peace of mind shall never be sacrificed to my enjoyment, or yours either, with my consent; and if I were alone in the world, I have still my God and my religion, and I would sooner die than disgrace my calling and break my faith with heaven to obtain a few brief years of false and fleeting happiness - happiness sure to end in misery even here - for myself or any other! ~ Anne Bronte
Expect Happiness quotes by Anne Bronte
In life, we always search outside for unimportant things and ignore the most important things, which are inside us. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha
To change your life, have a new thought and act on it, don't dwell in the past. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha

Expect Happiness quotes by Erik Larson

Expect Happiness quotes by Efrat Cybulkiewicz
Love does make everything beautiful.
Smile adds the charm to make it wonderful. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha
If you want to know why the human primate behaves the way it does, I can easily explain:

1. human life span
2. human physiology at each stage of life="hormones"
3. our current state of evolution (still primitive in many ways).

Humans are the only species on earth aware of their own deaths. They aren't here for long so they are very concerned with the quality of their lives more so than the quality of the lives that will come after them. It is our life spans that trap us, make us truly incapable of long-term decisions which would require sacrifice we as a species are not willing to make.

Hormones: at each life stage, we are influenced heavily by hormones-raging levels in the young male or not, descending in the middle aged man or woman. Hormones also influence our behavior.

Lastly, we are not out of the oven yet as far as evolution goes, still prone to settle our differences through primitive means--greed and violence.

Here is a thought question for you-how would things differ if the average human could expect to live 200 years instead of 70+-? ~ Virginia Arthur
Expect Happiness quotes by Virginia Arthur
My path is about Joy. ~ Esther Hicks
Expect Happiness quotes by Esther Hicks
Southerners. Such literate, civilized folk, such charm and cleverness and passion for living, such genuine interest in people, all people, high and low, white and black, and yet how often it had come to, came to, was still coming to vicious incomprehension, usually over race but other things too - religion, class, money. How often the lowest elements had burst out of the shadows and hollers, guns and torches blazing, galloping past the educated and tolerant as nightriders, how often the despicable had run riot over the better Christian ideals... how often cities had burned, people had been strung up in trees, atrocities had been permitted to occur and then, in the seeking of justice for those outrages, how slippery justice had proven, how delayed its triumph. Oh you expect such easily obtained violence in the Balkans or among Asian or African tribal peoples centuries-deep in blood feuds, but how was there such brutality and wickedness in this place of church and good intention, a place of immense friendliness and charity and fondness for the rituals of family and socializing, amid the nation's best cooking and best music... how could one place contain the other place? ~ Wilton Barnhardt
Expect Happiness quotes by Wilton Barnhardt
No man who has once heartily and wholly laughed can be altogether irreclaimably bad. ~ Thomas Carlyle
Expect Happiness quotes by Thomas Carlyle
What I like about cooking is that, so long as you follow the recipe exactly, everything always turns out perfect. It's too bad there's no recipe for happiness. Happiness is more like pastry - which is to say that you can take pains to keep cool and not overwork the dough, but if you don't have that certain light touch, your best efforts still fall flat.
The work-around is to buy what you need. I'm talking about pastry, not happiness, although money does make things easier all around. ~ Josh Lanyon
Expect Happiness quotes by Josh Lanyon
What if I die of happiness and then go right to hell? ~ J.C. Lillis
Expect Happiness quotes by J.C. Lillis
What weeping adds quietly to your life. Happiness can't even have idea of it. ~ Lovely Goyal
Expect Happiness quotes by Lovely Goyal
I was maybe 19 years old. And I always remember that it was a great feeling of happiness. Because of that, I said to Myles that it's no different for me if I am reading poetry or if I am reading Marx. I try to get the beauty in the very act of reading, you see. This is for me something that many times teachers don't try to do. ~ Paulo Freire
Expect Happiness quotes by Paulo Freire
I have never worked for fame or praise, and shall not feel their loss as I otherwise would. I have never for a moment lost sight of the humble life I was born to, its small environments, and the consequently little right I had to expect much of myself, and shall have the less to censure, or upbraid myself with for the failures I must see myself make. ~ Clara Barton
Expect Happiness quotes by Clara Barton
One can expect an agreement between philosophers sooner than between clocks. ~ Seneca.
Expect Happiness quotes by Seneca.
Moses

Come.
When?
Now. This way. I will guide you.
Wait! Not so fast.
Hurry. You. I said you.
Who am I?
Certainly I will be with thee.
Is nothing, then, what it is? I had rather the rod had
stayed a rod and not become a serpent.
Come. Quickly. While the blast of my breath opens the sea.
Stop. I'm thirsty.
Drink water from this rock.
But the rock moves on before us.
Go with it and drink.
I'm tired. Can't you stop for a while?
You have already tarried too long.
But if I am to follow you I must know your name.
I will be that I will be.
You have set the mountain on fire.
Come. Climb.
I will be lost in the terror of your cloud.
You are stiff-necked and of a stiff-necked people.
YOUR poeple, Lord,
Indubitably.
Your wrath waxes hot. I burn.
Thus to become great.
Show me, then, they glory.
No man may see my face and live. But I will cover you with my hand while I pass by.
My people turn away and cry because the skin of my
face shines
Did you not expect this?
I cannot enter the tent of the congregation while your
cloud covers it and your glory fills the tabernacle.
Look. It moves before us again. Can you not stay still?
Come. Follow.
But this river is death. The waters are dark and deep.
Swim.
Now will I see your face? Where are you taking me
now?
Up the mo ~ Madeleine L'Engle
Expect Happiness quotes by Madeleine L'Engle
Of Woman and Chocolate

"Chocolate shares both the bitter and the sweet.

Chocolate melts away all cares, coating the heart while smothering every last ache.

Chocolate brings a smile to the lips on contact, leaving a dark kiss behind.

Chocolate is amiable, complimenting any pairing; berries, peanut butter, pretzels, mint, pastries, drinks...everything goes with chocolate.

The very thought of chocolate awakens taste buds, sparking memories of candy-coated happiness.

Chocolate will go nuts with you, no questions asked.

Chocolate craves your lips, melts at your touch, and savors the moment.

Chocolate is that dark and beautiful knight who charges in on his gallant steed ready to slay dragons when needed.

Chocolate never disappoints; it leaves its lover wanting more.

Chocolate is the ultimate satisfaction, synonymous with perfection.

Chocolate is rich, smooth pleasure.

Chocolate has finesse - the charm to seduce and indulge at any time, day or night.

Chocolate is a true friend, a trusted confidant, and faithful lover.

Chocolate warms and comforts and sympathizes.

Chocolate holds power over depression, victory over disappointment.

Chocolate savvies the needs of a woman and owns her.

Simply put, chocolate is paradise. ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
Expect Happiness quotes by Richelle E. Goodrich
Sensuality does not wear a watch but she always gets to the essential places on time. She is adventurous and not particularly quiet. She was reprimanded in grade school because she couldn't sit still all day long. She needs to move. She thinks with her body. Even when she goes to the library to read Emily Dickinson or Emily Bronte, she starts reading out loud and swaying with the words, and before she can figure out what is happening, she is asked to leave. As you might expect, she is a disaster at office jobs.

Sensuality has exquisite skin and she appreciates it in others as well. There are other people whose skin is soft and clear and healthy but something about Sensuality's skin announces that she is alive. When the sun bursts forth in May, Sensuality likes to take off her shirt and feel the sweet warmth of the sun's rays brush across her shoulder. This is not intended as a provocative gesture but other people are, as usual, upset. Sensuality does not understand why everyone else is so disturbed by her. As a young girl, she was often scolded for going barefoot.

Sensuality likes to make love at the border where time and space change places. When she is considering a potential lover, she takes him to the ocean and watches. Does he dance with the waves? Does he tell her about the time he slept on the beach when he was seventeen and woke up in the middle of the night to look at the moon? Does he laugh and cry and notice how big the sky is?

It i ~ J. Ruth Gendler
Expect Happiness quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Happiness isn't a thing. You can't go out and get it like a cup of tea. It's the way you feel about things. ~ Diana Wynne Jones
Expect Happiness quotes by Diana Wynne Jones
The happier person is one, that acknowledges and accepts life won't get any better than this. ~ Anthony Liccione
Expect Happiness quotes by Anthony Liccione
Happiness is not a destination: Being happy takes constant weeding, a tending of emotions and circumstances as they arise. There's no happily ever after, or any one person or place that can bring happiness. It takes work to be calm in the midst of turmoil. But releasing the need to control it - well, that's a start. ~ Sasha Martin
Expect Happiness quotes by Sasha Martin
Justice of the world is in its creativity, in solving problems, in our activity and struggle. While I am alive there is the possibility to act, to strive for happiness, this is justice. ~ Simon Soloveychik
Expect Happiness quotes by Simon Soloveychik
When nobody loves you, love yourself. ~ Debasish Mridha
Expect Happiness quotes by Debasish Mridha
Peculiar or not, it is my idea of pleasure. Why, why else do you lead this life you don't enjoy it? Don't talk of duty to me; you men always have some high-sounding excuse for indulging yourselves. You go gallivanting over the earth, climbing mountains, looking for the sources of the Nile; and expect women to sit dully at home embroidering. I embroider very badly. I think I would excavate rather well. ~ Elizabeth Peters
Expect Happiness quotes by Elizabeth Peters
Climb greater heights to obtain a new perspective. ~ Truth Devour
Expect Happiness quotes by Truth Devour
We are pattern seekers, believers in a coherent world, in which regularities appear not by accident but as a result of mechanical causality or of someone´s intention. We do not expect to see regularity produced by a random process, and when we detect what appears to be a rule, we quickly reject the idea that the process is truly random. Random processes produce many sequences that convince people that the process is not random after all. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Expect Happiness quotes by Daniel Kahneman
God expects from man a responsible attitude towards his given task ~ Sunday Adelaja
Expect Happiness quotes by Sunday Adelaja
The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings. ~ Masanobu Fukuoka
Expect Happiness quotes by Masanobu Fukuoka
It is in the pursuit of a goal that happiness is found. Achievement is shortlived compared to the satisfaction found in knowing that you have consistently worked towards your goals. Dream big, work hard and find even bigger dreams to pursue. ~ Avina Celeste
Expect Happiness quotes by Avina Celeste
I'm living a dream I never want to wake up from. ~ Cristiano Ronaldo
