Fear has a large shadow, but he himself is small. ~ J. Ruth Gendler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
The bones of the skeleton which support the body can become the bars of the cage which imprison the spirit. ~ J. Ruth Gendler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Sensuality does not wear a watch but she always gets to the essential places on time. She is adventurous and not particularly quiet. She was reprimanded in grade school because she couldn't sit still all day long. She needs to move. She thinks with her body. Even when she goes to the library to read Emily Dickinson or Emily Bronte, she starts reading out loud and swaying with the words, and before she can figure out what is happening, she is asked to leave. As you might expect, she is a disaster at office jobs.

Sensuality has exquisite skin and she appreciates it in others as well. There are other people whose skin is soft and clear and healthy but something about Sensuality's skin announces that she is alive. When the sun bursts forth in May, Sensuality likes to take off her shirt and feel the sweet warmth of the sun's rays brush across her shoulder. This is not intended as a provocative gesture but other people are, as usual, upset. Sensuality does not understand why everyone else is so disturbed by her. As a young girl, she was often scolded for going barefoot.

Sensuality likes to make love at the border where time and space change places. When she is considering a potential lover, she takes him to the ocean and watches. Does he dance with the waves? Does he tell her about the time he slept on the beach when he was seventeen and woke up in the middle of the night to look at the moon? Does he laugh and cry and notice how big the sky is?

J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Courage looks you straight in the eye. She is not impressed with power trippers, and she knows first aid. Courage is not afraid to weep, and she is not afraid to pray, even when she is not sure who she is praying to. When she walks it is clear she has made the journey from loneliness to solitude. The people who told me she was stern were not lying. they just forgot to mention she was kind. ~ J. Ruth Gendler

J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Beauty is startling. She wears a gold shawl in the summer and sells seven kinds of honey at the flea market. She is young and old at once, my daughter and my grandmother. In school she excelled in mathematics and poetry ... Beauty will dance with anyone who is brave enough to ask her. ~ J. Ruth Gendler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Compassion speaks with a slight accent. She was a vulnerable child, miserable in school, cold, shy ... In ninth grade she was befriended by Courage. Courage lent Compassion bright sweaters, explained the slang, showed her how to play volleyball. ~ J. Ruth Gendler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Pain is subtle. He has cold grey fingers. His voice is horse from crying & screaming ... When people try to avoid him, he follows them silently & turns upas the bartender, or the bus driver ... Pain has an elaborate filing system for keeping track of everyone ... Pain respects people who are willing to take risks. If you ... face him directly, he will give you a special ointment so your wounds don't fester. ~ J. Ruth Gendler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
Pleasure is wild and sweet. She likes purple flowers. She loves the sun and the wind and the night sky. She carries a silver bowl full of liquid moonlight. She has a cat named Midnight with stars on his paws. Many people mistrust Pleasure, and even more misunderstand her. For a long time I could barely stand to be in ... the same room with her ... ~ J. Ruth Gendler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Ruth Gendler
If you are wondering why the planet is getting bigger, I'm sure it's going to hit you any second." - Ruth Valencia ~ J. Stone
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J. Stone
If I can give a very substantial injection of humanistic thinking into corporations, boy, that would change things a lot. ~ Ruth J. Simmons
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth J. Simmons
Basketball's eras are defined by teams - Celtics, Lakers, Bulls - and baseball's epochs are defined by players - Ruth, Robinson, Mantle - but with football, it's the sideline strategists, the nutty professors and top coated Lears. ~ J.R. Moehringer
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J.R. Moehringer
One form of insecurity of attachment, called "disorganized/disoriented", has been associated with marked impairments in the emotional, social, and cognitive domains, and a predisposition toward a clinical condition known as dissociation in which the capacity to function in an organized, coherent manner is at times impaired.

Studies have also found that youths with a history of disorganized attachments are at great risk of expressing hostility with their peers and have the potential for interpersonal violence as they mature (Lyons-Ruth & Jacobwitz, 1999; Carlson, 1998). This disorganized form of attachment has been proposed to be associated with the caregiver's frightened, frightening, or disoriented behavior with the child. Such experiences create a state of alarm in the child. The parents of these children often have an autobiographical narrative finding, as revealed in the Adult Attachment Interview, of unresolved trauma or grief that appears as a disorientation in their narrative account of their childhoods. Such linguistic disorientation occurs during the discussion of loss or threat from childhood experiences. Lack of resolution appears to be associated with parental behaviors that are incompatible with an organized adaptation on the part of the child. Lack of resolution of trauma or grief in a parent can lead to parental behaviors that create "paradoxical", unsolvable, and problematic situations for the child. The attachment figure is intended to be the s ~ Daniel J. Siegel, M.D.
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D.
I'm the youngest of 12 children. And although I was the youngest, I tried to organize things in my family. When there were disputes, I tried to mediate. ~ Ruth J. Simmons
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth J. Simmons
Oh kid, it's all about confidence. That's the whole shebang right there. Whatever you do, do it with your nuts. That's how Ruth swung a bat-with his nuts. Court a girl, rob a bank, brush your teeth, do it with and from your God-given nuts or don't do it at all. ~ J.R. Moehringer
J Ruth Gendler quotes by J.R. Moehringer
The prediction of false rape-related beliefs (rape myth acceptance [RMA]) was examined using the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (Payne, Lonsway, & Fitzgerald, 1999) among a nonclinical sample of 258 male and female college students. Predictor variables included measures of attitudes toward women, gender role identity (GRI), sexual trauma history, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. Using linear regression and testing interaction effects, negative attitudes toward women significantly predicted greater RMA for individuals without a sexual trauma history.
However, neither attitudes toward women nor GRI were significant predictors of RMA for individuals with a sexual trauma history."

J Ruth Gendler quotes by Shannon N. Baugher
I'm prepared to fight as hard as I can against unions entering the University on behalf of our students. ~ Ruth J. Simmons
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth J. Simmons
The committee's work is not about whether or how we should pay reparations. That was never the intent nor will the payment of reparations be the outcome. This is an effort designed to involve the campus community in a discovery of the meaning of our past. ~ Ruth J. Simmons
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth J. Simmons
Where in the Bible does the young woman initiate a marriage?' Nobody asked bitterly.

'Ahem, well, now that you mention it, in the book of Ruth. ~ John J. Horn
J Ruth Gendler quotes by John J. Horn
I often say that shareholders should feel very responsible for how responsive corporations are to the public trust. ~ Ruth J. Simmons
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth J. Simmons
My high school years were fun and frustrating, typical of the teen years. The most important accomplishment was meeting my wife, Ruth. ~ Alan J. Heeger
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Alan J. Heeger
Do you think there are bears?" whispered Linda, glancing at the black shore and jagged trees.
"Perhaps," said Philip. If it frightened her, he thought fiercely, so much the better. ~ Ruth Nichols
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Nichols
But how can an ordinary girl not know this? Had Varana's mother not bothered to teach her anything at all or just shouted complaints from a distance while her children fought and argued amongst themselves like wolf cubs? ~ Ruth Downie
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Downie
Don't cry Meg. It's not that bad."

"It's not that bad? Ha! I'm thirty years old, with two black eyes, a swollen nose, a big, honking, yellow knot on my forehead, and the haircut from hell. As if that isn't enough, I had a transvestite in my bed this morning, my husband is a lying, cheating, cradle robbing, bastard, who at some point slept with my best friend."

Jack scooted over to the middle of the seat, and stopped listening to his head and wrapped his arms around her. Big mistake! From inside, four faces were pressed to the window.

"My last orgasm-with a partner- was…hell I can't remember when! I frequently knock myself out for entertainment purposes, I have little boobs, big feet, squishy panties, nosy neighbors and demon possessed fish. God hates me!"

Jack held her tighter.

"I have frequent flyer miles at the hospital. I fed my husband marijuana Ex-lax brownies and shoved a marble up his butt."

Jack pulled away to look at her and she was serious. And crying. Big, sad, alligator tears that made his heart swell. "My mother is a holy rolling, Catholic Dr. Ruth, complete with condoms and Rosary beads. I write about relationships and sex, both of which I suck at and I hired a Private Investigator to pimp me out."

Jack burst out laughing and she pushed him away and swatted his shoulder.

"And now you're laughing at me. Could things get any worse? ~ Amy Johnson
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Amy Johnson
sealing the pores were undertaken, famously with a horse. The poor animal was carefully varnished all over with several layers of shellac (the same solution that is used to varnish furniture) to ensure a complete seal, and died within hours. It was assumed that it had asphyxiated, thus 'proving' that the skin played an important role in respiration as well as perspiration. ~ Ruth Goodman
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Goodman
That's the way the cookie crumbles and the biscotti sops. ~ Ruth Wedes
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Wedes
Look, my son, she is so beautiful, she has fair skin and green eyes and brown hair.'

'She's English?' I asked cheekily, holding the cheap photo print with trepidation.

Which unfortunate victim had they found for me to marry in what backwater, unbeknownst that my heart was not for trading? Honour would quote Shakespeare to make a point; for me, it was always Rumi.

'La hawla wala kuwwat... May God protect us from such misfortune... you think I have lost my senses that I would marry you to a white girl?' My mum used the word gori as an insult and yet when she talked about Billo she said 'Look how gori she is.'

Oh, Mum, the irony.

'Well, you seem pretty obsessed with green eyes and skin colour,' I mumbled.

'She is gorgeous.' Mum went on ignoring me. 'Think how beautiful your children, my grandchildren, will be? They will have cats' eyes, just like Billo.'

Honour has fair skin and green eyes too, and just think how beautiful your grandchildren will be if they're mixed race, I thought.

I didn't say that to my mum, obviously. ~ Ruth Ahmed
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Ahmed
It's the same with the ballplayers. Babe Ruth spent a lot, too and the ballplayers make a lot more money now. ~ Mickey Gilley
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Mickey Gilley
Written with grace and thoroughly researched, One People, One Blood is an ethnography with a lot of heart that also sheds new light on a fascinating and fraught chapter in recent Jewish history. ~ Ruth Behar
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Behar
I couldn't help but think of Al's pre-ordained betrothal to Billo and of how hard the match-makers had worked to find the girl beautiful enough to match this extraordinary man - this extraordinary man of mine. ~ Ruth Ahmed
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Ahmed
Every cat knows some things need to be buried. ~ Ruth Graham
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Graham
She loved nothing in the world except this woman's son, wanted him alive more than anybody, but hadn't the least bit of control over the predator that lived inside her. Totally taken over by her anaconda love, she had no self left, no fears, no wants, no intelligence that was her own [ ... ] Ruth heard the supplication in her words and it seemed to her that she was not looking at a person but at an impulse, a cell, a red corpuscle that neither knows nor understands why it is driven to spend its whole life in one pursuit: swimming up a dark tunnel toward the muscle of a heart or an eye's nerve end that it both nourished and fed from. ~ Toni Morrison
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Toni Morrison
I don't give a shit about pretty," I informed her. "I'm a superhero. Superheroes don't need pretty. ~ Ruth Ozeki
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Ozeki
I was terrified. No matter how far I fell, something pulled me back to safety - school and its occasional fascinating gift, dopey, well-meaning men, and books, books, that's where I found her most often, in the intimacies of characters, Ruth and Sylvie in a towboat, Esperanza on Mango Street, Anna K., of course, right before she jumps. ~ Julie Buntin
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Julie Buntin
Sparrows and pigeons and a blackbird were celebrating the morning in the courtyard. ~ Ruth Downie
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Downie
I look at ordinary objects, and I see things that other people don't see. That's why I'm a photographer. ~ Ruth Bernhard
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Bernhard
Death is certain. Life is always changing, like a puff of wind in the air, or a wave in the sea, or even a thought in the mind. ~ Ruth Ozeki
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Ozeki
My stories may seem to be the stories of men, but a check of my books will show that I have probably written the stories of more strong women than any other writer ... [examples include] Miss Nesselrode of The Lonesome Gods, Ruth Macken of Bendigo Shafter, Echo Sackett of Ride the River, Em Talon of Ride the Dark Trail are some ... [and] one of my favorites is Miss Jessica Trescott of Matagorda. (The Sackett Companion) ~ Louis L'Amour
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Louis L'Amour
I go to the House of Lords in the afternoon and try to walk halfway. I may be thinking about what I'm going to write. It's much more satisfying than sitting in a chair. ~ Ruth Rendell
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Rendell
If only the court had acted more slowly,' RBG said, and cut down one state law at a time the way she had gotten them to do with the jury and benefit cases. The justices could have been persuaded to build an architecture of women's equality that could house reproductive freedom. She said the very boldness of Roe, striking down all abortion bans until viability, had 'halted a political process that was moving in a reform direction and thereby, I believe, prolonged divisiveness and deferred stable settlement of the issue. (85). ~ Irin Carmon
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Irin Carmon
Cleaning isn't all that interesting to me. I'm disorganized. ~ Ruth Wilson
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Wilson
She was happiest when sitting about and reading. She had read thousands of books, seeing no point in doing anything else unless you had to. ~ Ruth Rendell
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Rendell
But Ruth has not read all the letters I've written to her. She couldn't. Though I wrote them for her, I also wrote them for me, after all, and after she passed away, I placed another box beside the original. In this box are letters written with a shaking hand, letters marked only by my tears, not hers. They are letters written on what would have been yet another anniversary. Sometimes I think about reading them, just as she used to, but it hurts me to think that she never had the chance. ~ Nicholas Sparks
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
Drawing my thoughts out of my mind and holding me down to earth at the same time. ~ Ruth Ozeki
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Ozeki
There's no good in moping girl, there's work to be done... Have you forgotten, nobody likes a person who feels sorry for herself. ~ Ruth Downie
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Downie
I thought the Barbie doll would always be successful. ~ Ruth Handler
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Handler
It takes years for the moth to evolve from an egg into an adult," he said. "In its final stage the caterpillar spins a cocoon and then it dissolves completely until it's just liquid, then it transforms. It becomes something else entirely. A huge emperor moth. But it's not that easy. Before it can live as a moth it has to fight it's way out of the cocoon. Not all make it."
"They would if I was there," said Ruth, taking another gulp.
Gabriel was uncharacteristically silent.
"What? What is it?" demanded Ruth.
"They need to fight their way out of the cocoon. It builds their wings and muscles. It's the struggle that saves them. Without it they're crippled. If you help an emperor moth, you kill it. ~ Louise Penny
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Louise Penny
I don't judge people. I don't think we should/ ~ Ruth Rendell
J Ruth Gendler quotes by Ruth Rendell
