Are you sorry it happened?" Her fingers clenched as she waited tensely for his answer.
"Good Lord, no." He brought her small fist to his mouth and kissed it open, and flattened her palm against the side of his face. "It's what I've wanted most in my entire life. And the one thing I knew I could never have. I'm surprised. Shocked, even. But never sorry."
Daisy turned and snuggled against him, sandwiching one of his thighs between her own.
The rain beat out a brisk song against the side of the house, some of it coming through the window. Considering the idea of getting out of bed, Daisy shivered a little, and felt Matthew draw the covers higher over her bare shoulder.
"Daisy," he asked without heat, "where is the damn key?"
"I put it in your coat pocket," she said helpfully. "Didn't you see? No?…well, I suppose you were distracted at the time." She trailed her hand over his chest, letting her palm graze the point of his nipple. "You're probably angry with me for locking us in the bedroom."
"Enraged," he agreed. "I insist you do it every night after we're married."
"Are we going to get married?" Daisy whispered, raising her head.
His eyes were warm, but there was no hint of pleasure in his voice. "Yes, we're going to marry. Although you'll probably hate me for it someday."
"Why in the world would I…oh." Daisy remembered what he had told her about the likelihood of his past catching up to him someday. "I could never hate you," ~ Lisa Kleypas
Exasperating Men quotes by Lisa Kleypas
...and I wonder if my lineage is one of women shrinking, making space for the entrance of men into their lives, not knowing how to fill it back up once they leave. I have been taught accommodation. ~ Lily Myers
Exasperating Men quotes by Lily Myers
God wants his glory to shine through men. God wants his Kingdom to be made visible through them. ~ Mark Driscoll
Exasperating Men quotes by Mark Driscoll
A sprawling North London parkland, composed of oaks, willows and chestnuts, yews and sycamores, the beech and the birch; that encompasses the city's highest point and spreads far beyond it; that is so well planted it feels unplanned; that is not the country but is no more a garden than Yellowstone; that has a shade of green for every possible felicitation of light; that paints itself in russets and ambers in autumn, canary-yellow in the splashy spring; with tickling bush grass to hide teenage lovers and joint smokers, broad oaks for brave men to kiss against, mown meadows for summer ball games, hills for kites, ponds for hippies, an icy lido for old men with strong constitutions, mean llamas for mean children and, for the tourists, a country house, its façade painted white enough for any Hollywood close-up, complete with a tea room, although anything you buy there should be eaten outside with the grass beneath your toes, sitting under the magnolia tree, letting the white blossoms, blush-pink at their tips, fall all around you. Hampstead Heath! Glory of London! Where Keats walked and Jarman fucked, where Orwell exercised his weakened lungs and Constable never failed to find something holy. ~ Zadie Smith
Exasperating Men quotes by Zadie Smith
Oh! What honour for the female sex! It is perfectly obvious that God has special regard for it when all these wretched people who destroyed the whole Kingdom – now recovered and made safe by a woman, something that 5000 men could not have done – and the traitors [have been] exterminated. Before the event they would scarcely have believed this possible. ~ Christine De Pizan
Exasperating Men quotes by Christine De Pizan
Man was mark'd
A friend in his creation to himself,
And may, with fit ambition, conceive
The greatest blessings, and the highest honors
Appointed for him, if he can achieve them
The right and noble way. ~ Philip Massinger
Exasperating Men quotes by Philip Massinger
Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma. ~ L. Frank Baum
Exasperating Men quotes by L. Frank Baum
Be confident. There is no one who is not attracted to confidence. Women dig it. Men love it. Confidence adds hair, drops ten pounds, and takes off ten years. ~ Larry Winget
Exasperating Men quotes by Larry Winget
Nothing is so important to man as his own state; nothing is so formidable to him as eternity. And thus it is unnatural that thereshould be men indifferent to the loss of their existence and to the perils of everlasting suffering. ~ Blaise Pascal
Exasperating Men quotes by Blaise Pascal
War is then not a relationship between one man and another, but a relationship between one State and another, in which individuals are enemies only by accident, not as men, nor even as citizens, but as soldiers; not as members of the fatherland, but as its defenders. Finally, any State can only have other States, and not men, as enemies, inasmuch as it is impossible to fix a true relation between things of different natures. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Exasperating Men quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
The true test of a man's style is the haircut. There are some men who look good no matter how their hair is styled, whether it's trendy or not. A man can change his haircut many times, but to pull off any haircut, you have to be very chic. Like Brad Pitt. ~ Carine Roitfeld
Exasperating Men quotes by Carine Roitfeld
Men wanted me. They all did, however briefly, but none of them wanted to keep me. That's what I needed. I needed to be owned, loved. BUT NOT BY A MAN. I knew then that I never needed to be kept by a man. What I needed was to love myself, to want to keep myself around. And in that revelation, I knew that if I wanted to keep myself, that a man wanting to keep me would just be a by-product. ~ Fisher Amelie
Exasperating Men quotes by Fisher Amelie
All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Exasperating Men quotes by Henry David Thoreau
When one married a man, it was clear to me, one married also the sink and the stove ... ~ Phyllis Bentley
Exasperating Men quotes by Phyllis Bentley
A revolution is bloody, but America is in a unique position. She's the only country in history in a position actually to become involved in a bloodless revolution. The Russian revolution was bloody, Chinese revolution was bloody, French revolution was bloody, Cuban revolution was bloody, and there was nothing more bloody then the American Revolution. But today this country can become involved in a revolution that won't take bloodshed. All she's got to do is give the black man in this country everything that's due him, everything. ~ Malcolm X
Exasperating Men quotes by Malcolm X
It was love, she thought, love that never clutch its object; but, like the love which mathematicians bear their symbols, or poets their phrases, was meant to be spread over the world and become part of human gain. The world by all means should have shared it, could Mr Bankes have said why that woman pleased him so; why the sight of her reading a fairy tale to her boy had upon him precisely the same effect as the solution of a scientific problem. ~ Virginia Woolf
Exasperating Men quotes by Virginia Woolf
Man can certainly keep on lying (and does so), but he cannot make truth falsehood. ~ Karl Barth
Exasperating Men quotes by Karl Barth
With savages, the weak in body or mind are soon eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit a vigorous state of health. We civilised men, on the other hand, do our utmost to check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, the maimed, and the sick; we institute poor-laws; and our medical men exert their utmost skill to save the life of every one to the last moment. There is reason to believe that vaccination has preserved thousands, who from a weak constitution would formerly have succumbed to small-pox. Thus the weak members of civilised societies propagate their kind. No one who has attended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must be highly injurious to the race of man. It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man himself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed.

The aid which we feel impelled to give to the helpless is mainly an incidental result of the instinct of sympathy, which was originally acquired as part of the social instincts, but subsequently rendered, in the manner previously indicated, more tender and more widely diffused. Nor could we check our sympathy, if so urged by hard reason, without deterioration in the noblest part of our nature. The surgeon may harden himself whilst performing an operation, for he knows that he is acting for the good of his patient; but if we we ~ Charles Darwin
Exasperating Men quotes by Charles Darwin
Nothing has ever been more insupportable for a man and a human society than freedom.
–The Grand Inquisitor ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Exasperating Men quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
You like music, Mr. Gurgeh?" Hamin asked, leaning over to the man. Gurgeh nodded. "Well, a little does no harm. ~ Iain Banks
Exasperating Men quotes by Iain Banks
For many years, I picked the wrong men, or they picked me. I think if you don't feel attractive or worth something as a woman, you attract men who don't really look after you. That's what happened to me, but I realise that those relationships were like a journey, helping me to learn something about myself. ~ Lesley Nicol
Exasperating Men quotes by Lesley Nicol
Criminality was so widespread that its practitioners split into fields of specialization. Some became coney catchers, or swindlers (a coney was a rabbit reared for the table and thus unsuspectingly tame); others became foists (pickpockets), nips, or nippers (cutpurses), hookers (who snatched desirables through open windows with hooks), abtams (who feigned lunacy to provide a distraction), whipjacks, fingerers, cross biters, cozeners, courtesy men, and many more. Brawls were shockingly common. ~ Bill Bryson
Exasperating Men quotes by Bill Bryson
Even the wisest of mankind cannot live by reason alone; pure arrogant reason, denying the claims of prejudice (which commonly are also the claims of conscience), leads to a wasteland of withered hopes and crying loneliness, empty of God and man: the wilderness in which Satan tempted Christ was not more dreadful than the arid expanse of intellectual vanity deprived of tradition and intuition, where modern man is tempted by his own pride. ~ Russell Kirk
Exasperating Men quotes by Russell Kirk
There is also a beast, a beast of strange dimensions. He has the head of a horse and the body of a man who needs a lot of attention. He represents me in college: I was a dork-ataur. ~ Demetri Martin
Exasperating Men quotes by Demetri Martin
Man's moral nature is a riddle which only eternity can solve. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Exasperating Men quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Anytime you get men in glitter, it's a flamboyant occasion! ~ Johnny Weir
Exasperating Men quotes by Johnny Weir
A man knows his companion in a long journey and a little inn. ~ William Hazlitt
Exasperating Men quotes by William Hazlitt
There are other things besides beauty with which to captivate the hearts of men. The Italians have a saying: Fair is not fair, but that which pleaseth. ~ Ninon De L'Enclos
Exasperating Men quotes by Ninon De L'Enclos
But every time there have been conquests there have been conquerors; every time there has been a revolution in any state there have been great men, ~ Leo Tolstoy
Exasperating Men quotes by Leo Tolstoy
The good news is that I believe every woman who wants to can find a great partner. You're just going to need to get rid of the idea that marriage will make you happy. It won't. Once the initial high wears off, you'll just be you, except with twice as much laundry.
Because ultimately, marriage is not about getting something
it's about giving it. Strangely, men understand this more than we do. Probably because for them marriage involves sacrificing their most treasured possession
a free-agent penis
and for us, it's the culmination of a princess fantasy so universal, it built Disneyland. ~ Tracy McMillan
Exasperating Men quotes by Tracy McMillan
We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, "Oh, nothing!" Pride helps; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our hurts - not to hurt others. ~ George Eliot
Exasperating Men quotes by George Eliot
Sometimes I think that all mankind exist but to be bought and sold: The rich man's paramour is gold, the poor man's goddess, gold, gold, gold. ~ Ridgely Torrence
Exasperating Men quotes by Ridgely Torrence
Men lose their tempers in defending their taste. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Exasperating Men quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
I was always an early riser. Happy the man who is! Every morning day comes to him with a virgin's love, full of bloom and freshness. The youth of nature is contagious, like the gladness of a happy child. ~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton
Exasperating Men quotes by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton
I am quite ready to acknowledge ... that I ought to be grieved at death, if I were not persuaded that I am going to other gods who are wise and good (of this I am as certain as I can be of any such matters), and to men departed who are better than those whom I leave behind. And therefore I do not grieve as I might have done, for I have good hope that there is yet something remaining for the dead. ~ Socrates
Exasperating Men quotes by Socrates
Other men condemned to exile and captivity, if they survive, despair; the man of letters may reckon those days as the sweetest of his life ~ Benjamin Disraeli
Exasperating Men quotes by Benjamin Disraeli
Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you anymore. ~ Lady Gaga
Exasperating Men quotes by Lady Gaga
I hold doors open for all the women. Men can open the doors for themselves. ~ LeRoy Neiman
Exasperating Men quotes by LeRoy Neiman
The cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy. It is the only dictator that free man acknowledges. It is the only security that free man desires. ~ Mirabeau B. Lamar
Exasperating Men quotes by Mirabeau B. Lamar
It is not alone that justice is wounded by denying women a part in the making of the civilized world - a more immediate wrong is the way the movement for a fuller, freer life for all human beings is hampered. ~ Ida Tarbell
Exasperating Men quotes by Ida Tarbell
We are afraid of what we will do to others, afraid of the rage that lies in wait somewhere deep in our souls. How many human beings go through the world frozen with rage against life! This deeply hidden inner anger may be the product of hurt pride or of real frustration in office, factory, clinic, or home. Whatever may be the cause of our frozen rage (which is the inevitable mother of depression), the great word of hope today is that this rage can be conquered and drained off into creative channels …
…What should we do? We should all learn that a certain amount of aggressive energy is normal and certainly manageable in maturity. Most of us can drain off the excess of our angry feelings and destructive impulses in exercise, in competitive games, or in the vigorous battles against the evils of nature and society. We also must realize that no one will punish us for the legitimate expression of self-assertiveness and creative pugnacity as our parents once punished us for our undisciplined temper tantrums. Furthermore, let us remember that we need not totally repress the angry part of our nature. We can always give it an outlet in the safe realm of fantasy. A classic example of such fantasy is given by Max Beerborn, who made a practice of concocting imaginary letters to people he hated. Sometimes he went so far as to actually write the letters and in the very process of releasing his anger it evaporated.
As mature men and women we should regard our minds as a true democ ~ Joshua Loth Liebman
Exasperating Men quotes by Joshua Loth Liebman
We do as much, we eat as much, we want as much. ~ Sojourner Truth
Exasperating Men quotes by Sojourner Truth
We're moving into sudden history now, baby. That life men lead and women disavow, that sure and certain sense that nothing is wrong, that life does not beat or pause, that the universe expands relentlessly. You can feel the source of all the world's light in your beating heart, in the map of your blood, in the vast range and pace of your brain. That's the light, baby. You don't need any other. Just that light beating forever inside you. ~ Scott Bradfield
Exasperating Men quotes by Scott Bradfield
There is a built-in sense of indebtedness in the consciousness of man, an awareness of owing gratitude, or being caled upon at certain moments to reciprocate, to answer, to live in a way which is compatible with the grandeur and mystery of living. ~ Abraham Joshua Heschel
Exasperating Men quotes by Abraham Joshua Heschel
Ladies,

I have bad news for you. Men are pigs. No really. I know you think you know what I'm talking about but you don't know the half of it. You have no idea how depraved we men really are.

I'm about to tell you the truth about men. The whole truth. Not that sanitized holier-than-thou shit they feed you in all those other relationship books.

I'm gonna take you into the abyss that is the male mind. It's a dark and scary place. You're not gonna like it. It's dirty in there. Icky. Don't touch anything. Bring hand sanitizer. ~ Oliver Markus Malloy
Exasperating Men quotes by Oliver Markus Malloy
One man lives out his life beating his fears into submission, while another lives out his life letting his fears beat him into submission. And while the fears are the same, the kind of men that they produce are not. ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
Exasperating Men quotes by Craig D. Lounsbrough
At this day ... the earth sustains on her bosom many monster minds, minds which are not afraid to employ the seed of Deity deposited in human nature as a means of suppressing the name of God. Can anything be more detestable than this madness in man, who, finding God a hundred times both in his body and his soul, makes his excellence in this respect a pretext for denying that there is a God? He will not say that chance has made him different from the brutes; ... but, substituting Nature as the architect of the universe, he suppresses the name of God. ~ John Calvin
