Death is only a larger kind of going abroad. ~ Samuel Butler
Death Sympathy quotes by Samuel Butler
Death never takes the wise man by surprise; He is always ready to go. ~ Jean De La Fontaine
Death Sympathy quotes by Jean De La Fontaine
Death is the most blessed dream. ~ Georg Buchner
Death Sympathy quotes by Georg Buchner
Death is only a launching into the region of the strange Untried; it is but the first salutation to the possibilities of the immense Remote, the Wild, the Watery, the Unshored. ~ Herman Melville
Death Sympathy quotes by Herman Melville
We understand death for the first time when he puts his hand upon one whom we love ~ Madame De Stael
Death Sympathy quotes by Madame De Stael
Death should hold no fear for a man as old as me, but it does. Isn't that silly? It is always dark where I am, so why should I fear the darkness? Yet I cannot help but wonder what will follow, when the last warmth leaves my body. ~ George R R Martin
Death Sympathy quotes by George R R Martin
Often sweeps Death. The houses of living, A menial task, That brings into her fair, dark eyes. A sparkle of joy. At the little things she finds there. ~ Greg Keyes
Death Sympathy quotes by Greg Keyes
If a man that is desperately sick today, did believe he should arise sound the next morning; or a man today, in despicable poverty, had assurance that he should tomorrow arise a prince: would they be afraid to go to bed ... ? ~ Richard Baxter
Death Sympathy quotes by Richard Baxter
Our greatest prejudice is against death. It spans age, gender and race. We spend immeasurable amounts of energy fighting an event that will eventually triumph. Though it is noble not to give in easily, the most alive people I've ever met are those who embrace their death. They love, laugh and live more fully. ~ Andy Webster
Death Sympathy quotes by Andy Webster
I feel tired to death, paralyzed by this mysteriously wasted life's stubborn concentration on hopelessness and dissolution. It occurs to me that if I lie still like this for long enough, then I'll be dead when I finally wake again, and nothing can ever again torment me, beset me, or present me with evidence of my baseness and decay. That thought is the only one that can comfort me. ~ Christer Kihlman
Death Sympathy quotes by Christer Kihlman
You will soon be well, if I do not talk you to death. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Death Sympathy quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
One thing I knew about the novelist's task: when in doubt, write; when empty, write; when afraid, write. Nothing is more impenetrable than the blank page. The blank page is the void, the absence of sense and feeling, the white light of literary death. ~ Philip Sington
Death Sympathy quotes by Philip Sington
This was life though, wasn't it? Death made you crave life. The world is nothing but a bunch of thin lines separating what we think are extremes. ~ Harlan Coben
Death Sympathy quotes by Harlan Coben
In the ignorance that implies the impression that knits knowledge that finds the nameform that whets the wits that convey contacts that sweeten sensation that drives desire that adheres to attachment that dogs death that bitches birth that entails the ensuance of existentiality. ~ James Joyce
Death Sympathy quotes by James Joyce
War! Someone's making a hell of a lot of money. ~ Anthony T. Hincks
Death Sympathy quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
The only one of the early investigators who carried the exploration of hysteria to its logical conclusion was Breuer's patient Anna O. After Breuer abandoned her, she apparently remained ill for several years. And then she recovered. The mute hysteric who had invented the "talking cure" found her voice and her sanity, in the women's liberation movement. Under a pseudonym, Paul Berthold, she translated into German the classic treatise by Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Women, and authored a play, Women's Rights. Under her own name, Bertha Papenheim became a prominent feminist social worker, intellectual, and organizer. In the course of a long and fruitful career she directed an orphanage for girls, founded a feminist organization for Jewish women and traveled throughout Europe and the Middle East to campaign against the sexual exploitation of women and children. Her dedication, energy and commitment were legendary. In the words of a colleague, 'A volcano lived in this woman... Her fight against the abuse of women and children was almost a physically felt pain for her.' At her death, the philosopher Martin Buber commemorated her: 'I not only admired her but loved her, and will love her until the day I die. There are people of spirit and there are people of passion, both less common than one might think. Rarer still are the people of spirit and passion. But rarest of all is a passionate spirit. Bertha Pappenheim was a woman with just such a spirit. ~ Judith Lewis Herman
Death Sympathy quotes by Judith Lewis Herman
Accepting Uncle Tom's Cabin as revelation second only to the Bible, the Yankee women all wanted to know about the bloodhounds which every Southerner kept to track down runaway slaves. And they never believed her when she told them she had only seen one bloodhound in all her life and it was a small mild dog and not a huge ferocious mastiff. They wanted to know about the dreadful branding irons which planters used to mark the faces of their slaves and the cat-o'-nine-tails with which they beat them to death, and they evidenced what Scarlett felt was a very nasty and ill-bred interest in slave concubinage.
Especially did she resent this in view of the enormous increase in mulatto babies in Atlanta since the Yankee soldiers had settled in the town. ~ Margaret Mitchell
Death Sympathy quotes by Margaret Mitchell
The Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea are made of the same water. It flows down, clean and cool, from the heights of Herman and the roots of the cedars of Lebanon. the Sea of Galilee makes beauty of it, the Sea of Galilee has an outlet. It gets to give. It gathers in its riches that it may pour them out again to fertilize the Jordan plain. But the Dead Sea with the same water makes horror. For the Dead Sea has no outlet. It gets to keep. ~ Harry Emerson Fosdick
Death Sympathy quotes by Harry Emerson Fosdick
I have absolutely no fear of death. Why would I? There's nothing to fear-only joy to experience. ~ Don Piper
Death Sympathy quotes by Don Piper
Now I end my death song. I give my farewell to mountain and sky. It has been good to be alive. ~ Tad Williams
Death Sympathy quotes by Tad Williams
Pull yourself together. People among the living still need your help, and I haven't given you permission to quit. ~ Ann Aguirre
Death Sympathy quotes by Ann Aguirre
The souls of men are not measured by what they have done, but by what they leave behind. ~ Anonymous
Death Sympathy quotes by Anonymous
You're a sick son of a bitch. I'm your judge and jury. I find you guilty as charged and the sentence is death, mother fucker! ~ Rhonda R. Dennis
Death Sympathy quotes by Rhonda R. Dennis
Aren't you afraid of dying?
Not really. I've watched lots of good-for-nothing, worthless people die, and if people like that can do it, then I should be able to handle it. ~ Haruki Murakami
Death Sympathy quotes by Haruki Murakami
Let me starve myself to death
And still walk a mile.
Let my feet hurt,
Let my lips crack! ~ Tshepo Ramodisa
Death Sympathy quotes by Tshepo Ramodisa
On the day when you again allow abominable men to confiscate your freedom, your money, your lives, your private property, your manhood and your sacred honor, in the name of "security' or "national emergency' you will die, and never again shall you be free. If plotters again destroy your Republic, they will do it by your greedy and ignorant assent, by your disregard of your neighbors' rights, by your apathy and your stupidity. We were brought to the brink of universal death and darkness because we had become that most contemptible of people -- an angerless one. Keep alive and vivid all your righteous anger against traitors, against those who would abrogate your Constitution, against those who would lead you to wars with false slogans and cunning appeals to your patriotism. ~ Taylor Caldwell
Death Sympathy quotes by Taylor Caldwell
Death is a funny thing. Not funny haha, like a Woody Allen movie, but funny strange, like a Woody Allen marriage. ~ Norm MacDonald
Death Sympathy quotes by Norm MacDonald
Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that has nothing to do with you, This storm is you. Something inside you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step. There's no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up the sky like pulverized bones. ~ Haruki Murakami
Death Sympathy quotes by Haruki Murakami
There is more, but James has ceased to listen. In the months since Agnes' disappearance, his old fear of hellfire has been replaced by another more terrible and pervasive: the fear of the void. Cold Marsh has been abandoned, cursed by God or the Devil both. He is certain of this. He will lose his daughter to death or to marriage, and when the darkness descends to cover his eyes, he will face that black maw alone. ~ Daniel Mills
Death Sympathy quotes by Daniel Mills
By turns sad and uplifting, Life in the Valley of Death tells the amazing tale of Alan Rabinowitz's courageous and spirited efforts to protect Burma's (Myanmar's) remaining tigers and establish the Hukawng Valley Reserve. It is hard to imagine a more passionate or exciting account of today's conservation challenges, or a more thoughtful rendering of life, death, and politics in Burma's most remote corners. ~ Thant Myint-U
Death Sympathy quotes by Thant Myint-U
The word Familia did not originally signify the ideal of our modern philistine, which is a compound of sentimentality and domestic discord. Among the Romans, in the beginning, it did not even refer to the married couple and their children, but to the slaves alone. Famulus means a household slave and familia signifies the totality of slaves belonging to one individual. The expression was invented by the romans to describe a new social organism, the head of which had under him wife and children and a number of slaves, under Roman paternal power, with power of life and death over them all. ~ Friedrich Engels
Death Sympathy quotes by Friedrich Engels
The Pakistani film International Gorillay (International guerillas), produced by Sajjad Gul, told the story of a group of local heroes - of the type that would, in the language of a later age, come to be known as jihadis, or terrorists - who vowed to find and kill an author called "Salman Rushdie" . The quest for "Rushdie" formed the main action of the film and "his" death was the film's version of happy ending.

"Rushdie" himself was depicted as a drunk, constantly swigging from a bottle, and a sadist. He lived in what looked very like a palace on what looked very like an island in the Philippines (clearly all novelists had second homes of this kind), being protected by what looked very like the Israeli Army (this presumably being a service offered by Israel to all novelists), and he was plotting the overthrow of Pakistan by the fiendish means of opening chains of discotheques and gambling dens across that pure and virtuous land, a perfidious notion for which, as the British Muslim "leader" Iqbal Sacranie might have said, death was too light a punishment. "Rushdie" was dressed exclusively in a series of hideously coloured safari suits - vermilion safari suits, aubergine safari suits, cerise safari suits - and the camera, whenever it fell upon the figure of this vile personage, invariably started at his feet and then panned [sic] with slow menace up to his face. So the safari suits got a lot of screen time, and when he saw a videotape of the film the fashion insult ~ Salman Rushdie
Death Sympathy quotes by Salman Rushdie
The Biblical vision is not so much concerned with life after death but about life after life after death. ~ N. T. Wright
Death Sympathy quotes by N. T. Wright
The funny thing about murder is that the act is often committed decades before the actual action. Something happens, and it leads, inexorably, to death many years later. A bad seed is planted. It's like those old horror films from the Hammer studios, of the monster, not running, never running, but walking without pause, without thought or mercy, toward its victim. Murder is often like that. It starts way far off. ~ Louise Penny
Death Sympathy quotes by Louise Penny
I guess I think differently than most folks. I think the reason the world is a mystical, enchanting place, is because of the cycle of life. My body will decompose, but maybe some little element of it will be transformed into a particle of dirt, over years and years, and then a glorious flower will be nurtured by this particle of dirt. Then this flower will nourish a random bumblebee, who in turn will be eaten by a raven. So, in some future life, I'll be able to fly. I look forward to that. I've always admired the freedom of birds. ~ E. M. Crane
Death Sympathy quotes by E. M. Crane
The biological agents we believe Iraq can produce include anthrax, botulinum, toxin, aflatoxin and ricin. All eventually result in excruciatingly painful death. ~ Tony Blair
Death Sympathy quotes by Tony Blair
Sometimes people just need to talk. They need to be heard. they need the validation of my time, my silence, my unspoken compassion. They don't need advice, sympathy or counselling. They need to hear the sound of their own voices speaking their own truths, articulating their own feelings, as those may be at a particular moment. Then, when they're finished, they simply need a nod of the head, a pat on the shoulder or a hug. I'm learning that sometimes silence really is golden, and that sometimes "Fuck, eh?" is as spiritual a thing as needs to be said. ~ Richard Wagamese
Death Sympathy quotes by Richard Wagamese
Envy, if surrounded on all sides by the brightness of another's prosperity, like the scorpion confined within a circle of fire, will sting itself to death. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
Death Sympathy quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
My point is that death is more tragic than life, than any life, because every life has hope of some kind. ~ Shalom Auslander
Death Sympathy quotes by Shalom Auslander
Death is not the end. It is a midway state. ~ Darren Shan
Death Sympathy quotes by Darren Shan
It's an insidious idea, this notion that there is life after death. The promise of a reward in the afterlife has been used as an excuse to deny help to the poor, helpless and oppressed; to explain away human misery rather than deal with it. It is an idea that is used to encourage young men and women to kill themselves, and others, so that they can become martyrs. It allows victims of injustice to be told not to worry because justice will be done in the afterlife. It depresses me to think that so many people on the planet live their lives with this notion. Can we truly fulfill our potential as a species as long as we hold on to, and encourage, the perpetuation of the lie of life after death? ~ Alom Shaha
Death Sympathy quotes by Alom Shaha
Madness doesn't get off wearing gloves. It needs to feel skin on skin, smell the blood and shit as it brings itself off. ~ Benjamin R. Smith
Death Sympathy quotes by Benjamin R. Smith
By the Angel, Bridget's depressing," said Henry, setting down his newspaper directly on his plate and causing the edge to soak through with egg yolk. Charlotte opened her mouth as if to object, and closed it again. "It's all heartbreak, death and unrequited love."
"Well, that is what most songs are about," said Will. "Requited love is nice, but it doesn't make much of a ballad. ~ Cassandra Clare
Death Sympathy quotes by Cassandra Clare
When I was a kid I worried that when I woke up, I'd find my family having breakfast with my doppelgänger. We would fight to the death, and then my family would peacefully finish breakfast. ~ Fran Krause
Death Sympathy quotes by Fran Krause
I think it is about life. I think there is always more life than death. Those who lived are always alive for someone. Those who are alive remember life, not death. And when you are dead nothing happens. Death is nothing. ~ Aleksandar Hemon
Death Sympathy quotes by Aleksandar Hemon
Fantasy is uni-age. You can start it in the creche, and it follows you to death. ~ Terry Pratchett
