A noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die. ~ Daniel Burnham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Burnham
Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. ~ Daniel Burnham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Burnham
Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die, but long after we are gone be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistence. ~ Daniel Burnham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Burnham
Congress displayed contempt for the city's residents, yet it retained a fondness for buildings and parks. In 1900, the centennial of the federal government's move to Washington, many congressmen expressed frustration that the proud nation did not have a capital to rival London, Paris, and Berlin. The following year, Senator James McMillan of Michigan, chairman of the Senate District Committee, recruited architects Daniel Burnham and Charles McKim, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to propose a park system. The team, thereafter known as the McMillan Commission, emerged with a bold proposal in the City Beautiful tradition, based on the White City of Chicago's 1893 Columbian Exposition. Their plan reaffirmed L'Enfant's avenues as the best guide for the city's growth and emphasized the majesty of government by calling for symmetrical compositions of horizontal, neoclassical buildings of marble and white granite sitting amid wide lawns and reflecting pools. Eventually, the plan resulted in the remaking of the Mall as an open lawn, the construction of the Lincoln Memorial and Memorial Bridge across the Potomac, and the building of Burnham's Union Station. Commissioned in 1903, when the state of the art in automobiles and airplanes was represented by the curved-dash Olds and the Wright Flyer, the station served as a vast and gorgeous granite monument to rail transportation. ~ Zachary M. Schrag
Daniel Burnham quotes by Zachary M. Schrag
It was Chicago with its World's Fair which vivified the national desire for civic beauty. ~ Daniel Burnham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Burnham
An artist, he paints with lakes and wooded slopes, with lawns and banks and forest-covered hills. - Daniel Burnham talking about Frederick Law Olmstead ~ Erik Larson
Daniel Burnham quotes by Erik Larson
The only way to handle big business is to delegate, delegate, delegate. ~ Daniel Burnham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Burnham
Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. ~ Daniel Burnham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Burnham
Art is the reordering of nature - the qualities of space and time - in new perceptual and material form. ~ Daniel Bell
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Bell
Daniel was among the first fruits of the captivity; and this is an instance of God's judgments being so incomprehensible by us. For had there been any integrity in the whole people, surely Daniel was a remarkable example of it for Ezekiel includes him among the three just men by whom most probably God would be appeased. (Ezekiel 14:14.) ~ John Calvin
Daniel Burnham quotes by John Calvin
Your genome knows much more about your medical history than you do. ~ W. Daniel Hillis
Daniel Burnham quotes by W. Daniel Hillis
This is that rest this vain world lends,
To end in death that all things ends. ~ Samuel Daniel
Daniel Burnham quotes by Samuel Daniel
Put your hair up, Min. The secret ingredient is not your hair. ~ Daniel Handler
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Handler
There's a jangle to the music of the dead. I mean that certain something that's so happy and so sad at the same time. The notes almost make a perfect harmony, but don't. Then they do but quickly crash into dissonance. They simmer in that sweet in-between rhythm section rattling along all the while. Chords collapse chaotically into one another and just when you think it's gonna spill into total nonsense, it stands back up and comes through sweet as a lullaby on your mami's lips. Songs that'll make people tap their feet and drink melancholically but not realize the twisting genius lurking within until generations later. ~ Daniel Jose Older
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Jose Older
God help us if we cannot sacrifice our percentages and our programs when He has called us to sacrifice our lives. ~ Daniel Palmer
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Palmer
The Redskins have been active champions in the fight against childhood obesity through our commitment with the NFL Play 60 program. ~ Daniel Snyder
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Snyder
Every action begins with a thought, and if you don't watch what you're thinking, your thoughts will get the best of you. ~ Daniel Beaty
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Beaty
Shyness displays itself differently in me. I think it's more an awkwardness. ~ Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Radcliffe
The "Florida effect" involves two stages of priming. First, the set of words primes thoughts of old age, though the word old is never mentioned; second, these thoughts prime a behavior, walking slowly, which is associated with old age. All this happens without any awareness. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Kahneman
Daniel grinned. "Do something!" he told Jesse. "Marry her, before she does decide to marry Anthony Miller. ~ Heather Graham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Heather Graham
The face that looked back was narrow, and although it was not beautiful, it was not ugly. I am nondescript, she thought. Nondescript features with shoulder-length dark hair. Hmm. She opened the robe and looked critically at her body. Lots of adjectives beginning with the letter S are appropriate here, she thought grimly. Short. Scrawny. Small breasts. Skinned knees (although presumably those were only temporary). ~ Daniel O'Malley
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel O'Malley
Something was beyond wrong. Sebeck looked at the faces of the agents and police arrayed around him. There was abject hatred in their eyes. Burning anger. He knew that look. It was the look reserved for the vilest criminals. They were closing in from two directions - leaving a clear field of fire. Twenty or thirty heavily armed men. Sebeck glanced at Ross, who already had his hands on his head. "What the hell is going on, Jon?" "I don't know. But the Daemon's got something to do with it." "This is your last warning! Put your hands on your head, or we will open fire!" Sebeck felt his blood rising. He put his hands on the back of his head but looked to Ross. "Why are they looking at me?" "I don't know." The Feds hit Sebeck like linebackers. They ~ Daniel Suarez
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Suarez
We all have deal-breakers, Daniel. Some of us just hope we can keep them hidden forever. ~ Colleen Hoover
Daniel Burnham quotes by Colleen Hoover
Overloading attention shrinks mental control. Life immersed in digital distractions creates a near constant cognitive overload. And that overload wears out self-control. ~ Daniel Goleman
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Goleman
If the newspapers of a country are filled with good news, the jails of that country will be filled with good people. ~ Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Patrick Moynihan
A human body is a conversation going on, both within the cells and between the cells, and they're telling each other to grow and to die; when you're sick, something's gone wrong with that conversation. ~ W. Daniel Hillis
Daniel Burnham quotes by W. Daniel Hillis
So she loved him. She just did immediately and again often and clearly naturally and soundly and obviously and many others. ~ Daniel Handler
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Handler
they must create the environment for action. In June 1967 Robert Kennedy said,
"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself. But each of us can work to
change a small portion of events. And in the total of all those acts, will be written
the history of this generation" (p. 237). ~ Daniel P. Modaff
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel P. Modaff
Talbot's eyes widened as he recognised Daniel. The four lost boys got out of the car and stood behind their alpha.
"So he's back?" Talbot asked.
"Yep." I couldn't stop smiling a bit and thinking of that song from the oldies station my Grandpa Kramer used to listen to. My boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble ... ~ Bree Despain
Daniel Burnham quotes by Bree Despain
He who wants the world must first escape from it. ~ Daniel Handler
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Handler
To teach students any psychology they did not know before, you must surprise them. But which surprise will do? Nisbett and Borgida found that when they presented their students with a surprising statistical fact, the students managed to learn nothing at all. But when the students were surprised by individual cases - two nice people who had not helped - they immediately made the generalization and inferred that helping is more difficult than they had thought. ~ Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Kahneman
Reactive arthritis is something I've been dealing with for nearly a year. ~ Daniel Johns
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Johns
Harness the power of peers. ~ Daniel H. Pink
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel H. Pink
The sweet spot for smart decisions, then, comes not just from being a domain expert, but also from having high self-awareness. ~ Daniel Goleman
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Goleman
life of a professional spy as one of constant travel and mind-numbing boredom broken by interludes of sheer terror. ~ Daniel Silva
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Silva
His wings burned and he felt ashamed. This life in Italy had been a dark and ugly death for her. One of the worst. He would never stop blaming himself for the horrible way she had passed out of this life.
But that was years after where Daniel stood today. This was the hospital where they'd first met, when Lucia was so young and lovely, innocent and saucy in the same breath. Here she had loved him instantly and completely. Though she was too young for Daniel to show he loved her back,he had never discouraged her affection. She used to slip her hand inside his when they strolled under the orange trees on the Piazza della Repubblica, but when he squeezed her hand, she would blush. It always made him laugh, the way she could be so bold, then suddenly turn shy.She used to tell him that she wanted to marry him someday.
"You're back!"
Daniel spun around. He hadn't heard the door behind him opening. Lucia jumped when she saw him. She was beaming, showing a perfect row of tiny white teeth. Her beauty took his breath away.
What did she mean,he was back? Ah, this was when he'd hidden from Luce, frightened of killing her by accident. He was not allowed to reveal anything to her; she had to discover the details for herself. Was he even to hint broadly, she would simply combust. Had he stayed, she might have grilled him and perhaps forced the truth out of him...He didn't dare. ~ Lauren Kate
Daniel Burnham quotes by Lauren Kate
human beings are actually more closely related to the two species of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes, the familiar chimp, and Pan paniscus, the rare, smaller pygmy chimp or bonobo) than those chimpanzees are to the other apes. ~ Daniel C. Dennett
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel C. Dennett
TO LEARN IT MORE DEEPLY, TEACH IT ~ Daniel Coyle
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Coyle
A newspaper, as I'm sure you know, is a collection of supposedly true stories written down by writers who either saw them happen or talked to people who did. These writers are called journalists, and like telephone operators, butchers, ballerinas, and people who clean up after horses, journalists can sometimes make mistakes. ~ Daniel Handler
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Handler
It's easy to dismiss design - to relegate it to mere ornament, the prettifying of places and objects to disguise their banality. But that is a serious misunderstanding of what design is and why it matters - especially now. ~ Daniel H. Pink
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel H. Pink
Erudite and entertaining, Max Anderson is the perfect tour guide to the world of art. The Quality Instinct is both educational and enlightening from start to finish, the thinking person's guide to museums. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to truly understand what makes a masterpiece. ~ Daniel Silva
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Silva
Had Eudokia been granted divinity she'd have found something better to do with it than watching two old farts in ugly robes mutter gibberish over summer wine. ~ Daniel Polansky
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Polansky
Taste is a mystery. ~ Daniel Mendelsohn
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Mendelsohn
But there is a critical point about differences between individuals that exerts arguably more influence on worker productivity than any other. The factor is locus of control, a fancy name for how people view their autonomy and agency in the world. People with an internal locus of control believe that they are responsible for (or at least can influence) their own fates and life outcomes. They may or may not feel they are leaders, but they feel that they are essentially in charge of their lives. Those with an external locus of control see themselves as relatively powerless pawns in some game played by others; they believe that other people, environmental forces, the weather, malevolent gods, the alignment of celestial bodies
basically any and all external events
exert the most influence on their lives. ~ Daniel J. Levitin
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel J. Levitin
Neal Stephenson is great. He can write about a white wall for six pages, and it sounds fascinating. I read the whole 'Baroque Cycle' and 'Cryptonomicon.' ~ Daniel Suarez
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Suarez
Waiting for a battle was the hardest part. Unless you got a dagger in your gut during the battle. Then that was hardest. Or you got through just fine and saw your men dead around you. Then that was. ~ Daniel Abraham
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Abraham
That's the Rookery. It is hidden from the eyes of the populace, a secret fortress that protects the normal people even as they remain ignorant of it. It is a testament to the willingness of humanity to ignore the obvious. ~ Daniel O'Malley
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel O'Malley
If you're only going to give away 50 percent of your wealth ... c'mon. I'm going to do much more than that. ~ Daniel A. D'Aniello
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel A. D'Aniello
Crazy. It was the same word María and Tía Rosa flung at Grandpa Lázaro. The same word anyone said when they didn't understand something. "Crazy" was a way to shut people up, disregard them entirely. ~ Daniel Jose Older
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Jose Older
To feel successful, you must be able to be honest about the things that are really important to you. ~ Daniel G. Amen
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel G. Amen
Luce blushed. "Then what kind of angel are you?"
"I'm sort of in between gigs right now," Daniel said. ~ Lauren Kate
Daniel Burnham quotes by Lauren Kate
With man gone, will there be hope for gorilla? ~ Daniel Quinn
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel Quinn
Daniel, I was asked of a budding author, how do you know if your story is on track? My answer: I start by knowing my intention, my target. Then, with purpose, I write the scene that unfolds before me, as faithfully as is human. - Daniel LaMonte ~ Daniel LaMonte
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel LaMonte
The scientific community having made a rapid ascent from deep poverty to great affluence, from academe's cloisters to Washington's high councils, still tends to be a bit excitable - not unlike a nouveau riche in a fluctuating market. ~ Daniel S. Greenberg
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel S. Greenberg
They think they're really sticking it to you, but they're being - herded. Into the service of agendas they'd never support in a thousand years, if they only knew. And they're dedicated, Daniel. They're ferocious. They fight your wars with a passion you could never buy and never coerce, because they're doing it out of pure ideology. ~ Peter Watts
Daniel Burnham quotes by Peter Watts
Socialism is practical, in the best sense of the term; a living, vital force of inestimable value to society. ~ Daniel De Leon
Daniel Burnham quotes by Daniel De Leon
