All forms of literature are dangerous; but in none is the danger more acute than in historical fiction... ~ John Julius Norwich
Count Belisarius quotes by John Julius Norwich
It is my belief that the writer, the free-lance author, should be and must be a critic of the society in which he lives. ... That is all I ask of the author. To be a hero, appoint himself a moral leader, wanted or not. I believe that words count, that writing matters, that poems, essays, and novels - in the long run - make a difference. If they do not, then in the words of my exemplar Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the writer's work is of no more importance than the barking of village dogs at night. ~ Edward Abbey
Count Belisarius quotes by Edward Abbey
Count your blessings and enjoy them. Live, laugh and love. Be kind and gentle. This is life. ~ George Pornaris
Count Belisarius quotes by George Pornaris
For all his ego and mendacity, Moore is immensely popular. He's got an Oscar, more film awards than we can easily count, and a following whose blindest followers resemble cult members. Like a cult, the Moore movement shares the drive to recruit converts.... ~ David T. Hardy
Count Belisarius quotes by David T. Hardy
When we feel sad, all we need to do is to count our blessings, no matter how few we notice, so we can feel grateful for what we have been given. Sadness soon disappears and, in return, we get inspired to bless others. ~ Akiane Kramarik
Count Belisarius quotes by Akiane Kramarik
The horse is dead," she says and squeezes Soldier's hand. "From here we walk."
"Anyone ever told you you're sort of a creepy kid?" Odd Willie asks.
"All the damn time," Emmie tells him. "I don't bother keeping count anymore. ~ Caitlin R. Kiernan
Count Belisarius quotes by Caitlin R. Kiernan
Over the years since then though, I couldn't even begin to try and count all the mistakes I've made but also, all the joys I've found while traveling on the road. So in living this kind of lifestyle day in and day out for that many years you learn. You learn a lot about yourself. You learn a lot about how people should be treated and how they should treat each other. For the most part, I've really learned patience, temperament and fairness all around. ~ Chuck Ragan
Count Belisarius quotes by Chuck Ragan
In the end, all that ultimately matters is what you've done. Not what you've said, or promised, or intended. This is a hard lesson for me because I can talk a great game. I would like talk to count. But it doesn't, not in the final tally. If I've told someone I love her and have not demonstrated my love with fidelity and care and long-term commitment, then in the end, my talk of love matters little. ~ David Lozell Martin
Count Belisarius quotes by David Lozell Martin
Is life worth keeping on with, whatever happens?" Was she talking about living broken, living with loss? Did she count his loss a real one, and did she really want to know or was there a barb in this somewhere? Sometimes, Akiva felt like he didn't know his sister at all. "Yes," he said, wary, thinking of the thurible, and Karou. "As long as you're alive, there's always a chance things will get better."
"Or worse," said Liraz.
"Yes," he conceded. "Usually worse. ~ Laini Taylor
Count Belisarius quotes by Laini Taylor
I take a deep breath,
count to ten,
and bury it,
way down deep ~ Sarah Ockler
Count Belisarius quotes by Sarah Ockler
I'd like to be your friend - but only if you promise not to ever, ever count on me. ~ Joyce Carol Oates
Count Belisarius quotes by Joyce Carol Oates
We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made. ~ Albert Einstein
Count Belisarius quotes by Albert Einstein
Diana" was the first thing out of her mouth. "I'm dying," the too familiar voice on the other end moaned.

I snorted, locking the front door behind me as I held the phone up to my face with my shoulder. "You're pregnant. You're not dying."

"But it feels like I am," the person who rarely ever complained whined. We'd been best friends our entire lives, and I could only count on one hand the number of times I'd heard her grumble about something that wasn't her family. I'd had the title of being the whiner in our epic love affair that had survived more shit than I was willing to remember right then.

I held up a finger when Louie tipped his head toward the kitchen as if asking if I was going to get started on dinner or not. "Well, nobody told you to get pregnant with the Hulk's baby. What did you expect? He's probably going to come out the size of a toddler."

The laugh that burst out of her made me laugh too. This fierce feeling of missing her reminded me it had been months since we'd last seen each other. "Shut up."

"You can't avoid the truth forever." Her husband was huge. I didn't understand why she wouldn't expect her unborn baby to be a giant too.

"Ugh." A long sigh came through the receiver in resignation. "I don't know what I was thinking - "

"You weren't thinking."

She ignored me. "We're never having another one. I can't sleep. I have to pee every two minutes. I'm the size of Mars - "
Mariana Zapata
Count Belisarius quotes by Mariana Zapata
In mathematics or physics, infinity is greater than one or two or any number countable. In how many ways can the world be destroyed based on ordered knowledge? You may be able to count this. But the truth is, you "really" don't know. These possibilities in your mind hold a set of unpredictable orders. One effect may be causative of another of another. It could be a culmination of effects you know as events where events are sets and subsets of potential possibilities.
In how many ways can the world be destroyed based on unordered possibilities? ~ Dew Platt
Count Belisarius quotes by Dew Platt
Tell me something," he said in a low voice.
"Anything," I answered.
"What's it like to have every breath count?"
I sat up and braced myself on my hand. "I'm not following what you mean," I answered.
Jess pulled himself up and propped his hands behind him. He looked out at the water as if he were seeing something from his past. "To live life as if it's your last breath. To know that any minute could be the final one and that you have to make the most of what's given to you. To know not everything is forever."
I could see the defined muscles in his arm, but what caught my attention the most was the bottom half of the symbol just under the sleeve of his shirt. Like before, I reached my finger and traced the snake resting on the stem. Sliding his sleeve higher, I followed upward toward the pedals of the black rose.
"It bothers you, doesn't it? The fact that you're constantly reminded of..." I couldn't finish what I wanted to say. I didn't want to hurt him.
He looked over his shoulder, and I stopped what I was doing to look up at him. "Yeah, it bothers me. But you know what bothers me even more? You're not like me. You can take a final breath. ~ Laura Burks
Count Belisarius quotes by Laura Burks
Clint's body count was now up to five - six including the vegetable. Killing was becoming a habit, and Clint realized that it was starting to bother him less each time. He feared that he was becoming desensitized to death, too accustomed to killing. ~ William T. Prince
Count Belisarius quotes by William T. Prince
And so, as quietly as he had lived, he slipped out of town, leaving only a note behind:
Well, that's that. I'm off, and if you don't believe I'm leaving, just count the days I'm gone. When you hear the phone not ringing, it'll be me that's not calling. Goodbye, old girl, and good luck.
Yours truly,
Earl Adcock
P.S. I'm not deaf. ~ Fannie Flagg
Count Belisarius quotes by Fannie Flagg
Death can only be profitable: there's no need to eat, drink, pay taxes, offend people, and since a person lies in a grave for hundreds or thousands of years, if you count it up the profit turns out to be enormous. ~ Anton Chekhov
Count Belisarius quotes by Anton Chekhov
I wished I had a friend in the Quarter, someone like Charlotte. Someone I could share secrets with, collapse on her bedroom floor, and spill my guts about Patrick to. I saw so many girls walking arm in arm, laughing, an inexplicable closeness and comfort that they had a protector and confidante. They had someone they could count on. ~ Ruta Sepetys
Count Belisarius quotes by Ruta Sepetys
I am the rainbow of love. Even if things get stormy, you know you can count on me. Call me Roy G. Biv, and I'll ride you like a pony. ~ Jarod Kintz
Count Belisarius quotes by Jarod Kintz
It's sad that several political parties still count the dead, the starving, the unemployed by their religion, caste, creed and sect. The young generation needs to engage in politics of right vs wrong and not right vs left. ~ Sharad Vivek Sagar
Count Belisarius quotes by Sharad Vivek Sagar
But what minutes! Count them by sensation, and not by calendars, and each moment is a day. ~ Benjamin Disraeli
Count Belisarius quotes by Benjamin Disraeli
Think of the moment you count
most foul in your life;
conjure it,
supplicate,
pray to it;
your face is bleak, you retract,
you dare not remember it. ~ Hilda Doolittle
Count Belisarius quotes by Hilda Doolittle
I think that the FDA has not been able to catch some of these things as quickly as I expect them to catch. And so we're gonna be doing a complete review of FDA operations ... at bare minimum, we should be able to count on our government keeping our kids safe when they eat peanut butter ... that's what Sasha eats for - for lunch - probably three times a week. ~ Barack Obama
Count Belisarius quotes by Barack Obama
Love isn't perfect, it isn't always beautiful, and most times it just flat out hurts like hell. But if you're lucky enough to find someone to share in that level of pain with you, then you should count yourself a lucky girl. ~ Brenna Aubrey
Count Belisarius quotes by Brenna Aubrey
You are my son Dantés! You are the child of my captivity. My priestly office condemned me to celibacy: God sent you to me both to console the man who could not be a father and the prisoner who could not be free ~ Alexandre Dumas
Count Belisarius quotes by Alexandre Dumas
Maybe the hairs on my head were numbered" she went on with a sudden serious sweetness "but nobody could ever count my love for you". ~ O. Henry
Count Belisarius quotes by O. Henry
I read mostly Irish, African, Japanese, South American, and African writers. You can count on Scandinavian literature for a certain kind of darkness, a modern mythic style. ~ Chris Abani
Count Belisarius quotes by Chris Abani
Suddenly I'd had Enough and this was no turn of phrase but a warm body, nervous, with a constitution I could count on like a younger brother. That's when I told my mother: on the other side it's really underdeveloped. We're going back. Really, I said: I want to go back, not possible unless Mummy who is part of me comes too. We wait in the empty street at the stop for Lethe, the only bus that runs both ways. My mother is losing patience. The bus doesn't come. It's not easy to wait for a bus you've heard is the only one that runs both ways. I check the guidebook. Neither Canto XIV of the Iliad nor Canto XI of the Odyssey mentions the place. Just what you'd expect for Lethe I tell myself. Naturally forgetfulness attracts attention to itself by means of absence and omission. But for my mother the bus not turning up is the theme of her nightmares. I explain that in this country one comes along every quarter of an hour...To signal to the vehicle that one wishes to board Oblivion Return one must fan open the grille by pressing a button and lighting up the small lantern on the top of the archway, which I did. It's the one gleam of hope in this world. ~ Helene Cixous
Count Belisarius quotes by Helene Cixous
Gratitude is the intention to count-your-blessings every day, every minute, while avoiding, whenever possible, the belief that you need or deserve different circumstances. ~ Timothy Miller
Count Belisarius quotes by Timothy Miller
Twenty-four hundred years ago, the ageing and grumpy Plato, in Book VII of the Laws, gave his definition of scientific illiteracy: Who is unable to count one, two, three, or to distinguish odd from even numbers, or is unable to count at all, or reckon night and day, and who is totally unacquainted with the revolution of the Sun and Moon, and the other stars . . . All freemen, I conceive, should learn as much of these branches of knowledge as every child in Egypt is taught when he learns the alphabet. In that country arithmetical games have been invented for the use of mere children, which they learn as pleasure and amusement ... I ... have late in life heard with amazement of our ignorance in these matters; to me we appear to be more like pigs than men, and I am quite ashamed, not only of myself, but of all Greeks. ~ Anonymous
Count Belisarius quotes by Anonymous
The first time I took Reed hunting was when he was six years old. I took him on the last day of duck season, and we pulled right up to the water. I gave him a BB gun, and I had my shotgun. Our property was a haven for wood ducks, so that's what I wanted to shoot so he could see what made this spot so special. Wouldn't you know it? The first two ducks that flew in our sights were a mallard drake and hen. We were on a bank instead of in a blind, which was unusual, but the ducks floated down and lit about ten feet in front of us. More than anything, I showed Reed the power of a duck call, because the water in front of us was only about two inches deep. I couldn't believe the ducks were sitting there.
"I'm going to count to three," I whispered to Reed. "Get your BB gun. When I get to three, you fire.
"One, two, three!" I said.
Reed shot his BB gun, and I fired my shotgun at the same time. The drake never knew what hit him, and Reed immediately looked down at his BB gun. It was like he was thinking, What is this thing? I don't think he even realized I killed the duck with my shotgun. Reed was so excited that I don't believe he realized that I had shot, despite the fact of the booming sound. He looked back at me, and I told him, "Boy, you put a good shot on him, son. ~ Jase Robertson
Count Belisarius quotes by Jase Robertson
In every moment...we choose to see others either as people like ourselves or as objects. They either count like we do or they don't. ~ The Arbinger Institute
Count Belisarius quotes by The Arbinger Institute
Purchased experiences don't count. ~ Douglas Coupland
Count Belisarius quotes by Douglas Coupland
Financiers live in a world of illusion. They count on something which they call the capital of the country, which has no existence. ~ George Bernard Shaw
Count Belisarius quotes by George Bernard Shaw
Maybe Laney's right. Maybe June did love me. But I'm far less certain that she knew I loved her. Did she realise how much I needed her around? It's not like I ever told her. I was too wrapped up in my own world to notice what was going on in hers. Even if she did know, it wasn't enough to count. It wasn't enough to make her stay. So really, what did it matter, in the end?
The bottom line is, it's my fault. I didn't love her enough. I didn't do enough. I wasn't enough. There's no excuse. There is nothing that will ever make that okay. ~ Hannah Harrington
Count Belisarius quotes by Hannah Harrington
Seriously, deleting IS writing. It's not only adding words that count, cutting does too! ~ Diem Burden
Count Belisarius quotes by Diem Burden
You just decide what your values are in life and what you are going to do, and then you feel like you count, and that makes life worth living. It makes my life meaningful. ~ Annie Lennox
Count Belisarius quotes by Annie Lennox
It's like Branson. When I went to Branson there was only 4 acts in there. Now, you can't count 'em. There's so many theatres now, that only the strong will survive. ~ Mickey Gilley
Count Belisarius quotes by Mickey Gilley
I have argued that this sort of thinking is problematic in at least two regards:

First, the notion that nonhuman animals do not have an interest in continued existence - that they do not have an interest in their lives - involves relying on a speciesist concept of what sort of self-awareness matters morally. I have argued that every sentient being necessarily has an interest in continued existence - every sentient being values her or his life - and that to say that only those animals (human animals) who have a particular sort of self-awareness have an interest in not being treated as commodities begs the fundamental moral question. Even if, as some maintain, nonhuman animals live in an "eternal present" - and I think that is empirically not the case at the very least for most of the nonhumans we routinely exploit who do have memories of the past and a sense of the future - they have, in each moment, an interest in continuing to exist. To say that this does not count morally is simply speciesist.

Second, even if animals do not have an interest in continuing to live and only have interests in not suffering, the notion that, as a practical matter, we will ever be able to accord those interests the morally required weight is simply fantasy. The notion that we property owners are ever going to accord any sort of significant weight to the interests of property in not suffering is simply unrealistic. Is it possible in theory? Yes. Is it possible as a matter of ~ Gary L. Francione
Count Belisarius quotes by Gary L. Francione
Resolve to make every day count. Be a woman of action. Treat each day as precious. ~ Emilie Barnes
Count Belisarius quotes by Emilie Barnes
And I will stroll the merry way
And jump the hedges first
And I will drink the clear
Clean water for to quench my thirst
And I shall watch the ferry-boats
And they'll get high
On a bluer ocean
Against tomorrows sky
And I will never grow so old again
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain

Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
My, my, my, my, my sweet thing
And I shall drive my chariot
Down your streets and cry
Hey, it's me, I'm dynamite
And I don't know why
And you shall take me strongly
In your arms again
And I will not remember
That I even felt the pain.
We shall walk and talk
In gardens all misty and wet with rain
And I will never, never, never
Grow so old again.

Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
My, my, my, my, my sweet thing
And I will raise my hand up
Into the night time sky
And count the stars
That's shining in your eye
Just to dig it all an not to wonder
That's just fine
And I'll be satisfied
Not to read in between the lines
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain
And I will never, ever, ever, ever
Grow so old again.
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
Sugar-baby with your champagne eyes
And your saint-like smile....

- Sweet Thing ~ Van Morrison
Count Belisarius quotes by Van Morrison
Today I will let go of my need for approval and my need to be liked. Instead, I will choose to like and approve of myself. The people who count (including me) will respect me when I'm true to who I really am. ~ Melody Beattie
Count Belisarius quotes by Melody Beattie
Truthfully, I'm not sure at all, but I'd never let anyone know that, not even Seven. And before you say shit, I'm well aware that I just told you, but you don't count so stop trying to inject yourself into the damn story. This is an important moment. ~ J.M. Darhower
Count Belisarius quotes by J.M. Darhower
If you do weave one-liners into a story, you have to have an overall story as well, otherwise it doesn't really count as narrative. ~ Tim Vine
Count Belisarius quotes by Tim Vine
Remember: "For want of a nail, the horseshoe was lost, for want of a horseshoe, the horse was lost, for want of a horse, the battle was lost, for want of a battle, the war was lost." This parable should be the mantra of everyone who thinks her or his vote doesn't count. ~ Gloria Steinem
Count Belisarius quotes by Gloria Steinem
Even if you have just half an hour, you can get a good workout. So I try to make it count no matter where I am. ~ James Maslow
Count Belisarius quotes by James Maslow
Sure, there are good things, lots, sure, blow jobs, chocolate mousse, winning streaks, the warm fire in your enemy's house, good book, hunk of cheese, flagon of ale, office raise, championship ring, the misfortunes of others, sure, good things, beyond count, queens, kings, old clocks, comfy clothes, lots, innumerable items in stock, baseball cards and bingo buttons, pot-au-feu, listen, we could go on and on like a long speech, sure it's a great world, sights to see, canyons full of canyon, corn on the cob, the eroded great pyramids, contaminated towns, eroded hillsides, deleafed trees, those whitened limbs stark and noble in the evening light, geeeez, what gobs of good things, no shit, service elevators, what would we do without, and all the inventions of man, Krazy Glue and food fights, girls wrestling amid mounds of Jell-O, drafts of dark beer, no end of blue sea, formerly full of fish, eroded hopes, eruptions of joy, because we're winning, have won, won, won what? the . . . the Title. ~ William H. Gass
Count Belisarius quotes by William H. Gass
I will count my blessings when I am in the doldrums, count to ten when I am quarrelsome, and count on my friends when I need a laugh. ~ Gina Barreca
