May all sentient beings be happy and free of suffering. ~ Gautama Buddha
Sentient Beings quotes by Gautama Buddha
To feel overflowing love and almost unbearable compassion for all living creatures is the best way to fulfil the wishes of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Even if for the moment you cannot actually help a sentient being in an external way, meditate on love and compassion constantly over the months and years until compassion is knit inseparably into the very fabric of your mind. ~ Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
Sentient Beings quotes by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
Can there be a completely different set of laws of physics in a different universe, or do the laws of physics as we understand them hold true in all possible universes? If the answer is that a different set of laws can operate in a different universe system, this would suggest (from a Buddhist perspective) that even the laws of physics are entangled with the karma of the sentient beings that will arise in that universe. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Like all sentient beings, Fat Charlie had a weirdness quotient. For some days the needle had been over in the red, occasionally banging jerkily against the pin. Now the meter broke. ~ Neil Gaiman
Sentient Beings quotes by Neil Gaiman
Destroy knowledge?" I said. "The only point of existence, if there is one at all, is in the accumulation of the collective intelligence of the sentient beings of the universe."
"Even dangerous intelligence?"
"Intelligence is neutral. Application is everything."
She sighed. "Says the evil genius."
"Evil is a relative term. ~ A. Lee Martinez
Sentient Beings quotes by A. Lee Martinez
Being vegan is not just a matter of being 'kind' to animals. First and foremost, it is a matter of being just and observing our moral obligation to not treat other sentient beings as things. ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
Once we experience and feel this inter-dependence of all living beings,we will cease to hurt, humiliate, exploit and kill another. We will want to free all sentient beings from suffering. This is karuna, compassion, which in turn gives rise to the responsibility to create happiness and its causes for all. ~ Suresh Jindal
Sentient Beings quotes by Suresh Jindal
Worry! What a waste of time. All the holy books were right. Clearly 'worry' was the mark of a primitive and spiritually unevolved person. What was that line from Yeats, about the bemused Chinese sages? All things fall and are built again. Ancient glittering eyes. This was wisdom. People had been raging and weeping and destroying things for centuries and wailing about their puny individual lives, when - what was the point? All this useless sorrow? Consider the lilies of the field. Why did anyone ever worry about anything? Weren't we, as sentient beings, put upon the earth to be happy, in the brief time allotted to us? ~ Donna Tartt
Sentient Beings quotes by Donna Tartt
As long as space endures, as long as sentient beings remain, until then, may I too remain and dispel the miseries of the world. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Whenever I visit a market and see the chickens crowded together in tiny cages that give them no room to move around and spread their wings and the fish slowly drowning in the air, my heart goes out to them. People have to learn to think about animals in a different way, as sentient beings who love life and fear death. I urge everyone who can to adopt a compassionate vegetarian diet. ~ Dalai Lama
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama
It is love; love, the comfort of the human species, the preserver of the universe, the soul of all sentient beings, love, tender love. ~ Voltaire
Sentient Beings quotes by Voltaire
Sympathy beyond the confines of man, that is humanity to the lower animals, seems to be one of the latest moral acquisitions. It is apparently unfelt by savages, except towards their pets. How little the old Romans knew of it is shewn by their abhorrent gladiatorial exhibitions. The very idea of humanity, as far as I could observe, was new to most of the Gauchos of the Pampas. This virtue, one of the noblest with which man is endowed, seems to arise incidentally from our sympathies becoming more tender and more widely diffused, until they are extended to all sentient beings. As ~ Charles Darwin
Sentient Beings quotes by Charles Darwin
Those who greatly enlighten delusion are buddhas; those who are greatly deluded about enlightenment are sentient beings. ~ Kim Hee-jin
Sentient Beings quotes by Kim Hee-jin
When we finally know we are dying, and all other sentient beings are dying with us, we start to have a burning, almost heartbreaking sense of the fragility and preciousness of each moment and each being, and from this can grow a deep, clear, limitless compassion for all beings. ~ Sogyal Rinpoche
Sentient Beings quotes by Sogyal Rinpoche
But the destruction of any starship was a shocking thing to witness. Resilient and ferocious as they might appear, she was keenly conscious of the fragile life-forms protected by the hulls and armaments. Those weren't just ships exploding before her eyes. They were sentient beings, each of whom had families, friends, hopes, dreams, lives, until they met with unassailable force and ceased to exist in a brilliant flash of light. ~ Kirsten Beyer
Sentient Beings quotes by Kirsten Beyer
I have argued that this sort of thinking is problematic in at least two regards:

First, the notion that nonhuman animals do not have an interest in continued existence - that they do not have an interest in their lives - involves relying on a speciesist concept of what sort of self-awareness matters morally. I have argued that every sentient being necessarily has an interest in continued existence - every sentient being values her or his life - and that to say that only those animals (human animals) who have a particular sort of self-awareness have an interest in not being treated as commodities begs the fundamental moral question. Even if, as some maintain, nonhuman animals live in an "eternal present" - and I think that is empirically not the case at the very least for most of the nonhumans we routinely exploit who do have memories of the past and a sense of the future - they have, in each moment, an interest in continuing to exist. To say that this does not count morally is simply speciesist.

Second, even if animals do not have an interest in continuing to live and only have interests in not suffering, the notion that, as a practical matter, we will ever be able to accord those interests the morally required weight is simply fantasy. The notion that we property owners are ever going to accord any sort of significant weight to the interests of property in not suffering is simply unrealistic. Is it possible in theory? Yes. Is it possible as a matter of ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
I realized that all animals, not just dogs and cats and horses, were sentient beings; therefore, I just couldn't say I love animals and then eat them. ~ William McNamara
Sentient Beings quotes by William McNamara
Civilization is very fragile, all it takes is a few decades of chaos for us to forget humanity and turn into animals. Our base natures can take over very fast. We can forget that we are sentient beings, with laws and codes and ethics. ~ Amish Tripathi
Sentient Beings quotes by Amish Tripathi
Fundamental security comes from realizing that you have broken through something. You reflect back and realize that you used to be extraordinarily paranoid and neurotic, watching each step you made, thinking you might lose your sanity, that situations were always threatening in some way. Now you are free of all those fears and preconceptions. You discover that you have something to give rather than having to demand from others, having to grasp all the time. For the first time, you are a rich person, you contain basic sanity. You have something to offer, you are able to work with your fellow sentient beings, you do not have to reassure yourself anymore. Reassurance implies a mentality of poverty--you are checking yourself, "Do I have it? How could I do it?" But the bodhisattva's delight in his richness is based upon experience rather than theory or wishful thinking. It is so, directly, fundamentally. He is fundamentally rich and so can delight in generosity. ~ Chogyam Trungpa
Sentient Beings quotes by Chogyam Trungpa
For modern science, at least from a philosophical point of view, the critical divide seems to be between inanimate matter and the origin of living organisms, while for Buddhism the critical divide is between non-sentient matter and the emergence of sentient beings. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
THE INNER BUDDHA As Jigme Lingpa said, the moon has all the qualities necessary for its reflection to appear on the surface of a clear lake. If the moon did not have a shape or substance, and if it didn't reflect the light of the sun, it would not be possible for it to appear on the water's surface. Furthermore, the quality of clear water is that it can reflect, and when the moon and the water - two entirely separate entities - are perfectly aligned without any obstruction between them, a reflection of the moon will appear effortlessly, without intention. Similarly, our inner Buddha has qualities that enable it to manifest effortlessly and without intention. When there are no obstacles, the Buddha will reflect spontaneously in sentient beings who have the merit. Some ~ Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse
Sentient Beings quotes by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse
Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture, or kill any creature or living being. ~ Mahavira
Sentient Beings quotes by Mahavira
All sentient beings developed through natural selection in such a way that pleasant sensations serve as their guide, and especially the pleasure derived from sociability and from loving our families. - Charles Darwin ~ Rick Hanson
Sentient Beings quotes by Rick Hanson
Even if I have to do it alone, I will free all sentient beings from suffering and the causes of suffering, and set all sentient beings in happiness and its causes. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
The crucial task of old age is balance: keeping just well enough, just brave enough, just gay and interested and starkly honest enough to remain a sentient human being. ~ Florida Scott-Maxwell
Sentient Beings quotes by Florida Scott-Maxwell
It's not that there are no differences between human and non-human animals, any more than there are no differences between black people and white people, freeborn citizens and slaves, men and women, Jews and gentiles, gays or heterosexuals. The question is rather: are they morally relevant differences? This matters because morally catastrophic consequences can ensue when we latch on to a real but morally irrelevant difference between sentient beings. ~ David Pearce
Sentient Beings quotes by David Pearce
Has 'crunk' achieved true word status yet? Are we there yet, as a race of sentient beings? ~ Hannah Johnson
Sentient Beings quotes by Hannah Johnson
If all sentient beings in the universe disappeared, there would remain a sense in which mathematical objects and theorems would continue to exist even though there would be no one around to write or talk about them. Huge prime numbers would continue to be prime, even if no one had proved them prime. ~ Martin Gardner
Sentient Beings quotes by Martin Gardner
We are all given a gift of existence and of being sentient beings, and I think true happiness lies in love and compassion. ~ Adam Pascal
Sentient Beings quotes by Adam Pascal
Refraining from all evil, not clinging to birth and death, working in deep compassion for all sentient beings, respecting those over you and pitying those below you, without any detesting or desiring, worrying or lamentation - this is what is called Buddha. Do not search beyond it. ~ Dogen
Sentient Beings quotes by Dogen
All sentient beings have the seed of the Buddha within them. ~ Dalai Lama
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama
Without reverence we [people] will gradually descend into ecocide. In the degree that the imperatives of the market - the temple of the Mall - govern our lives, we are in escalating danger of destroying the commonwealth of all sentient beings - bugs and bees and buntings - on which we depend for a luxurious life on planet earth. ~ Sam Keen
Sentient Beings quotes by Sam Keen
As long as we're in a state of confusion, overwhelmed by the three conflicting emotions, trapped in cyclic existence, we're not happy and we can't benefit sentient beings. Even though we think we might be benefitting them, ultimately we're not. The only way to really be of benefit, to ourselves and others, is to establish the status of buddha. There's nothing better than this. But until we purify our unwholesome karma, especially that of the body, there's no buddha - the buddha will not exist for us. ~ Ngagpa Yeshe Dorje
Sentient Beings quotes by Ngagpa Yeshe Dorje
The Buddha's teaching leads us to the realization that we must always strive to harm no sentient being, human or nonhuman, whether or not it is in our selfish interest to do so. ~ Norm Phelps
Sentient Beings quotes by Norm Phelps
We should reflect on the idea that since the beginning of time sentient beings have been mentally unstable because they have been slaves of delusion, they lack the eye of wisdom to see the path leading to nirvana and enlightenment, and they lack the necessary guidance of a spiritual teacher. Moment by moment they are indulging in negative actions, which will eventually bring about their downfall. ~ Dalai Lama
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama
There is a simple way to become buddha: When you refrain from unwholesome actions, are not attached to birth and death, and are compassionate toward all sentient beings, respectful to seniors and kind to juniors, not excluding or desiring anything, with no designing thoughts or worries, you will be called a buddha. Do not seek anything else. ~ Dogen
Sentient Beings quotes by Dogen
Clarissa will be bereaved, deeply lonely, but she will not die. She will be too much in love with life, with London. Virginia imagines someone else, yes, someone strong of body but frail-minded; someone with a touch of genius, of poetry, ground under by the wheels of the world, by war and government, by doctors; a someone who is, technically speaking insane, because that person sees meaning everywhere, knows that trees are sentient beings and sparrows sing in Greek. Yes, someone like that. Clarissa, sane Clarissa -exultant, ordinary Clarissa - will go on, loving London, loving her life of ordinary pleasures, and someone else, a deranged poet, a visonary, will be the one to die. ~ Michael Cunningham
Sentient Beings quotes by Michael Cunningham
Just as you have the instinctive natural desire to be happy and overcome suffering, so do all sentient beings; just as you have the right to fulfill this innate aspiration, so do all sentient beings. So on what exact grounds do you discriminate? ~ Dalai Lama
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama
If you can, serve other people, other sentient beings. If not, at least refrain from harming them. I think that is the whole basis of my philosophy. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Our sense of self, formulated in large part by the untold number of cross-related connections that we make with our physical, social, and family environments, is reliant upon fitting into our social fabric. The educational environment, family relationships, peer groups, books, television, films, music, along with an assortment of other cultural events shape our emergent persona. Our successes and failures interacting in the world leave their collective imprint upon the wet clay of our forming brains. We are sentimental creatures who cling to past memories. We are inquisitive critters who venture forth from our protective dens to explore new territory. We are perceptive organisms equipped with five basic senses. We are sentient beings who can consciously organize our sense impressions into guiding ideas and useful principles. Our survival responses form a central cord of our emotions. We are receptive, compassionate beings that respond with both body and mind to global stimuli. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Sentient Beings quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
When? At this time, while you have all the opportunities, if you do not do your best to achieve the pure, stainless path to enlightenment when will you do it? If you don't meditate, don't practise the graduated path to enlightenment, especially bodhicitta, in this life, then when? When will you practise? When will you have this realization? If, in this life, you don't achieve renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata, as well as the two stages of tantra, when will you? When will you have these attainments? When will you become enlightened? When will you perform perfect work for sentient beings? ~ Thubten Zopa Rinpoche
Sentient Beings quotes by Thubten Zopa Rinpoche
All sentient beings should have at least one right - the right not to be treated as property ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of inner peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion and elimination of ignorance, selfishness and greed. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Technology is the means by which we have decommissioned natural selection and are seizing control. We are no longer to be victims of some blind evolutionary process where sentient beings are massacred by entropy. ~ Jason Silva
Sentient Beings quotes by Jason Silva
This in the context of turning the mind away from samsara, but this doesn't mean against samsara, it is for samsara. Because, what would be the best thing for all sentient beings in samsara? The best thing would be to have a Buddha to guide one, and each one of us wishes to be that Buddha. In ~ Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa
Sentient Beings quotes by Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa
The Buddha and all sentient beings are not two. ~ Takuan Soho
Sentient Beings quotes by Takuan Soho
A lot of people who read my novel 'Smog City' ask me why I never killed off either of the two main characters. To be honest, it's because I've given them life. Not literally of course, but since I spent so much time developing and creating my characters, they've ended up with complex personalities, in fact they're almost sentient in a way, and to write them off as dead would be like killing a close friend to me. ~ Rebecca McNutt
Sentient Beings quotes by Rebecca McNutt
sentient beings; that she had the karma to unite method and wisdom and benefit beings with him. ~ Thekchok Dorje
Sentient Beings quotes by Thekchok Dorje
Leland Lewis all sentient Beings are now present for the prophesized great planet wide transition ~ Leland Lewis
Sentient Beings quotes by Leland Lewis
As long as the sky exists And as long as there are sentient beings, May I remain to help Relieve them of all their pain. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
There is no moral distinction between fur and other materials made from animals, such as leather, which also is the result of the suffering and death of sentient beings. ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
We should have a bond of sympathy for all sentient beings, knowing that only the depraved and base take pleasure in the sight of blood and suffering. ~ Seneca The Younger
Sentient Beings quotes by Seneca The Younger
I pray for all of us, oppressor and friend,
that together we may succeed in building a better world
through human understanding and love,
and that in doing so we may reduce
the pain and suffering of all sentient beings. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Such altruism, generated in the seclusion of one's own thoughts, becomes a subtle means of evading concrete inter-personal responsibility and of justifying to oneself a life of peaceful uninvolved isolation from others. We proclaim to ourselves our love and compassion for such abstract entities as 'humanity' or 'all sentient beings' in order to avoid having to love any one person. ~ Stephen Batchelor
Sentient Beings quotes by Stephen Batchelor
For all of us with consciousness" - the Dalai Lama returned to his seat - "our life is very precious. Therefore, we need to protect all sentient beings very much. Also, we must recognize that we share the same two basic wishes: the wish to enjoy happiness and the wish to avoid suffering." These ~ David Michie
Sentient Beings quotes by David Michie
We should be able to refuse to live if the price of living be the torture of sentient beings. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Sentient Beings quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
When we are distracted by a strong emotion, do we remember that it is part of our path? Can we feel the emotion and breathe it into our hearts for ourselves and everyone else? If we can remember to experiment like this even occasionally, we are training as a warrior. And when we can't practice when distracted but know that we can't, we are still training well. Never underestimate the power of compassionately recognizing what's going on. 51 Deepening Tonglen IN TONGLEN, after genuinely connecting with the pain and your ability to open and let go, then take the practice a step further and do it for all sentient beings. ~ Pema Chodron
Sentient Beings quotes by Pema Chodron
In fact, in one sense one could define compassion as the feeling of unbearableness at the sight of other people's suffering, other sentient beings' suffering. And in order to generate that feeling one must first have an appreciation of the seriousness or intensity of another's suffering. So, I think that the more fully one understands suffering, and the various kinds of suffering that we are subject to, the deeper will be one's level of compassion. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Children don't read 'genres'; they read stories. Below a certain age, they don't distinguish between 'true' and 'not true,' because they see no reason that a white rabbit shouldn't possess a pocket watch, that whales shouldn't talk, or that sentient beings shouldn't live on other planets and travel in spaceships. Science-fiction tropes aren't read as 'science fiction'; they're read as fiction. And fiction is read as reality. And sometimes reality lives under the bed and has very large teeth, and it's no use pretending otherwise. ~ Margaret Atwood
Sentient Beings quotes by Margaret Atwood
Be willing to familiarize yourself with this attitude, taking on yourself the burden of protecting all sentient beings from all problems; do it repeatedly and with regular analysis. Your empathy will be so great that it will suffuse your entire being. Without any desire for reward, your aim will be solely the development of others, never disheartened or discouraged in your task. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
When I wash my feet May all sentient beings Attain the power of supernatural feet With no hindrance to their practice. Of ~ Ruth Ozeki
Sentient Beings quotes by Ruth Ozeki
So long as space remains, So long sentient beings' suffering remain, I will remain, In order to help, in order to serve ... I am nothing but a servant to provide to others. So if you provide some happiness, some comfort to others, then your life becomes meaningful. If your life creates problems or suffering to others, then there's no meaning to your existence. ~ Dalai Lama
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama
Han: "Someone ought to make armor out of those bugs."
Leia: "Han! They're sentient beings!"
Han: "Fair is fair. If they get to wear it, so should we."
- Han and Leia Solo ~ Troy Denning
Sentient Beings quotes by Troy Denning
I am not well-versed in theory, but in my view, the cow deserves her life. As does the ram. As does the ladybug. As does the elephant. As do the fish, and the dog and the bee; as do other sentient beings. I will always be in favor of veganism as a minimum because I believe that sentient beings have a right not to be used as someone else's property. They ask us to be brave for them, to be clear for them, and I see no other acceptable choice but to advocate veganism. If these statements make me a fundamentalist, then I will sew a scarlet F on my jacket so that all may know I'm fundamentally in favor of nonviolence; may they bury me in it so that all will know where I stood. ~ Vincent J. Guihan
Sentient Beings quotes by Vincent J. Guihan
Compassion is a mind that focuses on the sentient beings that are miserable and wishes them to be free from suffering. Compassion can be of three types, depending on the aspect of wisdom that accompanies it. These three are: compassion focused on sentient beings, compassion focused on phenomena, and compassion focused on the unapprehendable. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
When we use love and compassion as our guiding principles we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and to the environment. ~ Joaquin Phoenix
Sentient Beings quotes by Joaquin Phoenix
Now that we have understood the nature of speciesism and seen the consequences it has for nonhuman animals it is time to ask: What can we do about it? There are many things that we can and should do about speciesism. We should, for instance, write to our political representatives about the issues discussed in this book; we should make our friends aware of these issues; we should educate our children to be concerned about the welfare of all sentient beings; and we should protest publicly on behalf of nonhuman animals whenever we have an effective opportunity to do so. While ~ Peter Singer
Sentient Beings quotes by Peter Singer
Through true honestydeeply believethat all sentient-beings are one. That all beings have the sametrue nature, wisdom, virtue. ~ Gautama Buddha
Sentient Beings quotes by Gautama Buddha
[A]ccording to Buddhism in the Tibetan tradition, a being that achieves Buddhahood, although freed from Samsara, the 'wheel of suffering', as the phenomenon of existence is known, will continue to return to work for the benefit of all other sentient beings until such time as each one is similarly liberated. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
I have never really been fond of animals. I certainly wasn't an 'animal lover' when I became involved in the movement. I just came to be persuaded that animals should be treated as independent sentient beings, not as means to human ends. ~ Peter Singer
Sentient Beings quotes by Peter Singer
Sam Hamill is a writer unabashedly taking his place within the community of literature and the community of all sentient beings-his fidelity is to the magnificent truth of existence, and to its commensurate singing. ~ Jane Hirshfield
Sentient Beings quotes by Jane Hirshfield
If you see the intersection of time and space, you experience complete freedom of being. This state of existence is completely beyond any idea of time, space, or being. In that liberated state you can see fundamental truth and the phenomenal world simultaneously. That is called Buddha's world. That is the place where all sentient beings exist, so you can stand up there and see all beings, myriad beings. Then you know very clearly, through your own emotional and intellectual understanding, how all beings exist. ~ Dainin Katagiri
Sentient Beings quotes by Dainin Katagiri
When you open the door and invite in all sentient beings as your guests, you have to drop your agenda. ~ Pema Chodron
Sentient Beings quotes by Pema Chodron
Consciousness is part of our nature as sentient beings, but doesn't mean we are aware at a particular moment. By perceiving our consciousness - becoming conscious of consciousness, we become aware. ~ Ilchi Lee
Sentient Beings quotes by Ilchi Lee
One common strategy on which we should all be able to agree is to take steps to reduce the risk of human extinction when those steps are also highly effective in benefiting existing sentient beings. For example, eliminating or decreasing the consumption of animal products will benefit animals, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lessen the chances of a pandemic resulting from a virus evolving among the animals crowded into today's factory farms, which are an ideal breeding ground for viruses. That therefore looks like a high-priority strategy. Other ~ Peter Singer
Sentient Beings quotes by Peter Singer
The idea that we have the right to inflict suffering and death on other sentient beings for the trivial reasons of palate pleasure and fashion is, without doubt, one of the most arrogant and morally repugnant notions in the history of human thought. ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
There is little that separates humans from other sentient beings - we all feel joy, we all deeply crave to be alive and to live freely, and we all share this planet together. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Sentient Beings quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
As for my own religious practice, I try to live my life pursuing what I call the Bodhisattva ideal. According to Buddhist thought, a Bodhisattva is someone on the path to Buddhahood wo dedicates themselves entirely to helping all other sentient beings towards release from suffering. The word Bodhisattva can best be understood by translating the Bodhi and Sattva separately: Bodhi means the understanding or wisdom of the ultimate nature of reality, and a Sattva is someone who is motivated by universal compassion. The Bodhissatva ideal is thus the aspiration to practise infinite compassion with infinite wisdom. releasing sentient beings from suffering. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient beings, self and others, enemies and dear ones-all are made by thoughts. It is like seeing a rope and mistaking it for a snake. When we think that the rope is a snake, we are scared, but once we see that we are looking at a rope, our fear dissipates. We have been deluded by our thoughts. Likewise, mentally fabricating self and others, we generate attachment and aversion. ~ Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
Sentient Beings quotes by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
The misery we inflict on sentient beings slackens our human evolution. ~ Annie Besant
Sentient Beings quotes by Annie Besant
1. Earth, birthplace of the human race, a species much like our own, capable of great compation, and great violence. For in our quest to protect the humans, a deeper revelation dawns, our worlds have met before.

2. Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.

3. I am Optimus Prime, leader of the autobots.

4. We hunt for what remains our decepticon foes hiding in different countries around the globe. ~ Optimus Prime
Sentient Beings quotes by Optimus Prime
Having abandoned the taking of life, refraining from killing, we dwell without violence, with the knife laid down, scrupulous, full of mercy, trembling with compassion for all sentient beings. ~ Gautama Buddha
Sentient Beings quotes by Gautama Buddha
Music is intended and designed for sentient beings that have hopes and purposes and emotions. ~ Jacques Barzun
Sentient Beings quotes by Jacques Barzun
We know there exists a planet with four thousand different versions of songbirds. Because that is possible and because on that same planet can exist sentient beings made up almost entirely of stardust, and because bonafide poetry erupts mightily from some of those beings, and there is music, sex, and babies that laugh in their sleep; because we are roaming a universe that may be a hologram, with another dimension consecutively projecting itself outside this construct of reality and gravity; because of all that, there is no reason why my prayers shouldn't be able to reach your mother whose name I don't even know. ~ Mary-Louise Parker
Sentient Beings quotes by Mary-Louise Parker
Contrary to what many may think, immortality is not a fairy tale invented to compensate for an unhappy life. Rather, it is the perception shared by nearly all sentient beings that our conscious lives are not bounded by this time and space. We are not merely lumps of animate matter. We are living spirits - we all feel this innately. And in our deepest hearts, we know that we can only find ultimate fulfilment in union with the supreme spiritual reality - a reality that appears, even during this earthly life, to take us beyond the narrow limits of time. ~ Stephen R. Lawhead
Sentient Beings quotes by Stephen R. Lawhead
But science, dominated by the spirit of religion is the key to progress and the hope of the future. For example, evolution's beautiful theory of the creation of the world offers many perplexing problems to the inquiring mind. Inevitably, a teacher who denies divine agency in creation, who insists there is no intelligent purpose in it, will infest the student with the thought that all may be chance. I say, that no youth should be so led without a counter balancing though. Even the skeptic teacher should be fair enough to see that even Charles Darwin, when he faced this great question of annihilation, that the creation is dominated only by chance wrote: "It is an intolerable thought than man and all other sentient beings are doomed to complete annihilation after such long, continued slow progress." And another good authority, Raymond West, said, "Why this vast [expenditure] of time and pain and blood?" Why should man come so far if he's destined to go no farther? A creature that travels such distances and fought such battles and won such victories deserves what we are compelled to say, "To conquer death and rob the grave of its victory. ~ David O McKay
Sentient Beings quotes by David O McKay
One student asks: Why should I live?

Steven Pinker answers: In the very act of asking that question, you are seeking reasons for your convictions, and so you are committed to reason as the means to discover and justify what is important to you. And there are so many reasons to live! As a sentient being, you have the potential to flourish. You can refine your faculty of reason itself by learning and debating. You can seek explanations of the natural world through science, and insight into the human condition through the arts and humanities. You can make the most of your capacity for pleasure and satisfaction, which allowed your ancestors to thrive and thereby allowed you to exist. You can appreciate the beauty and richness of the natural and cultural world. As the heir to billions of years of life perpetuating itself, you can perpetuate life in turn. You have been endowed with a sense of sympathy - the ability to like, love, respect, help, and show kindness - and you can enjoy the gift of mutual benevolence with friends, family, and colleagues. And because reason tells you that none of this is particular to you, you have the responsibility to provide to others what you expect for yourself. You can foster the welfare of other sentient beings by enhancing life, health, knowledge, freedom, abundance, safety, beauty, and peace. History shows that when we sympathize with others and apply our ingenuity to improving the human condition, we can make progress in doing so, a ~ Steven Pinker
Sentient Beings quotes by Steven Pinker
The writer of these lines has nothing whatsoever to teach anyone; his words are just his contribution to our common discussion of what must inevitably be for us the most important subject which could be discussed by sentient beings. ~ Wei Wu Wei
Sentient Beings quotes by Wei Wu Wei
Veganism is about nonviolence:
nonviolence to other sentient beings;
nonviolence to yourself;
nonviolence to the earth. ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
You could consider the idea of the multiverse, and think of it as something like a tree - that is, the universe we live in is one of an uncountable number of branches of possible universes, created by random chance and the decisions of sentient beings. So, for instance, when I rang you up in the morning, there was a possible future universe in which you answered the phone, and another in which you did not, and by answering the phone you put us in one universe and not the other. In that instance the time traveler doesn't just move from the future to the past and back to the future: he moves down one branch of the universe, toward the root that's back at the beginning of time, and back up another branch. ~ Dexter Palmer
Sentient Beings quotes by Dexter Palmer
For the moment I can think of nothing - except that I am a sentient being stabbed by the miracle of these waters that reflect a forgotten world. ~ Henry Miller
Sentient Beings quotes by Henry Miller
We and all sentient beings fundamentally have the buddha nature as our innermost essence ... ~ Sogyal Rinpoche
Sentient Beings quotes by Sogyal Rinpoche
My advice for people is to love the world they are in, in whatever way makes sense to them. It may be a devotional practice, it may be song or poetry, it may be by gardening, it may be as an activist, scientist, or community leader. The path to restoration extends from our heart to the heart of sentient beings, and that path will be different for every person. ~ Paul Hawken
Sentient Beings quotes by Paul Hawken
Every sentient being values her/his life even if no one else does. That is what is meant by saying that the lives of all have inherent value. ~ Gary L. Francione
Sentient Beings quotes by Gary L. Francione
No true search for enlightenment ignores the suffering of other sentient beings. Ever. We simply need to create a way to address that suffering while remaining in a blissful center. ~ Marianne Williamson
Sentient Beings quotes by Marianne Williamson
All suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their own happiness or satisfaction ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Sentient Beings quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
There is no place which is not imbued with the Way. It pervades all things and all sentient beings. ~ Ta-Mo
Sentient Beings quotes by Ta-Mo
When there is hallucination, there is the truth, by recognising it as hallucination. Where there is suffering, there is peace and bliss, by letting go and experiencing it for numberless suffering sentient beings. Always think of how others are kind and precious Treat them as you would like to be treated. ~ Thubten Zopa Rinpoche
Sentient Beings quotes by Thubten Zopa Rinpoche
I'm hoping what all sentient beings hope ... that somehow I'm part of something larger than myself, in which I play a role, an actual role that is somehow intended and meaningful. ~ Anne Rice
Sentient Beings quotes by Anne Rice
The true miracle lies in our eagerness to allow, appreciate, and honor the uniqueness, and freedom of each sentient being to sing the song of their heart. ~ Amit Ray
