This play is dedicated to the memory of Clarence Darrow, The Great Defender, whose mental frontiers were the four corners of the sky. ~ Tennessee Williams
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Tennessee Williams
There is no social life outside of Christendom. ~ William H. Seward
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by William H. Seward
Bohemians.

These Bohemians, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Williams, and their seven children, Biff, Tina, Sparky, Louise, Tuffy, Mickey, and Biff Number Two, lived in a notorious artist's colony and planned community.

Naturally, the bohemian's existence thrived on creativity. Early in the morning, Mrs. Williams would rise and create breakfast. Then, Mr. Williams, inspired by his wife's limitless energy, would rush off to a special room and create tiny hairs in a sink. The children would create things, too. But being temperamental artists, they would often flush them away without a second thought.

But the bohemians' creativity didn't stop there. Mr. Williams would then rush off downtown and create reams and reams of papers with numbers on them and send them out to other Bohemians who would create special checks to send to him with figures like $7.27written on them.

At home, the children would be creating unusual music, using only their voices to combine in avant-garde, atonal melodies.

Yes, these were the bohemians. A seething hot-bed of rebellion-the artists, the creators of all things that lie between good and bad. ~ Steve Martin
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Steve Martin
I am simply an agnostic. I haven't yet had time or opportunity to explore the universe, and I don't know what I might run on to in some nook or corner. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Government cannot make us equal; it can only recognize, respect, and protect us as equal before the law. That [affirmative action] programs may have been motivated, in part, by good intentions cannot provide refuge from the principle that under our Constitution, the government may not make distinctions on the basis of race. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
We stay in U2's hotel. They bought a hotel, The Clarence, a nice place and it's in an area where everything's happening, so many fantastic restaurants and bars and the people are so friendly. ~ Bonnie Tyler
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Bonnie Tyler
I think Juan stopped short - he got halfway to the destination and got off the train. He is certainly an excellent writer and a good person, but I'm not a nationalist. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
From the end of the bar, the bartender threw a sidelong look at him, so Clarence pulled out a broken Bluetooth headset and fixed it to his ear.
"I learned this trick while traveling with Mikey," Clarence told Nick. "Makes my brand of crazy the same as everyone else's. ~ Neal Shusterman
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Neal Shusterman
The first half of our lives are ruined by our parents and the second half by our children. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Everyone is the heir to all that has gone before; his structure and emotional life is fixed, and no two children of nature have the same heredity. I believe everyone should and must live out what is in him. So no two lives can be the same. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
DEATH

Why do you fear me?
I am your friend.
I but guide trav'lers
Rounding the bend ---
Lead them to freedom
From time and age,
Help them start writing a new page...

Seek for me never,
Keep your course true ---
When I am needed
I'll come to you,
Then I will show you
Roads without end ---
Why do you fear me?
I am your friend. ~ Clarence E. Flynn
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence E. Flynn
I have suffered from being misunderstood, but I would have suffered a hell of a lot more if I had been understood. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Sevro." I lean forward. "Your eyes ... "
He leans in close. "Do you like 'em?"
"Bloodydamn. Did you get Carved?"
"By the best in the business. Do you like 'em?"
"They're bloodydamn marvelous. Fit you like a glove."
He punches his hands together. "Glad you said that. Cuz they're yours."
I blanch. "What?"
"They're yours."
"My what?"
"Your eyes!"
"My eyes ... "
"Do you want the eyes back?" Sevro asks, suddenly worried. "I can give them back."
"No!" I say. "It's just I forgot how crazy you are."
"Oh." He laughs and slaps my shoulder. "Good. I thought it might be something serious. So I'm prime keeping them?"
"Finders keepers," I say with a shrug. ~ Pierce Brown
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Pierce Brown
Throughout the history of the Deutschritter the German genius is very evident, romantic idealism implemented with utter ruthlessness. ~ Desmond Seward
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Desmond Seward
Freedom comes from human beings, rather than from laws and institutions. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Since I was forty and definitely slipping, I have won seven full marathons, got second six times, and third four times ... I'm wondering what I can do after I'm fifty. ~ Clarence DeMar
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence DeMar
We came," Manon said, loud enough that all on the city walls could hear, "to honor a promise made to Aelin Galathynius. To fight for what she promised us."
Darrow said quietly, "And what was that?"
Manon smiled then. "A better world. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Sarah J. Maas
Celtic fans are some of the greatest supporters I know. ~ Clarence Seedorf
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Seedorf
I got plenty of cautions that one or two of these marathons was all a man should do in a lifetime. ~ Clarence DeMar
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence DeMar
It is indeed strange that with all the knowledge we have gained in the past hundred years we preserve and practice the methods of an ancient and barbarous world in our dealing with crime. So long as this is observed and exercised there can be no change except to heap more cruelties and more wretchedness upon those who are the victims of our foolish system. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Every month when the bills came in, there was trouble. Mother seemed to have no great extravagances. But she loved pretty things. She had a passion for china, for instance. She saw hundreds of beautiful cups and saucers that it was hard to walk away from and leave. She knew she couldn't buy them, and mustn't, but every so often she did. No one purchase seemed large by itself, but they kept mounting up, and Father declared that she bought more china than the Windsor Hotel. ~ Clarence Day Jr.
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Day Jr.
When you look at where the real problems are among minorities in our society, particularly blacks, it's at the bottom. It's the people who are in school systems that don't educate, neighborhoods where there is a lot of crime, drugs, the whole bit. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
The purpose of man is like the purpose of a pollywog - to wiggle along as far as he can without dying; or, to hang to life until death takes him. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
You can only be free if I am free. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
On the eve of the wedding, which Diana spent at Clarence House, her mood was much improved when Charles sent her a signet ring engraved with the Prince of Wales feathers and an affectionate card which said: "I'm so proud of you and when you come up I'll be there at the altar for you tomorrow. Just look 'em in the eye and knock 'em dead. ~ Andrew Morton
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Andrew Morton
Religion is based on the insistence that over and above all is a purpose and a guiding hand that is beneficent and kind, and would not leave a hair unnumbered or let a sparrow fall unnoticed to the ground. Those who cherish such hallucinations forget that the all-loving power is inflicting tuberculosis, cancer, famine, and pestilence on the trusting, simple sons of men. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
The origin of the absurd idea of immortal life is easy to discover; it is kept alive by hope and fear, by childish faith, and by cowardice. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
No man is a good citizen, a good neighbor, a good friend, or a good man just because he obeys the law. The intrinsic worth is determined mainly by the intrinsic make-up. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Where did it all begin? These are simple questions, but just as the humid summer air that can be felt but not touched, the answers are elusive. ~ Elmer Seward
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Elmer Seward
The absolute worst I have ever been treated, the worst things that have been done to me, the worst things that have been said about me, are by northern liberal elites, not by the people of Savannah, Georgia. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
Every time you win a cup it's special, but it's a dream come true when it happens at a club where you started in the youth set-up, surrounded by friends who formed an incredible generation of players. ~ Clarence Seedorf
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Seedorf
I could tell...that my friends were doing their best to get across the message that I wasn't Frankenstein's monster but a perfectly normal human being. What they didn't understand was that my opponents didn't care who I was. Even if they had wanted to know the truth about me, it would have made no sense to them, since I refused to stay in my place and play by their rules and was too complicated to fit into their simple-minded, stereotypical pigeonholes. In any case, I couldn't be defeated without first being caricatured and dehumanized...[T]hey couldn't allow my life to be seen as the story of an ordinary person who, like most people, had worked out his problems step by unsure step. That would have been too honest-and too human. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
Darrow: "Does he really believe believe in magic?" I ask.
Daxo Au Telemanus: "He says gnomes steals ear wax from him at night. Mother thinks he's been hit too many times in the head." Daxo backs away following his father. But he can't hide the his clever smile as he pops a jellybean into his mouth. And I see where the ones in my pocket came from. "I say he just lives in a more entertaining world than we do. ~ Pierce Brown
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Pierce Brown
In 1990, I was in 'The Three Sisters' at the Royal Court and won the Clarence Derwent award for my supporting role as Natasha - the prize was £100. I could have paid the gas bill, but I ended up buying a porcelain and silver Bavarian coffee set in an antiques shop in Penzance. ~ Lesley Manville
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Lesley Manville
Most jury trials are contests between the rich and poor. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
I disagree with the prevailing point of view of some black leaders that special treatment for blacks is acceptable. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
The only people who have quick answers don't have the responsibility of making the decisions. ~ Clarence Thomas
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Thomas
The criminals who, in the face of contumely, hatred or violence, have led the world to a higher standard and brought humanity to a diviner order, have so loved truth and righteousness as to defy the law, and in every age these men have met the life of outcasts, and the death of felons. Whatever may be said of the necessity of government to protect itself, no one can believe that any human being merits punishment for following his own highest ideal. Punishment can only be in any wise defended upon the theory that the individual is untrue to himself, that his heart is bad. But all schemes of human punishment seem specially contrived to exempt this class of men. Those who are untrue to themselves find no difficulty in obeying the state, or at least in seeming to be subservient to its laws. The cunning man without strong convictions of right and wrong can always find ample room to operate his trade inside the dead line the law lays down. Even Blackstone wrote that a man who governed his conduct solely by the law was neither an honest man nor a good citizen. The penal code cannot pretend to cover all the vicious acts of men. If there is a distinction between vicious acts and righteous acts, each are so numerous that even to catalogue them would be beyond the power of the state. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Does man Progress? A thousand questions answered yesterday create a thousand questions today. ~ Clarence H. Burns
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence H. Burns
I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
Alas, by what rude fate Our lives, like ships at sea, an instant meet, Then part forever on their courses fleet. ~ Edmund Clarence Stedman
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Edmund Clarence Stedman
One of my basic feelings is that the mind, and the heart alike, of the photographer must be dedicated to the glory, the magic, and the mystery of light. The mystery of time, the magic of light, the enigma of reality - and their interrelationships - are my constant themes and preoccupations. ~ Clarence John Laughlin
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence John Laughlin
I believe that religion is the belief in future life and in God. I don't believe in either. I don't believe in God as I don't believe in Mother Goose. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
The Bible is to the theologian what nature is to the scientist, a body of unorganized, or only partly organized facts. God has not seen fit to write the Bible in the form of a systematic theology; it remains for us, therefore, to gather together the scattered facts and to build them up into a logical system. ~ Henry Clarence Thiessen
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Henry Clarence Thiessen
Laws have come down to us from old customs and folk-ways based on primitive ideas of man's origin, capacity and responsibility. ~ Clarence Darrow
Clarence Seward Darrow quotes by Clarence Darrow
In July of 1983, I left Washington, DC area and have had minimal contact with Judge Clarence Thomas since. ~ Anita Hill
