At this point, I must describe an important study carried out by Clare W. Graves of Union College, Schenectady, N.Y. on deterioration of work standards. Professor Graves starts from the Maslow-McGregor assumption that work standards deteriorate when people react against workcontrol systems with boredom, inertia, cynicism... A fourteen-year study led to the conclusion that, for practical purposes, we may divide people up into seven groups, seven personality levels, ranging from totally selfpreoccupied and selfish to what Nietzsche called 'a selfrolling wheel'-a thoroughly self-determined person, absorbed in an objective task. This important study might be regarded as an expansion of Shotover's remark that our interest in the world is an overflow of our interest in ourselves - and that therefore nobody can be genuinely 'objective' until they have fully satiated the subjective cravings. What is interesting - and surprising - is that it should not only be possible to distinguish seven clear personality-ypes, but that these can be recognised by any competent industrial psychologist. When Professor Graves's theories were applied in a large manufacturing organisation - and people were slotted into their proper 'levels' - the result was a 17% increase in production and an 87% drop in grumbles.

The seven levels are labelled as follows:

(1) Autistic
(2) Animistic
(3) Awakening and fright
(4) Aggressive power seeking
(5) Sociocentric
(6) Ag ~ Colin Wilson
Clare Graves quotes by Colin Wilson
When I first arrived in London, I so quickly tired of being surrounded by so many people that it was only with great difficulty that I refrained from seizing the next unfortunate who crossed my path and committing violent acts upon their person. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
I have to figure out who I am before I can accept that I'm someone who deserves someone like you. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Only the Great Poison, he who is handsome and wise and charming and handsome, can lead the faithful to Edom. So cater to the Great Poison with food and drink and baths and the occasional massage.
"They wrote 'handsome' twice," murmured Alec.
"Why is it called the Red Scrolls," said Shiyun, "when it is a book? And not a scroll?"
"It's definitely not plural scrolls," said Alec.
"I'm sure whoever this handsome, handsome cult founder is," said Magnus, his chest constricting, "he had his reasons."
Shinyun read on. "The prince wishes only the best for his children. Thus, to honor his name, there must be a hearth crowded with only the finest of liquors and cigars and bonbons. Tithes of treasure and gifts showered upon the Great Poison symbolize the love between the faithful, so keep the spirits flowing and the gold growing, and always remember the sacred roles.
"Life is a stage, so exit in style.
"Only the faithful who make a truly great drink shall be favored.
"Offend not the Great Poison with cruel deeds or poor fashion.
"Seek the children of demons. Love them as you love your lord. Do not let the children be alone.
"In times of trouble, remember: all roads lead to Rome."
Alec looked at Magnus, and Magnus could not entirely understand Alec's small smile. "I think you wrote this. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Being sixteen forever sounded good until you really thought about it. Then it didn't seem like such a great prospect. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
For now the world keeps turning and I keep breathing, in and out, in and out. I breathe in the life that is all around me, in this garden, in this city, in the fields beyond it, in the seas beyond them and the shores on the other side; life that reaches out towards the unreachable, unknowable space that is beyond all of us and the stars that burn there. ~ Clare Furniss
Clare Graves quotes by Clare Furniss
Life is detours, collisions. ~ Robert C.J. Graves
Clare Graves quotes by Robert C.J. Graves
He was looking up at the sky, where a pale crescent of moon darted in between thick sweeps of cloud and fog. Flakes of white snow had fallen and mixed with his black hair. His cheeks and lips were flushed with the cold. He looked more handsome than she had ever remembered him. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
What is a book? Is it the binding, the ink, the pages, or the sum of the words contained? ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
The two are now bound inextricably. Should one die, the other will follow. No wepon in this world can wound only one of them ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
What's different about you? Why does it make you a pussy if you get help, but not the rest of the team? Oh, I get it. You're the Cobra. You get within striking distance of the enemy, and it's over. But if it all goes sideways and the wrong men die, you don't need help like the rest of us mere mortals. ~ Pamela Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Pamela Clare
I'm fine little sister. The flames won't burn me unless I try to get my hands free.

Jace ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
It is always better to live the truth than to live a lie. And that lie would have kept him alone forever. He may have had nearly nothing for 5 years, but now he can have everything. A boy who looks like that ... Magnus. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Do you want to go back to Vienna?" he said.
Alec didn't answer, just stared into space.
"Or we could go somewhere else," said Magnus. "Anywhere you want. Thailand, South Carolina, Brazil, Peru – Oh, wait, no, I'm banned from Peru. I'd forgotten about that. It's a long story, but amusing if you want to hear it. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Do people ever climb the demon towers? Like, for any reason?"
Aline looked up. "Climb the demon towers?" She laughed. "No, no one ever does that. It's totally illegal, for one thing, and besides, why would you want to?"
Aline, Isabelle thought, did not have much imagination. She herself could think of lots of reasons why someone might want to climb the demon towers, if only to spit gum down on passerbys below. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Fire tests gold. In this fire we will be tested, and we will shine out. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
No," she said. "I haven't come across anything I particularly wanted to read lately. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
May be you find out I could be useful getting people out of camps and prisons in Germany - just before they got shot. I should love to do it and I like to jump out of a plane even every day. ~ Christine Granville
Clare Graves quotes by Christine Granville
Hate is a fear, and fear is rot That cankers root and fruit alike, Fight cleanly then, hate not, fear not, Strike with no madness when you strike. ~ Robert Graves
Clare Graves quotes by Robert Graves
I'm not really in the mood right now." "That's got to be the first time a girl's ever said that to me," Jace mused. "Stick with me and it won't be the last." The ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Maybe warlocks only liked other warlocks. Though Magnus did seem to like Alec quite a lot. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
In my life are many windows
and many graves.
Sometimes they exchange
roles:
then a window is closed forever,
then by way of a gravestone
I can see
very far.
(Hebrew-to-English translation by Rabbi Steven Sager) ~ Yehuda Amichai
Clare Graves quotes by Yehuda Amichai
Why are there no women in the Wild Hunt?" she asked. It was something she she had always wondered.

"Women are too savage," he said with a grin. "We reap the dead. It was discovered that when Rhiannon's Ladies ran with the Hunt, they were unwilling to wait until the dead were dead. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
When a dream is born in you With a sudden clamorous pain, When you know the dream is true And lovely, with no flaw nor stain, O then, be careful, or with sudden clutch You'll hurt the delicate thing you prize so much. ~ Robert Graves
Clare Graves quotes by Robert Graves
Because Clare had never let the fact that Mark didn't have a father in his life get in the way of sex education. She'd been showing Mark how to roll condoms onto bananas long before he'd known it was other bananas he was interested in. ~ Lisa Henry
Clare Graves quotes by Lisa Henry
No, said Jem, becuase he was always James Carstairs when he spoke of what was dearest to him. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Raphael snapped, "This isn't funny."
"That's why no one's laughing." Jace stood, hauling Raphael upright, jamming the tip of his knife between Raphael's shoulder blades. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
My boyfriend always says that if it weren't for him I'd probably get rid of my apartment and live nowhere, and he's right. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
You want a piece of all this fabulousness?" He gestured to himself. "Well, my best friend comes along with it. I wouldn't cut you out of my life, Clary, any more than I would cut off my right hand and give it to someone as a Valentine's Day gift."
"Gross," said Clary. "Must you?"
He grinned. "I must. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
When Magnus looked at Imasu, he saw Imasu had dropped his head into his hands.
"Er," Magnus said. "Are you quite all right?"
"I was simply overcome," Imasu said in a faint voice.
Magnus preened slightly. "Ah. Well."
"By how awful that was," Imasu said.
Magnus blinked. "Pardon?"
"I can't live a lie any longer!" Imasu burst out. "I have tried to be encouraging. Dignitaries of the town have been sent to me, asking me to plead with you to stop. My own sainted mother begged me, with tears in her eyes - "
"It isn't as bad as all that - "
"Yes, it is!" It was like a dam of musical critique had broken. Imasu turned on him with eyes that flashed instead of shining. "It is worse than you can possibly imagine! When you play, all of my mother's flowers lose the will to live and expire on the instant. The quinoa has no flavor now. The llamas are migrating because of your music, and llamas are not a migratory animal. The children now believe there is a sickly monster, half horse and half large mournful chicken, that lives in the lake and calls out to the world to grant it the sweet release of death. The townspeople believe that you and I are performing arcane magic rituals - "
"Well, that one was rather a good guess," Magnus remarked.
" - using the skull of an elephant, an improbably large mushroom, and one of your very peculiar hats!"
"Or not," said Magnus. "Furthermore, my hats are extraordinary."
"I will not argue with that." I ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Kate had never in her life seen such frightful deformities, and the goblins had never seen such a hideous dress. ~ Clare B. Dunkle
Clare Graves quotes by Clare B. Dunkle
O I never thought that joys would run away from boys,
Or that boys would change their minds and forsake such summer joys;
But alack I never dreamed that the world had other toys ~ John Clare
Clare Graves quotes by John Clare
If you ever meet the man who could take advantage of Isabelle, you'll have to let me know. I'd like to shake his hand. Or run away from him very fast, I'm not sure which. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
I have very few rules in life, but one of them is to never decline an adventure. The others are: to avoid becoming romantically entangled with sea creatures; to always ask for what you want, because the worst thing that can happen is embarrassment but the best thing that can happen is nudity; to demand ready money up front; and to never play cards with Catarina Loss. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
The center line of science literacy - which not many people tell you, but I feel this strongly, and I will go to my grave making this point - is how you think. ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Clare Graves quotes by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Herondales, someone had told her once. They were everything that Shadowhunters had to offer, all in one family: both the best, and the worst. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
I have no requirements for a style of architecture. ~ Michael Graves
Clare Graves quotes by Michael Graves
Father . . . ," Gabriel began. "Father is a worm."
Will gave a short laugh. He was in gear as if he had just come from the practice room, and his hair curled damply against his temples. He was not looking at Tessa, but she had grown used to that. Will hardly ever looked at her unless he had to. "It's good to see you've come round to our view of things, Gabriel, but this is an unusual way of announcing it."
Gideon shot Will a reproachful look before turning back to his brother. "What do you mean, Gabriel? What did Father do?"
Gabriel shook his head. "He's a worm," he said again, tonelessly.
"I know. He has brought shame on the name of Lightwood, and lied to both of us. He shamed and destroyed our mother. But we need not be like him."
Gabriel pulled away from his brother's grip, his teeth suddenly flashing in an angry scowl. "You're not listening to me," he said. "He's a worm. A worm. A bloody great serpentlike thing. Since Mortmain stopped sending the medicine, he's been getting worse. Changing. Those sores upon his arms, they started to cover him. His hands, his neck, h-his face . . ." Gabriel's green eyes sought Will. "It was the pox, wasn't it? You know all about it, don't you? Aren't you some sort of expert?"
"Well, you needn't act as if I invented it," said Will. "Just because I believed it existed. There are accounts of it - old stories in the library - ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
I know that certain minds would regard as audacious the idea of relating the laws which preside over the play of our organs to those laws which govern inanimate bodies; but, although novel, this truth is none the less incontestable. To hold that the phenomena of life are entirely distinct from the general phenomena of nature is to commit a grave error, it is to oppose the continued progress of science. ~ Francois Magendie
Clare Graves quotes by Francois Magendie
(Jace) "Is there anything special you want to see? Paris? Budapest? The Leaning Tower of Pisa?"
Only if it falls on Sebastian's head, she thought. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
The moon was wide - too wide and too close. Mentally, Simon told the moon to stop being so close and bright and that it should just generally shut up with the mooniness. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
Tea. I find that both settles the stomach and concentrates the mind. Wonderful drink, tea. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
I was hoping they would put up flyers like they do for lost cats." He said. "Missing, one stunningly attractive teenage boy. Answers to 'Jace' or 'hotstuff'."
"You did not just say that."
"You don't like 'hotstuff'? You think 'sweet cheeks' might be better? "Love crumpet'? Really? That last one's stretching it a bit. Though, technically my family is British- ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
The front door shut, leaving Alec sitting in the half-lit garden, alone. He closed his eyes for a moment, the image of a face hovering behind his lids. Not Jace's face, for a change. The eyes set in the face were green, slit-pupiled. Cat eyes. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
There are only four points of warmth and brightness, in the whole world, that burn fiercely enough for me to feel something like the person I was. Your mother, your father, Lucie, and you. You love, and tremble, and burn. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
We shove the dirt over the book, tamping down the disturbed soil. The grass will grow back soon enough. It will be for us the beautiful uncut hair of graves. ~ John Green
Clare Graves quotes by John Green
Please," Alec said, pulling out his stele. "I can read your face like a very open, very pornographic book. I wish I couldn't. ~ Cassandra Clare
Clare Graves quotes by Cassandra Clare
She broke into sobs, and turned her back to him. It would almost have won round any man but Angel Clare. Within the remote depths of his constitution, so gentle and affectionate as he was in general, there lay hidden a hard logical deposit, like a vein of metal in a soft loam, which turned the edge of everything that attempted to traverse it. It had blocked his acceptance of the Church; it blocked his acceptance of Tess. Moreover, his affection itself was less fire than radiance, and, with regard to the other sex, when he ceased to believe he ceased to follow: contrasting in this with many impressionable natures, who remain sensuously infatuated with what they intellectually despise. He waited till her sobbing ceased. ~ Thomas Hardy
