Perhaps these men in the House Caucus Room [Committee on Un-American Activities] are determined to spread silence: to frighten those voices which will shout no, and ask questions, defend the few, attack cruelty and proclaim the rights and dignity of man ... America is going to look very strange to Americans and they will not be at home here, for the air will slowly become unbreathable to all forms of life except sheep. ~ Martha Gellhorn
Caucus Room quotes by Martha Gellhorn
I am like that guy on the 'Odd Couple,' and it is not the neat guy. I go into my room and find pieces of pizza under the laundry. ~ Rick Majerus
Caucus Room quotes by Rick Majerus
Marriage to Perry meant she was always ready to justify her actions, constantly monitoring what she'd just said or done, while simultaneously feeling defensive about the defensiveness, her thoughts and feelings twisting into impenetrable knots, so that sometimes, like right now, sitting in a room with normal people, all the things she couldn't say rose in her throat and for a moment she couldn't breathe. ~ Liane Moriarty
Caucus Room quotes by Liane Moriarty
In the room the women come and go talking of Michelangelo. ~ T. S. Eliot
Caucus Room quotes by T. S. Eliot
With bad movies, I have this image in my head of the director and the editor in the editing room watching a scene that is not happening, looking at each other and saying, 'Put some music in there.' ~ Gustavo Santaolalla
Caucus Room quotes by Gustavo Santaolalla
C'mon! Anything over eight inches is strictly for show-and-tell. It's there, but you can't use it. It might look good in a locker room, but let's face it - those extra two inches are leftovers." "Leftovers," Luna gasped, holding her stomach and shrieking with laughter. "Let's hear it for l-leftovers! ~ Linda Howard
Caucus Room quotes by Linda Howard
He looked at a picture on the wall and saw everything that existed outside the room he was sitting in and the one he was trying to write about. It was a picture of fishing nets stowed in canvas baskets and it had sex, memories, cravings, names of old friends, principal rivers of the world. Writing was bad for the soul when you got right down to it. It protected your worst tendencies. Narrowed everything to failure and its devastations. Gave your cunning an edge of treachery and your jellyfish heart a reason to fall deeper into silence. ~ Don DeLillo
Caucus Room quotes by Don DeLillo
It's like escaping a hot, bright room
for the serenity of a city at night, covered in snow.
People eliminated. A carpet of silence
for taxis to whisper across. The world becoming
a pleasant dream of itself. The itch
of want smoldering to life on skin. Memory sends
a chill vanishing between vertebrae.
It's New Year's Eve. Hail the Calendar! As if
clocks will pause for a moment
before reloading their long rifles. Years are tiny
freckles on the face of a century.
Where is the constellation we gazed at each night
Through a bill rolled so tight
the first President lost his breath, as our eyeballs
literally unraveled? I am alone
in the rectangular borough in the observatory,
where even fire trucks can't rescue
the arsonist stretching his calves in my brain. ~ Jeffrey McDaniel
Caucus Room quotes by Jeffrey McDaniel
He doesn't move at all. I think he does this on purpose. If he moved, if he even nodded, then there would be no more sides in the room. Everyone would be on the same side. They would be a team. ~ Matthew Dicks
Caucus Room quotes by Matthew Dicks
We'll order up to your sitting room, then."
"Is that appropriate? I mean, for us to be there together, alone."
He puts a hand over his heart, expression shocked. "Why, Jessamin, you'd try to take advantage of me? ~ Kiersten White
Caucus Room quotes by Kiersten White
The bubbleGarden," I say to Dan, voice filling the metal common room. "Take me there." I've already turned on a heel. Ragnar pats his thigh. "Come, dog." It ~ Pierce Brown
Caucus Room quotes by Pierce Brown
No one knocked on his door the next day. Nor the
day after. Nor the one after that. But that didn't mean
he was unaware of what was happening. Someone
had carried a plate of those fucking biscuits past his
room, and even the oak door had provided no
barrier for the smell. Not for anything of hers. ~ Anne Mallory
Caucus Room quotes by Anne Mallory
To read in bed is to draw around us invisible, noiseless curtains. Then at last we are in a room of our own and are ready to burrow back, back to that private life of the imagination we all led as a child and to whose secret satisfactions so many of us have mislaid the key. ~ Clifton Fadiman
Caucus Room quotes by Clifton Fadiman
I was far away from home, haunted & tired with travel, in a room I'd never seen, hearing the hiss of steam outside, the creak of the old wood, footsteps upstairs & all the sad sounds.
I looked at the cracked high ceiling & really didn't know who I was for about 15 strange seconds.
I wasn't scared; I was just somebody else, some stranger & my whole life was a haunted life, the life of a ghost.
I was halfway at the dividing line between the East of my youth & the West of my future. ~ Jack Kerouac
Caucus Room quotes by Jack Kerouac
The water closet's rusting and slightly broken porcelain throne betrayed its purported grandeur. The air was dank and unrecycled. The motel room stunk of body odor because all of the windows were tightly nailed shut and never opened, even though that was in violation of municipal ordinances. ~ Daniel Maldonado
Caucus Room quotes by Daniel Maldonado
Every productive person you will ever come across believes in routine. Hand on my heart, I haven't yet met one who has found 'flying by the seat of their pants' to be an effective way to go about things. That's because having a routine reduces cognitive load. The more stuff you can do on autopilot, the more room you have for ideas and making stuff happen. Having ~ Kelly Exeter
Caucus Room quotes by Kelly Exeter
Theatre is the principal job of an actor. An actor's job is to tell a story to someone in a room. TV and film can be great and I really love doing it, but it is a different way of telling a story. ~ Sylvester McCoy
Caucus Room quotes by Sylvester McCoy
Once upon a time, a woman told this to her daughter: Save yourself. The girl didn't think to ask for what? She looked into her mother's face and answered Yes. Years later, alone in the room where she lives The daughter listens to the life she's been saved from: Evening patter. Summer laughter. Young bodies Racing into the unmitigated happiness of danger. ~ Tracy K. Smith
Caucus Room quotes by Tracy K. Smith
In this large and fierce world of ours, there are many, many unpleasant places to be. You can be in a river swarming with angry electric eels, or in a supermarket filled with vicious long-distance runners. You can be in a hotel that has no room service, or you can be lost in a forest that is slowly filling up with water. You can be in a hornet's nest or in an abandoned airport or in the office of a pediatric surgeon, but one of the most unpleasant things that can happen is to find yourself in a quandary. Which is where the Baudelaire orphans found themselves that night. Finding yourself in a quandary means that everything seems confusing and dangerous and you don't know what in the world to do about it, and it is one of the worst unpleasantries you can encounter. ~ Lemony Snicket
Caucus Room quotes by Lemony Snicket
It's not that introverts aren't good team players. We just don't need to be in the same room as the rest of the team at all times. We would much prefer to have part of the project carved out for us to squirrel away with it in our offices, consulting as necessary but working independently. ~ Sophia Dembling
Caucus Room quotes by Sophia Dembling
If I went to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, I didn't go for the horse or the elephant – I went for the freak show in the back: the one-breasted man; the half-bearded woman (in other words, the people who today have become politicians). In my day they were in the back room of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, ~ Michael Savage
Caucus Room quotes by Michael Savage
To image the being of God towards the world, to be the priest of creation, is to behave towards the world in all its aspects, of work, and of play, in such a way that it may come to be what it was created to be, that which praises its maker by becoming perfect in its own way. In all this, there is room for both usefulness and beauty to take their due place, but differently according to differences of activity and object. ~ Colin Gunton
Caucus Room quotes by Colin Gunton
There was a kind of autumnal stain in the air that reminded me of the smell of leather work gloves, a high-school locker room at homecoming, the inside of an ancient canvas tent. ~ Michael Chabon
Caucus Room quotes by Michael Chabon
Gathered in the folding chairs of the meeting room, they made a diverse group with the drug-addicted, a perfect democracy of collapse. ~ Jeffrey Eugenides
Caucus Room quotes by Jeffrey Eugenides
Shit, I forgot. This time of the afternoon the bar's probably shut. Half the staff has gone sick again. Mono, I think. Well, let's go look anyway; we might be lucky. We can't go up to my room
it's full of bugs.'
Which kind?'
Both. ~ John Brunner
Caucus Room quotes by John Brunner
People think the painting is a portrait, but it isn't. Not really. He wasn't even in the field; he conjured it from a room in the house, an entirely different angle. He removed rocks and trees and outbuildings. The scale of the barn is wrong. And I am not that frail young thing, but a middle-aged spinster. It's not my body, really, and maybe not even my head. He ~ Christina Baker Kline
Caucus Room quotes by Christina Baker Kline
In fact, it's Douggie's growing conviction that the greatest flaw of the species is its overwhelming tendency to mistake agreement for truth. Single biggest influence on what a body will or won't believe is what nearby bodies broadcast over the public band. Get three people in the room and they'll decide that the law of gravity is evil and should be rescinded because one of their uncles got shit-faced and fell off the roof. ~ Richard Powers
Caucus Room quotes by Richard Powers
I haven't been approached to do anything, but I would certainly make room for it. It was a really fun time. ~ Kathy Valentine
Caucus Room quotes by Kathy Valentine
I folded my hands back on my desk, and as I did, I saw Paul's slanted handwriting standing out against my blocky, square printing on my skin. He'd managed to find room to squeeze in the words females hurt my brain on my left hand. I raised an eyebrow at him and he gave me a look like, well it's true, isn't it? ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Caucus Room quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
nearby New York or distant Beijing, but whenever I was in town, I'd call to say I was on my way. Each time I'd arrive, she'd already have covered half the dining room table with the kind of items I only seemed to consume with her. They were a reflection of her more traditional fare from the old world - hard-boiled eggs, pickled cucumbers, herring in brine, black bread and cream cheese. We'd supplement this with ethnic staples ~ Leon Berger
Caucus Room quotes by Leon Berger
For any of us in this room today, let's start out by admitting we're lucky. We don't live in the world our mothers lived in, our grandmothers lived in, where career choices for women were so limited. ~ Sheryl Sandberg
Caucus Room quotes by Sheryl Sandberg
In 1517, few western Christians worried that Muslims might have a more convincing message to offer than Christianity or that Christian youth might start converting to Islam. The Turks were at the gate, it's true, but they weren't in the living room, and they certainly weren't in the bedroom. The Turks posed a threat to the physical health of Christians, but not to the spiritual health of Christianity.

Muslims were in a different boat. Almost from the start, as I've discussed, Islam had offered its political and military successes as an argument for its doctrines and a proof of its revelations. The process began with those iconic early battles at Badr and Uhud, when the outcome of battle was shown to have theological meaning. The miracle of expansion and the linkage of victory with truth continued for hundreds of years.

Then came the Mongol holocaust, which forced Muslim theologians to reexamine their assumptions. That process spawned such reforms as Ibn Taymiyah. Vis-a-vis the Mongols, however, the weakness of Muslims was concrete and easy to understand. The Mongols had greater killing power, but they came without an ideology. When the bloodshed wound down and the human hunger for meaning bubbled up, as it always does, they had nothing to offer. In fact, they themselves converted. Islam won in the end, absorbing the Mongols as it has absorbed the Turks before them and the Persians before that.

The same could not be said of the new overlor ~ Tamim Ansary
Caucus Room quotes by Tamim Ansary
You'd be surprised how many people want to hang an electric chair on their living-room wall. Specially if the background color matches the drapes. ~ Andy Warhol
Caucus Room quotes by Andy Warhol
No carbs" her mother called after her as she went into the dressing room "And no butter"
"I know you stole me from my real parents" Min called back. "They'd let me eat butter ~ Jennifer Crusie
Caucus Room quotes by Jennifer Crusie
I have a drum set in my dressing room. I play drums to relax and have some fun. ~ Queen Latifah
Caucus Room quotes by Queen Latifah
I'm not ill like that," she groaned. He sat on her bed, peeling back the blanket. A servant entered, frowning at the mess on the floor, and shouted for help.
"Then it what way?"
"I,uh ... " Her face was so hot she thought it would melt onto the floor. Oh you idiot. "My monthly cycles finally came back!"
His face suddenly matched hers and he stepped away, dragging his hand through his short hair. "I-if ... Then I'll take my leave," he stammered, and bowed. Celaena raised an eyebrow, and then, despite herself, smiled as he left the room as quick as his feet could go without running, tripping slightly in the doorway as he staggered into the rooms beyond. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Caucus Room quotes by Sarah J. Maas
There's the wonder of being able to do research from your own living room, of course. I do find that my biggest research issue, though, is how to frame my questions. ~ Victor LaValle
Caucus Room quotes by Victor LaValle
One of the previous Kings of the Enchanted Forest had been very fond of sweeping up and down staircases in a long velvet robe and his best crown, so he had added stairs wherever he thought there was room ~ Patricia C. Wrede
Caucus Room quotes by Patricia C. Wrede
Jane turned and craned her neck, first noting that the gentleman who stopped beside her was a well-dressed fellow. Then she finished looking up.
There it was.
The nose.
Truly, it was a great, arching eagle nose that would enter a room five whole seconds before the rest of him did. ~ Cynthia Hand
Caucus Room quotes by Cynthia Hand
Have you forgotten me?
by Nancy B. Brewer

The bricks I laid or the stitches I sewed.
I was the one that made the quilt; a drop of blood still shows from my needle prick.
Your wedding day in lace and satin, in a dress once worn by me.
I loaned your newborn baby my christening gown, a hint of lavender still preserved.

Do you know our cause, the battles we won and the battles we lost?
When our soldiers marched home did you shout hooray!
Or shed a tear for the fallen sons.

What of the fields we plowed, the cotton, the tobacco and the okra, too.
There was always room at my table for one more,
Fried chicken, apple pie, biscuits and sweet ice tea.

A time or two you may have heard our stories politely told.
Some of us are famous, recorded on the pages of history.
Still, most of us left this world without glory or acknowledgment.

We were the first to walk the streets you now call home,
Perhaps you have visited my grave and flowers left,
but did you hear me cry out to you?

Listen, my child, to the voices of your ancestors.
Take pride in our accomplishments; find your strength in our suffering.
For WE are not just voices in the wind, WE are a living part of YOU! ~ Nancy B. Brewer
Caucus Room quotes by Nancy B. Brewer
Our laws might seem harsh but we're not inhuman. We treasure every unique individual. We make room for difference. ~ Nalini Singh
Caucus Room quotes by Nalini Singh
I'm like a stuffed toy. You've never met me, but if you did, you'd just want to take me home and put me in your child's room. ~ Richard Simmons
Caucus Room quotes by Richard Simmons
Standing up on her wobbly legs, Blue began to use all of the protective visualizations she'd been taught by her mother. She imagined herself inside an unbreakable glass ball; she could see out, but no on could touch her.
She imagined white light piercing the stormy clouds, the roof, the darkness of Noah, finding Blue, armoring her.
Then she pulled the plug on the battery that was Blue Sargent.
The room went still. The papers settled. The light flickered once more and then strengthened. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Caucus Room quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
The most influential person in the room isn't the one who is being a bully, talking loudly, and imposing him- or herself on others. Surrendered people understand that true power comes from being respectful and listening. ~ Judith Orloff
Caucus Room quotes by Judith Orloff
There's no room for pride, not in a slave,
not with the lord and master standing by. ~ Sophocles
Caucus Room quotes by Sophocles
Matthew sighed as he set the bottle on the mantel. "You know what they say," he said, as he and James left the room and began to wend their way back toward the party. "Drink, and you will sleep; sleep, and you will not sin; do not sin, and you will be saved; therefore, drink and be saved."
"Matthew, you could sin in your sleep," said a languorous voice.
"Anna," said Matthew, sagging against James's shoulder. "Have you been sent to fetch us?"
Lounging against the wall was James's cousin Anna Lightwood, gorgeously dressed in fitted trousers and a pin-striped shirt. She had the Herondale blue eyes, always disconcerting for James to see, as it felt a bit as if his father were looking at him. "If by 'fetch,' you mean 'drag you back to the ballroom by any means possible,'  " Anna said. "There are girls who need someone to dance with them and tell them they look pretty, and I cannot do it all on my own."
The musicians in the ballroom suddenly struck up a tune - a lively waltz.
"Crikey, not waltzing," said Matthew, in despair. "I loathe waltzing."
He began to back away. Anna seized him by the back of the coat. "Oh, no, you don't," she said, and firmly herded both of them toward the ballroom. ~ Cassandra Clare
Caucus Room quotes by Cassandra Clare
Fear pounds on the door to our heart demanding to be let in. Joy is modest and often comes into our lives like a shy person entering a room; it can take a while to even notice it's there. ~ Jonathan Carroll
Caucus Room quotes by Jonathan Carroll
For me, theory has always opened things up to where I can walk into a room and just by hearing something I know exactly where to go on the guitar. I have a better time playing because I have a variety of colors to bring to the table. ~ John Frusciante
Caucus Room quotes by John Frusciante
Sometimes Marlboro Man and I would venture out into the world--go to the city, see a movie, eat a good meal, be among other humans. But what we did best was stay in together, cooking dinner and washing dishes and retiring to the chairs on his front porch or the couch in his living room, watching action movies and finding new and inventive ways to wrap ourselves in each other's arms so not a centimeter of space existed between us. It was our hobby. And we were good at it.
It was getting more serious. We were getting closer. Each passing day brought deeper feelings, more intense passion, love like I'd never known it before. To be with a man who, despite his obvious masculinity, wasn't at all afraid to reveal his soft, affectionate side, who had no fears or hang-ups about declaring his feelings plainly and often, who, it seemed, had never played a head game in his life…this was the romance I was meant to have.
Occasionally, though, after returning to my house at night, I'd lie awake in my own bed, wrestling with the turn my life had taken. Though my feelings for Marlboro Man were never in question, I sometimes wondered where "all this" would lead. We weren't engaged--it was way too soon for that--but how would that even work, anyway? It's not like I could ever live out here. I tried to squint and see through all the blinding passion I felt and envision what such a life would mean. Gravel? Manure? Overalls? Isolation?
Then, almost without fail, just about the time ~ Ree Drummond
Caucus Room quotes by Ree Drummond
He walked me to the next room and sat me on the bed. He knelt down before me, held my face in his hands and said that I looked beautiful. I was benumbed by the suddenness of his advance. He ran his fingers over my forehead, my eyes and cheeks and then through the neck down to…the whole thing was inappropriate. An affront. I realised he was exploiting my numbness. Anger surged in me. I pushed him aside, jumped out of the bed and ran to my room. I closed the door behind me and slouched against it. My whole body shivered. Unable to sleep, scared that he might forcefully enter the room again, I sat against the door and remained awake the whole night. ~ Hariharan Iyer
