By holiday time, Buena Vista Street felt like Bedford Falls, with its vintage lights and decorations, and a classic Santa Claus listening to children's holiday wishes at Elias & Co. Cocoa clutching---Guests in scarves and parkas filled the streets and shops. ~ Leslie Le Mon
Buena Vista Street quotes by Leslie Le Mon
We see parts of each other, and we put them together. But if I want to see you in totality, you need to move away; we need space between us. Across the street, I can see all of you at once, but then I also see this huge vista of space surrounding you, coming in and compressing you. ~ Diego Giacometti
Buena Vista Street quotes by Diego Giacometti
If you want to know what makes you happy, imagine your very last day on this earth. Think about who you would wish to spend it with, where you might be and what you might be doing. For me, I would wish to spend it with the ones I love, somewhere not far from Nature, by the ocean, or maybe in a vibrant city, in a street with sights and sounds of people. Perhaps there's a vista of a fountain or a river... and watching the world go by, I'd be writing, completing the last chapter to a final book ... ~ Suzy Davies
Buena Vista Street quotes by Suzy Davies
Acquainted with the Night
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night. ~ Robert Frost
Buena Vista Street quotes by Robert Frost
Somebody's willingness to let me photograph them, and willingness to tell me a story, has nothing to do with the words I say. It all has to do with the energy I'm giving off, which hopefully is very genuine, very interested energy. It's just two people having a conversation in the street. I think that's where genuine content comes from. ~ Brandon Stanton
Buena Vista Street quotes by Brandon Stanton
Cromwell informed me I'd only have the keys to my car once I'd earned his trust back. His trust? Like I was the creeptastic person who whipped kids off the street and collected them like figurines? ~ Jennifer L. Armentrout
Buena Vista Street quotes by Jennifer L. Armentrout
The worst kind of crying wasn't the kind everyone could see- the wailing on street corners, the tearing at clothes. No, the worst kind happened when your soul wept and no matter what you did, there was no way to comfort it. ~ Katie McGarry
Buena Vista Street quotes by Katie McGarry
That file full of letters meant I met with a Special Needs teacher in the hallway to get something called Individualized Attention, and let me tell you, working in the hallway with a teacher is like being the street person of a school. People pass you by, and they act like they don't see you, but three steps away they've got a whole story in their heads about why you're out there instead of in the nice cozy classroom where you belong, Stupid? Unlucky? Unloved? ~ Esme Raji Codell
Buena Vista Street quotes by Esme Raji Codell
He no longer felt anything for that person, but not feeling anything for that person had been a conscious act of will, like turning away from someone in the street even though you saw them constantly, and pretending you couldn't see them day after day until one day, you actually couldn't - or so you could make yourself believe. ~ Hanya Yanagihara
Buena Vista Street quotes by Hanya Yanagihara
A drone is often preferred for missions that are too "dull, dirty, or dangerous" for manned aircraft."

PROLOGUE

The graffiti was in Spanish, neon colors highlighting the varicose cracks in the wall. It smelled of urine and pot. The front door was metal with four bolt locks and the windows were frosted glass, embedded with chicken wire. They swung out and up like big fake eye-lashes held up with a notched adjustment bar.

This was a factory building on the near west side of Cleveland in an industrial area on the Cuyahoga River known in Ohio as The Flats.

First a sweatshop garment factory, then a warehouse for imported cheeses then a crack den for teenage potheads. It was now headquarters for Magic Slim, the only pimp in Cleveland with his own film studio and training facility.

Her name was Cosita, she was eighteen looking like fourteen. One of nine children from El Chorillo. a dangerous poverty stricken barrio on the outskirts of Panama City. Her brother, Javier, had been snatched from the streets six months ago, he was thirteen and beautiful.

Cosita had a high school education but earned here degree on the streets of Panama.

Interpol, the world's largest international police organization, had recruited Cosita at seventeen. She was smart, street savvy, motivated and very pretty. Just what Interpol was looking for.

Cosita would become a Drone! ~ Nick Hahn
Buena Vista Street quotes by Nick Hahn
What if America isn't really the sort of place where a street urchin can charm his way to the top through diligence and talent? What if instead it's the sort of place where heartwarming stories about abused children who triumphed through adversity are made up and marketed? ~ David Shields
Buena Vista Street quotes by David Shields
Taking our inspiration from an article on the proper way to walk in a city that appeared recently in the celebrated Parisian magazine Matin, we too should make our feelings clear to people who have yet to learn how to conduct themselves on the streets of Istanbul and tell them, "Don't walk down the street with your mouth open" [1924]. It ~ Orhan Pamuk
Buena Vista Street quotes by Orhan Pamuk
My moves are smooth. Always have been. I'm smart enough to see what's coming, and clever enough to turn it my way. All my skills make me perfect for this. The street dance. The hustle. ~ Kekla Magoon
Buena Vista Street quotes by Kekla Magoon
You try to follow suit and the directors I work with, like Sidney Lumet (on film in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead and TV in 100 Centre Street) who thinks actors hung the moon, thinks they can do anything, but he also works really quickly, the same like Clint Eastwood, and so you better also do your homework, you know? ~ Amy Ryan
Buena Vista Street quotes by Amy Ryan
What would it be like really and absolutely to believe? ( ... ) To know, really and absolutely know, that there's a Divine Being not set in time or space who reads your thoughts better than you ever did, and probably before you even have them? To believe that God sends you to war, God bends the path of bullets, decides which of his children will die, or have their legs blown off, or make a few hundred million on Wall Street, depending on today's Grand Design? (ch. 14) ~ John Le Carre
Buena Vista Street quotes by John Le Carre
Women who are harassed, at work, on the street, or even online, are subject to the same rigid purity standards as women who are sexually assaulted, Just by virtue of being out in public, we're overstepping certain boundaries. ~ Jessica Valenti
Buena Vista Street quotes by Jessica Valenti
Every time you walk down the street people are screaming, 'You're fired!' ~ Donald Trump
Buena Vista Street quotes by Donald Trump
And looked sharply across the street. There was only one house ~ Pearl S. Buck
Buena Vista Street quotes by Pearl S. Buck
I loved the fact that I was suddenly no longer dependent on whether a store took out an ad in the right place, or on the word on the street. ~ Neil Gaiman
Buena Vista Street quotes by Neil Gaiman
Wall Street wants to keep its schemes too complicated to understand so that the roulette wheel can keep turning. ~ Maria Cantwell
Buena Vista Street quotes by Maria Cantwell
Part of the problem with Occupy Wall Street was that folks were never really clear on what they were fighting for. If you don't know what you're fighting for, how do you know when you've got victory? In some ways, new media makes it easier for people to connect. It's hard, though, because we're much more seduced by the Internet, by big-screen TVs, by cell phones that can do everything. ~ Stanley Nelson Jr.
Buena Vista Street quotes by Stanley Nelson Jr.
Food Stamp recipients didn't cause the financial crisis; recklessness on Wall Street did. ~ Barack Obama
Buena Vista Street quotes by Barack Obama
The CEOs of every major Wall Street firm were also on the wrong end of the gamble. All of them, without exception, either ran their public corporations into bankruptcy or were saved from bankruptcy by the United States government. They all got rich, too. ~ Michael Lewis
Buena Vista Street quotes by Michael Lewis
Street artists need to get back to actually doing things on the streets instead of in the galleries where they all seem to be ending up. I hope this term 'street artist' falls from the face of the earth, in my honest opinion. ~ Barry McGee
Buena Vista Street quotes by Barry McGee
Some people are street-smart, some people are book-smart, but most people are just dumber than dirt. ~ Lois Greiman
Buena Vista Street quotes by Lois Greiman
When they saw me walking down the street smoking a cigar, they'd say, 'Hey, that 14-year-old kid may be going places.' Of course it's also a good prop on the stage ... When you can't think of what you're supposed to say next, you can puff on your cigar until you think of your next line. ~ George Burns
Buena Vista Street quotes by George Burns
I became aware of the world's tenderness, the profound beneficence of all that surrounded me, the blissful bond between me and all of creation, and I realized that the joy I sought in you was not only secreted within you, but breathed around me everywhere, in the speeding street sounds, in the hem of a comically lifted skirt, in the metallic yet tender drone of the wind, in the autumn clouds bloated with rain. I realized that the world does not represent a struggle at all, or a predaceous sequence of chance events, but the shimmering bliss, beneficent trepidation, a gift bestowed upon us and unappreciated. ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Buena Vista Street quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
Give my regards to Broadway,
Remember me to Herald Square,
Tell all the gang at 42nd Street,
That I will soon be there;
Whisper of how I'm yearning
To mingle with the old time throng,
Give my regards to old Broadway,
And say that I'll be there e'er long. ~ George M. Cohan
Buena Vista Street quotes by George M. Cohan
In ancient times there was no public education, except that of the forum, the theater, and the street, and the general degree of illiteracy was very high ... the early men of science were left very much to themselves and such a phrase as "the scientific culture of Alexandria in the third century B.C." does not cover any reality. In a sense, this is still true today; the real pioneers are so far ahead of the crowd (even a very literate crowd) that they remain almost alone ... ~ George Sarton
Buena Vista Street quotes by George Sarton
I was in Manhattan during 9/11, and that was really the only thing that I related to as far as a disaster on a grand scale. It was really interesting to see on that day and in the weeks afterwards how people came together, and what people were able to do for each other, and what I found myself feeling and thinking and doing for the people around me, whether it was strangers on the street or my own family. It was really an experience that you can't fake. ~ Alexandra Daddario
Buena Vista Street quotes by Alexandra Daddario
What could be better than walking down any street in any city and knowing you're the heavyweight champion of the world? ~ Rocky Marciano
Buena Vista Street quotes by Rocky Marciano
You cannot meet someone for a moment, or even cast eyes on someone in the street, without changing. That is my subject. ~ Carolyn Kizer
Buena Vista Street quotes by Carolyn Kizer
I'd been just like her, a youngster with something to say, a rebel through street art, leaving my mark on public buildings, to taunt the government and humor the public ~ Kenya Wright
Buena Vista Street quotes by Kenya Wright
Broad Street marked the first time in history when a reasonable person might have surveyed the state of urban life and come to the conclusion that cities would someday become great conquerers of disease. Until then, it looked like a losing battle all the way. ~ Steven Johnson
Buena Vista Street quotes by Steven Johnson
I look out the window and I see the lights and the skyline and the people on the street rushing around looking for action, love, and the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie, and my heart does a little dance. ~ Nora Ephron
Buena Vista Street quotes by Nora Ephron
Other people, so I have read, treasure memorable moments in their lives: the time one climbed the Parthenon at sunrise, the summer night one met a lonely girl in Central Park and achieved with her a sweet and natural relationship, as they say in books. I too once met a girl in Central Park, but it is not much to remember. What I remember is the time John Wayne killed three men with a carbine as he was falling to the dusty street in Stagecoach, and the time the kitten found Orson Welles in the doorway in The Third Man. ~ Walker Percy
