The thoughts of a prisoner - they're not free either. They kept returning to the same things. A single idea keeps stirring. Would they feel that piece of bread in the mattress? Would he have any luck in the dispensary that evening? Would they out Buinovsky in the cells? And how did Tsezar get his hands on that warm vest? ~ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Work Camp quotes by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
The acceleration of contemporary life also plays a role in this lack of being. The society of laboring and achievement is not a free society. It generates new constraints. Ultimately, the dialectic of master and slave does not yield a society where everyone is free and capable of leisure, too. Rather, it leads to a society of work in which the master himself has become a laboring slave. In this society of compulsion, everyone carries a work camp inside. This labor camp is defined by the fact that one is simultaneously prisoner and guard, victim and perpetrator. One exploits oneself. It means that exploitation is possible even without domination. ~ Byung-Chul Han
Work Camp quotes by Byung-Chul Han
Muslims are bad because they are, that's all. Why would you need a reason? It's one thing to let your child go blind because you read on Facebook that the measles vaccine would make him autistic, it's another to ship him off to a work camp because he inherited his grandmother's genes instead of Grandpa's. Our entire race is trying to lobotomize itself. It's as moronic and repulsive as someone cutting off their own legs. ~ Sylvain Neuvel
Work Camp quotes by Sylvain Neuvel
My father had once told me the story of how, when he was in the work camp, a truckload of giant logs was brought in to be chopped. He was on ax duty with a gang of twelve. It was a dreadfully hot summer and each swing of the blade was torture. He hacked at a log and there was the unmistakable sound of metal hitting metal. He bent down and found a mushroom-shaped chunk of lead embedded in the trunk. A bullet. He counted the rings from the perimeter to the bullet and found they matched his age exactly.

We never escape ourselves, he said to me years later. ~ Colum McCann
Work Camp quotes by Colum McCann
Finding the medium that excites your imagination, that you love to play with and work in, is an important step to freeing your creative energies. ~ Ken Robinson
Work Camp quotes by Ken Robinson
Mary was proud of her husband, not merely because he was a musician, but because he was a blacksmith. For, with the true taste of a right woman, she honored the manhood that could do hard work. The day will come, and may I do something to help it hither, when the youth of our country will recognize that, taken in itself, it is a more manly, and therefore in the old true sense a more _gentle_ thing, to follow a good handicraft, if it make the hands black as a coal, than to spend the day in keeping books, and making up accounts, though therein the hands should remain white--or red, as the case may be. Not but that, from a higher point of view still, all work, set by God, and done divinely, is of equal honor; but, where there is a choice, I would gladly see boy of mine choose rather to be a blacksmith, or a watchmaker, or a bookbinder, than a clerk. Production, making, is a higher thing in the scale of reality, than any mere transmission, such as buying and selling. It is, besides, easier to do honest work than to buy and sell honestly. The more honor, of course, to those who are honest under the greater difficulty! But the man who knows how needful the prayer, "Lead us not into temptation," knows that he must not be tempted into temptation even by the glory of duty under difficulty. In humility we must choose the easiest, as we must hold our faces unflinchingly to the hardest, even to the seeming impossible, when it is given us to do. ~ George MacDonald
Work Camp quotes by George MacDonald
The darker side of Nietzsche's ideas was incorporated into the Nazi belief system. Part of the link was straightforward: some things Nietzsche said were pure Nazi doctrine. His comments that 'The extinction of many types of people is just as desirable as any form of reproduction' and that 'the tendency must be towards the rendering extinct of the wretched, the deformed, the degenerate' could come from any work on racial hygiene.

Nietzsche's central contribution was not these explicitly Social Darwinist views, but his rejection of the Judeo-Christian morality of compassion for the weak. Self-creation required hardness towards oneself: a strong will imposing coherence on conflicting impulses. It also requires hardness on others. Conflicts between the self-creative projects of different people made inevitable the attempt to dominate others. The whole of life was a struggle in which victory went to the brave and to the strong-willed. Noble human qualities, linked with the will to power, were brought out in combat but atrophied in peace. Compassion was weakness, cowardice and self-deception. The Judeo-Christian emphasis on it was poison. In drawing these consequences from his beliefs about the death of God and from Social Darwinism, Nietzsche provided the part of the Nazi belief system which 'justified' the cruel steps they took to implement their other beliefs. ~ Jonathan Glover
Work Camp quotes by Jonathan Glover
Every weekend we've been trying to go out of town, to let people know about this album. I've been trying to host parties. It's hard, because it's a lot of work to do both. ~ Angie Martinez
Work Camp quotes by Angie Martinez
Free the fire fluttering inside her rib cage. Work her muscles, the bow, the violin, until she played herself to ash and embers and left the rest of the world behind to smolder. ~ Alexandra Bracken
Work Camp quotes by Alexandra Bracken
There is no morality in the mushroom cloud. The black rain of nuclear ashes will fall alike on the just and the unjust. And then it will be too late to wish that we had done the real work of this atomic age, which is to seek a world that is neither red nor dead. ~ Edward Kennedy
Work Camp quotes by Edward Kennedy
Beat and cuff your slave, keep him hungry and spiritless, and he will follow the chain of his master like a dog; but, feed and clothe him well, - work him moderately - surround him with physical comfort, - and dreams of freedom intrude. Give him a bad master, and he aspires to a good master; give him a good master, and he wishes to become his own master. ~ Frederick Douglass
Work Camp quotes by Frederick Douglass
I'm going to work with the Senate and the House to make sure we have a bill that lowers tuition for all Floridians. ~ Rick Scott
Work Camp quotes by Rick Scott
Commitment, I finally said. Both people have to be committed. I think if two people are committed to the marriage, if they really want to make it work, then they'll find a way to do it. No matter what happens in life. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Work Camp quotes by Nicholas Sparks
I admired the work of photographers like Beaton, Penn, and Avedon as much as I respected the grittier photographers such as Robert Frank. But in the same way that I had to find my own way of reportage, I had to find my own form of glamour. ~ Annie Leibovitz
Work Camp quotes by Annie Leibovitz
Work hard. Play hard. Be nice! ~ Katherine King
Work Camp quotes by Katherine King
Get your associates as fast as you can and then get a bachelors."
"I don't want that. I want to work in TV."
"Trust me, Laura. You'd be happier if you were an accountant. ~ Teresa Lo
Work Camp quotes by Teresa Lo
Jesus commissioned his church to make disciples of all nations. In this carefully researched work, Thomas Hudgins fleshes out the methods and goals to achieve this divinely ordained assignment. I am thankful for the heart and passion of Thomas. You will find them emerging from the pages of this work. ~ Daniel L. Akin
Work Camp quotes by Daniel L. Akin
Work dominates life in Eden-Olympia, and drives out everything else. The dream of a leisure society was the great twentieth-century delusion. Work is the new leisure. Talented and ambitious people work harder than they have ever done, and for longer hours. They find their only fulfillment through work. The men and women running successful companies need to focus their energies on the task in front of them, and for every minute of the day. The last thing they want is recreation. ~ J.G. Ballard
Work Camp quotes by J.G. Ballard
I have high heels in my bags if I need them for a shoot. But I like sneakers. I like being comfortable. I like to sit on the floor with my team and work. I don't like to sit in fancy chairs. It's really important to the culture of my company that people understand who they're working for. ~ Bobbi Brown
Work Camp quotes by Bobbi Brown
For if there was to be any transformation in the spiritual orientation of the pilgrim's soul, that change would take place not on arrival as if by magic, but in the long, hard work of The Way. ~ Stephen R. Lawhead
Work Camp quotes by Stephen R. Lawhead
In my own work, I'd say I'm a classicist, but I look everywhere for my solutions. I don't study the toilet-living habits of my clients, although that's a popular approach. First, I think of every building in history that has been similar in purpose. Then I think of the functional program - that's a major part of the study. ~ Philip Johnson
Work Camp quotes by Philip Johnson
My best advice for
you, honey, is to stop if you possibly can! And if you just can't, then get ready to work
like hell. Hang onto your day job. And remember, you may not make a living, but you'll
make a wonderful life. ~ Doris Betts
Work Camp quotes by Doris Betts
The yogi
tends to work inwardly, focusing on the body, whereas the magus directs the will
outwardly upon the objects of the greater world. This apparent distinction is misleading,
since inner world and outer world have no dividing boundary, but are an
indivisible universe perceived by a single human mind. The ultimate goal is similar
in both practices-to master the personal universe and yoke it to the higher aspirations. ~ Donald Tyson
Work Camp quotes by Donald Tyson
Marilyn Monroe was no fun to work with. She would report to work around 5:00 in the evening. You've been in make-up since 8:30 in the morning waiting for her. ~ Tony Randall
Work Camp quotes by Tony Randall
Lame. Fine, work on your mural. I'll go suck on a Froot Loop or something. Or maybe I'll just eat straight sugar. Yeah, I'll do that."
"Good-bye, Mo."
"A raisin. We probably have raisins. I'm sure nature's candy will hit the spot. ~ Jessica Martinez
Work Camp quotes by Jessica Martinez
Fortunately, we did most of our athletic stuff inside, so we didn't have to jog through Tribeca looking like a bunch of boot-camp hippie children. ~ Rick Riordan
Work Camp quotes by Rick Riordan
Bearing an eternal longing for Jewishness, I threw myself in all directions and left to work for another people. I am not one of those lucky ones raised in their own environment, whose work is normal. ~ S. Ansky
Work Camp quotes by S. Ansky
You got to keep all your weaknesses away, and my weakness is women. I love women too much. Which has definitely road-blocked me. I just try my best to channel my energy to other things and remain focused while making my work as fun as everything else. ~ Bow Wow
Work Camp quotes by Bow Wow
Whose work is it but your own to open your eyes? But indeed the business of the universe is to make such a fool out of you that you will know yourself for one, and begin to be wise. ~ George MacDonald
Work Camp quotes by George MacDonald
Role-playing situations work well for many parents. After deprivation or prenatal exposure to substance, many children have verbal instruction as their weakest learning area, but many have role playing as their strongest. ~ Deborah D. Gray
Work Camp quotes by Deborah D. Gray
Rhetoric is will doing the work of imagination ~ W.B.Yeats
Work Camp quotes by W.B.Yeats
I still do not know where the notes will come from when I accept a commission for a new work. ~ Lukas Foss
Work Camp quotes by Lukas Foss
A sexual athlete is not likely to find sufficient energy for work of another athletic kind, and the acting of great parts most definitely was and always will be athletic, depending on inner if not on visible energy. Members of other professions that depend on the expenditure of physical energy must, I believe, find similar difficulties when attempting to double up on their energies. One has often heard that the most magnificent specimens of boxers, wrestlers and champions in almost every branch of athletic sport prove to be disappointing upon the removal of that revered jockstrap. ~ Laurence Olivier
Work Camp quotes by Laurence Olivier
The chair I want for my office has wheels, so I can put it on my treadmill and get some exercise while I work. Likewise, we can't let a love like ours just roll on by without trying to work things out. ~ Jarod Kintz
Work Camp quotes by Jarod Kintz
One of the adults does his best impersonation of a DJ, and when encouragement doesn't work,he demands that everyone form a circle on the dance floor to do the hokey pokey. However, ten seconds into the dance, he suddenly realises how ill advised it is for ex-tithes to be putting various body parts in and out. ~ Neal Shusterman
Work Camp quotes by Neal Shusterman
My mother, a very eclectic listener, had the first Doors album and gave it to me when I expressed interest in the band. It was one of the first records I ever had. As the years passed, the babysitters who used to look after me would bring their Doors albums to the apartment, and that's how I got to hear their later work. ~ Henry Rollins
