At least 600,000 men died in the Civil War. Major battles numbered the dead in the thousands; even minor skirmishes killed hundreds...Then why study the death of thirteen men?... Mass death numbs the mind and heart as it numbers its vast toll. Relief from the horror is less possible when we watch old Joe Woods and thirteen-year-old David Shelton plead for life - and then die. ~ Phillip Shaw Pauadan
War Victims quotes by Phillip Shaw Pauadan
We hear so much about weapons of mass destruction. But nine out of 10 war victims are killed by guns. It's the AK-47 that's a weapon of mass destruction. ~ Andrew Niccol
War Victims quotes by Andrew Niccol
Never say war insane at the moment for you to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. ~ Auliq Ice
War Victims quotes by Auliq Ice
I am beginning to give revelation over ley lines and power lines over nations and continents. I am releasing angels to war along with you and bring revelation over power sources and strong men. ~ Chuck Pierce
War Victims quotes by Chuck Pierce
Well old man, I guess freedom's a continuum. ~ Nicholas Hochstedler
War Victims quotes by Nicholas Hochstedler
As victims of hurt, we frequently don't bring up what ails us, because so many wounds look absurd in the light of day. ~ Alain De Botton
War Victims quotes by Alain De Botton
I disapprove of lots of decisions made by George Bush: the war, the meddling in the affairs of other countries, the conversations with dictators; it was a dark time. ~ Tommy Hilfiger
War Victims quotes by Tommy Hilfiger
Holy shadows of the dead, I am not to blame for your cruel and bitter fate, but the accursed rivalry which brought sister nations and brother people to fight one another. I do not feel happy for this victory of mine. On the contrary, I would be glad, brothers, if I had all of you standing here next to me, since we are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions.
[Addressing the dead Hellenes of the Battle of Chaeronea] ~ Alexander The Great
War Victims quotes by Alexander The Great
Star Wars has always struck a chord with people. There are issues of loyalty, of friendship, of good and evil ... The theme came from stories and ideas that have been around for thousands of years. ~ George Lucas
War Victims quotes by George Lucas
During World War II, there had been a project to sabotage the Nazi nuclear weapons program. Years earlier, Leo Szilard, the first person to realize the possibility of a fission chain reaction, had convinced Fermi not to publish the discovery that purified graphite was a cheap and effective neutron moderator. Fermi had wanted to publish, for the sake of the great international project of science, which was above nationalism. But Szilard had persuaded Rabi, and Fermi had abided by the majority vote of their tiny three-person conspiracy. And so, years later, the only neutron moderator the Nazis had known about was deuterium.

The only deuterium source under Nazi control had been a captured facility in occupied Norway, which had been knocked out by bombs and sabotage, causing a total of twenty-four civilian deaths.

The Nazis had tried to ship the deuterium already refined to Germany, aboard a civilian Norwegian ferry, the SS Hydro.

Knut Haukelid and his assistants had been discovered by the night watchman of the civilian ferry while they were sneaking on board to sabotage it. Haukelid had told the watchman that they were escaping the Gestapo, and the watchman had let them go. Haukelid had considered warning the night watchman, but that would have endangered the mission, so Haukelid had only shaken his hand. And the civilian ship had sunk in the deepest part of the lake, with eight dead Germans, seven dead crew, and three dead civilian bystanders. S ~ Eliezer Yudkowsky
War Victims quotes by Eliezer Yudkowsky
This is it. It's for all the marbles. I'm sitting in the house loading up the pump, I'm loading up the Uzis, I've got a couple of M-16s, couple of nines, couple of joints with some silencers on them, couple of grenades, got a missile launcher. I'm ready for war. ~ Kevin Garnett
War Victims quotes by Kevin Garnett
Observe that anyone who dies for his country is a fortunate man, but death takes what it wants, indiscriminately, in peace-time as well as in war. It is better to die with freedom than without it. ~ Haile Selassie
War Victims quotes by Haile Selassie
Wut 's words to them whose faith an' truth On war's red techstone rang true metal; Who ventered life an' love an' youth For the gret prize o' death in battle? ~ James Russell Lowell
War Victims quotes by James Russell Lowell
Aboard a sailing ship sometime around the War of 1812, ~ Kate Milford
War Victims quotes by Kate Milford
I am a person suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome and I am appalled that it has been given such a trivial name.

Here is a disease that totally disables most of its victims; a disease that causes balance disorders, resulting in some of us requiring wheelchairs, cognitive disorders that leave us unable to perform formerly simple mental tasks, and immune disorders that lay us open to multiple infections and to autoimmune problems.

And all the medical profession can come up with to define this syndrome to the general population is "fatigue! ~ Jane Cuozzo
War Victims quotes by Jane Cuozzo
Unmatch'd at the bottle, unconquer'd in war, He drank his poor god-ship as deep as the sea; No tide of the Baltic e'er drunker than he. ~ Robert Burns
War Victims quotes by Robert Burns
Do you know that people fall in love in war and go to school and go to factories and hospitals and get divorced and go dancing and go playing and live life? ~ Zainab Salbi
War Victims quotes by Zainab Salbi

Austrian Republic established after the war gave an amnesty to 90 per cent of members of the Nazi Party in 1948, and to the SS and Gestapo by 1957. ~ Edmund De Waal
War Victims quotes by Edmund De Waal
If you're all so peaceful up there, how did you get such greedy and cruel ideas?"
The dragon was silent for a long time after this question. And at last he said: "It just came over me. I don't know why. It just came over me, listening to the battling shouts and the war-cries of the earth - I got excited, I wanted to join in. ~ Ted Hughes
War Victims quotes by Ted Hughes
Some people think they are holier than others
Some religions think they are the only true ones
Some gods think they are the most divine
Some races think they are a superior breed
The war goes on to the grave and beyond ~ Bangambiki Habyarimana
War Victims quotes by Bangambiki Habyarimana
WE MADE A MONSTER OF HITLER, A DEVIL. THAT IS WHY (THEREFORE) WE COULD NOT AFTER THE WAR SAY OTHERWISE. WE HAD PERSONALLY MOBILISED THE MASSES NEVERTHELESS AGAINST THE DEVIL. THUS WE WERE FORCED AFTER THE WAR, TO PLAY ALONG WITH THIS DEVILS' SCENARIO. WE COULD NOT POSSIBLY HAVE MADE OUR PEOPLE CLEAR (TO THEM) THAT THE WAR WAS ONLY AN ECONOMIC PREVENTATIVE MEASURE! ~ James Baker
War Victims quotes by James Baker
Little kids play house; they play war; they play relationships. ~ John Green
War Victims quotes by John Green
After the desperate years of their own war, after six years of repression inside Spain and six years of horror in exile, these people remain intact in spirit. They are armed with a transcendent faith; they have never won, and yet they have never accepted defeat. ~ Martha Gellhorn
War Victims quotes by Martha Gellhorn
This war of choice in Iraq is undermining the very fabric of American society. ~ Raul Grijalva
War Victims quotes by Raul Grijalva
Repentance is another name for aspiration. ~ Henry Ward Beecher

War Victims quotes by Kristin Hannah
If the great Western experiment fails and we end up living in totalitarian war-on-terrorism states, one day someone's going to say, 'Well democracy doesn't work because they had to give it up'. ~ Martin Firrell
War Victims quotes by Martin Firrell
There is one great thing that you men will all be able to say after this war is over and you are home once again ... You can look him straight in the eye and say, Son your Granddaddy rode with the Great Third Army and a Son of a Goddamned Bitch named Georgie Patton. ~ George S. Patton Jr.
War Victims quotes by George S. Patton Jr.
Charlie started crying, in the convulsive, soundless way that men do. "Don't you understand," he said after composing himself, "that's a funeral dirge for the first wave." We all thought about that, the many lives lost before we even opened our eyes this morning. ~ Suzanne Hayes
War Victims quotes by Suzanne Hayes
What's so touching is the way we fight the war right until the moment our business is taken care of and then we turn on a dime and we immediately start taking care of people. It's like a shock and aw shucks campaign. ~ Dennis Miller
War Victims quotes by Dennis Miller
Old Rekohu's claim to singularity, however, lay in its unique pacific creed. Since time immemorial, the Moriori's priestly caste dictated that whosoever spilt a man's blood killed his own mana - his honor, his worth, his standing & his soul. No Moriori would shelter, feed, converse with, or even see the persona non grata. If the ostracized murderer survived his first winter, the desperation of solitude usually drove him to a blowhole on Cape Young, where he took his life.

Consider this, Mr. D'Arnoq urged us. Two thousand savages (Mr. Evans's best guess) enshrine "Thou Shalt Not Kill" in word & in deed & frame an oral "Magna Carta" to create a harmony unknown elsewhere for the sixty centuries since Adam first tasted the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. War was as alien a concept to the Moriori as the telescope is to the Pygmy. Peace, not a hiatus betwixt wars but millennia of imperishable peace, rules these far-flung islands. Who can deny Old Rekohu lay closer to More's Utopia than our States of Progress governed by war-hungry princelings in Versailles & Vienna, Washington & Westminster? "Here," declaimed Mr. D'Arnoq, "and where only, were those elusive phantasms, those noble savages, framed in flesh & blood!" (Henry, as we later made our back to the Musket confessed, "I could never describe a race of savages too backwards to throw a spear as 'noble. ~ David Mitchell
War Victims quotes by David Mitchell
In 'Tarahumara' land, there was no crime, war or theft. There was no corruption, obesity, drug addiction, greed, wife-beating, child abuse, heart disease, high blood pressure, or carbon emissions. They didn't get diabetes, or depressed, or even old: 50-year-olds outran teenagers. ~ Christopher McDougall
War Victims quotes by Christopher McDougall
This, the only occasion in the Iliad when furious Achilles smiles serves as a bittersweet reminder of the difference real leadership could have made to the events of the Iliad. Agamemnon's panicked prize-grabbing in Book One and even Nestor's rambling "authority" pale beside Achilles' instinctive and absolute command of himself and the dangers of this occasion. ~ Caroline Alexander
War Victims quotes by Caroline Alexander
One of America's greatest strengths is the soft power of our value system and how we treat prisoners of war, and we don't torture. ~ Tom Ridge
War Victims quotes by Tom Ridge
Liberty is not about class war, income war, race war, national war, a war between the sexes, or any other conflict apart from the core conflict between individuals and those who would seek power and control over the human spirit. Liberty is the dream that we can all work together, in ways of our choosing and of our own human volition, to realize a better life. ~ Jeffrey Tucker
War Victims quotes by Jeffrey Tucker
A novel can be set in motion by an incident, a character, a location, a mood - by anything at all. Sometimes the stimulus can be an idea, which will rapidly clothe itself in character and incident. 'Foreign Bodies' came about through the contemplation of the contrast between post-second world war America and Europe. ~ Cynthia Ozick
War Victims quotes by Cynthia Ozick
The more Indians we can kill ... the less will have to be killed the next war, for the more I see of these Indians, the more convinced I am that they all have to be killed or be maintained as a species of paupers. ~ William Tecumseh Sherman
War Victims quotes by William Tecumseh Sherman
I saw in the whole Christian world a license of fighting at which even barbarous nations might blush. Wars were begun on trifling pretexts or none at all, and carried on without any reference of law, Divine or human. ~ Hugo Grotius
War Victims quotes by Hugo Grotius
If 'feminism' can mean anything from behaving like a man (Miller), being pro-choice (Valenti), being pro-life (Palin), and being pro-war (the Republican administration), then we may simply need to abandon the term, or at the very least, restrict its usage to those situations in which we make quite certain we explain what we mean by it. ~ Nina Power
War Victims quotes by Nina Power
The truth is an anti-war statement in itself. ~ Henry Rollins
War Victims quotes by Henry Rollins
Deliberation is a good thing when it comes to fighting wars. ~ Rahm Emanuel
War Victims quotes by Rahm Emanuel
Not all the treasures of the world, so far as I believe, could have induced me to support an offensive war, for I think it murder; but if a thief breaks into my house, burns and destroys my property, and kills or threatens to kill me, or those that are in it, and to "bind me in all cases whatsoever" to his absolute will, am I to suffer it? ~ Thomas Paine
War Victims quotes by Thomas Paine
God permits war in order that men may bear the consequences of their sins as punishment. How clearly this is shown time and time again in the story of the children of Israel! ~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones
War Victims quotes by Martyn Lloyd-Jones
But [the Arabs'] friendship was venal, their faith inconstant, their enmity capricious: it was an easier task to excite than to disarm these roving barbarians; and, in the familiar intercourse of war, they learned to see, and to despise, the splendid weakness both of Rome and of Persia. ~ Edward Gibbon
War Victims quotes by Edward Gibbon
I had studied Dadaism after the Second World War. What attracted me to this movement was the style its inventors used when not engaged in Dadaistic activities. It was clear, luminous, simple without being banal, precise without being narrow; it was a style adapted to the expression of thought as well as of emotion. I connected this style with the Dadaistic exercises themselves ~ Paul Feyerabend
War Victims quotes by Paul Feyerabend
At a conservative estimate, one million dollars will be spent by American readers for this book [For Whom the Bell Tolls]. They will get for their money 34 pages of permanent value. These 34 pages tell of a massacre happening in a little Spanish town in the early days of the Civil War...Mr. Hemingway: please publish the massacre scene separately, and then forget For Whom the Bell Tolls; please leave stories of the Spanish Civil War to Malraux... ~ Commonweal
