Well old man, I guess freedom's a continuum. ~ Nicholas Hochstedler
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Hochstedler
Thing about being free is, comes a point where you can't turn back, even if you wanted to....Even if you wanted to, they wouldn't take you. You've gone to far. ~ Nicholas Hochstedler
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Hochstedler
And I know just's well as anybody that if you control a man's space and time then you control his whole goddamn life: he's a goner, cause hell, there ain't nothin' for him to do in space and time but make the few choices he can make with what he got. ~ Nicholas Hochstedler
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Hochstedler
I love people that read. I think it screams humility. When someone reads, they are essentially admitting they want more, that the world is not enough for them. They want more knowledge, more experience. Whatever this life is, they want more of it. ~ Nicholas Browne
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Browne
When I am in the process of conceiving a story, I make sure it can be told with words and pictures. The story has to be creative, original and interesting in both areas. Many stories get rejected because they feel derivative. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
George watched this exchange with disappointment. "Performance parenting" was how Tina used to describe it. Seeking to charm listeners in public with one's patience and good humor, using one's child as a foil. Had George not been there, Emily would have told Nicholas to be quiet or no ice cream and that would have been the end of it. ~ Suzanne Berne
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Suzanne Berne
A central argument is never a summary. It is more like a generator. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
The stars were out in full, the crickets a little quieter. He had enjoyed talking to Allie and wondered what she'd thought about his life, hoping it would somehow make a difference, if it could. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
New Yorker, the collection would, in many ways, define us as a couple. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
I'm not good at selling laptops. I'm good at selling ideas. ~ Nicholas Negroponte
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Negroponte
I know you miss me terribly. I miss you, too. But we still have each other, for I am - and always have been - part of you. You carry me in your heart, just as I carried you in mine, and nothing can ever change that. I love you, my darling, and you love me. Hold on to that feeling. Hold on to us. And little by little, you will find a way to heal. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
I love you, too, Garrett. But sometimes love isn't enough. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
Heroes are heroes because they are heroic in behavior, not because they won or lost. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
But a smell shivered him awake.
It was a scent as old as the world. It was a hundred aromas of a thousand places. It was the tang of pine needles. It was the musk of sex. It was the muscular rot of mushrooms. It was the spice of oak. Meaty and redolent of soil and bark and herb. It was bats and husks and burrows and moss. It was solid and alive - so alive! And it was close.
The vapors invaded Nicholas' nostrils and his hair rose to their roots. His eyes were as heavy as manhole covers, but he opened them. Through the dying calm inside him snaked a tremble of fear.
The trees themselves seemed tense, waiting. The moonlight was a hard shell, sharp and ready to ready be struck and to ring like steel.
A shadow moved.
It poured like oil from between the tall trees and flowed across dark sandy dirt, lengthening into the middle of the ring. Trees seem to bend toward it, spellbound. A long, long shadow ... ~ Stephen M. Irwin
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Stephen M. Irwin
And, talking about radiation, few wonder why, after hundreds of million of years of having our skins exposed to sun rays, we suddenly need so much protection from them - is it that our exposure is more harmful than before because of changes in the atmosphere, or populations living in an environment mismatching the pigmentation of their skin - or rather, that makers of sun protection products need to make some profits? ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
I was interested in the ways that artists responded to totalitarianism - the Czech Jazz Section, Romanian absurdist theatre, Brecht's alienation effect. The anything-goes, anarchic qualities of jazz and Surrealism seemed to offer a way to cross some of the forbidden frontiers of Eastern Europe. ~ Nicholas Royle
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Royle
Instead of requiring us to puzzle out where we are in an area, a GPS device simply sets us at the center of the map and then makes the world circulate around us. ~ Nicholas Carr
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Carr
I can remember every moment we were together, and in each of them there was something wonderful. I can't really pick any one time that meant more than any other. The entire summer was perfect, the kind of summer everyone should have. How could I pick one moment over another? ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
If you'd rather not answer, you don't have to," Miles offered. "I'm sure it wouldn't change my impression of him, anyway."
"And what impression is that?"
"I don't like him."
Sarah laughed. "Why do you say that?"
"Because you don't like him."
"You're pretty perceptive. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
There's always pressure, a great deal of pressure, when writing, since my first books were so successful. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
I want to be with you as much as possible, Ronnie. You're smart and funny and you're honest. I trust you. I trust us. Yeah, I'm leaving and you're going back home. But neither of those things changes the way I feel about you. And my feelings aren't going to change simply because I'm going to Vanderbilt. I love you more than I've ever loved anyone. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
Do what feels right to you, in whatever circumstance you find yourself in, even if it seems improbable or even impossible. And have faith. Everything else will follow. ~ Virginia Boecker
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Virginia Boecker
The baby hiccupped then farted.

James laughed. Best wingman ever, and he couldn't even talk. ~ Erin Nicholas
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Erin Nicholas
I've done a little bit of TV. I'm doing a little mini-series at the moment called 'Scooter.' ~ Ben Nicholas
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Ben Nicholas
Won't get done by looking at it! ~ David Anderson
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by David Anderson
We sit silently and watch the world around us. This has taken a lifetime to learn. It seems only the old are able to sit next to one another and not say anything and still feel content. The young, brash and impatient, must always break the silence. It is a waste, for silence is pure. Silence is holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit without speaking. This is the great paradox. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
There's nothing better than a cold beer on a hot day at the beach. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
The Golden Rule wants you to Treat others the way you would like them to treat you. The more robust Silver Rule says Do not treat others the way you would not like them to treat you. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
I'm incredibly grateful for the time I spent with STOMP and even more so for the skills and awareness I developed as a performer during that time. ~ Nicholas Young
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Young
In every age states of varying size and constitution and at every level of development have found naval warfare to be one of their most formidable and expensive tasks. Ships have always been large, costly and complicated, and warships much more complicated and costly than any others. Scholars are nowadays inclined to emphasize the power, wealth and sophistication of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and there is not more striking illustration of this than the advanced and elaborate administrative structures of the early English navy. ~ Nicholas Rodger
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Rodger
It was this situation that led mathematician Chris Hauert and his colleagues to consider another possibility in an important evolutionary model published in Science in 2002. In Axelrod's study and in most previous theoretical models, individuals were forced to interact with each other. But what if they could choose not to interact? Rather than attempting to cooperate and risking being taken advantage of, a person could fend for herself. In other words, she could sever her connections to others in the network. Hauert called the people who adopt this strategy "loners."

Using some beautiful mathematics, Hauert and his colleagues showed that in a world full of loners it is easy for cooperation to evolve because there are no people to take advantage of the cooperators that appear. The loners fend for themselves, and the cooperators form networks with other cooperators. Soon, the cooperators take over the population because they always do better together than the loners. But once the world is full of cooperators, it is very easy for free riders to evolve and enjoy the fruits of cooperation without contributing (like parasites). As the free riders become the dominant type in the population, there is no one left for them to take advantage of; then, the loners once again take over -- because they want nothing to do, as it were, with those bastards. In short, cooperating can emerge because we can do more together than we can apart. But because of the free-rider problem, coop ~ Nicholas A. Christakis
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas A. Christakis
I realize the odds, and science, are against me. But science is not the total answer; this I know, this I have learned in my lifetime. And that leaves me with the belief that miracles, no matter how inexplicable or unbelievable, are real and can occur without regard to the natural order of things. ~ Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Sparks
We end up populating what we call the intelligentsia with people who are delusional, literally mentally deranged, simply because they never have to pay for the consequences of their actions, repeating moderniest slogans stripped of all depth...The principle of intervention, like that of healers, is first do not harm; even more we will argue, those who don't take risks should never be involved in decision making (p.10).

Their three flaws 1) they think in statics not dynamics 2) they think in low, not high dimensions 3) they think in terms of actions, never interactions....The first flaw is they are incapable in thinking in second steps and unaware of the need of them...The second flaw is that they are also incapable of distinguishing between multidimensional problems and their single dimensional representations. The third flaw is they can't forecast the evolution of those one helps by attaching, or the magnification one gets from feedback. (p.9) ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Digital living will include less and less dependence upon being in a specific place at a specific time, and the transmission of place itself will start to become possible. ~ Nicholas Negroponte
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Negroponte
In lower Manhattan there is an improbable point where Waverly Place intersects Waverly Place. It was there that I met Veronica, on a snowy, windy night. ~ Nicholas Christopher
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nicholas Christopher
You never win an argument until they attack your person. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Nicholas Hochstedler quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Half the men worship at her feet; the other half have already proposed marriage, including young Jack, who has sworn to his dear 'miss' that he'll be true if she'll only wait a few more years for him. ~ Alexandra Bracken
