And while he spoke of my mother often and fondly to me, he always did so incompletely, in a strangely peripheral way, so that I grew up with a picture of her that was really little more than an outline. Was this unfair, an injustice to me? It must seem so, and I suppose in a way it was. And yet we all have within ourselves those private spaces that are uniquely our own and that we cannot share. This was my father's: the heart of his grief, which he chose not to expose. It was only now, in these last months before his death, that the outline was filled in, that without preliminary or explanation, my father suddenly began to talk of my mother as he had never talked before, in words and phrases lit with a bursting lyrical warmth and love that had been stored up and held within him all this time, and that was now released because, I think, he knew his own time was so short, and because he did not for a moment doubt that very soon now he would be joined to her again...

So there was a feeling of joy here. ~ Edwin O'Connor
Vlana Death quotes by Edwin O'Connor
Rage washes through me like a fucking wave crashing against the shore. I want to kill Caleb. Beat him to death in the most painful ways. ~ Jessica Sorensen
Vlana Death quotes by Jessica Sorensen
One reason why I recommend the abandonment of religious beliefs is because I think those beliefs are wrong. There is no evidence that our world was created by divine intention, that a god intercedes in human affairs, or that there is life after death. Religion is a hangover from humankind's timorous infancy; it's time for us to walk upright and unafraid, and to take charge of our own lives. ~ Simon LeVay
Vlana Death quotes by Simon LeVay
I'd only watch the Kardashians and the Real Housewives if they were in a Hunger Games-style death match. Sitting ~ Brenda Rothert
Vlana Death quotes by Brenda Rothert
The problem with a lot of people who read only literary fiction is that they assume fantasy is just books about orcs and goblins and dragons and wizards and bullshit. And to be fair, a lot of fantasy is about that stuff.

The problem with people in fantasy is they believe that literary fiction is just stories about a guy drinking tea and staring out the window at the rain while he thinks about his mother. And the truth is a lot of literary fiction is just that. Like, kind of pointless, angsty, emo, masturbatory bullshit.

However, we should not be judged by our lowest common denominators. And also you should not fall prey to the fallacious thinking that literary fiction is literary and all other genres are genre. Literary fiction is a genre, and I will fight to the death anyone who denies this very self-evident truth.

So, is there a lot of fantasy that is raw shit out there? Absolutely, absolutely, it's popcorn reading at best. But you can't deny that a lot of lit fic is also shit. 85% of everything in the world is shit. We judge by the best. And there is some truly excellent fantasy out there. For example, Midsummer Night's Dream; Hamlet with the ghost; Macbeth, ghosts and witches; I'm also fond of the Odyessey; Most of the Pentateuch in the Old Testament, Gargantua and Pantagruel.

Honestly, fantasy existed before lit fic, and if you deny those roots you're pruning yourself so closely that you can't help but wither and die. ~ Patrick Rothfuss
Vlana Death quotes by Patrick Rothfuss
Jakie, is it my birthday or am I dying? (Seeing all her children assembled at her bedside in her last illness.) ~ Nancy Astor The Viscountess Astor
Vlana Death quotes by Nancy Astor The Viscountess Astor
i'm learning that life frequently does this to me. first it offers you an impossible challenge. which you can't refuse. then it breaks your spirit by messing with your ballpoint pen. these may seem like isolated events that can be explained away as coincidences, but i fear not. it's happened far too often to me to be a coincidence. it's this kind of thing that convinces me that i'm not going to make forty and my death will most probably be humiliating and painful - a death that people will still laugh about in three hundred years' time. one day i'm going to sift through every single entry of all my diaries and mark down how many times a stroke of 'bad luck' has followed the issuing of severe test in my life . . . ~ John Van De Ruit
Vlana Death quotes by John Van De Ruit
Philosophy is one reason which could lead to death. ~ Santosh Kalwar
Vlana Death quotes by Santosh Kalwar
Time presses. Death waits even for us. We have a dream to pursue, the whitest white hope of them all, and we must follow and find it before the light fails. So long, losers. God bless. Take care. We'll be seeing you. ~ Dalton Trumbo
Vlana Death quotes by Dalton Trumbo
That day, engrossed together in the fate of the child, he met her mind to mind and fell in love with her, with every grain of his spirit and cell of his body; with the essential finality of death. ~ Dorothy Dunnett
Vlana Death quotes by Dorothy Dunnett
The cry 'Liberty, equality, fraternity or death!' was much in vogue during the Revolution. Liberty ended by covering France with prisons, equality by multiplying titles and decorations, and fraternity by dividing us. Death alone prevailed. ~ Louis De Bonald
Vlana Death quotes by Louis De Bonald
I believe that the purpose of death is the release of love. ~ Laurie Anderson
Vlana Death quotes by Laurie Anderson
A big part of serious fiction's purpose is to give the reader, who like all of us is sort of marooned in her own skull, to give her imaginative access to other selves ... I strongly suspect a big part of real art fiction's job is to aggravate this sense of entrapment and loneliness and death in people, to move people to countenance it. ~ David Foster Wallace
Vlana Death quotes by David Foster Wallace
every time i look up into the sky, with my hands at my sides, i look in the night. every time i look at the world, all i see is the mark of death, the mark of life, and the mark of humans, a disturbance, a burn mark that will never leave. i see myself, not happy, not sad, not anything. i see every person i've ever known, every person i've ever seen, just there. just thinking, just a black mark upon a land of pale light. it's not bad, it's not good, it just is. and that is the way of the world, the way of humans- to just be, forever. because otherwise, all there is, will ever be, is good and bad. ~ Sabine Theresa Wood
Vlana Death quotes by Sabine Theresa Wood
This swallowing up of life in nothingness, this obliteration of life by nothingness is what the emotion of malice ultimately desires. The eternal conflict between love and malice is the eternal contest between life and death. And this contest is what the complex vision reveals, as it moves from darkness to darkness. ~ John Cowper Powys
Vlana Death quotes by John Cowper Powys
Everyone sounded the same when they died. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Vlana Death quotes by Sarah J. Maas
When Jesus wanted to explain to his disciples what his death was all about, he didn't give them a theory, he gave them a meal. ~ N. T. Wright
Vlana Death quotes by N. T. Wright
A boy adopts a hero for two reasons: because a hero captivates his soul and serves as a projection of his innermost self; and, because a hero seems to have solved many problems that may worry a boy, or at least demonstrates the capacity to solve them. The hero is an idealization of successful living, even though he may die in a story. The death may be gallant, brave, tragic, or perhaps even foolhardy. But living or dead, a hero is the stylistic embodiment of living on one's own terms – noble terms, grand terms, exciting terms – terms, in short, that complement any youth's uncorrupted, untamed, unabridged projection of what is possible to him in life ~ Edward Cline
Vlana Death quotes by Edward Cline
I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs' death. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely. ~ Bill Gates
Vlana Death quotes by Bill Gates
Nihilistic passion, adding to
falsehood and injustice, destroys in its fury its original demands and thus deprives rebellion of its most
cogent reasons. It kills in the fond conviction that this world is dedicated to death. The consequence of
rebellion, on the contrary, is to refuse to legitimize murder because rebellion, in principle, is a protest
against death. ~ Albert Camus
Vlana Death quotes by Albert Camus
Unless you know yourself as eternal beings, part of the whole, you will remain afraid of death. ~ Rajneesh
Vlana Death quotes by Rajneesh
You're the son of a king,' I told him, 'and one day you might be a king yourself. Life and death will be your gifts, so learn how to give them, boy. ~ Bernard Cornwell
Vlana Death quotes by Bernard Cornwell
Illusions must be put to death. That is the cruelty of growing up. ~ Marguerite Bennett
Vlana Death quotes by Marguerite Bennett
For the rest of my life?" His voice softens. "Do you want that, Ella May? Do you want me eternally, infinitely, forever, till death do us part? ~ Jessica Sorensen
Vlana Death quotes by Jessica Sorensen
She banged her knuckles until they ached to get the attention of the living flesh behind the glass, and would have smashed her fist through the window just to touch him, feel his heat, the only thing that could protect her from a smothering death of dry roses. ~ Toni Morrison
Vlana Death quotes by Toni Morrison
The Buddhists are right. Guilty men are not sentenced to death, they are sentenced to life. ~ Steve Toltz
Vlana Death quotes by Steve Toltz
The grey of a bitter, starved-looking morning. The town like a mortally wounded creature, torn by shells, gashed open by bombs. Dead streets - streets of death - death in streets and their houses; yet people still able to sleep and still sleeping. ~ Radclyffe Hall
Vlana Death quotes by Radclyffe Hall
I WANT her though, to take the same from me.
She touches me as if I were herself, her own.
She has not realized yet, that fearful thing, that
I am the other,
she thinks we are all of one piece.
It is painfully untrue.

I want her to touch me at last, ah, on the root and
quick of my darkness
and perish on me, as I have perished on her.

Then, we shall be two and distinct, we shall have
each our separate being.
And that will be pure existence, real liberty.
Till then, we are confused, a mixture, unresolved,
unextricated one from the other.
It is in pure, unutterable resolvedness, distinction
of being, that one is free,
not in mixing, merging, not in similarity.
When she has put her hand on my secret, darkest
sources, the darkest outgoings,
when it has struck home to her, like a death, "this is _him!_"
she has no part in it, no part whatever,
it is the terrible _other_,
when she knows the fearful _other flesh_, ah, dark-
ness unfathomable and fearful, contiguous and concrete,
when she is slain against me, and lies in a heap
like one outside the house,
when she passes away as I have passed away
being pressed up against the _other_,
then I shall be glad, I shall not be confused with her,
I shall be cleared, distinct, single as if burnished in silver,
having no adherence, no adhesion anywhere,
one clear, burnished, isol ~ D.H. Lawrence
Vlana Death quotes by D.H. Lawrence
Much of what is written on the craft is biased in one way or another, so weed out what is useful to you and ignore the rest. I see the next few years as being crucial in the transformation of our culture away from the patriarchal death cults and toward the love of life, of nature, of the female principle. The craft is only one path among the many opening up for women, and many of us will blaze new trails as we explore the uncharted country of our own interiors. The heritage, the culture, the knowledge of the ancient priestesses, healers, poets, singers, and seers were nearly lost, but a seed survived the flames that will blossom in a new age into thousands of flowers. The long sleep of Mother Goddess is ended. May She awaken in each of our hearts ~~ Merry meet, merry part, and blessed be. ~ Starhawk
Vlana Death quotes by Starhawk
Death is the architect of life"- by Lucinda Davis (this quote was given to me in a dream by my deceased Mother in 2005) ~ Lucinda Davis
Vlana Death quotes by Lucinda Davis
In a last violent protest against the hopelessness of imminent death, I sensed my spirit piercing through the enveloping gloom. I felt it transcend that hopeless, meaningless world, and from somewhere I heard a victorious "Yes" in answer to my question of the existence of an ultimate purpose. At that moment a light was lit in a distant farmhouse, which stood on the horizon as if painted there, in the midst of the miserable gray of a dawning morning in Bavaria. "Et lux in tenebris lucet"-and the light shineth in the darkness. ~ Viktor E. Frankl
Vlana Death quotes by Viktor E. Frankl
The worlds in which man is evolving as he treads the circle of births and deaths are three: the physical world, the astral or intermediate world, the mental or heavenly world. ~ Annie Besant
Vlana Death quotes by Annie Besant
The really good thing about 'Sleepy Hollow' is you have no idea who's going to die when ... But then equally, we showed in the pilot several people can come back to life, so you have no idea who's going to come back. Death means very little in our Sleepy Hollow, so expect more surprise deaths and more surprise resurrections. ~ Tom Mison
Vlana Death quotes by Tom Mison
The conversion of Paul was no conversion at all; it was Paul who converted the religion that has raised one man above sin and death. ~ George Bernard Shaw
Vlana Death quotes by George Bernard Shaw
At the inception of this writing project, I considered the wisdom of executing a purposeful slaughtering of my egotistical self. If I do screw up the temerity to commence with an autopsy of a soulful self, I might lack the fortitude to stay the course to dissect the nature of my being. Without deep-seated faith, I risk faltering at the operating table and never rising again. Will I suffer from a desertion of boldness? Alternatively, will a stunning lack of talent and criminal absence of cognitive insight, perception, and discernment along with a paucity of intellectual and practical acumen betray me when I attempt to whisk up incomplete mental fragments previously abandoned to simmer in the deepest recesses of my animalistic being? Overwrought by a hovering sense of terror concerning what filthy rubbish I might discover lurking within the hallways of my afflicted soul, I am hesitant to descend into the labyrinth of the unknown. I might not endure to write about what fate awaits me when I attempt to harpoon protean personal thoughts steeped in fear and disgust. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Vlana Death quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
My grandfather had died, and my mother was trying to explain it to me ... Grandpa isn't coming back? No, she said. Not ever again ... And I remember saying, hold everything right fucking there. You went to all the trouble of conceiving me, and giving birth to me, and raising me and clothing me and all ... and you make me cry and things hurt so much and disappointments crush my heart every day and I can't do half the things I want to and sometimes I just want to scream
and what I've got to look forward to is my body breaking and something flipping off the switch in my head
I go through all this, and then there's death? What is the motherfucking deal here? I wasn't having this. This was not fair. ~ Warren Ellis
Vlana Death quotes by Warren Ellis
I try to write lyrics so that they won't age, which sort of leaves you with the big subjects like death and love and sex and violence. ~ Florence Welch
Vlana Death quotes by Florence Welch
Whatever happens, they say afterwards, it must have been fate. People are always a little confused about this, as they are in the case of miracles. When someone is saved from certain death by a strange concatenation of circumstances, they say that's a miracle. But of course if someone is killed by a freak chain of events
the oil spilled just there, the safety fence broken just there
that must also be a miracle. Just because it's not nice doesn't mean it's not miraculous. ~ Terry Pratchett
Vlana Death quotes by Terry Pratchett
Clay took a breath, reached out, and -
CLAP!
- smashed the fly between his palms.
Right in front of the dragon's eye.
Brett stared at him in shock. "Do you have a death wish? ~ Pseudonymous Bosch
Vlana Death quotes by Pseudonymous Bosch
Death is very close, he thought. When you think in this manner. I can feel it, he decided. How near I am. Nothing is killing me; I have no enemy, no antagonist; I am merely expiring, like a magazine subscription: month by month. ~ Philip K. Dick
Vlana Death quotes by Philip K. Dick
Usually the things that kill us are the things we do every single day. ~ J.M. McDermott
Vlana Death quotes by J.M. McDermott
Between the dark, heavily laden treetops of the spreading chestnut trees could be seen the dark blue of the sky, full of stars, all solemn and golden, which extended their radiance unconcernedly into the distance. That was the nature of the stars. and the trees bore their buds and blossoms and scars for everyone to see, and whether it signified pleasure or pain, they accepted the strong will to live. flies that lived only for a day swarmed toward their death. every life had its radiance and beauty. i had insight into it all for a moment, understood it and found it good, and also found my life and sorrows good. ~ Hermann Hesse
Vlana Death quotes by Hermann Hesse
John F. Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" has maligned into "What can my country do for me?" While I can't comment on the societal deterioration outside of the United States, within the last 20 years Sidewalking has become a way of life in America. Americans once loyally proclaimed, "Give me liberty or give me death." Now we just say, "Give me. ~ M.J. DeMarco
Vlana Death quotes by M.J. DeMarco
they told her, "fear the reaper."
she laughed to herself and muttered, 'baby, death ain't nothing' more than a quick fuck.
a little bit of silence after he comes. ~ Taylor Rhodes
Vlana Death quotes by Taylor Rhodes
The passion of Jesus is lonely only as all our deaths are lonely. He is with us in the loneliness of death, too. And so, he and we are not alone even there. The same blow that strikes him dead, strikes us all dead, and it strikes us in the same way. ~ Craig Keen
Vlana Death quotes by Craig Keen
I think a lot about death more than life, because we're going towards death. ~ Ritchie Blackmore
Vlana Death quotes by Ritchie Blackmore
Any real belief in death is just wishful thinking. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
