Several themes describe misconceptions about mental illness and corresponding stigmatizing attitudes. Media analyses of film and print have identified three: people with mental illness are homicidal maniacs who need to be feared; they have childlike perceptions of the world that should be marveled; or they are responsible for their illness because they have weak character (29-32). Results of two independent factor analyses of the survey responses of more than 2000 English and American citizens parallel these findings (19,33):

- fear and exclusion: persons with severe mental illness should be feared and, therefore, be kept out of most communities;
- authoritarianism: persons with severe mental illness are irresponsible, so life decisions should be made by others;
- benevolence: persons with severe mental illness are childlike and need to be cared for.
- Although stigmatizing attitudes are not limited to mental illness, the public seems to disapprove persons with psychiatric disabilities significantly more than persons with related conditions such as physical illness (34-36). ~ Matthew W. Corrigan
Verfallen English quotes by Matthew W. Corrigan
There may be no English word as bent and broken by casual misuse, or drained of blood by idealizing admirers and apologists, or grossly caricatured by huckstering detractors, as church. ~ Craig Keen
Verfallen English quotes by Craig Keen
I would make them all learn English: and then I would let the clever ones learn Latin as an honour, and Greek as a treat. ~ Winston S. Churchill
Verfallen English quotes by Winston S. Churchill
Her (India's) great curse is caste; but English education has already proved a tremendous power in levelling the injurious distinctions of caste. ~ Keshub Chandra Sen
Verfallen English quotes by Keshub Chandra Sen
Sex is really only touch, the closest of all touch. And it's touch we're afraid of. We're only half-conscious, and half-alive. We've for to come alive and aware. Especially the English have got to get into touch with one another, a bit delicate and a bit tender. It's our crying need. ~ D.H. Lawrence
Verfallen English quotes by D.H. Lawrence
I resist the urge to raise my hand and utter the four most reassuring words in the English language: I know a guy. ~ Sarah Vowell
Verfallen English quotes by Sarah Vowell
The English say, Yours Truly, and mean it. The Italians say, I kiss your feet, and mean, I kick your head. ~ Wilfred Owen
Verfallen English quotes by Wilfred Owen
In the English character, the "give and take" policy, the business principle of the trader, is principally inherent. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Verfallen English quotes by Swami Vivekananda
I was too far away to hear what was said but I saw in Val's eyes the same fear that I had once known and could well guess at Lucas' unthinking remark. ~ Julia Lee Dean
Verfallen English quotes by Julia Lee Dean
A woman who is praying and a woman who is having fun, they both say " Oh My God", the only difference is how they pronounce it. ~ M.F. Moonzajer
Verfallen English quotes by M.F. Moonzajer
The importance of English word order is also the reason that the idea that you can't end a sentence with a preposition is utter hogwash. In fact, it would be utter hogwash anyway, and anyone who claims that you can't end a sentence with up, should be told to shut. It is, as Shakespeare put it, such stuff as dreams are made on, but it's one of those silly English beliefs that flesh is heir to. ~ Mark Forsyth
Verfallen English quotes by Mark Forsyth
Country' and 'city' are very powerful words, and this is not surprising when we remember how much they seem to stand for in the experience of human communities. In English, 'country' is both a nation and a part of a 'land'; 'the country' can be the whole society or its rural area. In the long history of human settlements, this connection between the land from which directly or indirectly we all get our living and the achievements of human society has been deeply known. ~ Raymond Williams
Verfallen English quotes by Raymond Williams
Sometimes you can do things with Spanish - like verbs and genders - easier than you can in English. ~ Juan Felipe Herrera
Verfallen English quotes by Juan Felipe Herrera
English vampires may not be as well behaved around witches as the American ones are. ~ Deborah Harkness
Verfallen English quotes by Deborah Harkness
What captivated me about you was that you opened the door to another world for me. The values that dominated my childhood had no place there. That world enchanted me. I could leave the real world behind and be someone else, without any ties or obligations. With you, I was elsewhere, in a foreign place, foreign to myself. You gave me access to another dimension when I'd always rejected any fixed identity and just worn different identities on top of each other, though none of them were mine.
By speaking to you in English, I made your language mine. I've continued to talk to you in English right up to this day, even when you answered me in French. For me, English, which I knew mainly through you and through books, was from the start like a private language that preserved our intimacy against the intrusion of the real world, and its prevailing social normals. I felt like I was building a protected and protective world with you. ~ Andre Gorz
Verfallen English quotes by Andre Gorz
English civilization rests largely upon tea and cricket, with mighty spurts of enjoyment on Derby Day, and at Newmarket. ~ Agnes Repplier
Verfallen English quotes by Agnes Repplier
No hot guy should be allowed to have an English accent and drive a motorcycle.
Not to mention wear the leather jacket or sport the cool shades. Hot guys should be forced into footie pajamas. ~ Jandy Nelson
Verfallen English quotes by Jandy Nelson
English doctors have killed 3/4 of my friends & the joke is the remaining 1/4 go on recommending them, so odd is human nature. ~ Nancy Mitford
Verfallen English quotes by Nancy Mitford
I hate editors, for they make me abandon a lot of perfectly good English words. ~ Mark Twain
Verfallen English quotes by Mark Twain
I love the English way, which is not as capitalistic as it is in America. People don't talk about work and money. They talk about interesting things at dinner parties. ~ Gwyneth Paltrow
Verfallen English quotes by Gwyneth Paltrow
I had really good English teachers in elementary through high school. Not only were we required to read a lot - which is the best training for writing - we were drilled on grammar every day, every night. I hated the drill part, but I don't dangle my participles too often. ~ Carol Berg
Verfallen English quotes by Carol Berg
Jews ate the English nation to its bones. ~ John Speed
Verfallen English quotes by John Speed
I don't know what the hell that freak just said, but we're not as backward as you cyborgs think! We know how to speak English!" The tableau continued a moment longer before Old-timer finally managed to utter, "You do?" "No! I'm lying to you! I don't speak a damn word of English! I memorized this phonetically just to piss you off at the right moment!" the Purist shouted back at him. ~ David Simpson
Verfallen English quotes by David Simpson
You can achieve the highest level of academic, financial, physical, emotional and spiritual success but you won't achieve true harmony until you cook your own meal. ~ Tim J. Brooks
Verfallen English quotes by Tim J. Brooks
Wikipedia took the idea of peer review and applied it to volunteers on a global scale, becoming the most important English reference work in less than 10 years. Yet the cumulative time devoted to creating Wikipedia, something like 100 million hours of human thought, is expended by Americans every weekend, just watching ads. ~ Clay Shirky
Verfallen English quotes by Clay Shirky
The concept of modernity in literary history was also related to the relation each Indian language and literature developed with English. Sanskrit and Persian literary models were labelled as traditional and medieval, and those found in English, irrespective of any period, as modern (page 22) ~ Francesca Orsini
Verfallen English quotes by Francesca Orsini
The rock 'n roll music gets louder, the dancers get more frantic, and the lights start going on and off like crazy. And there are spotlights blinking in our eyes, and car horns beeping, and Gerard Malanga and the dancers are shaking like mad, and you don't think the noise can get any louder, and then it does, until there is one rhythmic tidal wave of sound, pressing down around you, just impure enough so you can still get the beat; the audience, all of it fused together into one magnificent moment of hysteria. ~ George English
Verfallen English quotes by George English
When I'm on television, I'm talking to millions of people, so the conversation is totally different. My words are different. My diction is different because now I'm really talking American English and not homeboy English. ~ Keyshawn Johnson
Verfallen English quotes by Keyshawn Johnson
After the Soviet collapse, Marxism is a relic, a pathetic anachronism reduced to its last redoubts: North Korea, Cuba, and the English departments of the more expensive American universities. ~ Charles Krauthammer
Verfallen English quotes by Charles Krauthammer
His mama named him Head?" Talon snorted derisively. "Damn, that's cold. And here I thought this Cabeza had it bad."
"It was a nickname. His real name was Kukulcan Verastegui."
The Cabeza in front of her broke off into a fierce round of what sounded like Mayan cursing. She had no idea what he was saying, but it was raw and explosive as he gestured furiously to punctuate his tirade.
She turned her frown to Talon. "What's he saying?"
Talon shrugged. "I'm from Britain, not Mexico. No idea."
"That pendejo is not me." Cabeza broke off into a mixture of Mayan and Spanish and then returned to English, but this time his accent was much thicker and he rolled his Rs viciously. "His name, for the record, is Chacu. Ese cabrón hijo de la gran puta, pretending to be me. I should have cut his throat for my Act of Vengeance!"
"The real question is, did you cut his throat today?"
Hands on hips, Cabeza glared at Talon for asking such a thing. "No. He got away, along with the … what's the word? Uh … Pigeon crap?"
"Chicken shit?" Talon offered.
"Si!… that was with him. They vanished before I could kill them. ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Verfallen English quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
A young English couple was visiting with me one summer after I had been composting humanure for about six years. One evening, as dinner was being prepared, the couple suddenly understood the horrible reality of their situation: the food they were about to eat was recycled human shit. When this fact abruptly dawned upon them, it seemed to set off an instinctive alarm, possibly inherited directly from Queen Victoria. "We don't want to eat shit!" they informed me, rather distressed (that's an exact quote), as if in preparing dinner I had simply set a steaming turd on a plate in front of them with a knife, fork and napkin. ~ Joseph Jenkins
Verfallen English quotes by Joseph Jenkins
When a new writer defends his "style," the teacher smiles (or cringes) because real style isn't an artifice. Real style - voice - arrives on its own, as an extension of a writer's character. When style is done self-consciously and purposefully it becomes affectation, and as transparent as any affectation - an English accent on an old college chum from New Jersey, for example. ~ Bill Roorbach
Verfallen English quotes by Bill Roorbach
There's a thing in the U.K., particularly in London, where it's kind of the idea of subculture and counterculture and the outside and the idea that it's great to be a freak, and the freak always wins. So I think English girls are a lot less scared of being the freak or looking like an idiot. ~ Edie Campbell
Verfallen English quotes by Edie Campbell
You're too loud, police girl. I don't care if you are a vampire. You're still English; have some manners. ~ Hellsing
Verfallen English quotes by Hellsing
Even though many Indians can read or speak English, for most, it is not their first language. At the office, we speak in English, but we consume our culture in our own language. ~ Amish Tripathi
Verfallen English quotes by Amish Tripathi
In a small village near Calcutta, in 1998, a villager who could not speak English sang me What Did You Learn In School Today? in Bengali! Tom Paxton's songs are reaching around the world more than he is, or any of us could have realized. Keep on, Tom! ~ Tom Paxton
Verfallen English quotes by Tom Paxton
The sea has formed the English character and the essential England is to be found in those who follow it. From blue waters they have learned mercifulness, and they have also learned - in the grimmest of schools - precision and resolution. The sea endures no makeshifts. If a thing is not exactly right it will be vastly wrong. ~ John Buchan
Verfallen English quotes by John Buchan
Teaching English is an intrinsically radical act. Is it possible to teach English so that people stop killing each other? ~ Mary Rose O'Reilley
Verfallen English quotes by Mary Rose O'Reilley
I graduated in 2004 with an English degree and a case of imposter syndrome so intense that I convinced myself I "didn't have enough ideas" to become a writer of any kind. ~ Lindy West
Verfallen English quotes by Lindy West
My favorite English teacher in high school showed me 'Brazil' when I was 15, and it blew my mind. It's one of those movies that's revealed itself in different ways as I've gone back to it over the years. ~ Win Butler
Verfallen English quotes by Win Butler
How could the colonists starve in the midst of plenty? One reason was that the English feared leaving Jamestown to fish, because Powhatan's fighters were waiting outside the colony walls. A second reason was that a startlingly large proportion of the colonists were gentlemen, a status defined by not having to perform manual labor. ~ Charles C. Mann
Verfallen English quotes by Charles C. Mann
Being blonde means people decide on sight that you are much prettier and nicer than you really are, just as Americans automatically add 10 points to someone's IQ when they hear an English accent. Fact. ~ Rachel Johnson
Verfallen English quotes by Rachel Johnson
The English winter - ending in July to recommence in August ~ George Gordon Byron
Verfallen English quotes by George Gordon Byron
Personally I crave not for 'independence', which I do not understand, but I long for freedom from the English yoke. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Verfallen English quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
I didn't understand how funny this play Much Ado About Nothing truly was until I became an English teacher and had to teach it. There is no wittier dialogue anywhere. ~ Dan Brown
